Server bandwidth-monitoring

so..right now, I'm using ntop (http://twilightlair.net:5000) as my bandwidth-monitor for my server. The two problems I have are that:
1. When looking at traffic summaries, it lists specific hosts with how much traffic they've sent/recv'd. instead of the destinations they're going to (i.e. which subdomains and whatnot.) It does say what subdomains they've gone to when you look at detailed info but that doesn't help much if there all a million hosts to sift through.
2. Almost half my traffic is just listed as "Other TCP/UDP Ports." The only way I see to get port-info is the "last minute distribution" on the bottom of the main page, not a monthly summary or something of the like.
any ideas?

I'm not a big fan of ntop for the same reason.  I'm currently evaluating bandwidth monitoring tools to see which best fits my needs.  There's a great listing of bandwidth monitoring tools for linux, along with a short description on this page: http://www.ubuntugeek.com/bandwidth-mon … linux.html  I've learned of a handful of tools I didn't know about that I'll be experimenting with.
My needs are slightly different than yours, however.  I need to take bandwidth measurements throughout the day at sample intervals and record the results into a log file or csv.  I'll combine this with a script I wrote to upload a large file during the bandwidth test.  I need to know the maximum upload rate in order to dynamically adjust my traffic shaping parameters.
Let me know which tools you end up using.

  • VM Server Performance Monitoring

    Hi all:
We've made the foray into the Virtualization world using Oracle VM Server. We are using the VM Manager to control guests but do have Grid Control for monitoring our servers for performances, etc. For Dom0, what should be used Grid Control? I attempted to install the 10.2.0.5 Grid Agent, but, came up with an installer error and may be due to a missing file. Which means to me that the Grid Agent was not meant to monitor OVS.
    TIA,

It is a licensed option for Grid Control, so you should speak to your Oracle Tech Sales representative about licensing it for your needs. You cannot monitor or manage Oracle VM Servers without VM Management Pack, as the agent does not work. Oracle VM Server is monitored by a remote agent.
Keep in mind that you can install the EM agent into the guests that are running on Oracle VM.

Mavricks, MacbookPro, typical config of everything and standard business user, no heavy graphics, animation or media editing. MS Office, web apps, etc.
I have the same issue with Logmein, which I installed a trial, uninstalled with appzapper, which I thought does a good job of untangling the components of apps but for these 2 it doesn't.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thx,

Usually applications like these have their own uninstallers, either build into the installer ( ! ) itself or as a separate uninstaller app. Check the site of the software provider for instructions.

  • Inserting a Flash video and the Bandwidth Monitor

I am new to Captivate, and I want to be sure I'm following
some practical guidelines for inserting Flash video in my Captivate
    slides.
I know there are quite a few variables relating to practical
bandwidth usage--basically, we are creating elearning presenations
that will have "talking head" videos embedded within. These
presentations will be available for download via our LMS site, both
    within the US and overseas.
I have utilized Captivate's Bandwidth Monitor to gauge the
bandwidth hit each video slide is responsible for. However, I don't
believe the numbers I'm getting back: because I've set each
embedded video to "Pause slide till end of video", all the slides
are reporting the same length in seconds, KB per sec and Video KB
    numbers.
Can someone suggest a practical method for setting up the
videos such that the Bandwidth Monitor can interpret them
correctly? Can you also suggest a rule of thumb for maximum length
for each slide with an embedded video (320 X 240) in it?
    Thanks in advance,
    Carl

  • Is Bandwidth monitoring possible?

    Hi,
I wanted to monitor my internet usage. Is it possible to build a bandwidth monitoring application using ActionScript 3.0 (with AIR + Flex).
    Aim:
Get total downloads and uploads going via ethernet.
(If possible display the list of ethernet cards and wifi cards and the user can select the one needed to be monitored).
Also get the time of connection.
    +(optional)
Automatically monitor if any transfers goes any ethernet or the ethernet after selecting the specific one thereafter.Any resources or any ideas regarding the above.
    Thanks.

