SharePoint 2013 Stretched Farm

Considering implemented a Stretched Farm in SharePoint 2013 / with SQL Server Always On AG Synchronise commit
We have <1ms latency and 10gbps bandwidth between data centres
Has anyone implemented a stretched farm in SP2013 and what was the experience?

Hi
Raj ,
According to your description, my understanding is that  you implemented a stretched farm in SharePoint 2013.
For achieving your demand, you can refer to the article by sergeluca (SharePoint MVP):
STRETCHED FARMS ARE NOW SUPPORTED WITH SHAREPOINT 2013
PROTECT YOUR SHAREPOINT 2013 DATA TIER WITH SQL SERVER 2012 ALWAYS
ON AVAILABILITY GROUPS
Here are some good information about stretched farm you can have a look:
Setting-up SharePoint 2010 stretched farm
Killing two birds with one
stone: SharePoint HA and DR with stretch farm, and everything you want to know about it
And  the recommendation is to always avoid it where possible as
Trevor Seward says above.
Please inform me freely if you have any questions.

  • Do you need an additional slot for the RBS and does the RBS count as an additional hard drive in the Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?

    Hello Community
If you have a clustered Sharepoint 2013 Server farm running RAID 10, on a
clustered WS2012 R2 server that has 10 hard drive slots:
            (4) drives being part of the Sharepoint 2013 Server farm
            (1) drive for the Web App Server
            (5) are for hot swap if any of the production hard drives fail
        The question(s) is:
            - If the server only has 10 slots for hard drives are you still allowed to add a
NAS/RBS drive and does the NAS/RBS drive get clustered also, or does this scenario require
reducing the RAID level down to RAID 5 to allow for NAS/RBS hard drive?
            - Does the NAS/RBS hard drive need a hard drive for hot swap?
            - Does the NAS/RBS drive have to have Sharepoint 2013 Server or WS2012 R2 running on it?
            - Does the Web App Server have Sharepoint 2013 running or just WS2012 R2 running on it?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

RAID 10 requires a minimum of 4 hard drives. The LUN for RBS must be attached to the SQL Server, not SharePoint server, as a local drive. You just need to be running the minimum required OS for the version of SQL Server you're using.
Do you mean Office Web Apps by "Web App Server"? If so, that cannot have SharePoint installed on it. Otherwise, if you're just referring to it as another SharePoint server, yes it would have SharePoint installed on it.

  • What needs to be done to rebuild a current Sharepoint 2010 Server farm to work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?

    Hello Community
Currently I have a Sharepoint 2010 Server farm.
One server contains the database and DNS server
because it is the the domain controller.
The other server Contains the Sharepoint 2010 Server software
and is the the application server where applications such as Metadata,
UPs, etc, reside (including web applications with sites built with the UI).
Now I am going to change to Sharepoint 2013 Server because currently
there is no newer version of Sharepoint available.
I am ready to rebuild the current Sharepoint 2010 farm configuration into
a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm from scratch.
The question  is what do needs to be added and\or changed to make the current
Sharepoint 2010 Server farm configuration work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

There is no direct in-place uprade method for SharePoint 2010 to 2013. You need to create a new SharePoint 2013 farm from scratch and attach service and content databases to upgrade them. Check out Upgrade
to SharePoint 2013 for more information about the process.
If you have another server, you would install SharePoint 2013 on this. If you don't, you'll need to remove SharePoint 2010 from your existing server and then install SharePoint 2013. Check out Hardware
and software requirements for SharePoint 2013 before starting to make sure your server meets the minimum requirements for SharePoint 2013:
Web server or application server in a three-tier farm
Pilot, user acceptance test, or production deployment of SharePoint Server 2013 or SharePoint Foundation 2013.
    12 GB memory
    64-bit, 4 processor cores
    80 GB for system drive

  • Backup Sharepoint 2013 SP1 Farm with SQL 2014 RTM "Always On" using System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager

Is backing up and Restoring SharePoint 2013 SP1 Farm with SQL 2014 RTM  "Always On" High Availability now supported using "System Center 2012 R2 Data Protection Manager"?
    I cannot find information anywhere.
    Regards,
    Igor

This is a DPM supportability issue, I believe. Last I heard, no it was not supported. SharePoint 2013 does not support SQL 2014 until the April 2014 CU. The CU should be out soon, although it appears to have been delayed (usually comes out on Patch Tuesday,
    which was this past Tuesday).

  • How to join a Domain Controller Server to an two-tier (SQL Server 2012) and Sharepoint 2013 (SP2013) farm

    Hi,
I am trying to build a 3-tier SharePoint 2013 farm.
    1. SQL Server 2012, Windows 2012 VM
    2. DC Server, Windows 2012 VM
    3. SharePoint 2013, Windows 2012 VM
I didn't built the DC server. Someone else did. However, I created about 14 service domain user accounts for SQL Server and SharePoint install and operation.
I was able to join the SQL Server into the SharePoint server farm using SharePoint 2013 Product Configuration Wizard.  When I start the Central Admin, and click on Servers in the Farm, I only see the SharePoint server and SQL server,
but the DC server is not listed.  Any suggestion on what did I miss?
    Thanks
    Jean

You cannot join the Domain Controller to your SharePoint farm.  You must instead join each server from that farm to the domain that is served up by that DC.  You will want to uninstall SharePoint and probably SQL before you do this.  If it's
an option, I would re-provision your VMs completely and start fresh.  Once you login to a new server, join that server to the target domain like this:
    http://www.petri.co.il/join-windows-server-2012-to-domain.htm
You'd have to ensure that your DNS resolves to the target domain on the server being joined to the domain.  If it doesn't, you can always use HOSTS entries to overcome that in the short term.
Once you've joined both the future SQL and SharePoint servers to the domain, you can install SQL Server and then SharePoint on their prospective servers to create your farm.
I trust that answers your question...
    Thanks
    C

  • SharePoint 2013 redudant farm requirement

    Hi
Our customer is looking to deploy sharepoint solution at both of their locations (lets say A & B), so that users from A location can access application from A location and users from B location can access application from B location.
Also they want solution should be redundant at all level and fully replicable with both location (A & B)
also in case any location is down , user from that location can be forwarded to other location.
Please suggest how we can achieve above requirement.
    Best Regards,
    Safder

I am trying to provide you an overview of the solution here. You may have already gone through various useful links on TechNet on "High Availability" with SharePoint.
High Availability (redundancy) at Web Front end server level:
Server:WFE1 and Server WFE2, may be present in location A and B respectively. Connect them to the same SharePoint Farm, while configuring the Farm. This way all web applications created get replicated across all the IIS servers in the farm. Ensure any specific
changes to web.config are in place on both the servers.
Now users from Location A can always be pointed to WFE1 and likewise.
High Availability (HA) at Application server level:
Server: App1 and Server App2, may be present in location A and B respectively. Connect them to the same SharePoint farm, while configuring the farm. On both these servers you may choose to run "Central Admin" site and hence straight away you got redundancy
    for CA site.
For Search HA, you may consider creating Index partitioning and use both servers.
Most of the information in SharePoint will always reside in DB (both Content and Service related configurations). Hence in scenario where one App1 goes down, you may run the associated service on another App2 (or you can keep them running on App2 too from
    day one).

  • HNSC Sharepoint 2013 - Multiserver Farm

    Hello All,
    I have 3 server environment
    SPAPP ( application server )
    SPWFE ( WFE)
    SPSQL( SQL )
when I try to create a web app with out entering host header value ( to create host names site collections in it ) it create an IIS Site and virtual directory folder on SPAPP only. it automatically picks up SPAPP as a URL. I try to recreate it and leave
host header empty and change the URL manually to the SPWFE on web app creation page ,  but site was again created in IIS of SPAPP and folder is also created there.
SPWFE is responsible for delivering site and I think it should be created on all server where " SharePoint Foundation web application" service is running. is that right understanding or do i need to do some thing different so that site and virtual
folder will be created on all servers and then make DNS enter for URL  to redirect end user  to the SPWFE ?
any help will be appreciated, please let me know if you need more info .

If SPWFE is web front end server, try running SharePoint Foundation web application and central
administration from there only and see behavior. If it is not getting provisioned and getting time out, try increasing the central admin app pool shutdown time limit from IIS.

  • SharePoint 2013 deployed using Layer 2 network; considered stretched Farm?

Planning to deploy SharePoint 2013 in different DC’s, the distance is 130 Kms between DC’s. The bandwidth is 100GB but latency is <20ms
but it’s a layer 2 network. Is this deployment considered to be a stretched Farm?
    Mohammed Asif Kazi

are both DC on same domain? what about the servers, will all in the same DC or they spread across DCs?
with the latency you mentioned, this is not supported. It is highly recommended, avoid it as much as you can.

  • SharePoint 2013 and MS Office Web Apps - error in sharepoint's url calls OWAps

I have new SharePoint 2013 Server farm and one dedicated Office Web Apps (OWAps) server.
This farm is placed in one domain (Acompany.local). There is other domain BCompany.local whitch has both trusted to first domain (two diffirent forests, two company's branches).
Users from second domain BCompany.local well see intranet portal, build in sharepoint in the first domain (url like http://intranet.Acompany.local).
But, when they try to use OWAps, f.e. whatching preview or try to open docs for edit in browser - they see error in frame.
I'm looked it in google chrome's developer tools and find' that sharepoint use wrong url to call OWAps - like http://owaps/... instead of http://owaps.Acompany.local/...
When I created new office web app farm by:
    New-OfficeWebAppsFarm -InternalURL "http://owaps.Acompany.local" - ExternalURL "http://owaps.Acompany.local" -AllowHttp -EditingEnabled
And in sharepoint farm new SWOPI binding by:
    New-SPWOPIBinding -ServerName "http://owaps.Acompany.local" -AllowHTTP
Get-SPWOPIBinding tell that all SWOPI bindings are http://owaps.Acompany.local, but in devtools I continue to see wrong http://owaps/... url
Any idea to fix this behavior?

The reason WAC is recommended to be installed on a dedicated server is that it recreates the IIS sites/settings. This is why you're seeing the setting reset itself after restart.
What I'd probably recommend is creating a script that queries the WAC URL on a regular basis.

  • What is the build version for Sharepoint 2013 Server including trial version there is one?

    Hello Community
When using WS2012 and Sharepoint 2013 Server, what
build version for a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm should
be applied and where do you get the cumulative update
for it (trial version also if there is one)?

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to know which SharePoint build version should be applied to Windows Server 2012 and where to get cumulative update.
If you want to use SharePoint in Windows Server 2012, you can use the RTM version 15.0.4420.1017.
For CU update and build version, I suggest you can refer the detailed article below:
