Shortcuts in x term (alias)

I've brought this up before but never really perfected it,
i've spent a bit of time on it now and its very useful and quite easy to do.
Firstly the shortcuts - 'alias' is similar to macro's in windows. Its using a letter, series of letters/numbers or a word to perform a command in the shell (X Terminal) for example to become root i just run 'r' or to run apt-get update i run 'ud'
you can customize these and add your own as you want, just don't use pre built commands like rm, mv and cp
There are 2 locations you need to save these
/home/user/.profile and /root/.bashrc (can be saved to /root/.profile also)
all the root commands need to be done as 'root' and not 'sudo gainroot' as sudo gainroot doesn't read .profile or .bashrc
you will need leafpad installed for these instructions
the first place if for anything that doesn't need root access
open xterm and run
leafpad .profile
copy/paste these commands to it and save it
alias r='root'
alias sr='sudo gainroot'
alias e='exit'
alias ls='ls -a'
alias u='cd ..'
alias h='cd /home/user/MyDocs'
alias lp='leafpad'
alias t='/usr/bin/osso-xterm ""'
then run
root
leafpad .bashrc
scroll down to the bottom of the file and copy/paste these commands to it and save it, then close xterm and when you re open it all the shortcuts will work
alias r='root'
alias sr='sudo gainroot'
alias e='exit'
alias ls='ls -a'
alias u='cd ..'
alias h='cd /home/user/MyDocs'
alias lp='leafpad'
alias t='/usr/bin/osso-xterm ""'
alias ud='apt-get update'
alias ug='apt-get upgrade -y'
alias ac='apt-get clean'
alias ar='apt-get autoremove'
alias ai='apt-get install'
alias as='apt-cache search'
alias ks='kernel-config show'
alias kl='kernel-config load'
alias kf='kernel-config limits'
more advanced users can use vi to add the commands and the source command to activate them and they can be written on one line so you don't need to write 'alias' before each one if using vi

EDIT
instead of saving the root commands to .bashrc, save them to .profile instead
the directory will look like this
# ~/.profile: executed by Bourne-compatible login shells.
if [ -f ~/.bashrc ]; then
. ~/.bashrc
fi
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11
export PATH
mesg n
leave a gap then add the alias here
you can make your own up as you wish but don't use things like 'mv' and 'rm' for obvious reasons and cpitchford said its best to keep them to 2 letters.
if you're unsure about which letters you can use then just post here and i'll tell you if it'll cause a problem

  • Unable to create alias

I've noticed that with several apps the cmd-L command to make an alias does not work. Likewise with these same apps the make alias command in the finder's file menu is grayed out and unavailable.
Can anyone give me an explanation of this and what I might do to remedy it

    Hi, W. B.
    1. The Command-L keyboard shortcut to create an alias is a Finder shortcut. Likewise, the Make Alias contextual menu choice only operates in Finder.1.1. What are the "other apps" in which you are attempting this?
1.2. Is it related to specific file types?
1.3. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose?2. An errant Startup or Login Item may be the cause. My "Troubleshooting Startup and Login Items" FAQ can help you pin that down if such an item is causing the problem.
    3. See my "Finder Issues? How to delete its preferences" FAQ.
    Good luck!

  • STILL NEED HELP w/ Disk Warrior pleeeaaase

Have had some interesting encounters with extensions: at startup, the system was hanging up at certain extensions, resulting in my manually uninstalling Tech Tool 3 and a new trial graphics program we tried out, called Silhouette. Have also cleaned the disk drive.
However, I am still unable to use the disk drive reliably. After turning off the TWAIN extension (which cleared up the remaining startup problems), the disk drive won't open upon request after I have inserted the Disk Warrior, which I have used successfully in the past. The last time the drawer would open when I clicked on the Eject Upper Drive icon on my computer was when I inserted the Disk Warrior. When I rebooted, twice the computer failed to recognize that there was a disk in there at all, booting all the way up to the OS 9.2 desktop without even an icon showing the presence of the disk. When I hold down the "C" key while rebooting, the screen remains a blank blue color, with no sign of startup. When I let go of the "C" key, the computer boots up fine, but the Eject Upper Drive shortcut doesn't cause the drive door to open. I killed the shortcut and created another alias for the desktop, but it doesn't work either. When I try to reboot and hold down the right button on the mouse, to cause the door to open while rebooting, an icon of a disk appears, with a question mark on its face. If I release the mouse button, the computer starts up fine...but the Upper Drive won't open and I can't see any icon to indicate that I have Disk Warrior in there.
I have been at this all day...does this make sense to anyone?

    Hi, Sandy -
The term 'optical drive' is a generic one - it refers to any drive which uses a laser (optical means) to read a disk. This includes a basic CD drive, a CD/DVD drive, etc.
The term 'optical drive' will not appear in System Profiler. Instead, it should appear on one of the "Internal ATA" buses as something like DVD-ROM or one of the other variants of that term. Since your G4 (MDD) has two optical drives, both should be displayed separately, but on the same Internal ATA bus.
If the drive in question is not listed, then there may well be something wrong with the drive itself, as Tom has suggested.
However, if neither of the two optical drives is listed, that would tend to indicate there is something wrong with the bus that serves both those drives - perhaps the cable has become disconnected at the main logic board, or the controller on that board may have failed.
Is there a way to force it open?
On older machines the answer would be yes - the outer drive door could be pried open, and the 'emergency Mac ejection tool' (a straightened paperclip) could be inserted into a hole on the inner face of the drive to manually eject a disk.
Not sure if the newer drives still have that hole, or if it has been relocated to the rear of the drives.
Okay - found an Apple KBase article that addresses that, complete with pictures -
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88215
It appears that in some cases it is necessary to remove the drive in order to access that hole.

  • Mac OS X can not copy files...?

I am very new to Mac OS X and I found it strange that I can not copy files from my hard drive (docs, spreadsheets) to a blank CD-ROM disk. I called the local Apple store and they said I have to buy a third party application to copy(burn) files to CD-ROM disks. I am not talking about copying copyrighted files, just plain old Word and Excel docs. Does anyone know if this is true? I have to get a separate application to do this? Thanks, Tony.

You can certainly copy files to to a blank CD without extra programs. But once there is data on the disc, it becomes much more complicated to add data at a later date.
Windows, however, had a proprietary CD filesystem that let you use the CD like a floppy disc, where you could add and "erase" files randomly.
You can buy an inexpensive program called BurnAgain that does something similar on the Mac.
    http://freeridecoding.com/burnagaindvd/
Frankly, though, I think CDs make bad floppy discs. There is much more chance for data corruption when they are re-written.
I'd recommend an inexpensive USB Thumbdrive (Flashdrive). They come in all sizes and really do work like a giant floppy disk -- only much faster. They are dirt cheap. You can find one the capacity of a CD for about $10 or less. DVD-size flashdrives are now under $40 some places.
The easy way to burn data (once) to a CD or DVD is to create a Burn Folder. Hold down the CTL key and click once on your desktop. You'll get a pop-up menu with a choice to create a New Burn Folder. Name the Folder what you want the Disc to be named. Then open the folder and drag the files or folders you want to Burn onto the burn folder. It will actually create links (aliases or shortcuts in Windows terms) to those items. Click on the burn button at the top of the folder and it will ask for you to insert a blank CD or DVD.
You can discard the burn folder if you are through with it, because it just contains alias (shortcuts). But I must warn you that if you navigate into the subfolders of those shortcuts, you will be dealing with your actual files. So please, don't delete anything inside a folder inside a burn folder -- those are your real files!

  • Newbie with application problem and question on cam chats!!

Hi, ive just got my macbook yesterday and I bought the student edition of adobe creative suite master edition for uni. After buying this and installing it, i wanted to save the main applications in a stack for easy access rather than going to the HDD then apps then clicking on the individual. As there are approx 14 application in this package, it is too many to have in the dock so a stack out be great.
However when i dragged them into the a new stack it carried along all the other files with each program which was messy. So i went back and did it again but by using the app itself. When i went to open them it said it had been moved and needed repairing. So i reinstalled the lot and i now have them in the application folder again.
Please can you help me to create a stack with all the applications, i think these would need to be short cuts but i dont know how to create them. Thanks for your time.
Oh. Leopard is amazing. I hooked up ichat with an aim account and its wicked, only have one contact though. What other instant messenger can i use that works with the cam rather than loading up windows and msn. I currently have ichat which works and adium.

    Hi shorty,
Welcome to the bright side of the computing universe. Here's your first lesson in Mac terminology. The Mac equivalent of the Windows 'shortcut' is called an 'alias'.
Here are ways to create and use aliases:
To create an alias, click the item to select it, and choose File > Make Alias (or Command - L). You can create as many aliases as you need for a single item, and you can move the aliases to folders or to the desktop.
To create an alias for an item and relocate it in one step, hold down the Command and Option keys while you drag the item’s icon to another folder or to the desktop. Release the mouse button before releasing the Command and Option keys.
To find the original item of an alias, select the alias and choose File > Show Original.
    Enjoy your new MacBook… =)

  • Question about aliases

The AppleScript Language Guide says (at [this Web page|http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptua l/AppleScriptLangGuide/conceptual/ASLRfundamentals.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40000983-CH218-SW28]):
An alias object is a dynamic reference to an existing file system object. Because it is dynamic, it can maintain the link to its designated file system object even if that object is moved or renamed.
Now let's consider the following script:
*set theFile to alias "Macintosh HD:Users:pierre:Documents:Test.rtf"* -- "Test.rtf" is a TextEdit document
*tell application "Finder" to open theFile*
If I rename the TextEdit document or move it for example to the desktop, and then run the script again, it returns the following message: error "File alias Macintosh HD:Users:pierre:Documents:Test.rtf of «script» wasn’t found." number -43
Could someone tell me what it is that I don't understand?

    Hi Hiroto,
Many thanks first for your thorough explanation. I understand the issue much better now. Nevertheless, at the risk of looking stubborn, let me cite more completely what ASLG says on [this page|http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptua l/AppleScriptLangGuide/conceptual/ASLRfundamentals.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40000983-CH218-SW33], just following an example very similar to mine:
Finding the object an alias refers to is called resolving an alias. AppleScript 2.0 attempts to resolve aliases only when you run a script. However, in earlier versions, AppleScript attempts to resolve aliases at compile time.
Once you run the previous example, creating the alias, the script will be able to find the original file when you run it again, even if the file’s name or location changes. (However, if you run the script again after recompiling it, it will create a new alias.)
The first paragraph says exactly the same thing as [note 4444698|http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/releasenotes/AppleScript/RN-Appl eScript/RN-105/RN-10_5.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40000982-CH105-SW15] of the AS Release Notes, that most of the object specifiers are no longer evaluated at compile time, but only at run time.
So why does the second paragraph still add that the script will be able to find the original file when you run it again, even if the file’s name or location changes? Did Apple forget to remove this paragraph from ASLG? Or was the alias object supposed to behave the same in AS 2.0 as before, even when evaluated at run time? In the latter case, there would be a real bug in AS 2.0. In my opinion, the very term “alias” implies that an alias object should continue to behave as much as possible as a real "alias file" (created by the “Make Alias” menu item).
Finally, let's remember what is said in the [introduction of ASLG|http://developer.apple.com/mac/library/documentation/AppleScript/Conceptua l/AppleScriptLangGuide/introduction/ASLRintro.html#//appleref/doc/uid/TP40000983-CH208-SW1]:
AppleScript 2.0 can use scripts developed for any version of AppleScript from 1.1 through 1.10.7, any scripting addition created for AppleScript 1.5 or later for Mac OS X, and any scriptable application for Mac OS v7.1 or later.
Should Apple also remove the above paragraph from ASLG, or should they try to conform to their initial goal?

  • Aliases, mailforwardaddress, direct ldap, seeking clarification

    Howdy,
We're running iMS 5.2p1 with IDS. We're still in dirsync mode and simply want to switch to direct ldap. The instructions are clear but I'm hesitating as I look into our aliases file and how to proceed. My questions are as follows -
    1) yes or no: In direct ldap mode, the msg-instance/db/aliases file is NOT used ever?
    2) if the answer to #1 is YES, then is the "solution" to create an ldap entry for a simple mail-id with a mailforwardaddress: attribute? Or if distributing to multiple users from a single mail-id, create a group/distribution list?
    3) Is it possible to be in direct ldap mode AND still use an alias database?
We're not in the extreme on alias usage, maybe a few hundred. However when I start looking at adding a few hundred LDAP entries and then managing mailforwardaddresses: for something I used to do in one line in an alias file it becomes overkill. Perchance an ou=alias ldap entry could be thrown into the next version or maybe even gasp use the alias entry for all our Solaris servers which is already stored in LDAP?
It may be a case where performance vs. scalability vs. simplicity and I can accept that as a sound reason. Man alive though I love iMS and my aliases file! <smile>
    Thanks for any feedback,
    Doug

Actually, I'd like to correct that.
) yes or no: In direct ldap mode, the
msg-instance/db/aliases file is NOT used ever?
The aliasesdb.db is referred to, in the case that
direct ldap lookup does not find anything (this is
what the "alias magic" setting in option.dat does).
    2) if the answer to #1 is YES, then is the "solution"
to create an ldap entry for a simple mail-id with a
mailforwardaddress: attribute? Or if distributing to
multiple users from a single mail-id, create a
    group/distribution list?
I"m not at all sure what you're trying to achieve.
We normally recommend REMOVING the old aliasesdb.db,
, unless there are things there you need to keep, or
    are willing to maintain.
If you need a few aliases, there is a separate
aliases file. If you need alternate addresses, put
'em in the user's mailalternateaddress or
mailequivalentaddress attributes. This makes sense, I'll summarize more below.
    >
    3) Is it possible to be in direct ldap mode AND still
    use an alias database?
Again, yes, but why would you want to do that? You'd
have to create the database, and maintain it. Bad
    Idea.
We're not in the extreme on alias usage, maybe a few
hundred. However when I start looking at adding a few
hundred LDAP entries and then managing
mailforwardaddresses: for something I used to do in
one line in an alias file it becomes overkill.
Why forwarding addresses? This really doesn't make
sense.Sure it does, in my mind <smile> here's the situation. We're a college where students, staff and faculty will either graduate, move to another college nearby or move across country. When they do so, maintaining an entry in a file such as -
    jsmith: [email protected]
Is pretty simple. This file can also be shared with other Sun servers or placed into the LDAP/NIS Alias entry. So the functionality extends beyond iMS a bit.
With a graduating class of say 400, with an email forwarding policy of 12 months after departure, these would accumulate in the LDAP database with no other iMS information than a mailforwardaddress needed. As we know, LDAP requires a tad more information to accept a record. Hence the perception on my part of the alias file. (I'm just afraid of change, bear with me!)
    >
How do you do it NOW? What is it you're doing? We run in dirsync mode and rebuild the alias database. I also think I'm using the terms alias *file* and alias *database* interchangeably. I do understand that the DB gets built from the file.
    >
    >
Perchance an ou=alias ldap entry could be thrown into
the next version or maybe even *gasp* use the alias
entry for all our Solaris servers which is already
    stored in LDAP?
It may be a case where performance vs. scalability
vs. simplicity and I can accept that as a sound
reason. Man alive though I love iMS *and* my aliases
    file! <smile>
Again, what is it exactly that you want to do? Most
likely there's an easy way to do it.
Thanks for any feedback,Thank you, I appreciate the additional information. We also use the alias file to add quick addresses like for a department which only wants mail sent from one email address to many. No other functionality needed. For example -
    summerconference2003: user1, user2, user3
A simple and quick "one to several" email address. Granted, for iMS I'd have to add the domain but the concept is the same.
    Thanks again,
    Doug

  • Hiding icons

How do i hide desktop icons that I will want displayed in my dock? When I drag them into the trash off the desktop the entire program is erased...
    thanks.

Are you referring to the DMG files that appear on your desktop after downloading a program off the internet? If so, those are merely temporary containers to hold the files until you move them to your "Applications" folder or some other place on your hard drive. They are not meant to be a permanent place to hold the program - and most programs will tell you to drag the files somewhere.
Once you do drag that file to wherever you want it to be, you can safely delete that DMG file.
An alias is similar to a shortcut. Drag the alias to the dock and it will serve as a way to quickly launch apps that you use frequently.

  • Resolving aliases window comes up

    Hi,
I have had a fair number of aliases (20) on my desktop forever. They go to folders mostly, some apps and a few volumes that are not connected. About a month ago, I started to get a Finder window pop up saying the system was resolving that alias when I double click on them. I threw out a Finder pref file (I forget which one) that was recomended on some forum (I forget which one), that didn't help. Went to the Apple Store yesterday for this a few other issues. The "genius" didn't know what to make of it and wasn't even familiar with aliases in the first place. (Called them icons with arrows. Her superior and her called them "shortcuts" too which amused me...) Anyway, she recommended I reinstall the system software. I can do that but thought I'd ask here first. I saw another thread with this problem back in 2011 (https://discussions.apple.com/message/16431534#16431534) but it wasn't resolved, no pun intended.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? Creating new aliases will only have the problem return after the file/folder/app has been opened a few times. Logging out made no difference. (I didn't set up a bunch of aliases in one of those other accounts to test them but will if needed.)
FWIW, my desktop folder is 2.29 gb. I have 8 gb ram, 184 gb free on a 500 gb hd.
    Thanks.
    John L
PS Peripherally related to this thread: I've had an alias to my home folder on my desktop forever. Now I can't create a new one, make an alias is greyed out on the File menu. Remind me how I can do this. Thanks.

    Hi,
For your main problem I would start figuring out if this problem is system wide or just in your user account.
You can make a temporary account to test with.
If it's only in your account, something must be corrupt there. But I wouldn't know what to look for. Maybe a higher level forum member can tune in here. If it's system wide I'd personally do a reinstall, which is likely less work than figuring out what the problem is exactly...
Maybe you can do a safe boot, can take some time, as your disk is checked and repaired. Might help. Doesn't hurt.
    For the second (PS) problem:
You can create an alias of your Home folder by holding Option + Command keys and then drag your home folder to the desktop. (this shortcut works for any alias you want to make.)
    ! Don't drag from the sidebar !
    drag from this location:
Macintosh HD (or whatever your internal disk is called) > Users > Your homefolder.
    Good luck...

  • Change "Applications" directory location association

I recently installed a solid state drive that is not large enough to hold my entire system, but is large enough to hold all my applications. I've copied my applications folder over to the SSD drive, but, the system still associates with the applications on the HD, for instance, clicking the apple at the top left, and then opening System Preferences will open System Preferences from the original HD. Also, when I search Spotlight or LaunchBar for an application, it also associated with the folder on the HD.
How can I force the system to associate with the Applications folder on the SSD? So that all updates to applications go to that drive, etc.
    Thank you for any help.

You need to first either delete the Applications folder on the HDD or rename it to something like Applications.old. Then select the icon of the Applications folder on the SSD, Press COMMAND-I to open the Get Info window and select Make Alias from the menu. Drag the alias over to the HDD where your now renamed Applications folder is located. Rename the alias by removing " alias" from its filename. Now all calls to the Applications folder will find the one on the SSD instead of on the HDD.
You can use a shortcut for making the alias by holding down the OPTION and COMMAND keys then drag the icon of the Applications folder on the SSD over to the HDD. This obviates the need to rename the alias.

  • How do I create a server shortcut alias

I used to have a couple alias files in my dock that our Mac guy setup for me.
Since I don't have an actual monitor hooked up to our server - and I want to use a database parked on the server, I used Screen Sharing to open the screen of the server on my local mac. There used to be an icon alias that did this.
I know that in the Finder I can go to GO>CONNECT TO SERVER..> and I see there is the info for the shortcut there that works just fine - but that is more steps than simply clicking on the icon that used to work before Yosemite was installed.
Anyone know how to make a shortcut to make this work? I think what happened before was that a blank folder was made and somehow its properties were changed to direct it to the server - does that sound right? I dunno...

II'm in the same boat. I have to connect to my headless mini everyday and clicking an alias was perfect. Now, having to go around the houses seems so unnecessary. Come on Apple, give us an answe or fix this please.

  • How to switch off shortcut / alias arrows?

    Hello,
Is there any way to switch off the little shortcut / alias arrows in the bottom left corner of an alias in OSX?
    Thanks!

Yes you can but as 2Point5 notes it isn't a good idea. But if you are intent on doing so, the simple way is to download and purchase a program called Candybar. The arrow is basically a badge that's applied over an icon. In Candybar you can replace the arrow badge with one of your own - a totally transparent icon for example.
However, having done this, you will no longer be able to look at an icon and know if it is the real file or the alias. You'd have make sure that all your aliases were named with alias or some symbol or labeled with a color or you'd have to do a Get Info to see if it was an alias or not. All this sounds like a good recipe for accidentally erasing the real file and not the alias.

  • IMovie and iPhoto file duplication or alias/shortcut?

If I make a video on my iPhone, import it into iPhoto, and then open it in iMovie by clicking on the iPhoto video folder, does iMovie copy the video from iPhoto or does it make a shortcut/alias for that video file? In other words, do I end up having two full-size files of that video or does iMovie simply make a shortcut to the original iPhoto file?

    Hi
    Both !
Most often iMovie just points to where Audio and Photos and Video are stored = if material then is moved all links are broken and hard to impossibly to mend.
So I do use one external hard disk - and makes copies of all (Not Aliases) material just in case.
While doing so (as iMovie usually does) it doesn't take up any more space and this is VERY IMPORTANT regarding iMovie projects - as Here NOTHING is stored or copied - so if original material in iPhoto, iTunes or wherever is deleted - project too are gone - most often forever.
So Safety Copies are to me very important !
Sometime material is stored in iMovie (somewhere) and I think that if You Finalize a movie project - a real movie file is made (I never use that function as it more often gives problems and this takes lot's of space)

  • How to save all open files IE like a shortcut or alias to them.

    Hi everyone,
I know there must be a way to do this in Dreamweaver, but I
    can't find it.
When I am working on a series of pages (for example, 3 or 4
pages with a bunch of include pages) and I want to save a shortcut
or alias that would re-open them all for me (like the "Bookmark All
Tabs" option in Firefox that will save all the open tabs so you can
open them all at once later).
This will save a TON of time, instead of me writing down
every single page name, and then, opening them all by hand later.
I know you can use the Site Navigation, to see the files, but
    that runs sooooo slooooowwwww.
I appreciate the help in advance,
    Regards,
    Don

yeah, i can definitely see how it would be useful for some
    people! and
hey, for all i know, i'm the one who's not an average user. i
    was
pretty much just saying that i can see how that's something
    Firefox
would think to do, but not necessarily a program like
    Dreamweaver. but i
agree that it would be a useful feature in lots of programs.
    and i think
that what Murray suggested is probably pretty close to what
    you're
    looking for, if not exactly.