    Dear Siva,
we did nearly the same in LV 4.0 times where the G Webserver was not integrated into LV. The only difference is that we used a java applet instead of javascript. It was running fine with Netscape 3 and Internet Explorer 4 on Win NT 4 machines.

  • Exchange Server 2013 Monitoring Software

    Greetings,
Any suggestion for Exchange Server 2013 monitoring software that is capable of :
1- Monitoring Server Status / Health / Resource Utilization / etc..
2- Incoming / Outgoing email messages to / from  the organization
3- monitoring specific mailbox for incoming/outgoing messages
    4- spam detection
5- message content when monitoring mailboxes
    Thanking you

    Hi Jamil,
If you are using hardware appliance then you can check with the hardware appliance vendor for the functionality or you can enable anti spam agent on mailbox server role as well. Mailbox server role will provide you following anti x facilities once enabled.
Sender Filter agent: compares the sender on the MAIL FROM:
    SMTP command to an administrator-defined list of senders or sender domains who are prohibited from sending messages to the organization to determine what action, if any, to take on an inbound message;
Recipient Filter agent: compares the message recipients on the
RCPT TO: SMTP command to an administrator-defined Recipient Block list. If a match is found, the message is not permitted to enter the organization. The recipient filter also compares recipients on inbound messages to the local recipient directory
    to determine whether the message is addressed to valid recipients. When a message is not addressed to valid recipients, it is rejected;
    Sender ID agent: relies on the IP address of the sending server and the Purported Responsible Address (PRA) of the sender to determine whether the sender is spoofed or not;
Content Filter agent: assesses the contents of a message and also acts on the safelist aggregation feature, which collects data from the anti-spam safe lists that Outlook and Outlook Web App users configure and makes this data available
    to the Content Filter agent;
Protocol Analysis agent: is the underlying agent that implements the sender reputation functionality. Sender reputation relies on persisted data about the IP address of the sending server to determine what action, if any, to take on an
inbound message. A Sender Reputation Level (SRL) is calculated from several sender characteristics that are derived from message analysis and external tests.
If you are not interested to use EOP then you have the option to use GFI or any third party tool. I would suggest if you are using hardware appliance then this would be done by the hardware appliance if capable of doing this. Thanks.

  • Adding JBoss Application Server for Monitoring

How do you add a JBoss Application Server for monitoring? Is there a way to add it silently like silent install of the host target?

It is a manual process, you need to launch Jboss discover UI using Targets > Middlware page.
Also, please use JVMD for more detailed analysis.
You need to specify JARs based on the version of the JBoss -
Note - Please check the support site for exact certified versions of JBoss.
    JBoss 4:
    dom4j.jar jboss-management.jar jnp-client.jar
    jbossall-client.jar jboss-client.jar
    JBoss 5:
    concurrent.jar jboss-javaee.jar jboss-serialization.jar
    dom4j.jar jboss-jsr77-client.jar jbosssx-as-client.jar
    jbossall-client.jar jboss-logging-spi.jar jbosssx-client.jar
    jboss-client.jar jboss-management.jar jnp-client.jar
    jboss-common-core.jar jboss-remoting.jar jboss-integration.jar jboss-security-spi.jar
    JBoss 6:
    concurrent.jar jboss-management.jar
    dom4j.jar jboss-remoting.jar
    jbossall-client.jar jboss-security-spi.jar
    jboss-client.jar jboss-serialization.jar
    jboss-common-core.jar jbosssx-as-client.jar
    jboss-ejb-api_3.1_spec.jar jbosssx-client.jar
    jboss-integration.jar jboss-transaction-api_1.1_spec.jar
    jboss-jsr77-client.jar jnp-client.jar
    jboss-logging.jar
If you plan to use JVMD then you should select Remote Agent for discovery/monitoring.
JNDI service should be configured and Naming Service port should be open.
Agent should be able to communicate with the host and JNDI port.
Above list of JARs to be copied on the agent machine (location provided as library path during discovery)
Could you please share customer details and usecases.

