Should I go with the 12" or the 15"?

My PB Titanium 15" died this week. Too bad, because I really liked it. I had a 7200 RPM drive in there with 1G of RAM and it was actually pretty peppy.
My main system at home is a G5 dual-core 2.0 tower. However, I travel often and would like to replace my Ti-book with a new PB.
I'm having trouble deciding which one to get. I'll be using it mostly for web browsing, email, light photo editing (mostly in iPhoto, though Aperture may be a possibility in the future), iWork, Garage Band, etc. I don't really do heavy graphics work, video editing or processor intensive stuff.
I see that the graphics card on the 12" is 64mb while it's 128mb on the 15". How significant would that difference be using the applications I mentioned above?
Also, I see that it's not possible to add a 7200 RPM drive to the 12". When I did that for my PB Titanium, I noticed a huge speed difference. Again, I'm wondering if the difference between the 5400 RPM drive on the 12" and the 7200 RPM drive on the 15" would be discernible with the apps I'm using?
In terms of price, I'm a student so I get a discount. I get $100 off the 12", but $200 off the 15". Hmmm.
I've had a 15" PB for years now and haven't minded the larger size. The monitor of the 12" seems awfully small, but I'm guessing I'd get used to it and it wouldn't be such an issue with Expose now.
I'd appreciate your thoughts!
Thanks.

FW800 does require a separate cable because it has more pins in it, and also because it is a different shape. However, you can get FW 800 -> FW 400 adapter cables which would effectively give you 2 FW 400 ports and allow you to connect both of your drives simultaneously. I do not believe you'd notice a difference between the FW 400 port and the adapted FW 800 port, but if you buy a new external drive you have the option of getting one for FW 800, which is a bit faster. If you want some real world numbers on their speed, click here for a barefeats.com comparison of the two. They also have another comparison here (but it's using a Power Mac G4, so results may vary between it and any PowerBooks).
As far as the battery swap, I'll explain it more thoroughly just to make sure you understand. I don't want you to find out it wasn't what you were thinking.
When you put the PowerBook 12" to sleep and remove a battery, it will shut off if it's not plugged in because it will have no power. With the 15" and 17", when you put them to sleep and remove the battery, they will stay powered for 15-30 seconds (and then shut off if you haven't put in a new battery). This allows you to swap the battery during the same session and not lose your work.
In addition, on these models (15" and 17"), if the battery runs out while it's in sleep mode, when you plug it in and turn it back on it will resume your previous session, like nothing had happened. This is thanks to the safe sleep feature which stores the contents of main memory on the hard drive before going to sleep, and if the computer shuts down improperly, writes them back into main memory and resumes operation upon startup. No one here would know Apple's plans. But, if past history holds true, expect a new model iPhone sometime between now & the fall.

My iTunes Library is on my computer, I have done a backup manually, and all of my music is on an external hard drive (as well as my iTunes library).

Thanks a lot Recycle bin is empty, I will move some files from the C drive to an external hard drive, then do the update, and then move the files back. Any files you recommend not moving to the external hard drive at all?

I downloaded 4.0 RC what should I do with the 4.0 Beta? remove? help?

If you downloaded and ran the installer, you will probably have beta 12 and RC1 installed, you do not need both and can uninstall beta 12. Just make sure you do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data" is you uninstall beta 12, that option will delete all of your Firefox user data such as bookmarks and passwords.

Yes, you can find it at any electronics store or online. You may even have one lying around as many devices use it.

• Which wattage adapter should I use with the composite cable with my iPad?

Which wattage adapter should I use with the composite cable when connected to my iPad while watching T. V. .

Ultimately, use the power adapter that came with the iPad. But you should use any USB based power adapter that has a 10 watt/ 2 amp or higher power rating. Look close when buying a thrid party adapter, if it does not specify 10 watts/2 amps it is a lower 5 watt/1 amp charger that will not work.

• Pre teen wants an apple ipad. is the 3 refirbished got all the bugs out or should I stick with the 2?

does the refirbised iPad 3 have all the bugs out or should I stick with the iPad 2?

There a few reports of issues, but those expereincing them are in a very small minority. I've never had issues with either of mine.
My suggestion would be the refurbished 3rd generation. A refurbished unit will have had a little extra testing and basically be a new iPad. Also, the 3rd gen has a faster processor and a better screen than the 2, and will run Siri (the 2 won't).

• A spool should be generated with the report screen which can be later used

There is a transaction ZJPVOM301, After I execute this transaction for the program, it generates a report of the sales order and gives the details like Document, Date and processing status. Now the requirement is:
REQUIREMENT:
A spool should be generated with the report screen which can be later used for tracking purpose i.e,
Transfer programs SAPMZJPV301 and ZJPVOM327 need to be fixed so that the result of processing is stored in a spool, to be printed out at any time. Currently, if there is a problem in processing, a report is displayed at the end of the program run, but it is not saved anywhere. If the user does not save a screen shot, it is very difficult to trace problem areas in this program. Plz. kindly give me the reply as early as possible.

Hi,
Use FM : RSPO_SX_OUTPUT_TEXTDATA to create spool , if report output data is available in internal table.

hi Joseph
I have defined the Sales type of BOM for the parent Item. At the of punching the A/R Invoice, all the child items appear under the parent items and changeable in terms of Numbers. and in the printed Invoice parent item details appear.
What i want that the only number of child items of parent item should appear at the row level.

• What sized buds should I use with the Creative EP-630 Earphon

HI,
I'm new here and I am a happy owner of a creative zen xtra (had it for nearly 2 years) along with a pair of creative ep-630 earphones (which I've owned for a couple of months). My question is regarding the different sized earbuds for the EP-630 earphones. From the beginning, I used the smallest buds as it felt like the best fit and the sound seemed quite good too, except for one drawback which became very apparent during quite listening sessions, the treble seemed overly harsh and loud, and in many instances painfully so even when the volume was turned down to minimum (yes, at level ). I discovered that using the EAX environment settings I was able to to turn the sound even lower (the "living room" setting resulting in the lowest volume, which I usually turn on when listening at night) to compensate. I'm pretty sure that this isn't normal, anybody else here encountered this treble overload problem? Anyway, I managed to find the larger sized buds yesterday which I forgot about as I thought I would have no need for them. I tried the medium-sized buds which seemed to solve the problem quite a bit, but the fit doesn't seem anywhere near as snug as before, and it takes some effort to jam it down my ear canals. Are these earphones simply not for me? I think this design has great potential, should I take a step up and try the EP-635 (http://tinyurl.co.uk/zvsv) or even these (http://tinyurl.co.uk/tbph)? Anybody here have any experience with the sennheiser cx300s?
If worst come to worst, I'm prepared to fork out for one of the Shure models, but I'd rather not spend so much if possible. Are there any other recomendations?

Just leave it in place and merely deactivate it using Help --> Deactivate. AAM will recognize it and it will be tied to the CCM. You can re-actzivate it using the inverse procedure after CCM has run out. Whether or not there will be any significant updates that would equal a paid point version upgrade and may prevent reactivation nobody can tell you. At worst you then would have to reinstall your original CS6.

• How should devs interact with the db?

Good day. For some time my organization has worked as most small shops do: web and software developers log into the database and create their own views, procs, etc. However we have grown to a much larger staff and have begun the process of transitioning into a more "professional" shop.
In your experience, how should web/software developers (and their products) interact with the production database? In other words, should they send their views to the DBA who will create said views? Or should they not be connecting to views at all? Should they have their own schema on the production database (and this will be the one which holds their views)?
If you say that the developers should have absolutely no access to the production db at all, then how should their products interact with the database?
I appreciate any links, advice, etc.
Thank you.
EDIT: the developers products are about 75% read-only search/reporting apps and 25% data entry.

Edited by: 893968 on Oct 12, 2012 8:39 AMThink about this. The earlier in the process that the DBA becomes a reviewer/gatekeeper, the earlier in the process you can eliminate bad design decisions. Bad design decisions can be any of the following and more:
wrong data types
badly normalized tables
use of reserved or key words for object/table/column names
reinventing wheel (especially common when needing a sequence number)
object names that make no sense and fit no pattern.
I'm sure others will chime in with more.
The point being, if you allow developers the 'create' privilege at any level, they will create things that will become a headache for you further down the road. Let them write queries and procedures ... that's their job. But not tables, indexes, sequences, etc.
And don't fall for "it's just dev, we can clean it up when we move to QA". No, they won't. At the time it moves to QA it will be "we've got too much invested in this, we can't afford to make those changes now." And regardless of what was agreed to six months earlier, management will side with the developers because they really can't afford to pay for the re-work that would have been avoided in the first place with proper division of responsibility.
It will be a painful process to bring about. Someone will have to stand firm. And there will always be low-level complaints, but it still comes back to 'if you don't have time to do it right the first time, when will you find time to fix it later?" It's part of the DBA's job to make sure it gets done right the first time, and he will need management support to maintain it.

• Should I bother with the Adobe Lens Profile Creator?

I am concentrating mostly on architectural photography these days and I need a pep talk about the "Adobe Lens Profile Creator". The process seems laborious and error prone - in other words it could end up being a waste of time and money (for the printing of the calibration charts). Has anyone used it to good effect? And with what lenses?
I do the bulk of my work with the 24mm PC-E Nikkor f/3.5 lens and I also use two older lenses - the 28mm PC Nikkor f/3.5 and (my favorite) the 15mm Nikkor f/3.5. All three lenses suffer from a small amount of barrel distortion and chromatic aberration so some correction is usually needed.
I have two specific reservations about the lens profiling process -
1. It came out with Photoshop CS5. Since then the manual controls have increased in sophistication. Can't I get pretty much the same result using the manual adjustments?
2. In my drop-down menu in Adobe Camera Raw CC there are eighty-one lenses listed - but not the three I am using! This is crazy and reflects badly on the people who designed the whole process. Who cares about perspective correction in a 600mm lens?
Anyway, I would appreciate a reply from anyone who has gone through the profiling process. Thanks.

save it and you have a perfect raw - lensprofile
Ok, but what does it mean rename and correct the content of the lcp file?
It remains a profile created from jpg source, CameraRaw could consider it like a raw lens profile but it has no more value than a jpg profile, I believe...
Anyway, for whatelse it could be useful your suggestion to modify lcp file?
Thank you for your attention

• Trouble with 10.6.8 Update - blue scream, does not start the OS when it turns on. Should I stay with the old 10.6.7?

The Disk Utility could not repair the disk neither the repairing installation of the OS X allowed me to start the OS, the blue frozen scream was still appearing. The HD erasing with the Disk Utility was the only choice, than installing the 10.6.7 OS.

I'm not entirely certain of what you've tried here, so some of this may be what you've already tried.
Get an external backup or two, made via the bootable DVD. Recoveries and repairs sometimes fail, and data loss can result.
if Disk Utility is not repairing the disk structures, then you can try an add-on repair tool (which wouldn't be my choice, but some folks try that), or you can create an external backup and reinstall from distribution. Attempting installation on a corrupt (or potentially failing) disk won't usually have desirable results.
After creating the external backup (or two), you can either replace the disk and reinstall, or can attempt to wipe and reinstall with the existing disk using the bootable DVD that came with your system (or a new Snow Leopard DVD from Apple) and particularly the Disk Utility tool that's available via the DVD Utilities menu, and migrate in your old data from the external backup. I'd then download and apply the 10.6.8 Combo Update from Apple; and not the delta update from 10.6.7 (if that's what your Mac DVD has).
The data migration is part of the installation, and will attempt to bring in your existing files and your old environment, passwords and the rest of the settings from the external disk image. (Assuming it's not corrupted.)
If you have reinstalled and have redownloaded and reloaded the combo update, then you likely have some sort of a hardware problem with your MacBook Pro; check with the local Apple Store for repairs, or whoever else you might be using for that. Or replacement, of course.
I'm going to assume that you're using the OS X 10.6 client software that arrived with that MacBook Pro and have not installed and are not running the server version of OS X Server 10.6 (this forum); the initial recovery sequence for this case is basically the same for either, though getting the various services back online after a disk corruption can be more involved. You will need to use the 10.6.8 Server combo update here, though.

• CanoScan 9000F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though it should be compatible with the Mac 10.7.2 OS.

My new CanoScan 900F scanner won't work on my MacBook Pro even though I've followed all instructions to make it compatible with the 10.7.2 OS. The USB connection isn't recognised. What else con I do?

I have a similar problem with a new CanoScan 9000F which I tried to use without any success on my desktop computer (Mac Pro 5,1) and laptop (Macbook Pro 1,2) both running OS 10.6. Problem is identical on both, viz:
• Scanning process appears to start, a message comes on the screen: Scanning do not open document cover followed by Scanning...
• This is then replaced by the message: Cannot communicate with scanner. Cable may be disconnected or scanner may be turned off. Check status. Scanner driver will be closed. 2.155.33
I've spent several hours on the phone with Canon support but having uninstalled/installed/reinstalled/updated/turned on/turned off/unplugged/plugged/restarted innumerable times, the problem is exactly the same. The scanner icon shows up in the Printer & Fax System Prefs (though without the little status lights) and shows as being connected in the USB tree. I think it's a problem with the scanner, Canon bods are suggesting the Macs are at fault and suggest I try connecting to a wintel (hawk, spit) and it's 100km to the nearest Canon service centre.
Any suggestions as to what might be the problem/s and what I might be able to do to fix it/them?
Thanks.
By the way, bought the Canon to replace a HP Scanjet 8300 which I've used for 6 years almost without problems. Any that I have had have been fixed merely by turning the scanner off then on after a 10 second rest.
