Shutdown Immediately on Battery Power

Hi everyone, I did a search but didn't find anything exactly the same as my problem so I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions.
I have a regular Macbook, 3 years 7 months old. As soon as I unplug the power cable it shuts off, every time without fail so it isn't a random shutdown.
When trying to boot up whilst on battery it dies straight away.
The battery has had 514 cycles and still has 89% capacity and is fully charged. Also, when pressing the button on the battery itself, all the lights go green, so I am assuming it isn't a problem with the battery itself.
When plugged in to the power it works fine, but the MagSafe adapter keeps falling out when it gets knocked or someone steps on the power cable and the laptop just turns off lol!
Thanks in advance,
Oliver

Well, if the battery says its charged in OSX & via the lights then I'd say it may be the connectors on the MacBook itself that, at some point, started failing.
... Well maybe not the connectors directly but possibly something that transfers the battery power to the main logic board.

When using the 2.6.27 kernel, my HP Pavilion will not boot up when using the battery power..... it won't shutdown either, it will just freeze mid-process unti I plug the AC adapter back in. During the boot up using the battery power, it freezes at the ACPI part.
This has happened on the 2.6.27-2-ARCH kernel, and all other versions of the 2.6.27 that I've built. (all rc versions from rc1 - rc7).
I wish I knew a way to fix this, I have a backup 2.6.26 kerenl on my GRUB list just in case there are no AC adapter outlets.... but it would be nice to fix this.

  • Random Shutdowns when on Battery Power

    Hello!
My Macbook Pro is about 2 years old and it seems to be randomly shutting down when the battery is at about 40%. This has happened twice in the past 3 days. Both times, when the battery was at about 35-45% and was not plugged in with an adapter the computer would shut down without any warning and wouldn't turn on again unless it was plugged in. Once it restated (the full boot up) no applications acted as if they had "crashed" (though, thankfully I was never in the process of working on something, just browsing the internet), and Firefox, when reopened, opened up all my tabs as before the system crashed. Also, once it restarted the battery wasn't depleted and still showed about a 45% charge.
To complicate matters, the computer doesn't die every time the battery reaches 35-45% (one of those days it decharged fully and gave me the reserve battery warning as usual), so it doesn't seem to be a dead cell in the battery, if I understand correctly. The first time it randomly shut down was 3 days ago. Earlier today my computer decharged fully and gave me a reserve battery warning, at which point I plugged it in. However this evening it again died on my at 45% battery life, I restarted it by plugging it in, and then as an experiment unplugged it once it had started up. In the next 10 minutes it shut down once more.
I've removed the battery and there isn't any dust or grime, so that's not the problem as far as I know.
My battery information in the System Profiler comes out like this:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 1731
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 2547
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 125
    Condition: Check Battery
So, is my battery dead or in the process of dying and I should consider replacing it? I'm still a little fuzzy on how cycle counts work, but 2 years seems like not a lot of time before replacing a battery.
Maybe my computer is overheating (I do have a case on it, but it should ventilate correctly)?
Or perhaps it has a virus? Though I have Norton Antivirus and it runs scans about 3 times a week and has not found anything ever.
I'd like to get this sorted out so I don't have to be paranoid about loosing my data in case I ever am working on something. And I'd really like to not have to plug it in all the time (I'm a college student...plugging it in everywhere on campus can be a pain in the ***).
    Thanks!!

