Shared Itunes Files, Windows 7

I have installed iTunes on my Windows 7 PC (I will call it A).
All the source music files are on a disk M: local to my PC
The iTunes folders are on a disk I: local to my PC.
Both disks are shared with everyone (r/w) and also in the music library (also in homegroup)
Can I install iTunes on different PCs, and have them access the iTunes folder on my (A PC). Will the other PCs have access through iTunes to the music that is in the iTunes folders?

If you set up windows sharing correctly, you can get this to work.
However, only ONE computer can have the itunes database file open at one time.
iTunes Library.itl
That's the file that holds ratings, play lists, play counts, etc.
If you want 3 PC to share one database file you need to buy something like TuneRanger that says it can do this. Although I have not tried it.

  • Can't Play Shared ITunes Files On Ipod Only

Ok, I've looked at all the shared files posts, but couldn't find this scenario. I've also looked at the how-to shared threads.
My fiance and I are running two Ipods (one 30G Video and a 4G Mini) on one PC w/ Win XP under 2 different profiles and two different ITunes Accts. I've enabled sharing under both profiles.
Our music is not in the shared folder and we can add files to each others ITunes Manually, and that is fine. (we didn't want them together)
She can add actual ACC files that I downloaded from ITunes and play them on her Ipod, no problem.
BUT, i can add her song to my playlist and can play those ACC files fine through ITunes, but they just won't play on my Ipod, any ideas? It just skips over them... I don't even get a message for authorization...
Anything else I download from her ITunes playlist (like cd, mp3 and limewire files) all work fine and play on my Ipod, just not the ITunes files she downloaded and purchased...
Any ideas, this is driving me nuts...

Try deauthorizing both of the accounts (from the Store menu in iTunes). Then Restore the iPod, and re-authorize both accounts in iTunes. Then make sure you can play songs from both accounts in iTunes, hook up the iPod and sync them over.

  • Shared itunes files

Is there any way possible to use audio files from shared itunes libraries? I have most of my music files on my desktop Itunes (a PC). I want to do my Imovie work on my new Powerbook, but can't access the shared library in Imovie. I can use all the music in Itunes, so they recognize and see each other. Is this an Imovie limitation?

no, I probably wrote a little misunderstandable:
share - that is a function in iT which allows every computer to "tune in" into a sharing computer...
limit of 5 - you can easyly transfer files from your PC's iTunes into your Mac's iTunes! you just have to ... sorry, english phrase missing - give permission for usage on that machine....
mp3 - iTMS music is aac, but anyhow ....
harddrive space - using my "stick" method doesn't occupie any extra space; for usage in a iM prjoect, the music HAS to be imported onto your drive in any way... if you use music from your Mac's iT library, it will also generate a copy, it doesn't use an "alias" or just a "link" to your library (besides: Apple programmers, hey, idea!!)
DRM in iM projects - you cannot use any iTMS purchased music directly in iM...- you allways need the workaround of burning a cd-r(w)....
my workflow. BEFORE starting an iM project, I create a playlist of optional titles in iTunes; later in iM I have access to that playlist (and don't scroll thru >6k titles ...); you could easyly burn that titles/playlist on a cd.... or, if it non-copyright-protected material, you could burn a mp3 disc with much more titles....

  • Sharing ITunes files across multiple windows user accounts

How can my husband and I share our music files across two windows user accounts on the same computer.  As of now, when one of us buys new music, the other cant get it in their music library.  How do we get it to show up for both of us?

  • Sharing Itunes in Windows XP

Hi All - a few questions that I hope you can help me with. Thank very much.
    a) How do i share itunes in XP with multiple profiles?
    b) When itunes is in startup, does it launch before you log into a profile or do you need to log into a profile and that is when itunes launches? How is this best done?
    c) I think that itunes can't run concurrently across profiles...if i am having it launch in startup of profiles (and sharing the same database) does that mean that each time one of the three profiles on the computer launches three instances of itunes is going to launch. And how does this affect doing the above?
    Thanks again for your help.

That is one way to do it. There is another way, which is only slightly more difficult, but which you might find more attractive.
Basically, iTunes expects to find your library files in the "My Music/iTunes" folder. However, "My Music" is a special system folder, its location is defined by Windows.
If you download TweakUI, you can use it to set where your My Music folder is. So, if you create a folder that both you and your wife can access, and then set both of your My Music folders to be that folder, then you will have a shared library. No syncronization needed, changes you make to one will happen to the other because you both have the same library files.
Only downside to this is that you can't use Fast User Switching and thus have both people logged in and using iTunes at the same time, because while one of you has the library open, the other can't access it until you close it.
    It works fine.

  • Sharing iTunes with Windows 7

Currently running OSX 10.7.5 and Windows 7, along with newest version of iTunes 11.x
My iTunes and music files are on the Mac partition, and I wanted to be able to access my library from the Windows side. I installed iTunes and copied the iTunes library files over from my Mac side to the Windows side. I had iTunes open the library and changed preferences so that it pulls the music files from the Mac side (E:) and doesn't make any changes to the library. It works fine.
Now, my problem is in regards to keeping the library up to date with the Mac side. If I add a song on the Mac side (and yes, I want to use this as the "master" side), I would like it to show up on the Windows side. I read a post on here from a year or so ago that described creating a .bat file that would automatically copy the Mac library files to the windows side, replacing the old library files each time Windows booted. After some reading (don't have a lot of experience with Windows Command Prompt), I was able to write a .bat file that accomplished this.
My problem is that while it updates the files correctly, it resets my iTunes preferences such that iTunes now looks for my music files on the Windows side, and re-checks the boxes re: keeping the music library organized etc. When I manually change the preferences back, it has to update the library (I assume re-connecting all the library pointers to the actual files), but the new songs are there.
Is there a way to keep the iTunes preferences the same so that it doesn't have to re-connect all the files every time, and it just updates with the new stuff? I assume I just don't know enough enough about how iTunes library files work, but I read somewhere that the preferences were kept in \Local Data, and not in the iTunes folder. Thanks in advance.

If both computers are on the same wireless network, it might be most straightforward to just use Home Sharing to copy the music from the Windows PC to the MacBook Pro:
    Understanding Home Sharing
It means having a copy of the content locally on the MBP ... but from a backup perspective, that's not such a bad thing.

  • Sharing itunes Files from another PC.

I recently created a Virtual PC and installed itunes. In advanced settings of itunes I changed the directory of the folder to get files from my host PC. Then I added the folders from my host PC to the library on my virtual PC. It works fine except that the Cover Flow view will not show the album art (Just a black screen). The folder on my host PC are shared. If anyone is wondering why I am doing this is because I am using a linksys music bridge to stream music from my PC to my stereo but I want ot use my host PC for other things. Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

I discovered the true issue.   All the files under the "My Documents" location were encrypted by Credant Mobile Guardian Shield.  Even though I was able to use a bootable Knoppix DVD to copy the files, they cannot be opened due to the encryption software.  Cannot access the domain to login due to it being a decommissioned work laptop from a former job.  So nevermind.  Moving on.

  • ITunes for Windows freezes when importing a library. I have a large but not huge library of mostly iTunes purchased music on two authorized computers and would like to sync the files, export the library as a playlist, and import it on the other computer.

I am running iTunes for Windows 10.2.2 on Windows 7 Home. I have my iTunes library on both this computer and another authorized machine running Windows 7 Professional. I have a large but not enormous library, as I'm one of those people who doesn't pirate, use torrents, borrow from a dozen friends, or whatever other shades of gray you might imagine. It's mostly iTunes purchases with my old CD collection imported. I have started using the following technique to sync my libraries between my two authorized computers, an ability which you can probably all agree should one day be added to iTunes -- that would be different from Home Sharing, because the music would be stored locally and thus available on the road. With the added benefit of the entire library being backed up on the other machine in real-time. Anyway, when I switch from my desktop to laptop and vice versa, I use the following technique:
Connect both machines to the home network. One machine is the "Active" machine, which has most recently been used for iTunes media, purchases, ratings, etc.
On the "Active" machine, File-->Library-->Export. Save the file as "Library.xml" on the shared drive of the other machine.
Right-click "Library.xml" where it's been saved, and open another file that has two lines in it: The root path of the iTunes library on one machine and the root path of the iTunes library on the other machine.
Do a find/replace all in Notepad to make the library XML file point to where the files will be saved on the "Inactive" machine.
Run Microsoft SyncToy to synchronize the files between both music libraries; the most recent files win. This avoids copying the entire multi-gigabyte library over the network.
Open iTunes on the "Inactive" machine.
Go to Music, Select All, Delete. Keep files.
Do the same for Movies, Music Videos.
Go down to Playlists, select the top one, hold down the delete button until they're all gone.
File-->Library-->Import Playlist. Choose the "Library.xml" file you saved.
First a status bar comes up that says, "Importing library." It has the continually-scrolling progress bar, not the one that starts on the left and steadily creeps right. Then after about 30 seconds, that clears out. Wait. Typically a few minutes. Eventually a status bar will pop up saying something like, "Evaluating gapless playback information," or something like that.
The "Inactive" computer is now the "Active" computer. I can now play my library, it has all my playlists and metadata from the other machine.
Delete all the duplicate playlists named "Music," "Genius," "Purchased," and "iTunes DJ."
Well, I just upgraded to iTunes 10.2.2 a few days ago and tried to do this again like I've done it dozens of times before. Now, iTunes just goes unresponsive after the library import. It got through the "Importing library" bar to the long wait and stopped. I can still multiprocess and use other programs, but iTunes is hovering back there not responding to clicks. Task Manager doesn't seem to think iTunes is using my CPU, and I don't see my hard drive rattling. Any thoughts on why iTunes might hang up when importing a large library?
... Also, please help lobby Apple to come up with a network sync tool built into iTunes for a user with multiple authorized computers. Something different than Home Sharing so I can pull my laptop off the network and still have the synced library with me. And all my metadata changes will sync. The technique I use seems a little kludgey, don't you think?

iTunes isn't an editor. You need an app that's intended for editing audio files, like Adobe Audition (http://www.adobe.com/products/audition.html) or Audacity (free in the App Store).

  • Itunes File Sharing: Adding files doesn't work

    Hi,
i have a problem adding files via Itunes File Sharing in Apps. Here's my setup:
    Windows 7 64bit, german
    Itunes 11.1.5.5, x64, german
Iphone 5s, 32GB, directly attached via USB
several apps with file sharing support (OpenVPN, VLC, Good Reader...)
Now, when i choose one of the apps and click "Add...", i get a file selection dialogue, select a file and click 'ok'... that's it.
Nothing happens. The file is not added to the window.
It's not added to the phone after a sync, so it doesn't seem to be a display  problem. But i don't get an error message at
any point, so i'm quite flattered where to start looking for the problem.
    Steps so far:
    Reinstallation Itunes - no effect
    Reinstallation Drivers - no effect
Starting with a new media library - no effect
The only thing suspicious are some bonjour errors in the windows logs. But even with disabled bonjour service the problem persists.
I've searched for this in the forums but didn't find a proper thread/answer for this.
Anyone coming up with an idea? At least where to look for the problem? Is there a log file/command line parameter/deep inside special genius trigger to pull? I'm getting out of options here. :/
    Thanks a lot!
    Regards from germany,
    l0calhost

Problem solved. Complete deinstallation of ITunes, computer restart, telephone restart and finally reinstallation of the app did the trick.
But still, how would you debug a problem like this, when no error message comes up at any point?

  • I accidentally added two .doc files, they show in iTunes file sharing, but don't show on iPad?

I accidentally added two .doc files by dragging and dropping into itunes, under my device, then the app tab, then file sharing for Adobe Reader, they show in iTunes file sharing window, but don't show on iPad 3, and I cannot delete them on iTunes screen? Please help!

First, I would advise you to apply Tao philosophy to this. Given the dysfunction of most software, if this was just an accidental copy and you don't want them on iPad and they are not showing up anyway, what's the problem? Forget it. It's not worth the hassles. I'm more concerned that you have psychological issues you need to be dealing with, not this. You are making much too unnecessary work and stress for yourself.
As for deleting them, I'm assuming you highlighted them and hit delete and it didn't work. If not, it should. Works for me. But if it doesn't, my advice is also not to worry about it, as annoying as the clutter is. It will eventually resolve itself (like when your data files corrupt or your iPad crashes, LOL. (I apologize for my cynicism but I am fed up with dysfunctional software). It's not worth the hassles of trying to figure out petty issues.
As for me, I have the opposite, and very serious problem. I've got Reader on my iPad too. But I can't move the pdfs out of it and onto my laptop with iTunes' dysfunctional file sharing. I get the error "file cannot be copied because you do not have permission to see its contents." I have hundreds of pdfs on my iPad that I converted from web surfing with other programs that also don't work and I can't get them off the iPad for backup and to have a synced library I can access from both laptop and iPad.
I called iTunes twice and both times they blamed it on the app, saying iTunes file sharing doesn't support third party apps and that I should call Adobe and talk them into writing the code that will work with iTunes. Yeah, right. And Reader is not the only problem. This is happening with iAnnotate and Write PDF and other apps.
I suspect that both of us have the root problem, perhaps Apple's greedy refusal to support the apps that it sells in the app store and are quasi-integrated enough to show up in the file sharing documents list, but can't be moved or deleted; and the apps that don't bother to make their apps fully work with iTunes file sharing.
If anyone has any solutions ......

  • IPad Apps File Sharing in iTunes - files not displaying

Are you not supposed to be able to copy files to and from your computer/iPad for apps that support File Sharing in iTunes? When I open iTunes, connect iPad, click on the Apps, scroll below to File Sharing, the files on my iPad for the apps listed do not display; ie: Pages documents, Numbers documents, etc. I am running a Windows XP computer. I'm quite certain they were showing up there a few weeks ago.

You have to tell the iPad to send it to iTunes.
Open the document you want. Tap the spanner icon. Click Send to iTunes.
Now go to iTunes, find the iPad in the left hand pane, click Apps at the top, go to the bottom of the page, select pages in the box under 'File Sharing', and you will see that document there.
Pointless feature but there you go.

Instead of removing the music from the cloud or the iTunes library why not shuffle your music using a Smart Playlist which excludes the holiday music, or tracks that are not checked. For example, use this very simple Smart Playlist:

If anyone is reading this still looking for what caused the issue and how to fix it here is what I discovered.
The antivirus program our company uses, Bitdefender Antivirus Plus, was causing some of the PDF files not to open. After troubleshooting the different modules and settings the culprit was..
Scan SSL in Privacy Control Settings. Turning it OFF solved the problem and all the PDF files that previously would not open now open just fine. This issue has been sent to Bitdefender for them to review. If you use a different antivirus program and are having this issue try locating the Scan SSL setting and see if turning it off solves the problem.

  • Family Sharing and Itunes ( on WIndows )

I have Itunes on my windows computer. My wife has an Ipad, Ipad Air,  and Iphone 5 with her own account, we got my son a Ipod Touch, I was able to do the Family Sharing, but had to set it up on my Wifes account, since I do not have my Itunes linked to an apple product. Is there a way to get my account linked in the family sharing also, so my son has access to music I have already purchased just like he has access to my wifes itunes apps/music.
One thing I thought about is could I re-sync her older ipad to my account, and add it, or does it require a specific update, because the 1st Gen Ipad cant be updated to the new OS.

@TigerFrank, not sure whether you got your answer but for any reason if you haven't then here are the steps to see the purchases from all the family shared accounts in your iTunes for Windows...
Once you're in iTunes, you see your account name on the top, on the right side of the Apple logo.  There is a little pointing down arrow, click on it
on the opened up menu, click on Family Purchases
on the Family Purchases window, on the top left you see your Name with the little pointing down arrow, click on it again
on the opened up menu, select the account you want to download the music from.
That is how you do it, because I just learned about it and thought I would share the information so that others also get benefited from it.  Hope, this helps...
