Shut down before full startup

I've read several posts with similar problems but with no avail.
My Dual G5 starts up with chimes, loads apple screen, but then shuts down. It works perfectly fine in Safe Boot, and Target Mode. The happened about a year ago and I replaced some memory and performed a clean installation. I don't know if the memory was bad or if the clean installation was the cure since I just added more memory and didn't replace any. Am I missing some thing? Why does it work flawlessly in both Safe Boot and Target Mode, but won't startup normally?
Any answers? This happened right after I did an update with manditory restart.

I discovered an icon for the instance of the program that was running. I now realize that shutting down by clicking on the usual x doesn't really shut down the instance. By clicking on that icon the instance returned and I was able to sign out.

So, you can't Install OSX to the external?
Or you can't boot from it when you do?

There are special Apple Discussion forums for Logic Studio and Logic Pro 8. Are you referring to one of these?
Has it worked before or is this the first time you have tried using it?

If Jim's suggestion doesn't work, and Logic still crashes, copy and paste the crash log into a new message here.
If you don't know how, open "Console" in your utilities folder. Click the 'Logs' icon. You'll see an item under ~/Library/Logs named 'CrashReporter' and you'll find the "Logic Pro crash.log'
Find the beginning of the latest log (they're dated) and copy and paste the complete log for that date into your message. Sometimes (but not always) there's a clue in there about a bad plug-in, or a failed attempt to load a particular resource, which might help us suggest a solution.

  • Air shuts down before boot finishes

My MacBook was going really slow and I performed a forced shut down because it kept freezing. When I tried to start up again, it wouldn't boot past the Apple logo and the spinning wheel. • My iPhone 4S keeps shutting down before battery is low

Why does my iPhone 4S keep shutting down when it shows I still have 30% battery or more still available?   For example...my last phone started shutting down at 30% and by the time I took it to the store a couple weeks later, it was shutting down at 88% (they saw it for themselves, ran diagnostics, and came up with no issues).  Getting a new phone every 3 weeks is not ideal.  I'm on my 2nd replacement phone in 2 months and it started back up yet again-shut down at 31% a couple days ago.  I charge the phone to 100% and it never fails, it shuts down at a higher percentage each day (it shut down at 35% today).  I have done everything Apple Support has suggested with no luck (including full restore).  Is anyone else having this problem?  Any suggestions?

    Hi,
I simply use the phone until I have only a little charge left. Once that's reached I'll simply let phone idle completely or drain the rest with lightweight use. We have big difference here as I can actually reach 1% rather than phone dying at 20++ percentages. Previous said, e.g yesterday phone just died after some use with 12% battery left and started again when bringing indoors. I was then able to drain the battery from 12% -> 1% before it eventually died completely. After this I couldn't start the phone anymore instead getting the charge icon constantly, so I just plugged it in at that point. After charging over night I would then consider the battery charge meter calibrated.
In your case you could test if you can still start the phone at 47%. Even if it's displaying only charge icon you could try to hold the sleep/power button longer and/or do reset with holding home+sleep/power button a few seconds. If it indeed doesn't start it would indicate battery truly is empty. It it does.. then you could try to continue using the phone hopefully hitting lower battery levels and eventually try to fully recharge it in case you'll see the battery charge percentage working any different.
Below picture shows I can still reach the  "0%" battery level and also pretty good usage times.. so the problem with me really is just that the stupid phone doesn't like cool temperatures (possibly after iOS6 upgrade)

  • Bondi iMac shuts down immediately after startup button light turns green

Is my Bondi blue baby (purchased at the midnight launch of the original iMac) finally dead?
When I push the startup button, it glows amber and the startup chime sounds. A few seconds later, the button glows green for an instant, and the power shuts off. The button then won't do anything unless I unplug the power supply for a few minutes and plug it back in.
I have tried using a paper clip to push the reset button, but to no avail. Also tried zapping the PRAM, as well as starting from a CD, but neither helped.
I know the unit has little value other than the sentimental, but my mother-in-law (who inherited it from me) is used to it and is hoping that I can bring it back to life.
Is there anything else I should try before carting it off to the recycling depot? Thanks!

    Hey H S,
This is from the service manual for the Bondi:
"The battery on the logic board controls the stored system settings,
such as date and time. It is important to note that the battery does
    not affect power at startup."
However this is from page 11 of the s. manual for the 400, SE and DV:
"7 Press the power on button on the front of the computer again.
If the computer won’t start, go to the next step. If the
computer does start, you may have a *bad battery*."
So I always check the battery. Altho' all the won't start cases I've seen where the battery was the cause did not exibit the starts up and shuts down symptom.
    Also from the manual:
"Resetting the logic board can resolve many system problems (see
the Symptom/Cure tables for examples). Whenever you have a
unit that fails to power up, you should follow this procedure
    before replacing any modules.
    1. Unplug the computer.
    2. Disconnect the cable that runs from the power supply to the
power filter board on the bottom side of the logic board/mass
    storage chassis.
    3. Press the Power On button on the front of the unit.
    4. Remove the logic board/mass storage chassis from the unit.
    5. Remove the battery from the logic board.
    6. Wait at least 10 minutes before replacing the battery.
    7. Make sure the battery is installed in the correct +/-
    direction.
    8. Reassemble the computer and test the unit."
There are protection circuits in the iMac and usually a bad PAV ( flyback and HV caps in particular) are the cause of this particular failure symptom.

  • Storm 9530 problem. Shutting Down on full battery

Hi, I have a storm 9530 which has worked alright for me for a little over a year now. Then one day my phone started shutting down on me in the middle of any kind of use. To be more specific if I am on the phone making a call, I can go no longer than 10-20 minutes before my phone shuts down on me on a full battery! It will be at 100% then when I start to do things like make a phone call, or do some texting for 10-20 minutes none stop, use an app of any sort for more than 10 minutes, basically any kind of extended  use and my phone will shut down on me. Then it will start to reboot and sometimes it will turn back on but then will have only 20% battery or other times it can't even start back up until a battery pull and being plugged into a charger. Now I have my phone almost always on a charger whenever I need to use it and it is getting really annoying having it shut down all the time. The phone does get hot at times when running these apps, music, phone call etc...What is going on here?? Has my phone gone bad? Do I just need a new battery? I am running the v5.0.0.328 (platform 4.2.0.128). Please HELP!!

Hi and Welcome to the Forums!
All of the diagnoses you have mentioned are possible. But, further testing is needed to determine which is correct. I suggest you find a known-good battery -- preferably one from a friend with the exact model BB you have who is not presenting these symptoms. Trade batteries. If the behavior follows the battery, then the battery is the cause and you should obtain a new one. If the behavior remains with you, then your BB is the cause...but what part of the BB is yet to be determined.
To find out what part of the BB is the cause, there are several possible diagnostic processes you can go through. Specifically, you need to isolate if the problem is hardware or software (e.g., 3rd party app conflicts). The cleanest way to determine that is to completely replace your device OS with a new fresh copy and leave all add-ons off. Then start putting add-ons back, leaving adequate time for usage between each add-on install. Once the behavior returns, you then know your culprit.
    Hope that helps!

  • G5 won't restart or shut down or change startup disc...

(after several updates) my computer won't restart or shut down except manually... which prevents me from changing the startup disc (where all my important stuff is). Option key during startup doesn't give me the startup disc option either.
    I'm stuck!
I verified and repaired permissions on both volumes, but can't switch back to the hard drive/OS I need.
If anyone can suggest some helpful info I'd really appreciate the help.

    Hi-
Are you using an Apple keyboard? If not, please do so while troubleshooting.
Try resetting the PRAM. Hold CommandOption+PR while starting up. Hold the keys until you hear the second startup chime, then release. The machine should then boot normally.
If this fails to return function, a PMU/SMU reset may be required.
There is a possibility of damaged files within the OS. Boot to the OS install disc, open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk on the Startup volume.

  • Powerbook shuts down immediately after startup

    Hi
Our PowerBook has started to automatically sleep immediately after starting up or being woken from its sleep.
For some reason prior to starting up it has always run through a black screen with code similar to the initial DOS code that you'd see on a Windows PC.
This code stays on screen just long enough to read a message that indicates temperature issues, however the mac is not hot in any way.
We also find that if it is shut down for a long period, it will start and run some time before giving up and going back to sleep.
Our guess is that there is a temperature sensor malfunction of some kind. If this is so, what can we do to resolve this.
    Craig

There have been many discussions about this problem in these forums, but unfortunately the search feature is currently disabled. However, if you feed Google with the appropriate keywords (e.g. PowerBook narcolepsy temperature sensor) you will find lots of material on this topic including potential cures.
