Setup - Firmware update - Media

It's been a short while since I've posted. I was having a lot of trouble with the unit I had and eventually was advised to replace it by WD support. I am setting up my new one and want to make sure it's set up correctly. All I have done so far is to install the drives, set up Raid 1 configuration and update the firmware. I have not moved any data to the device yet.  The one of the issues I was having was disabling the media cataloging. Disabling it in the settings nor on the share would keep it from processing for hours and hours creating thumbnails.  It looks like there has been a firmware update, because when I disable it in the settings, the option on the share is disabled. Was my old unit just not handing that correctly? Has this been improved? Is anyone else having trouble with this?

The first few directories I moved there seemed to work, they did not get indexed. But today I moved a large directory there and it began indexing. Someone has to come up with a solution to this? Why is that even an option? I'm trying to run a business off of the drive, not store my little sister's MP3's.

  • Updating Media Hub firmware *without* an Internet connection? (+ A few other questions)

    Hi everyone! :-)
I recently purchased an NMH305 in the DSG retail stock clearance, which I am planning on using as a "Black hole" for my audio, video and software collections. Before I begin setting it up though, I need to check on a few things and ask a few questions. :-)
First things first, here's a brief overview of my network and some other stuff:
My network has no connection to the Internet whatsoever. I was previously online with a major UK ISP, but because of numerous connection issues and the fact that a direct connection has negative impacts on my lifestyle, I decided to get rid of it and do without.
Consequently, all of my access to the Internet (E.G: Posting here) is done through local libraries and friends connections.
Most of my systems run Windows XP, but I also have a few Ubuntu, Fedora, and OEM firmware based clients knocking around as well. Windows VII and/or a mass switch-over to Linux may occur in the future.
All network clients are wired up with 100mbps fast ethernet (No wi-fi)
My Media Hub currently has it's 500GB WD Green Caviar installed, but my plan is to replace this with two 500GB 7200rpm Hitachi drives stripped out of USB external caddies for quicker access times, greater peace of mind (I don't really trust Western Digital products) and use the more efficient Caviar as an external HDD insted.
Because I like to keep my systems as "light" as possible; I'd like to skip using the bundled set-up CD (Which'll install a lot of stuff that I don't need) and insted set-up the Media Hub manually using a web browser or terminal connection.
I consider myself to be an experienced and advanced user, and therefore I'm comfortable with the idea of configuring and operating my Media Hub via an SSH or Telnet session.
Downloading, backing-up and restoring Firmware by hand:
Anyhow...The first question I'd like to ask is How can I backup and update the firmware on my media hub using only my local network? I know full well that I can download the firmware images using just a web browser, but I cannot seem to find a direct URL anywhere on the Linksys site. The closest lead I've got so far is http://downloads.linksysbycisco.com/downloads/firmware/NMH_FW_3_18_15_B_ReleaseNotes.txt...But no logical variations of this URL that I've tried (Drop the _ReleaseNotes.txt, try .bin .img .tar .tgz and .tar.gz extensions) have resulted in success. :-(
If anyone has the direct URLs for the firmware images, I'd be most greatful. Failing that, if anyone can tell me the URL that the Media Hub uses to perform a version check (A few packets dumped via WireShark during a check will do) I can follow the HTTP chain from there by hand. :-)
Naturally, I'm assuming that there is a means by which to dump and upload firmware to/from the Media Hub (Via an SSH session, most likely) but if not, would serving the firmware update from one of my own systems (Using a record on my local DNS) work, or does the Media Hub use a secure connection for this?
Operating the Media Hub via SSH/Telnet:
As the Media Hub runs a customised version of Linux, I presume that administration via Telnet and SSH are available. I assume that the default login would be root / admin (I'm assuming the web interface also uses the root account for it's administrative logon) but is that correct...Or would I need different credentials to those for a Telnet/SSH login?
Installing new HDDs: Anything need keeping off the old one?
Finally; As I mentioned above, I'm planning to swap the OEM drive supplied with two others before use. I'm currently leafing through the users manual and am about to come across the procedure given for drive replacement, but given the size of the Media Hub's UI - Which looks to me to be pretty heavily featured - I doubt the whole lot would fit on the Hub's firmware flash...So presumably I'd need to back-up interface data and files from the OEM disk to the new disks first.
Dumping data from one disk to another isn't a problem (dd has become one of my favourite utilities over the past year) but - Thinking from the viewpoint of efficiency - Is it possible to restore the UI data and interface alone (No media lists or cache info - That's better regenerated after) without having to dump the first x sectors from one disk to another?
Also; Given the unit comes with a 5400rpm WD Green Caviar, will the Media Hub's PSU handle two standard 3.5" HDDs (Which could draw about 15-20w each) without problems? :-)
Farewell for now, apologies for the length of this post, and many thanks in advance for any help! >:-)

  • 16x DVD-R Media and 106D Firmware Update??

