Service.cshttpd.maxthreads tuning

Are there any guidelines on how to set the service.cshttpd.maxthreads parameter in ics.conf?
The default value is 20, but presumably this would need to increase with the number of users.
I couldn't find anything in the documentation/wikis/forums about this, but any tips or advice are most welcome.
Cheers.

Hypothetically, if there were 50 simultaneous requests to cshttpd (perhaps during peak times), would the first 20 requests be serviced by threads from the pool, while requests 21-50 would have to wait for threads to complete their tasks and become free again?Given that a single CPU thread can only perform one task at a time then this would be an accurate description. However you only have a single CPU so each thread is going to be time-sliced anyhow. Also having jobs queue is only an issue if the end-user notices the queuing delay.
If so, might performance be improved by increasing service.http.maxthreads to 60?Is your cshttpd process running at 100% CPU?
If you run prstat, how many CPU threads is the cshttpd process running during peak periods e.g. ?
PID USERNAME SIZE RSS STATE PRI NICE TIME CPU PROCESS/NLWP
908 icsuser 206M 86M sleep 59 0 0:02:04 0.0% cshttpd/3
(in the above there are only 3 threads in use by the process).
Are you hitting a limit/problems with the existing default setting?It's hard to tell, as we have only subjective measurements to go by. Is there any way to monitor the cshttpd threadpool (perhaps by turning on detailed logging of some sort)? That might tell us whether requests are having to wait for free threads or not.If you are hitting a large number of threads based on the output above, adding additional threads can make matters worse as it can increase contention for resources (CPU/Disk/Database etc.).
So if you are having performance problems then you need to address the underlying bottleneck whatever that happens to be.

Shane.

  • Tempo service hangs every time I start laptop

    Hi I have a Satellite L350 - 17P and every day it starts up it locks up. It works for about a minute then freezes. On starting it up the 2nd time it works perfectly. Any one have any ideas how to stop this pc doing this? It's a few years old now and I was not told it did this by my son until I used it one day!
    Tempo service hangs every time I start the computer.
    I have done a search for Version.txt and minidump.mdmp but can't find them.
    Can anybody help?

    Well it hung again even after uninstalling and installing tempro.
    I decided to unistall it completely as hoped this would stop it freezing up but it didn't.
    Today it froze as per usual but when I checked the problem reporting there was not a report nor did it give me any information as to why it froze again today.
    Totally at a loss as to why this is happening, and how can it be fixed if there is no reason given for it freezing???

    Have disabled in _MSCONFIG_ and it does not start, so it seems to that I will have to uninstall and wait untill the problem is resolved or untill other people have the same problem.

    We're experiencing imap problems that appear to be load related, and have had to restart mail services several times to restore service. The imap logs show a large number of socket errors. The server load average is in the 1-2 range; there's no apparent memory resource problem. We're seeing 600-1000 simultaneous imap sessions, which is a higher number than in the past. We run JMS & Communications Express on dedicated V490 SPARC server with 8GB of memory. We're planning to add an additional 8GB this Friday.
    Our imap configuration settings are as follows:
    -bash-3.00$ configutil | grep service.imap

    service.imap.enablesslport = yes
    service.imap.idletimeout = 30

    2. Is there a virtual memory limit on the 32-bit version of JMS 6.2? Is the limit greater for JMS 6.3?The Solaris OS imposes the virtual memory size limit of ~3.75GB for all 32bit processes on SPARC. 64-bit processes have a much much larger limit.

  • Mshttpd runs but doesn't listen

    The version info:

    Some other config related info:
    running Sun Cluster 3.1 and HAstoragePlus, ie no globally mounted filesystems. Also, I wanted the ability to bounce the ldap server independant of iMS, so the ldap resource is NOT listed as a dependancy of the ha-ims resource. (yeah, I know it's not what the "book" says. :-))
    I'm running IMAPS and HTTPS using a cert signed by our own CA. This CA has signed certs for quite a few other products, including DS5p2 and they all work fine.
    Now here's the problem. The mshttpd and imap daemons don't maintain the SSL listener. I have HTTPS running on port 444 (because its one more and a web server runs on the other half of the cluster). The imaps runs on the default, 993. The imap and http logs show no indication of it failing to start nor any other problem. I should add that it appears the SSL listener doesn't start, but the non-ssl listener works fine.
    The odd part is that sometimes the SSL enabled daemons will start-up and run properly. We only have about 600 users. They currently use imap and I want to get them on imaps and/or https. Any ideas?
    One more question. Is it possible to truss these processes? Currently, I can't because the HA agent effectively puts a trace on the process and truss comes back with an error. Any workaround to this?

    I am finding a solution how to build a simple jax rpc web service using weblogic 9.2 ant tasks. I cant find a task which generate war out of my implementation.
    It have to be JAX-RPC ws (not JAX-WS).

