Share a virtual volume

Hello everybody. I've got a My Cl.oud EX2. I attached an iSCSI volume to a Win7 initiator. It's way faster than the samba share. After including it in a virtual volume, it got a share label and it shows up in the windows network as well. Unfortunately, it does not show up in the WD cloud. Is it somehow possible to share it in the private cloud and make the contents subject to streaming and sharing? Regards, ALexander.

Hi there, welcome to the community.
Let me see if I understand, you want to allow access from an ISCSI target via remote access?

  • RAID Virtual Volumes Server 2008 R2 (Dell H200)

    Hi all,
I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
I am deploying a Dell R410 server with a Dell PERC H200 Controller with 4 X 300GB SAS Drives in two RAID1 arrays. I have loaded Server 2008 R2 onto the first volume. Unfortunately when I open Disc Manager the second volume is not displayed at all. However in
"Dell's Open Manage Server Administrator" both Virtual disks are displayed, also while posting after the controller has initialized both arrays show up. I attempted to remove the disks in the functional array and booting with the Installation media, to my
dismay the second volume could not be detected by the Windows setup which leads me to believe it is Hardware related.
I have contacted dell support today and according to them it is OS related, unfortunately the channel I purchased the server through did not have stock of the Dell OEM Server Standard 2008 R2, thus I was forced to acquire the package via a DSP channel and as
such I am not entitled to Dell Support on the Software (won’t make that mistake again...). However the representative I spoke too did make the effort to consult the Software support team and they informed him that this is a known issue and referred me
    to the following article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457110.aspx
Now I am either thick and can’t read or these support guys have it wrong. This article is about basic usage of Disk manager however it has no information on a virtual volume not showing up in Disc Manager... So I can only conclude that they believe I
am an idiot and cannot use Disk Manager to initialize the disk, even though I made it clear that there is no volume to initialize in the first place.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I am going out of town for a day or two and will only be able to check back on Monday, so if any feedback is required from me I will reply ASAP.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Regards
    Thick sculled Disk Manager user.

I had this problem to the point and I have resolved it.  The Dell support rep stated that the PERC H200 drive was designed for "Dell" proprietary drives only and that they have released a firmware version in May or June of 2011 that resolves this:
    Component              Version                  Previous Version
    Package               07.02.42.00               07.01.33.00
    MPT Firmware       02.15.04.00                02.15.63.00
    SASBIOS                7.11.01.00                7.01.09.00
    SASFLASH               7.00.00.00               2.00.00.01
    UEFI BSD                7.00.01.00               2.00.01.09
    NVDATA                  version 17                00.0A.00.15
Make sure the firmware version is the updated version.
Also, there is an updated driver for Server 2008 R2 that is different than the driver for Server 2008 x64 or x32.  Make sure that it is the following version:
    FILE NAME: R294479
Device Driver for Windows Server 2008 R2 x64
    Version 2.0.35.10
There are README's included that give full instructions for Windows Installation.
With these two components, your drives will be recognized by Server 2008 R2.  I hope this helps you or anyone else with this problem.

  • Is it possible to share a whole volume on my Mac to a PC?

    Here's the situation:
I primarily use my Mac in my bedroom and sometimes use the PC in the lounge room. They're connected to each other via Ethernet and I've managed to network them at the most basic of levels.
I can log into my Mac from the PC, but can only see my User folder. And I can log into the PC from my Mac, but can't see any files at all. It's a weird situation. I was wondering though, is it possible to share a whole volume/partition on my Mac (not only my User folder) with the PC? I've tried playing around with the ownership and permissions in the Get Info pane of the volume with no success.

Try something like Sharepoints its freeware , should be able to share your whole HD out then.
    Get it here ...

  • How to share a virtual network among different subscription?

    Team A(Subscription A)

      Virtual PC : Some PC(ex. 192.168.0.5, 192.168.0.6))
In my understanding, Subscription A can create Virtual PCs on VNET1. But Subscription B can not create Virtual PCs on VNET1 by default.
How can "Subscription B" choose another subscription's Virtual network?