I wanted to enable SQL server Replication monitoring
    I checked online and found
    http://blogs.catapultsystems.com/cfuller/archive/2010/11/10/enabling-sql-replication-monitoring-%E2%80%93-what-to-expect-in-the-replication-views-in-opsmgr.aspx
After i setup monitoring by enabling the discover by overrides the Distributor state became healthy and being monitored. However  it shows Not Monitored state for Publication, Publisher and subscriber state
do i have to configure something else as well

If the discovery jobs are enabled they should appear as monitored.
Could be that the discovery did not yet fully run.
    I would:
Review the health explorer for the systems
    Review the discovery status

After reviewing the management pack guide here:
    http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=10631
It is stating on page 51 you need to enable the discovery for the different objects seperately. So maybe check into that as well...
It's doing common things uncommonly well that brings succes.

  • UCCX 7 server based monitoring doc

    Hi there,
I am looking to setup server base recoding with RSPAN. The only documentation that i could find relating to this is:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/voicesw/ps556/products_tech_note09186a00801a62a8.shtml
This is for CRS and CM verstion 3.
Is there any more up to date documenation? or is this still valid?
Is there any other documentations relating to server base recoding with RSPAN?
    Thanks for any help?
    alexis

    Hi Alexis,
The design of server-based monitoring in UCCX 7.0 hasn't changed much since 3.x.  The configuration on UCCX is fairly straightforward.  You'll want to make sure that desktop monitoring is unchecked for the agent phones in Cisco Desktop Administrator, and you'll want to make sure that the Post-Install tool (C:\Program Files\cisco\desktop\bin\PostInstall.exe) has the 2nd NIC of the server selected for Monitoring/Recording.
What is important for the SPAN setup is that when the RTP packets reach the second NIC of the server (Connected to SPAN destination port) that the MAC address of the phone remains intact).  The monitoring/recording service in 7.0 filters the packets by MAC address to determine which RTP packets are part of the conversation.  Layer 3 devices can change this MAC address as the packet is routed, so it's important the SPAN configuration picks up the traffic directly from the phone and relays it to the server's second NIC intact.
    Thanks,
    Brendan

  • Ea4500 and bandwidth monitoring

    Hi.
I have a ea4500 router with 3 pc's, 4 iphones, 2 playstations, ipad, ps vita, house cat, and a printer all wired into the internet.  There are four of us in the family all using the internet but I suspect one of us is using considerably more than the other.  I live in the country and my current isp has us on the max available account - 50 gigs / month.  Lately we have been hitting 45 in less than 3 weeks into the month.  I would like to know which of the things connected or which person is using the most of the bandwidth up.  Is there a program that doesn't require a phd in quantum physics and networking that can monitor this for me and spit out a report on who or what is the hog here?

Bandwidth monitor does not come handy with this device. However, you can dig a little deeper through Google to find third party software that could monitor bandwidth consumption for every device inside the network. I found one that monitors the bandwidth consumption of each application installed on my computer. This one only monitors one computer not the network. You might be able to find a network monitor if you dig a little dipper through the net.

  • Network and Bandwidth Monitor Suggestion?

I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a network monitor application that runs well on Leopard Server. I would hope it could provide statistics on different ethernet interfaces as well as filter down to ip addresses. I've used Network Monitor (but it doesn't seem to filter down to monitoring ip addresses) and ntop but I don't know if runs on Leopard. It would be used to check for bottlenecks as well as monitor bandwidth usage for individual ip's. Thanks for any suggestions.

Solarwinds is one of the best tools our clients purchased for pinpointing issues on their LAN. All too often a tech points to the network as a problem, only to find through Solarwinds that the problem is related to CPU or memory or disk space, etc. Solarwinds is easy to use and the amount of time and trouble it saved payed for itself many times over in a very short amount of time.