    Hi Carmen,
    WLS 8.1 provides a spec compliant, full featured JAX-RPC
    implementation. Mixing the impl can cause unpredictable and unexpected
    results because they share many of the same upper layers, but under the
    covers things can be quite different.
    If you are looking for J2EE 1.4 web service features, stay tuned...we
    are working at flank speed.

    as far as I know , weblogic 8.1 is a J2EE 1.3-compliant application server ..so
    does this mean that I can't deploy Sun's jax-rpc webservice (which is a standard
    way to develop webservices in j2EE 1.4 ) on weblogic 8.1..?
    and If I can't , is there a way to configure weblogic in order to deploy Sun's
    jax-rpc webservice..?
    would you please help me to find the answers..??

  • Getting my T420s to boot faster: Your collective wisdom

    I have a brand spanking new 1 week old T420s and I’m very happy with it so far.
    I have been reading about Lenovo’s 7 second  rapidboot extreme, and I get that it will only work on preloaded machines with the special BIOS etc. Mine is a work machine, so it’s has our standard company Win 7 image as well as other software. I am interested to make mine boot as fast as possible though, within the limitations I have. So far it boots in around 40s - 44s, which seems far slower than other T420s. We use disk encryption, so I measure it from when I’ve entered the encryption software password (and Win starts booting from that point), to the desktop when the cursor stops spinning. To the actual desktop itself is around 35s - 40s.
    My machine is: T420s, i5-2540M, 8Gb RAM, Intel 160Gb SSD, Win7 64 bit. Some of the software that I need to have: Sophos disk encryption, Cisco AnyConnect VPN client, Iron Mountain Connected Backup, Office 2010 and Symantec anti virus.
    According to this article, this is what it takes for a 7s boot:
    http://www.lenovoblogs.com/lenovofiles/2011/01/26/lenovo-enhanced-experience-2-10-second-pc-boot/
    1. Custom UEFI firmware from Phoenix (even if I could get it, UEFI doesn’t currently work with my disk encryption software)
    2. Native UEFI mode 64-bit install of Windows 7 (GPT format) (again, not an option)
    3. Intel 160GB SSD (M-class) (not sure if I have M-class, but I have an Intel 160Gb SSD)
    4. Driver and service optimizations and tuning (Something I can do!)
    5. One part secret sauce (??!?!)
    So clearly all I can do is play with the loading of startup and services. Please note I’m not an IT person, but I’m comfortable tinkering with settings, within reason as I can’t have the machine crash. I have downloaded all the latest drivers, and installed the RapidBoot software.
    Below is a snapshot from services.msc showing what services that are still automatically starting up. Honestly I don't know what some of the services are so haven't been willing to play with them in case it goes pear shaped. I would like to delay the VPN, iron mountain backup, WWAN and antivirus, but not sure where to do that, as i couldn't do it here.
    So do any of you guys have suggestions on what I can do to make it boot faster?

    Thanks Ideasmiths. I did try Soluto, but then i uninstalled in. I noticed the software sends back through to themselves all the startup info and stats of your machine. I didn't have time to read through and understand the implications of it all, so i wasn't comfortable with it.
    I did notice Soluto could delay loading stuff like the VPN etc, which made a difference to the boot up time. But I also figured if the SW could do it, there must be a way i can configure it myself to do the same thing?
    And I guess in a way thats what i'm asking - how can i delay the startup of the non essential SW that can't be set to Automatic (Delayed). Agree, I'm not after all out boot speed at the expense of system stability. And there is SW i still need, but I don't need them at startup.
    ColonetONeill, thats exactly what I want to do - delay the startup of the antivirus, the VPN, and the backup software. But I'm not sure how to do that. I completely disabled the VPN, and it shaved 3s off the boot time.
    Thanks for the suggestion of eBoostr. I'll have a look.

    i had the "Mailbox is on a different server" error too recently (mine shows up in ms outlook express) - and believe my problem came from having the hostnamealiases space delimited instead of comma separated (with no spaces, e.g. "foo.host1.com,bar.host2.com") - comma delimited, no spaces seems to be required ...
    i am having a different problem now though:
    i can login to communications express hosted domains via -
    the main host url using credentials like: [email protected]/passwd
    but when going to any of the hosted.com's urls, and trying to login without the @hosted1.com in the user - i get redirected to access manager (and subsequently can't login using either uid or [email protected] at the hosted1.com/uwc url).
    here's what i have in AMConfig.properties:
    com.sun.identity.server.fqdnMap[mail.hosted1.com]=mail.actual.org
    com.sun.identity.server.fqdnMap[mail.hosted2.com]=mail.actual.org
    com.sun.identity.server.fqdnMap[mail.hosted3.com]=mail.actual.org
    here's what i have in uwcauth.properties:
    virtualdomain.mode = y
    mail.actual.org.isvirutalhostname=mail.actual.org
    i have also added the cookiedomains in amconsole under service configuration --> platform - in addition to creating directories (hosted1.com, hosted2.com, hosted3.com) under /opt/SUNWuwc/WEB-INF/domain - containing the original files and directories under /opt/SUNWuwc/WEB-INF/domain (i was not clear if these directories should take this form e.g. including the .com or if they should just contain the domain-name --e.g. hosted1?)
    i can receive hosted email via pop using uid [email protected]/passwd, etc.
    thanks for any input.

