Setting timecode on tape

Hi all, im working on Final Cut 5.1.4
I am writing a project to DVCAM on my DSR-11 for broadcast
Only thing is that the distributor wants the time code for project media itself to start at 01:00:00;00 but also have my slate and color bars to begin at 00:58:30;00 before the project. I set my time code in my timeline to reflect this but when I write to tape its begins timecode at 00:00:00;00 thus making the project media start at 00:01:30;00
How can I write the timecode to the tape to start at 00:58:30;00?
Thanks!

TC to DSR-11
Since FCP 4 we have been unable to stripe a new TC such as 00:58:00:00 or 01:58:00:00 to a DVCAM tape with the DSR-11. NO MORE!! I think I found a solution.
Get SimpleVideoOut from the Apple (its free):
http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/SimpleVideoOut.html
Then create a QT Movie in FCP or Xpress Pro from a sequence which has the starting TC you want on the tape. I just tried it with 00:58:00:00. In the timeline, I just put Bars & Tone for 90 seconds and a black slug for 45 (to take me over 01:00:00:00). You could create a sequence with whatever combination you wanted with the TC set to start at whatever timecode you need for your choice. But the Timeline TC MUST be set to your desired starting code. The exported QT file will have this TC in it.
Then load this DV QT movie into SimpleVideoOut (having selecting Firewire / Apple Firewire PAL or NTSC when you open the app).
Now load a fresh DVCAM tape and set your DSR-11 to:
REC MODE = DVCAM
DV IN TC = EXTERNAL
(Have the TC display turned on for this first test so you can verify it has worked.)
Then just hold the REC and PLAY buttons together on the DSR-11 and press play in the SimpleVideoOut app and the new TC will be recorded to your DVCAM tape. Hey presto you are now able to stripe a tape with what ever timecode you want using a DSR-11.
Remember to turn 'DV IN TC' back to INTERNAL on the DSR-11 when you come to record your edit to tape.
The problem with the DSR-11 is that it is not the best deck and starting recording at the exact TC, but playing with the pre-rolls should eventually get it spot on. I have had some success with FCP's 'Edit to Tape' and very good results with Avid Xpress Pro after a few tweaks.
Also, if you just had a black QT file, you can change the starting TC to suite the tape; i.e. 00:58:00:00 or 02:58:00:00 etc without going back into FCP or Xpress Pro and rendering out another QT. To do this, just use Sebsky Tools to alter the starting TC of the file.

If the SIM is out of your phone, find my phone needs a data connection, so could use wifi - IF in range of a wifi and one that it can join (ie. a known network or one that is wholly open so no login required).  Your phone could also simple be turned off, so not findable, or it may have been restored (plugged into iTunes and restored as new) again, making it permanently unfindable.  Honestly, for someone stealing an iPhone, this is likely the first thing they do - restore as new and it is theirs forever.
Find my iPhone is tied to the users iCloud account - the find function is part of the iCloud account's services and it communicates with the iCloud servers over a data connection - either wifi or 3G.
Have you set up your iCloud account on your replacement phone, and is it working properly on that phone?

Don't know anything about McAffe Enterprise Server, but if your employer is preventing you from using iCloud backup there's really no way to use it without removing this from your phone.  Unless you can convince the IT guys to make an exception.

  • Project Manager ruins timecode and tape name

After picture locking a sequence, I tried using Project Manager with the "collect files and copy to new location" option to consolidate for the colorist.
Unfortunately, the resulting files all lack tape names, and have incorrect timecode.  This is a serious problem, obviously, since the colorist will never be able to relink these clips.  Has anyone else gotten this process working?
I then tried cleaning the media cache database, and I ran the Project Manager again with the same settings.  This time, it created files with proper tape names, and incorrect timecode.
This project contains clips from multiple cameras, and the only ones having this problem are from a Sony FS700.