I just picked up some Memorex 16x DVD-R discs and was wondering if there is a firmware update needed for the G5 Superdrive.
I checked for firmware updates here and could not find anything, but as I have found out in the past, this does not mean there isn't one.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Gary

    Thanks for the reply Chris.
Just cause we're level 3 or 4 doesn't necessarily mean we know what we're talking about.
Ah, but the alter I have erected for level 3 & 4 promises all prayers are heard, if not answered....
I haven't tried the 16x media yet, but like 4x media and lower becoming extinct since the introduction of 8x, I am sure 16x media will dominate within a couple months. As such, I just wanted to make sure the new media was not going to frag my 4x Super drive.
I checked my drive through System Profiler and got the following:
    Model:     PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-106D
    Revision:     A606
    Serial Number:     CHDL009866WL
    Detachable Drive:     No
    Protocol:     ATAPI
    Unit Number:     0
    Socket Type:     Internal
I checked out the latest update link you provided, but it does not say what the revision is, so I don't know if I have the most resent. Although I haven't had any issues the 4x Superdrive using 8x, I have had several failures with the 8x burner in a Pioneer 8x DVD Recorder set top unit.... same vender so I anticipate possible problems.
    Anyway, thanks for the response.

  • IMac G4/800/17" doesn't see media - firmware update?

I have been trying to burn a DVD to transfer some audio tracks but my early iMac, G4/800/17", does not see the DVD-RW disk - it spins for awhile then spits it out. When I tried the same disk in my newer G4/1.25 it sees it fine. Could this be a firmware issue? Or perhaps because its a different optical drive its not going to work with a newer DVD-RW? (Maxell DVD-R works, Memorex DVD+RW does not - I tried 3 different disks).
The profiler on the older iMac ID's the optical drive as: Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-104, with Firmware Revision A227.
Newer iMac has a Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-106D, Firmware Revision A612.
I checked the updates and couldn't find one that addresses this issue.

Cool! If nothing else, it was fun trying to read the translation. Didn't know you could do that with Sherlock, so thanks for that info, too. It appears that there are 2 unofficial firmware updates for my old Pioneer 104. A little scary to try them without knowing if they address my specific problem, but heck, what's the worst that could happen? I've got a fire extinguisher nearby......

  • Airport no longer working after firmware update

Before i get to my question, i think that it is necessary to give a bit of background as to why i have set my network up the way i have.
I recently moved in with my girlfriend and brought my broadband package with me as i would have to pay a fee to cancel my contract within the contract period.
This would be all well and good except that in the new location, the service provider can only supply broadband via an ADSL phone line (provided by a seperate telephone company) furthermore they (Virgin Media - i'm gonna name names) provide a cheap USB only modem - which in turn is only compatible with PPC Macs.
Fine for me, but not so great for my girlfriend who has an Intel Mac Mini and not so great for my new Airport Extreme which of course requires a modem with an ethernet connection.
Bearing in mind that it's just after Christmas and i can't afford to just run out and buy an ethernet modem or change my ISP - i thought that i would try something out.
With the USB modem connected to my old PPC G4 i then connected the ethernet cable (that i had connecting our two Macs allowing them to share the internet connection) - from my G4 to the WAN port on the Airport...
Now i'm a real networking newbie so i was a little suprised when suddenly and effortlessly i had created a wireless network that the Mac Mini and our iPod Touches could see and use. I set up security etc and all was well and good...for two days.
Then Airport received a firmware update and now it doesn't work and resetting the Airport doesn't help.
So now i have to get my hands dirty and like i say, i know jack about networks or the terminology.
With this configuration - and obviously we know that it can work (somehow!)
should i be in bridge mode or sharing a single IP address? and just how am i connecting to the internet. Static IP address/DHCP - PPPoE? I know what these abbreviations stand for but i don't know what they mean.
In the course of 'playing around' with the settings i have seen a message saying that Airport has an invalid I.P. address - why is it invalid and is that only because of something that i have changed or is that the route of the problem?
All the machines can see each other and the only clue i can provide is this log extract.

Can anyone help? I've been struggling with this for days now.
    Thanks in advance.
    Steve.

Your setup is convoluted, but it should work. A few comments:
    1. The base station should be configured to get an IP address using DHCP, which it will get from your PPC which (with internet connection sharing turned on) is now acting as a DHCP server.
    2. The base station should be configured in bridge mode, since your PPC (with intenet connection sharing turned on) is now acting as a router.
    3. I suggest you should turn off the network firewall on the PPC as long as your are running this sort of setup. Not ideal, but it will prevent all sorts of connectivity problems between the internet and everything downstream of your PPC's ethernet port.

  • So slow to bring firmware updates E3000

Will this router ever see a firmware update so that we can have some additional functionality? The version of Twonky Media server that was bundled with this router was old to begin with, and now we are stuck with it? I tried the E4200 but it just kept spinning my drive that's parked in a ThermalTake BlackX, at least the 3000 doesn't do that, but when can we expect some new firmware, it's been 8 months. I used to love Linksys, but with this kind of support I may have to move to a different brand, and I bet I am not alone. If you do release firmware please make sure it doesn't break the E3000 like you broke the 4200.

As per the issue that you explained for that concern we would like to know that at present which router is you are using.... If it is E3000 then please inform us the firmware version of the Router...
If it is E4200 than you need to download Cisco Connect 1.4 from the Cisco website (homesupport.cisco.com ) which contains the Virtual USB setup for the E4200 routers... Then only Your USB hard drive or memory stick can be installed and shared on multiple computers using the same Cisco Connect setup.... There after they never be slow as well...

  • Laserjet 1525nw firmware update for macintosh

    Printer HP LaserJet 1525 NW
    OS Mac OSX Lion 10.7.2
I received an email from HP saying I needed to upgrade the firmware. I downloaded and ran the Mac installer. It crashes when it tries to download the firmware update from the internet. There is no explicit description of the error - the installer simply crashes. What am I supposed to do? I have tried repeatedly downloading the intaller in case the first copy was corrupt. The crash takes place consistently at the same point in the firmware installation process.

  • WRT350N: 1.03.7 Firmware Update

I bought this router a couple of months ago with high hopes. The wired and wireless capabilities worked as advertised. I especially liked the “Storage” concept with “Media Server”, etc.
However, I have never been able to get the storage capability to work properly with Vista, but I had high hopes the promised new firmware update would solve the problems.
I waited patiently for the update and today attempted to install it per carefully prepared instructions I had gathered over the past few weeks.
Alas, apparently 1.03.7 “destroyed” the router. That’s the term LinkSys tech support used when they issued me a Case # for exchange today.
    How sad….
    What a way to run a railroad….
Disclaimer: I own stock in Cisco Systems.

I updated my firmware from 1.05.8 to the new 1.03.7 one.
Now, port forwarding doesn't work. On the port forwarding page whenever I try to set it up where the external port matches the internal port, it will say that I have overlapping port setting and that I should change it. So, I cannot save any port mappings I make...
I think the javascript is not correct for that page in this new firmware. So, I can't setup any port forwarding in the router. I hope a new firmware is released quickly to fix that javascript.
Other issues that haven't been fixed since 1.03.2 and that still persist are as follows:
    1. The DHCP client table doesn't accurately indicate if a machine is connected as wireless or wired. Wired connections show up as "LAN" and wireless connections show up as "Wireless", but sometimes a connection that is actually "Wireless" is labeled as "LAN".
    3. DHCP table shows expiry times for machines that are in DHCP reservation table (this is incorrect and misleading...)
    4. On the Wireless -> Advanced Wireless Settings -> Help page, the first paragraph is repeated.
    5. On the Administration -> Management -> Help page, the "Backup and Restore" entry at the bottom of the table is in a different font.
    6. On the Storage -> Share -> Help page, the labels in the left column of the table are not bold as they are on other help pages.

  • Firmware update - Cable Telstra Gateway Max - Netgear C6300

Firmware update - Cable Telstra Gateway Max - Netgear C6300
Good news. Over the next couple of weeks we will be rolling out an update to our Telstra Gateway Max. The firmware updates will roll out in the early morning and this process is expected to finish by mid May  for all devices.
    The current firmware: Version 1.01.06
    The upgraded firmware: Version 1.04.02
    UPDATE 10/06/2015
I have confirmed that the roll out was halted so that additional fixes can be included.  Those who already received the most recent update will also receive the next update.
This should resume over the next few weeks.
    What you need to do
Nothing. The new firmware will be remotely upgraded on active Cable Broadband services that have this gateway connected. The upgrade will occur during the early morning so as to minimise disruption to the customer. The gateway should automatically go through the process of upgrading and come back online when finished. All settings will be retained.
If you experience any issues with the gateway not coming back online, restarting the gateway should resolve in most instances.
Customers who connect a new modem after the roll out has been completed, can expect their modem to be automatically updated within 48 hours of registration.
    What’s better
The majority of the updates are improvements the previous firmware version. These include:
    • Flexibility in supporting larger external media storage devices such as external hard drives and USB sticks
    • Greater stability in the Wi-Fi
    • Improvements to VPN tunnelling functionality in the gateway
    • Media streaming improvements
    • General gateway Control Panel (GUI) look and feel improvements
    What’s new
    1. Wi-Fi Mesh, is a new feature that is developed to work in conjunction with supported Telstra Wi-Fi range extenders. It allows for a single wireless network name to be shared by all devices and automatic connection to a stronger Wi-Fi signal source within your home.
The Telstra Wi-Fi Extender Max is expected to be launched in late May.
    2. “Time of Day Parental Controls” feature, giving customers the ability to put rules on individual devices connected to their gateway, based on time. This complements the already existing “Keyword Filtering Parental Controls” feature that was already available, giving customers greater control over the viewing habits of users.
Customers can access this new feature by logging into the gateways’ Control Panel via the Basic or Advanced menu. To do this:
    i. Type in http://telstra.gateway/ in a web browser on a device that is connected to the gateway (either via    Wi-Fi or Ethernet cable)
    ii. Begin Parental control feature
         a. via the Basic Menu by clicking “PARENTAL CONTROL” along the top menu and select the “Time of          Day Access” tab
         b. via the Advanced Menu by clicking “ADVANCED VIEW” along the top menu and select the “Time of          Day Access” along the left hand side menu
    iii. Click on “Add Rule”
iv. Setup a rule that applies to the customers’ needs and click “Apply” to Save.
Rules can be applied for each individual device or by network type i.e. Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

    Professor Phone
I am not a Telstra employee. I have been a mobile customer since 1963
Who are you? Get Smart with the shoe-phone? There were no mobile phones in 1963.

  • New symptoms since latest firmware update

OK I have a 1tb sky hd box which hasn't had any really annoying issues up until the new firmware update (the one with the new Kids tile which is annoying in its own right).  Anyway, I have been watching the cricket on SS2 and every so often when they break for a short advert between overs I've lost sound when it tries to revert to DD5.1 after switching from 2.0 on the adverts.  I have to change channel and back again to get the sound back.    Also, for the first time, my planner was showing empty today so I had to do a planner rebuild which solved the issue.  Still, at least they  seem to have solved the sound dropout issue.  So just heads up for anyone else with a 1tb box who experiences the same issues.

    (Quoting Karl Petersen here:)
There's a bug in iMovie 6 that makes it impossible to re-edit (Update) photo clips previously imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON. The source photo, normally stored in the Media folder of the project, is (inappropriately) discarded when you empty the iMovie trash. The clips Update as black clips and the preview is usually black too, if I recall.
The workaround is to 1) drag the photo from the iMovie trash to the iMovie Clips pane; or 2) never empty the iMovie trash.

  • WiFi Problems - TC to MP, since recent firmware update

    Hello,
i found some threads about other people having trouble here, but nothing seemed to fit my situation.
I have 2 Macs - a Mac Pro (Early 2008) and a MacBook (Late 2008). And a Time Capsule, which i purchased sometime between the Macs. Up to now, everything worked perfect, both machines were connected via WiFi to the TC. But since the recent firmware update, the MacBook works fine with the TC, absolutely no problems, but the Mac Pro (a bit longer distance) doesn't work any longer.
This started on Friday (i don't use the MP daily), it was impossible to get a WiFi connection, tried re-entering connection data and so - no success.
On Saturday, i used the cable to check the TC configuration, everything worked fine, and after fiddling around with the setup, i finally got WiFi working again.
Sunday - MP was off all the day.
Today - Just powered it up, no WiFi. When i disable and re-enable AirPort, it gets a connection for a second or 2, but then drops it. If i get a connection, i have a strong signal (all bars black), so signal quality isn't an issue. And before the update, everything worked fine, the only change is the firmware update last week.
The MacBook doesn't have any issues, no matter, where it is located. I'm currently writing this post on it while syncing some home directory stuff with the MP (MB connected via WiFi, MP connected via cable).
So what is this new problem? After damaging USB to complete unusability, Apple now continues with the WLAN features? What comes next? When will all this be fixed?
Meanwhile, i think it was not the best idea to switch to Apple about a year ago. The continous quality drops get painful meanwhile. I wonder when my iPhone gets unusable (which also works fine with the TC, by the way
    ...Michael