    mybluehighways,
looking at your battery figures, your description of the computer's behaviour, and the age of the battery it is pretty clear that it has simply deteriorated to the point where it can no longer sustain normal operation.
The short answer is that you need a new battery.
The long answer is that when computers running on batteries shut down unexpectedly it is simply because the battery is not able to provide the transient power needed for a particular task or tasks. It usually occurs because the internal resistance in the battery has built up to the point where, though the battery can still store electricity, it can't deliver it sufficiently quickly to meet the demand.
It is like a car with plenty of petrol in the tank but a faulty fuel pump. It will trundle along quite happily on the flat for quite a while, but if you put your foot down to overtake or climb a hill the engine will stall because it can't get enough gas to meet the increased demand. At this point you can choose the dangerous option to keep on driving on flat roads only, and to never overtake anything or "put your foot down" to get out of trouble until the fuel pump dies completely (which you can be certain it will soon do), or you can get it fixed by getting a new one. The same applies with batteries, though you are "only" risking data loss and hard drive corruption with a computer, rather than your life!
The variation in the amount of time for which it ran before cutting out will simply be due to variations in power demand when doing different sorts of tasks. You will find, too, that the battery will cut out earlier and earlier, under lower and lower power demand situations, as it continues to deteriorate. (Once these batteries start exhibiting this behaviour you can be sure that they are well on the way out)
If you take your battery to an Apple AASP or Apple Store they can quickly test it for you, but if I were you I'd be preparing to buy a new one.
This has nothing to do with viruses or the like. It is a very common experience with the batteries in these MBPs when they are around a couple of years old. My own first battery in essentially the same model became problematic after 18 months.
    Cheers

  • Macbook Rev 2,1: Shutdown on battery power problem

    Computer in question:
    Macbook Rev 2,1 ("Late 2006")
5 months old (as of purchase)
    2,16 GHz Core 2 Duo
1 GB 667 MHz DDR RAM
    80 GB HD
    Battery in question:
Model # A1185 (A1175 was the official recall batch)
    Serial # - - - - - - - - - X36A
Problem: The battery is fully charged but the system will shutdown after about 1 or 2 seconds on battery power. This will happen if the system is already turned on or if it is starting with the power off.
When I removed the battery I noticed that while it still fit into the macbook's housing, that it was not fitting as designed. The battery was either larger or warped beyond something close to normal. I base this assertion on the fact that locking the battery into place was not smooth as expected, even with the battery being firmly held in place to line up the 2 locking tabs with the indents on the battery.
The problem has been noticed over the last day or two. It's worth noting that recently the LED on the magsafe connector has at times turned off recently as well. I actually became sure of there being a problem when I disconnected/reconnected the magsafe connector to see if the LED would relight (it did)
The battery is above its normal or average temperature, but not dangerously hot. I haven't tested with any kind of thermometer but it is worth noting.
Please take my word that the battery is fully charged and that this is not a software issue. Additionally I have updated to 10.4.10, read about similar problems (including on these forums), and pursued standard 'fixes' such as resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, and PMU, running applejack, etc. just to be certain.
Why I am posting if I already think I know the problem:
I am confident that I have correctly determined the cause of the problem. However this is my first Mac. I have helped friends with their Macs for years, but this is my first personal experience with the Apple warranty. I abstained from buying Applecare at the time of purchase, but because of my first problem I will be purchasing the extended 3 year warranty.
I am asking for advice on the best manner of proceeding. I live in Vancouver, BC Canada and I will not be making a trip across the border to Seattle just to visit an Apple store. I know from the web that there is a community of reputable Apple dealers in Vancouver.
I can't phone Apple because I have not yet bought the extended Applecare. Apple does provide a list of local authorized dealers who can handle warranty work.
My concern is that I will have to ship off my laptop (which still works perfectly when plugged in) and then wait for a predictable result. Ideally I would like to bring the macbook in, have it inspected, a new battery ordered and then keep the macbook with me while I await the battery delivery at which time I could swap them. I have read of others who have been able to do this at their local Apple store and would appreciate any advice to make this a positive experience.

Have you done the battery update?
If you have and still have problems you can call the apple contact number that is listed in the update. There is a link that has the Canadian numbers. They can help you get a new battery.
FYI in your specs you listed having a 2.16 GHz C2D. These just came out. Since yours is late 2006 it is probably a 2.0 GHz C2D.