    Hi Munyamunya,
Currently, it is not possible to share the VNet between different Subscriptions and create a VM over it.
You can just move the vm between VNets in the same subscription :

  • Need To Share XP Virtual machine on Macbook Pro in Fusion

I have an XP Virtual machine that I need to share on our Macbook Pro. The problem is that even if I create it in shared folders, I can't share it with anyone but the user who created it. I've discovered that when I check the permssions, there is a "ghost" user called "Staff" and I can't change any of the permissions for "Staff".
I would appreciate any assistance that anyone can provide. As I'm in the early stages of building the VM, I can delete and recreate if necessary.

    Vincentjuhhh wrote:
How much RAM do I need to run a virtual machine and also have a fast macbook pro that opens applications in 1 second?
That's like asking how many horsepower you need to go from 0-60 in under 6 seconds.  If the vehicle you're driving (the virtual machine) is a Mack Truck pulling 15 Tons of steel, you need quite a few more horses than if you're talking about a F1 race car with a carbon fiber body.
This isn't a question that can be answered based on the information you've provided.
Reduce the resources allocated to the VM and see if performance of your Mac apps improves to an acceptable level.
Given the price of RAM these days, there's virtually no reason not to increase the amount of RAM you have to the maximum your computer will support.

  • How do I redirect shares to cloned volume?

This is likely very simple, but I don't see an option in Server.app to redirect shares to a new location.  I cloned our drive that hosts all of our shares.  I simply want to point all of our shares to the new volume.
I tried simply ejecting the old volume and renaming the new one to the same name as the old one.  Though that didn't work.  When I go to the edit menu for any of the shared folders, there's no place for me to redirect it to the new volume.
I hope I don't have to do this per share.  It'd be nice to select all shares and point them to the new volume in one shot.
Mac Mini Server (Mountain Lion Server)

You can do this by editing the raw record.  To do this:
    1:  Launch Server.app
2:  From the Tools menu choose Directory Utility
3:  When Directory Utility opens, select the Directory Editor tab from the top menu bar
4:  Set the Node to /Local/Default and then change Viewing to SharePoints
5:  Click the padlock and use the local admin's user name and password to unlock the node for editing
6:  Select the share(s) that you need to edit and look for the directory_path key
7:  Update this value of this key to reflect the new path to the share.  Remember, if the share was /SharePoints/Share1 and you moved it to a new volume, you will need to do the full volumes path, /Volumes/newDrive/SharePoints/Share1
8:  When you are done, press the Save button.
Oh, it is best to do this when File Sharing is turned off.  When finished, turn on File Sharing and your shares are reset to a new path.  Please note, if you did not maintain ACLs on the move or relocation, you may need confirm the permissions on the parent folder and propagate permissions.
    Enjoy

  • Can I share an entire volume (User Account) on my Powerbook with another?

I have an iBook running Tiger and two Powerbooks G4 running 10.3.9 and would like to share my user account with the two Powerbooks on an airport network. All I see however is the public folder when I access the iBook from either of the Powerbooks.
    Is this possible

  • Share entire volume only for system user

I'd like to set up a sharepoint for the entire boot volume of my server, but make it only visible to the system administrator.  I have other dirs on the same volume which are currently setup as sharepoints for certain groups of users.  Can I do this (share the boot volume) and make it visible only to the system admin while maintaining the subdirs for groups?

At least for me on 10.6, I can loging to the server over AFP, using my credentials from my local admin account on the server.  When using those credentials, I can see all the volumes on the server (root level).  I have the same access as if I were sitting at the server.  I can't navigate down into folders that are owned by other users (a user's home folder contents), but then again, I can't do that when sitting at the server either (without using sudo).

  • Share network volume

I am trying to share a network volume that I have mounted with other computers on the network.
My server is connected via fibre channel card to a Avid LanShare system (which runs on Windows 2000) when I connect to the server via their software a network drive appears on the OS X Server desktop.
I can't see this volume in the Workgroup Manger.
How do I share this volume.
I am limited to the number of fibre connections (also the expense) of connecting to the LanShare and this is for clients that need some access but not the bandwidth of realtime video
    Thanks
    ayoung

You can share firewire. I have never tried USB though. I can't imagine it would be any different than Firewire... A volume is a volume in most cases.
A shared volume is different, however. You cannot re-share a volume (answer to the original post) that is being shared to your server. It has to be a volume that is directly connected to your server. This includes, an XServe RAID connected via Fibre Channel directly to your server.
If you have a RAID box connected directly to your network via Fibre Channel, you will need to use XSan to manage it. WorkGroupManager is only for local volumes.
    I hope this helps.

  • (Request for:) Best practices for setting up a new Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V Virtualized AD DC

Could you please share your best practices for setting up a new Windows Server 2012 r2 Hyper-V Virtualized AD DC, that will be running on a new WinSrv 2012 r2 host server.   (This
will be for a brand new network setup, new forest, domain, etc.)
    Specifically, your best practices regarding:
the sizing of non virtual and virtual volumes/partitions/drives,
the use of sysvol, logs, & data volumes/drives on hosts & guests,
RAID levels for the host and the guest(s),
IDE vs SCSI and drivers both non virtual and virtual and the booting there of,
disk caching settings on both host and guests.
Thanks so much for any information you can share.

A bit of non essential additional info:
We are small to midrange school district who, after close to 20 years on Novell networks, have decided to design and create a new Microsoft network and migrate all of our data and services
over to the new infrastructure .   We are planning on rolling out 2012 r2 servers with as much Hyper-v virtualization as possible.
During the last few weeks we have been able to find most of the information we need to undergo this project, and most of the information was pretty solid with little ambiguity, except for
information regarding virtualizing the DCs, which as been a bit inconsistent.
Yes, we have read all the documents that most of these posts tend point to, but found some, if not most are still are referring to performing this under Srvr 2008 r2, and haven’t really
seen all that much on Srvr2012 r2.
We have read these and others:

  • Storage Spaces: Virtual Disk taken offline during file copy, marked as "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity", but plenty of free space

Server 2012 RC. I'm using Storage Spaces, with two virtual disks across 23 underlying physical disks.
    * First virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across 23 physical disks: 10,024GB capacity
    * Second virtual disk is fixed provisioning, parity across the remaining space on 6 of the same physical disks: 652GB capacity
These have been configured as dynamic disks, with an NTFS volume spanned across the two (larger virtual disk first). Total volume size 10,676GB. For more details of the hardware, and why the configuration is like this, see: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/winserver8gen/thread/c35ff156-01a8-456a-9190-04c7bcfc048e
I'm copying several TB from a network share to this volume. It is very slow at ~12MB/sec, but works. However, three times so far, several hours in to the file copy and with plenty of free space remaining, the 10,024GB virtual disk is suddenly taken offline.
This obviously then fails the spanned volume and stops the file copy.
The second time, I took screenshots, below. The disk (Disk27) is marked offline due to "This disk is offline because it is out of capacity". And the disk in the spanned volume is marked as missing (which is what you would expect when one of its member disks
    is offline).
I can then mark the disk (Disk27) back online again, and this restores the spanned volume. I can then re-start the file copy from where it failed. There doesn't appear to be any data loss, but it does cause an outage that requires manual attention. As you
can see, there is plenty of space left on the spanned volume.
Each time this has happened, there are a few event 150 errors in the System event log: "Disk 27 has reached a logical block provisioning permanent resource exhaustion condition.". Source: Disk.

This error seems to be related to thin provisioning of disks. I found this:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/desktop/hh848068(v=vs.85).aspx. But both these Virtual Disks are configured as Fixed, not Thin provisioning, so it shouldn't apply.
My thoughts: the virtual disk should not spuriously go offline during a file copy, even if it was out of space. And in any case, there is plenty of free space remaining. Also, I don't understand the reason for why it is marked as offline ("This disk is offline
because it is out of capacity"). Why would a disk go offline because it was out of thin capacity, rather than just returning an "out of disk space" error while keeping it online.

Interesting Thread, I've been having the same issue. I had a failed hardware RAID that was impossible to recover in place, so after being forced to do a 1:1 backup, I find myself with 5 2TB hard drives to play with. Storage Spaces seemed like an interesting
way to go until I started facing the issues we share.
So my configuration is A VM Running Windows Server 2012 RC with 5 Virtualized Physical drives using a SCSI interface, 2TB in size that make up my storage pool. A Single Thinly provisioned Disk of 18 TB (using 1 disk for parity)
Interestly enough, write speed has not been an issue on this machine (30~70MB/s, up from 256k on the beta)
Of note to me is this error in my event log 13 minutes before the drive disappeared:
"The shadow copies of volume E: were deleted because the shadow copy storage could not grow in time.Consider reducing the IO load on the system or choose a shadow copy storage volume that is not being shadow copied."Source: volsnap, Event ID: 25, Level: Error
    followed by:
"The system failed to flush data to the transaction log. Corruption may occur in VolumeId: E:, DeviceName: \Device\HarddiskVolume17.(The physical resources of  this disk have been exhausted.)"Source: Ntfs (Microsoft-Windows-Ntfs), Event ID: 140, Level: Warning
I figure the amount of space available to me before I start encountering physical limits is in the vicinity of about 7TB. It dropped out for the second time at 184 GB.
FYI, the number of columns created for me is 5

  • Space on boot volume keeps disappearing - crisis

One of my customers has a Mac Pro running OSX Server 10.4.9. It was installed last October and was running fine until a few days ago. It's running afp, firewall, nat, dhcp, dns, mail, print, web (for webmail) and windows services.
The only non-Apple things running on the machine are Now Contact/Up To Date server, Timbuktu and Retrospect. I have the same combination running on the same model hardware elsewhere without problems.
The boot volume had about 85gb free and mail has its own dedicated volume. The boot volume is not shared or used by anyone.
Then I had a call from the customer saying mail wouldn't send out. When I looked at the machine, the problem was that there was exactly 0 bytes available on the boot volume and postfix couldn't find queuing space.
I deleted all the rubbish - dmg files from various installs, other files 'parked' on the dekstop etc. and got back about 8Gb. I made a note to look at the machine on my next visit and thought that was it.
The 8Gb disappeared within a couple of hours. This time I looked a bit harder (partly because there wasn't any rubbish left to delete). Naturally, there were no files visible to finder that would account for the space used. My frantic but fairly superficial spin through ls -l in a terminal didn't show me any 'new' folders I didn't recognise. Looking at Activity Monitor, I saw that there was almost constant disk write activity going on, even though the users were apparently 'hands off' their machines. The only process using any cpu time was the Now Contact event server - so I pounced on it, thinking it was bound to be the culprit, being a buggy piece of software at the best of times. When I killed the process, the disk writing stopped.
I got on the phone to Now Software and they told me every place they THOUGHT the program wrote to - nothing. I restarted the machine and made sure the Now Software stuff wasn't running. Everything seemed stable, except I still hadn't figured out where the lost space was. However, it started again the next night.
Over the past few days I've been fightng a running battle to keep space above zero. I've now deleted everything in applications, utilities, library etc that I can live without and I've even gone as far as clearing every log file, but the space keeps disappearing. I'm now down to 150Mb and there's nothing left to delete so I have to find out where it's all really going to.
I have done a file search on all the usual combinations - visible/inivisible, created/modified/bigger than/smaller than etc but nothing stands out.
Is the server being attacked? I've shut down windows and web, and SSH was always switched off. I've been watching system.log without seeing anything obvious happening. The server has been restarted many times so it's not a virtual memory thing (I think).
I'm depsarate. Where should I be looking?
    Justin

Good grief. First of all, thank you very mich for introducing me to du.
Here's what I I learned (and it's obviously an accident since no-one on site would know how to do this deliberately):
There is a volume (a real hard drive) called Archive. It's got about 90-something Gb of stuff on it. There are also three other volumes but here's the thing about Archive. I failed to notice in my earlier quick scan that /volumes contains an item called 'Archive' AND an item called 'Archive 1' - each being about the same size. When, in the finder, I deleted a folder from Archive that they could live without, it was Archive 1 that got smaller as seen by du.
going cd /volumes/archive shows me just one folder (which doesn't exist on the real volume but did once).
going cd '/volumes/archive 1' shows me what appears to be all the folders that are supposed to be there (on Archive). I haven't trawled right through and done an entry-by-entry check.
On impulse, I've just loaded Workgroup Manager and looked at Sharing. Under 'All', the left hand pane shows the volumes I'd expect to see (and nothing else). Buuuuuuttttt....... under 'Share Points', the volume we know as Archive is called 'Archive 1' - with a custom afp name of 'Archive'.
What have they done? I don't know what to delete at this point; and the trouble is that I suspended backups last week (because the catalogue files were amongst the things I removed to get some space back). I'll have to do a manual backup of Archive, verify it, and then try deleting something and see what happens.
What I'd really like to know is what happened and how. For example, would anyone like to try and build a hypothesis whereby the server was brought up with Archive off-line, then, after some other event, Archive subsequently came on line? Is this how you might end up with two apparent volumes with the same name?

  • "virtual drive" on mac?

I have a RAID and XSAN 1.2, and I want to create a "virtual volume" similar to using the MOUNT command in Windows, where a volume (aka "drive letter" in Windows) actually points to a folder within a real volume.
I've been looking into Symbolic Links and /etc/fstab.
But it's all new to me and I don't want to mess things up, esp with XSAN and all.
Can anyone explain how I might use one of these methods to make a folder within one of the volumes on the RAID appear on the desktop/finder as an actual volume?
I was thinking to create a symbolic link within the /volumes folder which points to the "destination" folder. Let's say one of the RAID volumes is called "Media", which has a folder called "A" at the root, and a folder called "B" within "A" ... can I create a symbolic link in /volumes like this:
    cd /Volumes
    ln -s /Volumes/Media/A/B/ VolumeB
I would hope this would make the Finder "see" a new volume called "VolumeB", which would actually reside within "Media". But is this dangerous?
Or is there a way to do it in the fstab file?
I would like my virtual volume to appear on the desktop/finder, specifically to be visible to Avid as another usable volume. And I want this volume to only appear on the machine where I set it up; that is, I don't want it to appear to any other machines connected to the RAID.
I am completely new to Unix/terminal, so any guidance is greatly appreciated. (Assume I'm an idiot!)
    thanks!

I have found a solution, but I am hoping there's a more elegant way to do it.
I installed SharePoints on each machine; then set up a unique share on each machine, with SMB access, so that each machine had a share to its own private folder on the RAID; then enabled Windows Sharing. Then I mount the so-called remote share through the same machine, by doing Connect to SMB://thismachine. The "share" appears as a network volume, even though the machine is sharing "with itself."
As far as I know, SharePoints is just a GUI front-end to simplify doing certain things that can be done with more expert knowledge of OSX/Unix. So is there a way to do this without SharePoints?
And is there a way to do it without "faking" as a share through SMB? I just wonder if that will reduce performance/bandwidth from the RAID.
I suspect there is a way to get that "network volume" to appear without going through "loops." To somehow get that mountpoint (?) to bind directly...
The AUTOMOUNT command looked promising, but my Unix isn't good enough to make sense of the jargon in the manual.
A friend said on Linux you use something with "--bind", but that doesn't work on OSX-flavor Unix.
P.S. to Don: Yes, to all your questions. You got it. And yes, the file in X appears in the corresponding directory. X is just a volume that points to a folder within an actual volume, where that folder is the "root" of X.

  • Xsan right for this? Pooling the drives in multiple towers into one volume

I have a possibly wacky idea to install secondary hard disks in each of our several towers and somehow pool them all together into a single virtual volume that all the servers could mount.
Each server would have its own set of files for which it would be the primary server, as with an affinity. But all of the servers in the cluster would be able to see all the files of all the other servers, as if they were all sharing a big xserve raid.
The advantages would include making use of the equipment we have and compartmentalizing potential failures.
The alternative would be to mount all the shared volumes of all the servers on all the other servers, which is difficult to manage.
Is this something Xsan would be good for?
    G5's   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

It's for web hosting. We already have the cluster in place and operational for apache and our applications.
Yes, I'm trying to optimize server resources -- but I'm referring to storage resources, not computing.
Consider a number of servers. They're all configured identically as far as the web hosting is concerned, so any of them can respond to requests for any site.
As far as files are concerned, however, each server has the static files (photos, images) and scripts for only a handful of sites. Server A has all the photos for web site X, Y, and Z. Server B has all the photos for web site T, U, and V. And so on.
Right now, for all the servers to have access to all of these files, I have to mount a share from each server onto each server. In other words, Server A has servers B, C, and D mounted. Server B has A, C, and D mounted. Etc.
What I'd like to do is put all of the files that all servers need onto one virtual volume. That way each server only has one volume to mount. Also, I can add and remove storage to the virtual volume as needed.
My question is, could Xsan bundle together internal hard drives from individual servers into one virtual volume? It would be like having an Xraid, except each drive is in a different tower.
I could tie together all the secondary internal drives from all the G5's into what I would think would appear to Xsan to be a JBOD box.
But the XYZ files would stay on Server A, and the TUV files would stay on Server B, thanks to an affinity set to that effect. But all the files for all the sites would appear and be available to all the other servers through the same single virtual volume.
Does that make a little better sense?
It's not so much for the sake of load balancing at the file level. It's more a matter of convenience and availability. If server B goes down, only sites TUV would be affected, you see, while all the other sites continue operating.
I guess I'm envisioning more of a collaborate approach among the towers, rather than putting all the eggs in one Xraid basket.

  • How do I clone my boot volume to a new internal hard drive?

    Hi,
I record HD shows from my digital antenna using EyeTV 500, not to mention producing DVDs from my 8mm and miniDV home movies. I seem to be eating up disk space at an alarming rate.
Does anyone have a general solution to storing large amounts of video?
    My current setup is:
    Original Internal HDD--250GB Maxtor "6Y250M0"
    Second Internal HDD--500GB Maxtor "6H500F0"
External Firewire HDD--1 TB LaCie Big Disk Extreme "LUN 0"
I've just bought a new Hitachi 1TB DeskStar SATA Drive (for the amazing price of $359 after a $30 rebate at OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Hitachi/OBD0A34915/). I plan to remove the original 250 GB drive and install the new Hitachi 1TB drive in that bay.
My preference would be to make the Maxtor 500GB drive my new OS and Applications drive and the new 1TB internal drive my primary media drive. I should have room to clone the original 250GB drive to the second internal Maxtor 500GB drive, then swap out the 250GB drive for the new drive.
The System folder is only 1.64 GB, the Library Folder is 11.9 GB, and the Applications Folder is 7.09 GB. The Current boot drive (250GB) has a capacity of 233 GB, with 139.09 GB used and 94.65 GB available.
The specific questions I have are:
    1) If I clone the current boot drive (250GB) to the 500GB Maxtor Drive, do I have to clone it to a partition the same size as the original (250GB), or, when I Restore using disk utility, will it just become a 500 GB volume?
    2) Is it better to put the System, Apps, and Library in their own Partition, as opposed to having them share the same volume with a lot of other files?
    2) ...if so, how do I calculate how big a partition I'll need for the system and apps on the Maxtor 500 GB drive?
    3) What's the best way to do all this? What pitfalls do I need to watch out for?
    4) I plan on upgrading to OS 10.5 (Leopard) when it comes out next month. (Does this change anything?)
    Thanks!
    Ashwin

The very best way to clone one drive to another on a Mac, is to use a simple utility called Carbon Copy Cloner. It is available online, free as a download. Just google for Carbon Copy Cloner, download it (2.2 mb), and use it. It is really great and you will be happy with it.

  • 27" iMac won't boot from anything BUT the main drive

Hi all, My lovely 27" iMac is in perfect working condition, but I thought I'd try to install a OS on a large SD card to see if I would gain any speed. In the process of doing that (cause I never got that far) I discover that the iMac won't boot from