    That's a great idea.
Importing the sequence into a new PP project brings the accurate timecode and tape names, so it's easy to export all the clips.  But after queueing them up and exporting QuickTimes in AME, the new files all have timecode starting at zero and no tape name!  WTF??
Here is a screenshot with proof.  You can see file 00001.MTS in Premiere with timecode starting at 46:10:20 and in AME starting at zero.

  • No timecode on tape

I read a few different threads but didn't really get an answer.
I have a few tapes that were shot on a HD camera (don't know what kind at all) that were given to me that I'm trying to capture. All of them captured fine, except one where no timecode was found. The tape plays fine in my camera, plays fine in the capture window, there's just no timecode and can't capture.

Try setting Device Control in FCP's Capture Settings to "Non-Controllable Device" so FCP won't be looking for timecode when you use 'Capture Now.'
Or dub the tape to a new tape, then capture from the new tape.

  • Setting timecode

hello, i'm attempting to black a tape in order use the edit to tape feature in FCP, and i need to set the starting timecode on the deck itself to 00:00:58:00. I am using a Sony HVR-M15U HDV deck. If anyone has experience with this please help. Thank you.

You cannot EDIT TO TAPE to HDV...only PRINT TO VIDEO. Because HDV needs to conform back to a GOP format when you output back to HDV.
HDV isn't a mastering format. You cannot set up timecode the same way you can other formats. If you shoot with HDV, you generally master out to another HD format, like DVCPRO HD or HDCAM.

  • Set timecode to start at 0?

Is there any way to set the timecode for a movie imported into Compressor to start at 00:00:00:00?
I have some home movies in MPEG-2 format. I trimmed about 45 seconds off the beginning of my first movie and then imported the movie into compressor. I also have a chapter marker file that has all the chapters for the movie. The chapter marker timecodes start at 0, which is good, but Compressor is showing that my movie starts with a timecode of 45 seconds, so the chapters are all off by 45 seconds. I could go edit all the chapter files for all the movies and add the amount that I trimmed off the beginning, but it would be so much easier if I could set the timecode in Compressor back to zero.

Nope. I opened 20+ movies, some that I created, some that I converted, some that I bought from the iTunes Music Store and not one of them had a timecode track. I see video, sound, text, closed caption, etc., but no timecode tracks.
However, I was going straight into Compressor and not using Final Cut Pro so I decided to bring my movie into Final Cut Pro first. I was able to adjust the timecode to 0 in Final Cut Pro and then export to Compressor. In Compressor I read the chapter marker file and everything works the way I want it to. It did seem to export quite a bit slower though.

  • Setting timecode manually doesn't save in Premiere Pro CC

Hi, When I set the timecode of a clip manually (by clicking clip, modify, timecode) in Premiere Pro CC, everything works well until I quit out of Premiere Pro. When I quit and open the project again, the timecode has reverted back to the originaly timecode of the clip and my modifications were not saved. Has anyone had this issue or know how to fix it? Thanks so much!

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, even after restoring to default preferences, I still have the problem.
    It's Premiere Pro CC 7.0.0.
Sorry for the delay in my response-- wasn't able to get to a computer until now.
Thanks so much for any other advice you may have.

  • Setting Timecode on a Master

Hey guys, I need to run a DVCAM master for broadcast. The show has to start at 1:00:00;00. I've adjusted my FCP timeline accordingly, with bars and tone at 00:59:30;00. However, I can't figure out how to get the master to pick up the correct timecode from the timeline. It insists on starting at 00:00:00;00. So, when I try to Edit to Tape, the show starts an hour into the tape! How can I make the timecode on the master tape start at 00:59:30;00? Thanks.

That deck does not have a TC Preset function -the HVRM25 does.
It will pickup from existing timecode and increment it though. You could use a camera that can generate preset TC for 15-30 seconds or you need another deck.
Also, starting at 59:30:00 is a bit late. If this is as you say for broadcast, they will want bars and tone at the head. Stripe the tape from 58:00:00 and you can lay down a minute of bars from 58:30 > 59:30.
Then a further 30 secs black with the show start on the hour.

  • Setting Timecodes to burn to a Double-Layered Disk

    Greetings:
I am in DVD STUDIO PRO that has video run through FINAL CUT PRO HD.
I'm trying to burn to a double-layered disk, but I need to know what to do to set the time codes so that when DVD STUDIO PRO gets to the end of the first layer of the DVD it can read the timecode break to go to the next layer and finish the video. It stops Formatting because it doesn't see any timecode break.
I have read the manual, but it makes no sense to me.
What is the procedure I need to go through to make this happen?

Ah so it is a bit different than this thread
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4901196#4901196
So you need to set a Dual Layer Break Point?
ince you are using a Dual Layer Disc, there has to be a break point where it crosses over from Layer 0 to Layer 1, if you have no Chapter Markers at all (or a limited number of Markers, none of which fall near the point where more than half the project will be placed on Layer 0) (Was your test project a DVD-9 also?) -- In general, Layer 0 has to be bigger than Layer 1
    What you do is
1.) Set up markers in the areas where your would guesstinmate the Layer Break(s) should be
2.) Build the project (but not format)
3.) Format a Disc (in the dialog that comes up, click on advanced tab, then where it says break point, use the pulldown which will have all valid breakpoint markers dark/black, while non-valid Layer Break Markers will be faded) and selct one of the darkend selections.
    4.) Press burn

Any advice to complete set up of messages on my new ipad? I cannot complete 'stage 3 - tap and send'?

A fairly common error people make when using messages, is to type their outgoing message in the Subject field which is just above the Message field.  In fact, I think it's a good idea to turn the message field to OFF.

  • Viewing Timecode from Tape, Not Timeline

I am doing some intense edit work which requires Timecode viewing of the footage as well as the running time. How might I view the footage Timecode w/out stopping FCP to check it manually? Must be a way; FCP is now an industry standard. Thanks.

slap the time code reader filter on the footage in the timeline until you lock picture. Be sure to remove it before you do any color correcting etc, as it then becomes impossible to select all remove attributes>filters.

  • TS3850 I am using a Sony HBR -VLU camera to import into Final Cut 10. Plugging into an I MAc that doesn't have a firewire port. The camera is not being recognized by the computer. The camera is set to play tape too. Why is camera not recognized?

I am trying to import from the camera into an I-MAC. I'm told the I-mac does not have the firewire port, but has thunderbolt. Is the only way to get video from the camera via a firewire port? Is someone giving me bad information as to the firewire port not being on the I-MAC? The camera is not being recognized. Thanks in advance.

Apple has moved on from Firewire and the current iMacs (and most MBPs) have Thunderbolt, USB3 and USB2.
There are Firewire toThunderbolt adaptors. Here's one. You also want a four pin to nine pin FW cable to run from your camera to the adaptor.

  • Exporting a Sequence timecode to DV Tape?

I have spent more than and hour looking for this answer on the boards and have been unsuccessful. It seems like most editors should know how to do this, but I do not.
When the tape starts, I need the time code to read 00:98:00:00 and then have black and color bars to play for 2 minutes and then the Sequence starts playing at 01:00:00:00.
I need to do this because I am sending this project to a company to have closed captions and audio descriptions added to it. They need a timecoded tape in order to accurately do their job. I believe exporting the timecode to tape this way is the standard among professional editors.
I have a Sony DVCAM DSR-11. It plays DV, MiniDV and C/'/16K tapes.
Is this Deck capable of exporting the sequences timecode to tape? If so, can I use a MiniDV tape or do I have to use a C/'/16K tape? I believe a C/'/16K tape is a DVCAM tape?
If not, what deck do I need to buy in order to do this?
The closed captioning company is asking for the project on a timecoded Beta SP, Digi Beta or DVCpro tape. Are these the standard tape formats among professionals?
I want to provide projects to companies in a professional way. Please advice.
    Thank you,
