Shake / MacPro 2010

is anybody here running Shake 4.1 on a macPro 2010 6-core or 12-core?
I'm planing to buy the 6-core model, but after reading this
http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=12164122&#12164122
I'm a little anxious.

Other's here have reported problems with optical flow on greater than 8 core systems. I think even Motion (that was the beneficiary of Shake's optical flow code), had problems (and a fix). I don't know if anyone had a workaround for Shake's issues...

  • Problems of MacPro 2010 Mixing 2gb & 1gb memory together

Actually my MacPro 2010 12-core was running 8x1gb sticks before.
I just got 4 of 2gb sticks memory from a friend today.
And I do have problem mixing them with the original 1gb sticks.
Only plug 2gb sticks in Slot 1,2,5,6 - No Problem
    When I have 2 x 2gb sticks in Slot 1&2, 2 x 1gb sticks in Slot 5&6 - Still No problem
However, when I have more them 4 sticks installed in the system, no matter when the combination is(sure I'm talking mixing 1&2gb sticks together), the MacPro just don't can't start and keep the front LED flashing.
So I just want to know anything I did wrong? Is that tri-channel can't run with mixing size of memory?
I know that's not good to mixing the memory in MacPro, I just want to know the reason behind(why it doesn't work), any advice?
    p.s. 1gb module 1Rx8, 2gb module 1Rx4 (<- would it be the main reason?)

    thanks for the advice
Both 1 & 2gb sticks are 1333 ECC, the only different thing is "Brand & Size" and "Organization", the original apple 1gb is 1Rx8, and the 2gb is 1Rx4. I heart that different organization mixing together will have a huge chance doesn't work properly, and I guess I'm having this issue right now, haha
I work on CS5 a lot, however 12-core is overkill for everything...I could do anything while I'm rendering the CS5 stuff, so I don't really need more than 16gb RAM to make it faster(for CS5) at this moment, but larger than 8gb should be way better.
The reason I try to mix them up(I know mixing is always fail), is just want to find out if it works or not, if it works, then it should be a bonus, since I can get them with a low price, and if it doesn't work, I can just give it back.
    I just wanna make sure
*those RAM won't hurt my system(if it doesn't work properly with MacPro), and how can I make sure it?
*if I got no choice, I might get 8 sticks of those 2gb(since the price is really cheap) and sell all the 1gb sticks(if those 2gb RAM is no problem)
*Ideal for me is upgrade 4 sticks at a time, like 4x1 & 4x2, then 4x2 4x4, etc.. but I guess this wouldn't work...

  • Windows 7 startup time taking an eternity on MacPro 2010

    Hi All,
I have a MacPro 2010 with the following config:
    - 2 x 6 core 2.97Ghz processors
    - 6GB RAM going to 24 GB RAM as soon as I get a chance to install it
    - 1 SSD for OSX boot, 1 1TB for Windows 7 only, 2 x 2TB for striped raid (OSX use)
    - ATI 5870 (centre screen) and a GT120 (left and right screens)
I went through the motions of starting bootcamp assistant, selecting the drive and then inserting the windows media and then waited for the windows install gui to start. This took a long time 1hr+. I just went and did something else so I didnt think about it much. Once Windows installed and the machine rebooted it took a while for the little windows logo animation above "starting windows" to come up eg 5 minutes. Again did something else and didnt think much of it. Now once windows was started (surprised to see all three monitors come up with 2 different video cards...ATI and NVIDIA, bonus!) it worked ok and sooner or later got a blue screen of death. The machine reboots and I get to bootup options ie the your machine crashed do you want safe mode, etc, or in 30 seconds the default will be started...blah blah.....now the machine has my full attention and I am looking at how long things take to start. The 30 second countdown on the boot options screen took about 16 minutes to get to zero ie every second took ~30 seconds to decrease on the display. So once windows (I assume around the point where the windows logo does its thing over the "starting windows" bit) takes over in its boot sequence things are quicker but during initial boot there is a massive lag somewhere. Is this normal for 2010 macpro and Win7?
Once in Win7 the Win Exp Index = 7.8 for everything bar disk which is 5.9 and thats with a raw install etc etc. So ok.
    Thanks
    Jim

    Stefan,
So to set the scene, my MacPro is situated about 4-5 meters from my sitting position. Therefore I have 7mtr monitor cables and some USB devices in front of me..... anyway you get the picture Im sure.
What was causing it were two generic USB extender cables (they have a box with circuitry on the end that boosts the signal for longer USB runs). They were giving me problems with the devices I tried to use (unreliable) so I simply stopped using them with USB devices a while back but never unplugged them from the Mac. I did however add another brand extender cable and used it without issue for many years. When I put the new mac in I simply reconnected everything not giving it any thought.
So anyway, I have removed the two culprits from the mac left the better extender cable (plus other USB devices) there and its all fixed. For the record I did add them back on just to be sure and it is definitely them.
I must admit I still cant figure out why one of those cables would slow a boot option page counter by 30 times, a power drain issue maybe?????

  • Samsung 850 Pro 1TB in MacPro 2010 ..?

    Hi,
I am thinking of placing a Samsung 850 Pro 1TB SSD in a MacPro 2010.
On it i will install 10.10.
It will replace my current mechanical system HD
    A few questions:
    - Is this possible at all and do i have to have special additional equipment to place it ?
    - Is it true that it will run 3xsata and not 6x sata ?
    - Can you recommend this ? in term of speed and TRIM and/or other issues ?
    - Would PCIe based SSD be possible also in a MacPro ?
    Hope 2 hear from you,
    Rob.

CD drawer won't stay closed. MacPro 2010. OS 10.8.2
I restarted with the drawer closed (before it opened again) and the drawer did not open after restart. I reopened drawer and again, it will not stay closed.
    Any ideas?

Many thanks for your reply. I don't know what I did last nite. I pushed in the drawer and restarted at least twice. Eventually it stayed in. I put in a CD and burned it using Roxio Toast and all went well.
I have not tried to burn another this AM..
Thanks again. Trial & error, esp. error!

Unfortnately you cannot. Thunderbolt is an onboard chip that will require an updated Mac Pro. It is not a graphics card upgrade, but a full logicboard upgrade.
Apple has not updated the Mac Pro in 580 days - as of this post. Hopefully one is right around the corner...but I've been hoping for that for over a year.

  • I purchased a MacPro 2010 and is having trouble to add HP LaserJet 1022n to my printer list.

    Dear Administrator,
I purchased a Mac Pro 2010.  I migrated from my MacBook Pro to Mac Pro.  Then, the HP LaserJet 1022n won't print.  I reseted printing system and now can't add that printer to my printer list.  Software Update have installed HP Printer Driver v. 2.16.1 on my system.  The printer is actually available in HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 update.  But, no matter how I do it, it always complained that the Driver software is currently unavailable and ask me to install it later.  I have downloaded the HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 update manually, but it won't install and showed my Macintosh HD as not a valid install target.  I tried to install the driver CD that came with the printer, but it complained that a newer version of the driver has been installed on the SSD hard drive.  Please help.
My guess is that the HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 update is on the system but is corrupt, that is why the Add Printer command can't simply pick up the driver on the computer.  Other method also break down since they think I already have the driver installed.  I think that I needed to uninstall the HP Printer Driver 1.1.1 update to correct the system.  That is just my hunch.
Please advice.  Thank you very much for your time and effort in this matter.
    Sincerely yours,
    Zigang
    Ph.D.

Have you tried un-installing the original (complete) software and re-installing it?
Usually that does the trick. After that you can try the update if necessary.

  • Recommended extension cable for Apple LED 27" to MacPro 2010?

Okay, from what I have read the cable on the 27" LED display is a bit short. I need to travel at least 5 feet from the desktop to where the computer sits. What do you recommend as an extension cable to help bridge the gap?
A while back they suggested this:
    http://www.cpustuff.com/mini-displayport-male-to-mini-displayport-female-extensi on-cable.html
    Any other choices?

Yup! I'm using 10.6.5 and see no problem with the cables.
I've always assumed that if audio can come through a mDP of the card then it was a physical property of the cables themselves (e.g., appropriate additional connector pins and the connections to them) that determined whether they could carry that audio signal. In other words I don't see what difference the OS version has to do with it. If audio isn't coming out of the mDP from one update to the next then some configuration data (maybe what's in the sound system preference) has changed and audio shouldn't come out even if no extension cables are used.
Also, I don't think any (pkg) installer, including system installers, are capable of updating the firmware in the video card.
One thing I might suggest is resetting the SMC (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964). Sometimes that can "shake free" some of these sound "quirks"

  • NVidia Quadro CX and MacPro 2010

I am trying to run this card on my MacPro. According to Adobe, this card is compatible, however there are no Drivers on NVidia's website.  When I installed the card, I'm getting no image from the display ports. The NVidia card only has one PCI-e 6pin connector while the ATI has two, Is that an issue? I've reseated the card several times. I'm just not sure if it's a bad card or if I need to try something else. Any ideas?

Well it is still qualified to work right? I just want to make sure there isn't a step i'm missing in the installation process.

  • MacPro 2010 Unibody constant kernel panic. HELP

I have tried everything to try to fix my constant crashes. I noticed the problem when I installed Mavericks and more frequently when i fresh-installed Yosemite. I have an SSD and installed new ram sticks which I don't think can cause the problem. I know that there is a defect in these models and that the source is the GPU but does anyone have a solution? I don't want to shell out hundreds of dollars to pay for something that is a manufacture's fault; I think we all paid enough for the laptop itself.
Here are the things I have tried:
    1) Installed gFxCardStatus (to no avail)
    2) Wiped my hard drive clean
    3) Installed Yosemite (which apparently only made it worse)
    Here is the panic report:

  • SSHD on 2010 MacPro

Using MacPro 2010, Mavericks up to date, 27" Apple screen
Three weeks ago, interested by the performances of Seagate Desktop SSHD 2000GB, I installed one of them in place of 2TB "classic" HD,
Immediately, performaces of the Mac where much better, but, since about 2 weeks, progressively, I've been facing to several little dysfunctions: softwares, cameras, mails, impossibility to shutdown Mac, ..... it was really a mess to work with it !
After several tests, I came back this morning to my 2TB prévious HD and everythings went allright immediately !
For the time being, I'm unable to allocate the problems to the Mac system, or Seagate SSHD, or ........
So I'm interested to know if some other people have got the same problems ?
Effectiveley, it should be a contextual problem with my materials (Hards and softs)
    Or simply a defective disk...
    Thanks !

Wading through this review of your drive, performance on things like booting should be noticeably improved and some other things should be snappy too, which is what you've found. However, given the very small SS portion of the drive, it just can't compete with a true SSD in terms of overall speed. But it should continue to work, albeit like a regular HD, which it sounds like it's not doing.
Unless you've installed something in those 2 weeks which is not on your HD that could be causing the problems, I'd suggest checking the SMART status in Disk Utility to see if it's failing. Even if it's not, see if Seagate will honor its warranty and provide a replacement. Just be sure to wipe it clean first.
But if you're looking for reliably improved performance, The hatter's advice will get you there.

  • 2010 12Core MacPro not booting Win Installer

I am trying to install Win7 Home Premium 64Bit on my MacPro (2010, 12 Core, ATI 5870). I assigned an internal hdd to windows and the bootcamp assistant is booting the machine from the Win7 DVD. I can see the typical PC bios white-on-black text, when it's trying to find SCSI devices on the Atto SCSI controller, when it's finished with the Atto the sreen gets filled with garbled colored blocks and nothing happens.
What can I do? I don't even know what to google/search for. Had Vista istalled on my previous MacPro without problems, but this eludes me.
    help appreciated.
    Florian

you don't need BCA to install Windows 7 on its own hard drive.
But, is the ATTO flashed for mac firmware or Windows? and is the drive on the ATTO or not?
Might need to install Windows on native SATA ports - unless of course you are using SAS or SCSI drive for Windows.
You do NOT want Home Prem. but Pro in order to use two processor sockets and more than 16GB RAM.

  • Macpro raid card(Battery is Missing)

    MacPro 2010
I bought a raid card a month ago.
But I got a message "But Battery is missing".
    My Raid Card is Corrupt?
Could you teach me the reason?

    google translate says:
My macpro 2010 have the same problem, replace the battery to repair the same problem after the new battery Month 3 Months generated.

  • MacPro - AJA, Blackmagic...?

We will soon be upgrading our MacPro, replacing an old AJA LHe. Although we are looking into the LHe Plus I wondered if anyone else is having sucess with a third party card and Premiere CS6 specifically?
All we need the card for is monitoring to an FSI HD monitor and for colour correction. Deck control would be needed only for ocassionally digitizing some of our archive footage from Betacam, DVCAM, etc.
MacPro 2010, 12 gig ram, Nvidia 4000, eSATA RAID, will be upgrading to Mountain Lion

I just don't have that hardware to test with, myself.

  • Booting from USB 3 on a Mac Pro 2010

Two issues:  I've been looking for a USB 3 Card for Mac pro without much luck.  Therefore, any suggestions for a good, reliable card would be much appreciated.  One piece of information I came across is that apparently USB 3 does not support booting from an external drive(Clone), but not sure if this pertains to a MacPro 2010.  Can anyone verify this information?  I assume eSATA does support an external bootable drive, but I may be wrong on that.  Again, any info would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Gary

I have the CalDigit USB3/eSATA card in my 2010 Mac Pro. It works well; however, drives attached to it are no more immune than any other external drives to the Improper Disk Ejection bug that occurs with Mountain Lion, Mavericks and Yosemite in the process of sleeping/waking from sleep. Apple is apparently never going to fix this. In Snow Leopard, any drive attached to the CalDigit card behaves perfectly. I have never tried booting from the eSATA interface.
BTW there is a CalDigit FASTA-6GU3 USB3 eSATA card on eBay right now:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/201264131915?_trksid=p2060778.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STR K%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
I didn't see any mention of which card it is. The first version works with OS 10.5 and newer; the second-generation card requires 10.8.2 or newer.
I have experimented with the Mountain utility on my Yosemite test drive, and with Mountain running, the improper ejection problem has so far not occurred. But I spend little time in Yosemite, so I am not 100% positive that Mountain has solved the problem.