  • Messaging Multiplexor

    We are running SunOne Messaging and Directory (Both version 5.2) We have a multiplexor/front-end server on a DMZ to enable access from the internet.
    The problem is the first time that you logon nothing happens. From the logs the last thing that you see is
    post /login.msc HTTP/1.0
    It then waits (about 10 minutes) before it comes up with
    username plaintext sid=jaehjgad proxy to mailstore.ourdomain.com
    It then sits there doing nothing. If you then refresh the page and put your login details in again it goes straight into your email.
    Can anyone explain this behaviour?

    Store and Multiplexor are both on 5.2 Patch level 1.21
    ulimit -n gave 256 for both boxes - we will swap that over tonight

  • Using the MoveUser utility in IMS 5.2 hotfix 1.21

    We are in need to move users from one store server to another.
    I am tryng to use the MoveUser utility but IMAP keeps coming back with the following error
    %Encryption or a stronger authentication mechanism required
    %Encryption or a stronger authentication mechanism required
    %Encryption or a stronger authentication mechanism required
    Server responded [Too many authentication failures]
    I'm running this as the privileged mail user
    and have the following imap service information on both servers
    service.imap.allowanonymouslogin = no
    service.imap.banner = "%h %p service (%P %V)"
    service.imap.createtimestamp = 20031121172923Z
    service.imap.enable = yes
    service.imap.enablesslport = no
    service.imap.idletimeout = 30
    service.imap.maxsessions = 4000
    service.imap.maxthreads = 250
    service.imap.modifytimestamp = 20040322150528Z
    service.imap.numprocesses = 1
    service.imap.objectclass = nsmsgCfgImap
    service.imap.plaintextmincipher = 0
    service.imap.port = 143
    service.imap.sslcachesize = 0
    service.imap.sslport = 993
    service.imap.sslusessl = no
    Anyone familiar with the MoveUser utility?
    Thanks

    MoveUser gains access to the user's mailboxes by use of the PROXYAUTH mechanism. You have to supply a "store admin" user for proxyauth, and the password for that.
    By default, the store admin's name is "admin", but it could be anything. Check your configutil output for "store.admins", and use the user found there.
    Test proxyauth by telnetting directly to the imap port, and giving commands like this:
    telnet server 143
    a login proxyauthuser proxyauthpassword
    (server should respond with something including OK)
    b proxyauth some_user
    (server should respond with something including OK)
    c select inbox
    (server should give you a listing of what's in the user's inbox. If you fail at any step, you are not correctly set up for proxyauth, and need to check all the steps).
    d logout

  • Problems after patch 120230-08

    I have installed that patch and i encountred a lot of problems. I'll start with the most important SSL imap, pop3 doesn't work. After upgrade i noticed that my ssl certification is out of date so i tried to recreate it
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -N -d /opt/sun/messaging/config -f /opt/sun/messaging/config/sslpassword.conf
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -S -n SampleRootCA -x -t "CTu,CTu,CTu" -s "CN=Sample Root CA, O=Sample.pl" -m 25000 -o /opt/sun/messaging/config/SampleRootCa.crt -d /opt/sun/messaging/config -f /opt/sun/messaging/config/sslpassword.conf -z /etc/passwd
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -S -n Server-Cert -c SampleRootCA -t "u,u,u" -s "CN=sun.workgroup.Sample.pl, o=Sample.pl" -m 25001 -o /opt/sun/messaging/config/SampleSSLServer.crt -d /opt/sun/messaging/config -f /opt/sun/messaging/config/sslpassword.conf -z /etc/passwd
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -V -u V -n SampleRootCA -d /opt/sun/messaging/config
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -V -u V -n Server-Cert -d /opt/sun/messaging/config
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -L -d /opt/sun/messaging/config/
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/certutil -L -n Server-Cert -d /opt/sun/messaging/config/
    /opt/sun/messaging/sbin/modutil -list -dbdir /opt/sun/messaging/config/
    chown mailsrv:mail /opt/sun/messaging/config/key3.db
    chown mailsrv:mail /opt/sun/messaging/config/cert8.db
    Did all that steps (where Sample = my company name) and every result from that command was as before. Checked configutil:
    service.imap.allowanonymouslogin = no
    service.imap.banner = "%h %p service (%P %V)"
    service.imap.enable = 1
    service.imap.enablesslport = yes
    service.imap.idletimeout = 30
    service.imap.maxsessions = 4000
    service.imap.maxthreads = 250
    service.imap.numprocesses = 1
    service.imap.plaintextmincipher = 0
    service.imap.port = 143
    service.imap.sslcachesize = 0
    service.imap.sslport = 993
    service.imap.sslusessl = yes
    Everything seems fine. I checked my old old configutil entries and turned out almost all 'encryption' entries aren't there. So i added those
    encryption.nscertfile = config/cert8.db
    encryption.nskeyfile = config/key3.db
    encryption.nsssl3 = on
    encryption.nsssl3ciphers = "rsa_rc4_40_md5,rsa_rc2_40_md5,rsa_des_sha,rsa_rc4_128_md5,rsa_3des_sha"
    encryption.rsa.nssslpersonalityssl = Server-Cert
    But everytime i added them i had:
    /opt/sun/messaging/lib/configutil -o encryption.nsssl3ciphers -v rsa_rc4_40_md5,rsa_rc2_40_md5,rsa_des_sha,rsa_rc4_128_md5,rsa_3des_sha
    OK SET
    WARNING: unrecognized option encryption.nsssl3ciphers has been set
    So i wonder what's up, what changed between versions. It was supposed to be quick fix but it wasnt :/
    My version:
    Sun Java(tm) System Messaging Server 6.3-0.08 (built Jun 8 2006)
    libimta.so 6.3-0.08 (built 08:28:13, Jun 8 2006)
    Linux workgroup.sample.pl 2.6.12-1.1381_FC3smp #1 SMP Fri Oct 21 04:03:26 EDT 2005 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
    Any help will be appreciated :/

    I've solved the problem myself. Turns out there were few sslpassword files.
    sslpassword file had just: mypassword
    while
    sslpassword.conf had Internal (Software) Token:mypassword
    seems the LEGIT one is just plain password in sslpassword file. Then it all works fine. Hopefully this will save some time to some ppl.
    Cheers

  • POP3 authentication problems, IMS 5.2

    All, I've successfully installed IMS 5.2 and have only run into one problem so far. The issue is: I have
    mailAllowedServiceAccess: +all:all
    set for all of my users and they are able to login to every service imap/http/smtp except for pop3.
    Here is the error I get whilst trying to pop mail.
    +OK ***.***.*** POP3 service (iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 (built Feb 21 2002))
    user <user>@<domain>
    +OK Name is a valid mailbox
    pass ********
    -ERR Not authorized to login as specified user
    I know the user info is correct as I am able to login via webmail and imap.
    Has anyone run into this before? Below is a copy of my pop configs.
    service.pop.allowanonymouslogin = no
    service.pop.banner = "%h %p service (%P %V)"
    service.pop.createtimestamp = 20020926194456Z
    service.pop.creatorsname = "uid=admin,ou=administrators,ou=topologymanagement,o=netscaperoot"
    service.pop.enable = yes
    service.pop.idletimeout = 10
    service.pop.maxsessions = 600
    service.pop.maxthreads = 250
    service.pop.modifiersname = "cn=msg-hoth,cn=iplanet messaging suite,cn=server group (2),cn=hoth.gte.net,ou=gte.net,o=netscaperoot"
    service.pop.modifytimestamp = 20020930152334Z
    service.pop.numprocesses = 1
    service.pop.objectclass = nsmsgCfgPop ,top
    service.pop.plaintextmincipher = 0
    service.pop.popminpoll = 0
    service.pop.port = 110
    service.pop.sslusessl = no

    Addendum.... I actually cannot use the SMTP authentication mechanism. So in the end, imap and http servers willl allow login, but pop3/smtp give the error:
    "535 5.7.8 Authorization Failuer (Not authorized to login as specified user)..."
    I appreciate anyone willing to help.

  • Admin proxy not allowed

    I am trying to run proxy authentication using the LDAP C SDK and the functions mentioned in the customization guide for ims 5.2.

    does anyone know why?

  • ACS performance issues

    Hi all,
    I wonder how to increase performance for ACS reporting in our SCOM 2012, we have the reporting server installed on the management server and the ACS database on another server.
    When we try to open a report with ACS, it is taking long time and for one day and exporting it takes too long with no luck.

    Hi,
    this is a very broad question and
    there is no easy answer.
    From a high level view we are talking about at least three things:
    SQL DB Engine performance,
    Reporting Services performance,
    Query performance.
    You can find a lot of articles on this
    topic here are just a few:
