Severe banding issue in shadow areas

Short Version: Having severe banding issues in shadow areas in Lightroom. Need to know how/what to set my color profile to to fix this issue. Lengthier description and images below.
I have read several posts here in the Lightroom forums about others who are experiencing the same type of banding issues, but I haven't seen any definitive answers on how to solve the problem.
I was able to take a couple screenshots of the issue that I am seeing. The image looks very different in Photoshop, Lightroom, Windows Photo Gallery, and also rendered in IE7. Screenshots of the image in Lightroom and the image in Photoshop are posted below at a 100% crop of the affected area. The first image is how it appears in Lightroom and the second image is how it appears in Photoshop.
From what I have read elsewhere the problem has to do with how Lightroom uses color profiles. I do not have much experience with color profiles, so I'd like to get everyone's recommendation on what color profile I should be using, and maybe a link to some information on setting color profiles and how to fix this issue. The image looks so much different in Lightroom than it does elsewhere, that I can't see myself being able to trust Lightroom to process my images.
Some info on my setup. Shoot RAW with Canon Rebel XT. Use a Dell with Pentium D running Windows Vista. Monitor is a Dell 2007FP, and currently I am using the Dell 2007FP color profile as far as I can tell.

Don, Bob!
I think it is quite obvious that the Eric's problem is not banding per se (and the related cure by fiddling with black setting), but rather about the mismatch between how the file looks in LR's Develop 100% view and how the same file (or an exported file) looks in Photoshop.
Eric!
I am afraid there is no definite answer to this problem. Indeed there are a number of Windows users that have reported this problem. A very exhaustive and inconclusive thread is this:
http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx?128@@.3bc3578d
The bottom line so far seems to be this:
LR on Windows uses Windows ICM to generate how the image looks on the screen, while PS uses Adobe own engine to generate this. Somehow this set-up appears not to work reliably with LR - the on-screen image in LR 100% develop differs from the same file's appearance in PS or other color managed applications. The mystery here is that other applications that seem to use Windows ICM still manage to show image correctly, but not LR. But anyway, the Windows ICM appears to be the culprit here.
The amount of difference people see depends on the complexity of the monitor profile used. LUT based Version 4.0 profiles will be affected worst - not only shadow detail, but the overall tonality and colors may be off. The best match is achieved with simple matrix based version 2.0 profiles - on my machine the mismatch occurs only in deep shadows were I see banding/splotchiness in LR and only under certain Develop settings.
(Incidentallly, on Windows XP (and older) machines one should ALWAYS use ver 2.0 profiles, as Windows ICM does not support ver 4.0 profiles. I also think that Windows ICM cannot handle LUT based profiles correctly. My own experiments showed that using LUT based monitor profile resulted in mismatch between PS CS2 and other applications (like Canon DPP), not only LR. BTW - as you are using generic monitor profile, I can almost bet that it is a matrix ver 2.0 profile (good thing).)
I am curious about the Vista thing though. I had certain hopes that this image appearance problem in LR would be eliminated on Vista, as it uses the Microsoft's new Windows Color System which incororates an updated ICM that now supports ver 4.0 profiles and reportedly has many bugs of the previous ICM fixed. However, if your report is true and the image mismatch is not due to some other factors, then it seems that Vista does not solve this.

  • Lightroom 4 - Banding/Posterization in shadows

    Hi,
Ever since I upgraded to LR4, I've noticed severe banding/posterization in the shadow areas when using the graduated filter with reduced exposure or using the vignette to on Amount -100.
I previously used these tools in LR3 to create fade to black areas in my shots, but have noticed that now, instead of a nice smooth gradient, I get a hard black edge, with a green band stippled into the black before returning to (in this particular case) a grey backdrop rather than a smooth transition from black (like I used to get with LR3).
Initially I thought it was my GFX card as my main one died and I temporarily replaced it with an older card. However, I recently purchased an Nvidia GEForce 630 as a replacement and it's still an issue. I also exported a file and viewed it on my partner's HP latop and the issue was still there.
I googled LR4 shadow banding to try and find answers but didn't have much luck. Is any one else experiencing this issue, or do I just have some sort anomoly?
    Tech info::
    Windows 7 64bit
    Lightroom 4.1
    Dell 2408 WFP monitor
    GeForce GT630
    Spyder 3 Calibration
Any help would be appreciated as at this point I'm not sure whether it's something with my system or LR4.
    Thanks in advance.

There is an issue with the 'local tools' in that they are applied before the global tools, which can reduce dynamic range in the highlight and shadow areas. This may also be the case for the Post-Crop Vignetting tool, but I haven't tested it.
    http://forums.adobe.com/message/4612100#4612100
Why it only shows up with certain cameras is probably due to the available dynamic range in the individual raw image files.
Another possible issue that could be contributing to the "banding" artifacts is your Dell 2408WFP wide gamut monitor. Using a wide gamut monitor with 24 bit display data stretches the available gradations (16,777,216 colors) over a wider range, and provides less smoothness (i.e. banding). Many wide gamut monitor users will argue that this is NOT the case for them and that may be true. But anytime you use "extreme settings" in LR (100% settings, two graduated filters/spot tools) you're setting up a situation where banding may become visible. Try exporting an image with banding using TIFF, ProPhoto RGB profile, and 16 bit data, and then view it on another system equipped with a standard gamut display. You can also download this Ramp test file from AMD's site, import it into LR, and see if you have visible banding:
    http://www.amd.com/us/Documents/ramp.psd
Photoshop supports a full 30 bit display data path when using a 30 bit graphics card, but Lightroom only supports 24 bit display data.
In short you have multiple things in LR that may be causing the artifacts you are seeing. My best advice is to use the global controls more heavily (Highlights, Shadows)  and lighten up on the locals, since they can reduce the dynamic range in your image.

  • Exported JPEGs Distorted in Shadow Areas

    I own a Nikon D7000 and I shoot 14bit RAW.
In Lightroom 3.3 the preview images were distorted, only in development mode the images were fine. I reported to Adobe on this and they seem to have fixed this issue.
In Lightroom 3.3 -- and still in 3.4 -- the exported JPEGs are distorted when the exported image is resized:
A lighter version of the same crop (for illustrative reasons):
As you can see, the gradient has serious artefacts, especially when going from green to black. It is a 90% JPEG quality exported of 1050px width. I have seen this for different image qualities (80-100%), though. This does not occur when the image is exported full size.
    Can anybody confirm this?
It seems that this only happens for dark shadows.
I had a Canon G9 that I used with Lightroom and I have never seen a behaviour like this. Right now the export is useless to me.

I've had some discussions about this with Adobe folks during the LR 3 beta phase, but that is all behind a wall now. I think they did put in the dithering into Lightroom now. I still think it is your monitor profile. Also realize that the displays in laptops including the MacBook Pros are not actually full 8-bit displays and you will always see some banding in them. See for example this page: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/gradient.php My guess is that that will show banding on your machine in the shadow areas. Also another issue is that you have to look at these displays at precisely the right angle because you will get raised shadows by quite a bit if you look at them just a few degrees off. One thing to do is to use a test image ( I use monitor_test_txt22.png from this page: http://www.normankoren.com/makingfineprints1A.html ). When you squint the image should be uniform. If not slant the display until it looks uniform.

  • HP PhotoSmart 7510 suddenly has severe connectivity issues

I have a HP PhotoSmart 7510 printer since about 2 months. Initial setup worked like a charm and the printer has been working pretty much perfectly for the last 2 months. Wireless printing, scanning and internet access on the printer (e.g. for Facebook photos) all worked. Just from time to time i would get the occasional (mildly annoying) message on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable" but it usually worked itself out and whenever I needed it to work, it did work.
But since a few days ago, it has some severe connectivity issues. I didn't change any settings on the printer, router or computer - the issues just started appearing by themselves. I startet getting much more frequent messages on my computer saying "scan to computer is currently unavailable". I noticed I couldn't print anymore, and restarting computer, printer and/or router didn't help at all. The only thing so far i managed to print wirelessly since the problems started were the first 5 pixel rows of an image I tried to print, the rest didn't transmit.
It seems the printer still connects to the WLAN but printing and scanning no longer work, and whenever I try to access a web service on the printer (like Facebook) it says it has no internet connection, even though the WLAN light is lit up (not blinking) and all the wireless status reports say "congratulations, no problems found" and display IPs etc. just like normal.
I looked at the threads "PhotoSmart 7510 connects to router, but not to the web.", "Wireless printer (HP Photosmart 7510) not connecting to network" and "Photosmart 7510 won't connect to Web Services" but they weren't a big help. Activating EWS didn't work because even though the printer showed its IP address to be 192.168.1.3, when I entered this in my web browser it didn't find the printers configuration page.
I tried the following steps from one of the threads:
    1. Restore the Network defaults
    2. Unplug the printers power cord while it is still on. Leave it unplugged and walk to the router.
    3. While the router is still on, unplug the power cord from the router, leave it unplugged for 30 seconds, then reconnect the power cord to the router. Once plugged back in the router should power on automatically.
    4. Plug the power cord back into the printer. Once plugged back in the printer should power on automatically.
    5. Run the Wireless Setup Wizard to reconnect the printer to your wireless network.
    6. Try enabling Web Services.
I followed these steps exactly. Interestingly, even though I had done step 1 and restored the network settings to factory defaults, after turning back on, the printer somehow still had its old settings saved and reconnected to the network.
It seemed to have fixed the problem, the printer finally had internet access again (Facebook app showed my photos) and scan to computer found my PC. But after just about 3 minutes, the printer had lost its internet connectivity again. When opening the Facebook app, it displayed the same error message it did before. And printing no longer worked as well.
So, what is wrong with this printer?! It has the newest software update by the way (I checked during the 3 minutes it had internet access.) My computer is a HP Windows 7 x64 machine (EliteBook 6930p) and the router I'm using is a Netgear WNDR3700.
I specifically bought this printer for my studies at university. In one week i have my exams and in order to study I REALLY need to be able to print some of my course materials! So any help as quickly as possible would be greatly appreciated. Or do you think this is a case for a warranty replacement, considering the printer's really strange and error-prone behavior?
    Thanks a lot!

I can assure you that it is not a router issue.  It appears to me that it is a driver compatibility with Windows OS.  After trying to get to the bottom of this since my Photosmart 7525 was new and reading just about every forum and blog, I have come to the conclusion that the issue must be related to the HP driver itself.
The issue does not seem to affect any Mac systems, and from one forum someone was able to fix it by downloading new drivers compatible with 64-bit systems (which seem to not be affected by the glitch).  But that leaves us 32-bit people stuck with the current driver which does not work.
The printer is connected with good signal to the wireless router (no matter who's router it is and what configuration is made).  The printer can be pinged from the router and any computer on the network which is not currently being affected by this issue.  However, the affected computer fails pings by either request timed out, or destination host unreachable.  Pings are successful from the affected computer to any other device on the network.  The only way to recover (at least for a few days) is to reboot the affected computer.
Also, from the display on the 7525, the network tests pass without issue.  I can also download and print content from the internet with no issues.
Please do a quick google search of this issue and you will see several THOUSAND entries of people with the same request.  This is a serious issue that people are having and everything is pointing to an HP problem (not routers, improper installation of software or drivers, etc...).  I agree with several other customers that HP should be on the hook for this fix.  I will give it another couple weeks, then back to the store for a reliable unit from another competitor (Canon, Lexmark, etc..)
Thank you in advance for escalating this issue to product engineering,
    S. Hunn

I use my DELL U2410 as my external monitor and I got some banding issues in some of the color. Especially in Blue and Black. It looks very pixelated.
The driver provided by DELL is only for Windows and I tried to look for somehting online to see if there is a driver out there but couldnt find any.
    My display settings are
    Colors: Millions
Refresh Rate: 60 Hertz (NTSC) (I cant change to PAL and I am in europe). Could this be it??
    Option: Overscan is ticked.
    Any idea guys?

  • Banding Issues with GeForce 8800

    Hi,
I just installed CS4 Production Premium on a new Mac Pro. The system specs are:
    2x 3 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    10GB RAM
    NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
    2x 1TB SAS drives
    Samsung 30" Syncmaster 305T Plus
OSX 10.5.6 (both OSX and CS4 are up to date)
When I was working in After Effects, I noticed some dramatic banding issues when lighting a scene. I was curious, so I created a gradient and the same banding was visible. I tried creating a gradient in PS, AI and Flash: same results. Consistent across all CS4 products, and the image depth (8bit, 16bit or 32bit) doesn't affect it at all. Applying a blur effect to any image also produces banding.
I tried finding some gradients through Google image search. They look fine in Firefox, but when I open them in Photoshop the banding once again pops up. Same in Preview to some extent, but not as drastic.
Two other guys in my office are running CS4 with the same monitor. We're running identically calibrated color profiles, and working in the same color space. They have no problems. The only difference between their setup and mine is that they're using Macbook Pros.
Things I have tried: turning OpenGL on/off and toggling the individual GPU settings, working in all available color spaces, working with variable DPI, using another monitor, changing the synchronized color space through Bridge, changing the conversion options (dither, engine, etc), changing the color management policies, working in CMYK/RGB/Gray/Lab, changing the pixel aspect ratio, altering the scratch disks and memory allocation, dumping my CS4 preferences and starting over... none of this affects the banding. A 16bit 72DPI image that's a straight black to white gradient consists of nothing more than 12 or so very visible steps. I'm starting to wonder if this is a graphics card issue.
All the work I'm doing is for screen, so printers don't factor into the equation. I'd appreciate any tips or suggestions anyone can offer.

Well, one thing I notice is that attempting to open the linked .png in Photoshop, it has an embedded "SyncMaster" profile.
Opening it in Photoshop CS4, maintaining that profile, I see banding (although very subtle in the second (bottom) example). The top example exhibits a stippled effect at the band edges at 100% scale.
Opening it and converting it to Adobe RGB 1998, I see almost no sign of banding in that bottom example.
Opening it as is in Preview, I see the banding again.
Creating a new radial gradient in Photoshop CS4, 1300 pixels wide, #666666 to #000000, at 100% scale, it is a smooth transition with the barest hint of banding. Also, my #666666 is noticeably lighter than in your example.
Offhand, I'm not sure which factors affect your workflow. But I doubt it is your video card unless it is set for, say 16 bit or 8 bit...

  • Oracle Apps Database severe Performance Issue

    Hi Gurus,
This is regarding a severe performance issue running in our Production E-Business Suite Instance.
its an R12.1.3 setup installed with 11.2.0.1 Database. All the servers are Solaris Sparc 64 (Solaris 10)
Let me brief you about the instance first:
    2 Node Application
    - Main Application Server hosting web/forms/concurrent/admin servers

    - at peak load, around 1000 concurrent forms session and 2000 web sessions.
We have been facing some serious performance issues and we raised an SR with Oracle Support.
The Support analyzed a bunch of AWR Reports we provided them and they asked us to increase the DB_CACHE from its current usage of 27G to 40G
So, we changed SGA_TARGET from 35G to 50G and PGA was increased from 35G to 40G as v$pgastat was also suggesting some lack of memory.
We made these changes last night.
Today morning we observed the following:
    1. after start of office hours, we checked in the home page of EM DB Console that ADDM was showing reduced impact due to lack of SGA memory which seemed to be a good sign. Earlier it was around 25% which was now at 12%.
    However, negative aspects were:
    1. lot of swapping was reported by the System Administrators on the DB Server
    2. High CPU Usage
    3. EM DB Console showed a lot of "Concurrency Wait Class" events ...throughout the day lot of blocking sessions were reported which were making other sessions to wait.

  • Why my 2 Canon Pixma show a banding issue?

    Hi
since I have an iMac my photos showed a severe banding especially in the sky area. I don't mean it's a Mac problem, but probably the driver I have is not properly optimized. It happened since the beginning (Snow Leopard) and with a Canon Pixma iP4500 and continues now days with Mountain Lion and a new Canon Pixma iP4900 I bought because blamed the 4500 to be arrived at the end of its life.
Of course looked for most recent drivers. I usually do print using Canon Easy Photoprint EX and never had a single problem in Windows environment: always got brilliant results and that's why got a second Canon. Any hint?
    Thanks, Gianfranco

probably the driver I have is not properly optimized.
You could be right, but also check nozzle cleaning (and quality of the whatever ink cartridges you use - could they be drying up from lack of use?).
And of course: is the driver up to date?

  • Sudden banding issue with Mac and new Canon printer, already called tech

    Good morning fellow Elementites.
I have been using Photoshop Elements 12 on my MacBook Pro 13 inch, running Maverick OS, printing to HP Photosmart Premium all-in one with no banding issues, ever.
I did want to upgrade my printer and monitor so I purchased the Canon Pixma Pro 100 and a new external LG IPS monitor to view the PSE program.
I also purchased ColorMunki Display to calibrate the monitor. Everything is operational with the recommended settings for color etc.
I printed a .tiff image and a .jpg through the PSE print function. The images that looked perfect on the new monitor and Macbook monitor printed with banding. I called Canon tech support. The man had me perform a few tasks to make sure the printer was operating correctly. We printed test sheets from the printer and they were all as they should be.
He the said he NEVER prints from PSE. He edits in PSE but prints using Canon's EZ share or print or whatever it's called, doesn't matter cause I do NOT LIKE IT AT ALL. Not to mention it is just another step in the work flow. Not to mention that I paid good money for a photo editing program of high quality and I want to use ALL the features.
He said the problem isn't the printer but the printing software instructions TO the printer via the Mac OS printer system, or something like this is what he said. He also had me download some other updates and driver files. He then had me remove the printer from my printer list and then add it back.
He then had me print the .jpg image, (it only prints .jpg which is annoying as heck,) and it came out SO BEAUTIFUL I ALMOST CRIED
I want to print this quality THROUGH PSE. Does anyone have a clue as to what to do to resolve the issue?  None of the suggestions in other threads from the past seem appropriate enough.
    Eager to hear,
    Regards.

I have returned home and have copied down all the settings so that I may post them here before I do any more fiddling.  Maybe something glaring will be spotted before I start changing things.
I opened an image in PSE 12.
I chose from the PSE menu at the top of the monitor, FILE >PRINT
A window appears with my photo and boxes and such: 1. Select Printer> CANON PRO 100-SERIES (The other printer isn't concern now).
Select Paper Size and Orientation, no problems with this or any of the other settings in this window.
I then select MORE OPTIONS button at bottom of window.
    Another window opens.
There are 3 options listed on the left hand side PRINTING CHOICES which it is automatically on, CUSTOM PRINT SIZE which I haven't needed yet, and COLOR MANAGEMENT.
    I select COLOR MANAGEMENT.
COLOR HANDLING is set to PRINTER MANAGES COLOR.
IMAGE SPACE is listed, not in any box, as sRGB IEC61966-2.1
PRINTER PROFILE is listed in a box that is grayed out and not selectable, as CANON IJ COLOR PRINTE...
RENDERING INTENT is set in a selectable box as RELATIVE COLORMETRIC.
(There is a little mssg below all this that reminds me to remember to enable color management in the printer preferences dialog.  I was never able to find this action and after doing some research I read that this mssg is a boo boo as the function is automatic in MAC running Maverick, supposedly).
I then click OK and the box goes away.
I then click the PAGE SET UP button.
    A window titled PRINT opens.
The Printer selection box says CANON PRO=100 series.
The next box always confuses me because nothing in the list appears to pertain to me when I want to print my photos.  It is the Presets box.
I believe FAST PRINTING ON PLAIN PAPER is always showing when I open this window.  But I don't want that so I always look to see if there is something I should choose that applies.  I don't know what they mean by DEFAULT SETTINGS in this case.  LAST USED SETTINGS would be ok if that was what I wanted each time I printed.  FAST and FINE on Plain Paper?  I have been assuming they mean plain copy paper so I don't choose that.  SAVE CURRENT SETTINGS AS PRESET, I don't choose that because I haven't been sure of the settings.  And the SHOW PRESETS does me no good becuase you can't change anything in there.
PAPER SIZE, not an issue at the moment.
LAYOUT button is my next stop, by now I am exhausted
I look at COLOR MATCHING which shows CANON COLOR MATCHING as the selected method.  (The other choice is COLOR SYNC but I don't know anything about that one and haven't been told to change it.)
PAPER HANDLING & COVER PAGE, N/A at this time.
QUALITY & MEDIUM.  I choose my paper type, paper source, print quality which for my photos I select HIGH.  I don't touch COLOR OPTIONS because that is scary looking.  And BORDER and MARGIN I have no issue with.
I then hit SAVE and the window closes.
Then I select PRINT in the lower right of the window that has my photo in it and from which I acessed all these other things.
Phew.  So, can anyone tell me if they see anything wrong here, PLEASE.
    Regards,
    P.

  • Several unrelated issues

    I have several unrelated issues.
    1) My computer recently started failing to startup. It flashes an image of a globe, and then an image of a finder folder alternated with a questionmark, and then, if I'm lucky, proceeds to normal start up. What is going on? How can I fix this?
    2) My computer has started making noise when it is not doing very much. It makes the noise as if it is busy/overloaded, but it does it even when only one page in safari is open (no other applications are opened).
    3) My computer has been very slow since my installation of VirusBarrier x4. It usually operates at normal speeds, but sometimes (even when virus barrier is not running) it moves slowly and loads pages in safari at an extremely low pace. Also, when sending files/folders through iChat, the transfer is rapid, but when receiving files/folders, it is excruciatingly slow and often fails. Is there any way that I can clear some memory? I definitely have plenty of memory left as this computer was purchased this past summer.
    4) My battery is having trouble charging/staying charged. I have heard that re-calibrating may help, but so far it has proved unsuccessful. The battery often jumps from being very charged to less charged to very charged again without being plugged in nor used very much.
Is anyone having similar issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hello,
Below are some answers/suggestions to help fix your issues:
    1)
    Question:
My computer recently started failing to startup. It flashes an image of a globe, and then an image of a finder folder alternated with a questionmark, and then, if I'm lucky, proceeds to normal start up. What is going on? How can I fix this?
    Answer:
When you start up your PowerBook and see the image of a globe, that means that your Startup Disk is set to "Network Startup" in System Preferences. To stop this from happening, simply open System Preferences and click Startup Disk, then select "Mac OS X, 10.4.5 on Macintosh HD" and restart. The system folder icon with a flashing ? means that the computer is trying to start up, but cannot (When you change the start up disk, the system folder icon with a flashing ? will no longer be seen).
    2)
    Question:
My computer has started making noise when it is not doing very much. It makes the noise as if it is busy/overloaded, but it does it even when only one page in safari is open (no other applications are opened).
    Answer:
Well, it is hard to figure this one out because I would need to know what kind of noise you were hearing (Humming, whine, click, buzz, etc.). If you have a disk in the drive, that could be causing a noise when it is read. Also, do you hear the noise when you are using battery power or connected to the power adapter?
    3)
    Question:
My computer has been very slow since my installation of VirusBarrier x4.
    Answer:
The first thing you can do is trash all of the system caches (Macintosh HD > Library > Caches) and restart. The next thing you can try is to trash all of the caches in your home (Home Folder > Library > Caches), then log out and back in. If both of those do not work, then I would uninstall Virus Barrier x4 and see if that increases speed. If you do uninstall and it makes a difference, then that is what is causing the issue. If it remains the same, state so in your reply.
    4)
    Question:
My battery is having trouble charging/staying charged. I have heard that re-calibrating may help, but so far it has proved unsuccessful. The battery often jumps from being very charged to less charged to very charged again without being plugged in nor used very much.
    Answer:
First of all, have you properly installed Battery Update 1.1? Next, the battery will last longer on a charge if you turn things off such as AirPort and/or Bluetooth. They both use a good portion of the battery when they are in use. Also, try configuring your Energy Saver (System Preferences) differently and see if it helps. Also, the battery will not last forever and I am not sure how much use your PowerBook gets, but but it will eventually need to be replaced.
I am actually not having any of the above issues, but I hope that you get them all fixed. I wish you the best of luck and if you have any questions about anything above, I would be glad to reply back with an answer.

  • Banding issues

    I bought a MacBook Pro 17" a week ago.
I thought this computer was aimed at professionals who require CPU power and precision in what is displaied.
On my MacBook Pro display I have terrible banding issues. I bought this computer to do my work on, but now it seems I'll have to turn it in and buy a PC that will show me exactly what I need to be seeing.
Have any other seen this? (or is this what people refer to as the grain problem?)

This thread still hasn't really established what this banding looks like or when & where it's visible, (unlike the 'Gradients' thread where a graphic was posted with marks indicating where the banding occurs).
LCDtest sets all display pixels to white, red, green, blue & black & is intended AFAIK to help locate stuck pixels. If you see banding while running this, I'd suggest you have a serious hardware issue & should contact Apple for a remedy. Even if you did something such as choosing a printer profile as your monitor profile, it shouldn't cause banding on a display of a single RGB value.
Very uneven screen illumination could be referred to as 'banding' while running LCDtest, though I'd argue that it wasn't banding as much as a continuous tone gradient (which of course shouldn't be there).
These screens are one step closer than any others
were previously to the Cinema displays, especially
    when calibrated with hardware devices.
They are certainly closer in terms of brightness. The screen I have is not as close as any G4 PowerBook I've worked with in terms of viewing angles & evenness of illumination. I hope it's just my screen as I really need a powerful laptop for my work, hopefully I'll get my replacement in January. Until then I remain concerned that Apple have sacrificed viewing angles & even lighting for the sake of brightness...

  • Banding issues using Rgrad

Hey all I'm having banding issues using rgrad, I changed it to 16 bit and float but the banding is still there and noticable, surely thre's a way to create a gradient fall off map without banding, and if so how?
    Rgs,
    -Nic

Yes, or even 6 bits, 90% (or more) of the LCD screens on the market are TN (twisted nematic) based, which is a 6 bit -only- technology. They "simulate" an 8 bit display by dithering.
(Apple's pro monitors are all 8 bit LCD's, as are a handful of professional level LCD screens)

A lot of songs on my Iphone are cutting off several minutes short, and some are just skipping to the next song in the middle of the current song. Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Go to http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ and then click contact iTunes Store Support. Then find your issue in the categories and then it will most likely take you to a page with suggested things to do but also on this page should be an option to e-mail them. Just explain your problem and also have the names of the songs that you are having problems with listed in the e-mail so they can help you more quickly. They usually get back to you within 24 hours.