    Hi again,
okay. It really was the 7.4.1 firmware. This morning, i reverted to 7.3.2, did a full reset, reconfigured everything, and now my network works fine as it did before.
It seems to be important to reconfigure the TC, as just downgrading the firmware didn't really help, while full reconfig with 7.4.1 also doesn't help.
I now turned off the automatic search for new versions on the TC. I will be informed by the AP Express, which has no problems with 7.4.1 yet.
Hope, Apple re-introduces quality control soon and doesn't make the customers be the beta-testers.

  • Zen Touch latest Firmware Update...player not connec

I tried installing the latest Firmware update for my Zen Touch (released 2-09).
The player is connected and recognized by Windows and the Media Explorer. However, when I try to install the new Firmware it keeps saying "player not connected".
I tried d/l two different language packages cause I wasn't sure what counted - player language or operating system langauge. Anyway, that didn't make a difference.
So what do I do? I have no idea where to start. It's firmware for the correct device connected through Windows XP.
I have made a firmware update before, which worked fine. After that I updated the media explorer software.
Help is very much appreciated! Thank you in advance.

Perhaps it's worth making sure no software is using the player, so reboot the PC, and turn off the Creative Detector. Then try again.
Are you trying to upgrade to the .0.03 version?

  • TC issues after latest firmware update

Here is the skinny, my TC went through the normal firmware update a bit ago. Wednesday my Internet stopped working, when I use the Airport Utility app it showed the TC online, at first, then it gave me the error that the TC did not have a valid IP. Thought might have been a problem on my ISP's end so I grabbed another router and set it up Internet no problem. Has to be the new firmware right so I pushed the firmware back 3 versions, and still the same thing no valid IP but connected to the Internet but no HDD (Yes it said not a valid IP but connected to the Internet on one wireless PC). Everything else in the house would not connect to the TC they could see it but when you went to connect never asked for a password and I got the spindle of death type deal. I saved my settings and did a hard reset with the button on the back of the TC, started over and rebuilt the connection, same thing happened not a valid IP. I have read that Apple released 3 different firmware updates supposedly the last one works, it doesn't when I load the firmware I get the same error TC does not have a valid IP. I need some help, I have cycled through power down and power up situations over and over. Anyone have any other suggestions?

    Need some more info.
What is the modem.. make and model?
Is it both modem and router or just a modem?
What is the actual model of the TC.. the number from the base.. A1xxx where the x are numbers.
The latest firmware is an issue.. that is 7.6.4 and you should go back to 7.6.1
But it does seem hard to get rid of properly.
I want you to do a factory reset not just a hard reset.
Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.
Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.
Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on..  all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).
Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.
    Note..
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.
No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
Please redo the setup using all SMB names.. that is short, no spaces and purely alphanumeric characters.
eg TCgenx (use actual gen if you want) for base station name.
TCwifi for wireless name. (or TC24ghz and TC5ghz which is well worth naming both bands so you can test more carefully).
Please download and install a v5 utility on a computer if any of them use up to Mountain Lion.
Tell us what OS the computers are running and I can tell you how to install the old airport utility.
Test the TC in bridge to your other router is also a good alternative.

  • IMovie Preview Not Working since latest Firmware Update (11/14/2006)

I was working on an iMovie project without incident until an automatic Firmware update was completed. Since the update, the editing preview function of iMovie is a black screen. The movie plays, but when you attempt to edit the Ken Burns effects, etc ... the preview screen is black so you are unable to edit a viewable screen. Strange ... anyone else - post firmware update issues on the MacBook Pro?

    (Quoting Karl Petersen here:)
There's a bug in iMovie 6 that makes it impossible to re-edit (Update) photo clips previously imported with the Ken Burns checkbox ON. The source photo, normally stored in the Media folder of the project, is (inappropriately) discarded when you empty the iMovie trash. The clips Update as black clips and the preview is usually black too, if I recall.
The workaround is to 1) drag the photo from the iMovie trash to the iMovie Clips pane; or 2) never empty the iMovie trash.