  • Sudden shutdown of MBP while on battery power

I have started experiencing sudden shutdowns after being on battery power for 15 minutes. So far this has occurred while using Safari and Photoshop CS3. When I have checked the system log file, it has indicated "Previous shutdown cause: -103"
I have searched the web for this code and not found it yet - does anyone have an idea as to what this could refer to or what the issue might me? this is a 2008 MBP (purchased in August, 2008)

Those figures actually look fine, ze red baron.
At a maximum capacity of 5315mAh it is still at around 95% of original maximum capacity. Very different from what I expected when I wrote my earlier post!
It is possible that the figures are somewhat misleading if you haven't calibrated it in recent times, though. See http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1490 for the process.
You should also reset the SMC - see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964.
Remove and replace the battery, too.
I am wondering, though, if the battery is as good as the figures currently indicate, whether something else may be involved here. Has it ONLY shut down when using the programs you refer to, or is happening generally, regardless of what is running?
    Cheers

  • Battery power and redundant shutdown while syncing

This is mostly a suggestion for the folks at apple, but it seems that you can't just E-mail them these days.
When an iPod's battery is low and you plug it in to sync, often times it gets partially through the syncing process and then decides that it doesn't have any power to continue. So, it shuts itself down leaving you with an incomplete sync that restarts all over again when you plug the iPod in.
This is ESPECIALLY problematic when you are the situation that I am in- the one that made me come here and learn how to use discussions -restoring your iPod. I was having a few little errors in the use of my iPod. Nothing serious, mostly just that the artwork was messed up (on the iPod, and not in iTunes). So I figured 'what the heck, restore it, can't do any harm'. I plug the iPod in, hit restore and PRESTO! Beep beep, beep beep, beep beep. The iPod redundantly shut itself down saying that it didn't have enough battery power, rendering all the files that HAD loaded, useless, because the next time you try to sync it starts over from ground zero.
The iPod should be able to charge and sync at the same time. In the event that this is impossible, then the iPod should be able to say to itself "Bob, you're going to die if you keep syncing. Let's take a break and spend some time charging up the old battery." Rather than saying "Bob, you're going to die if you keep syncing. Why don't you just do that, waste the owner's time, and make the world one redundant iPod angrier."
Does anyone else have this problem? Does anyone else agree? or am I just being stupid about the whole thing?

you might try setting the processor performance to reduced
might also try checking the Activity Monitor to see if there is a run away process.

  • Power shutdown at 90% battery

I have a silver key 17" MCP bought in 2007/8 running 10.6.4. In the last month or two I have found it will shut down on battery power without any warning, often after just a few minutes. • Powerbook G4 randomly shuts down even with full battery power

I have a three and a bit year old powerbook g4 (my apple care ran out in November) that has recently - as in the last two days - started randomly powering down without warning or error messages, regardless of how much battery power I may or may not have.
A bit of history - not sure what is and isn't pertinent.
I only recently - about six months to a year ago - switched out my recalled battery for a replacement one.
I also received a new power cord under warranty within the last year - but have had no problems before.
Before my powerbook came out of warranty, I took it into my local genius bar to have tests run to see if anything was wrong that I was not aware of, hoping to be able to get it fixed while still in warranty - it came back to me with no repairs and a clean bill of health.
I was on vacation for two weeks, and while on vacation my powerbook sat - powered down - in it's bag untouched the whole time. The problems started (or at least I first noticed them) within a few days after returning.
The other day, before any of this started, I noticed that even though the power adapter was in and glowing, the battery charging icon said "not charging".
The second time the random power-off happened, I did notice that the battery icon had an "x" in it, before it shut down.
The shutdowns are not like proper shutdown processes... one minute the computer is on, the next it's not. It's like the computer thinks there's no power, regardless of the actual charge of the battery.
I use my laptop on a laptop tray to maintain airflow underneath it and reduce overheating, but even so, the laptop seems to get very hot (although this is one of the issues I was worried about when I took it in to the genius bar before the warranty ran out, and they said it didn't get any more hot than they were supposed to), and also the power connector gets very hot. I don't know if overheating might have something to do with it?
So far I haven't noticed if it has happened while I've had the AC adapter plugged in... I think it only happens if it's running on battery, but not completely sure of this.
After the computer shuts down, I can restart it immediately (though these days it is taking longer) and I do not receive any error messages.
I usually turn off my computer when I won't be using it for a while - like before I go to bed or to work.
I recently upgraded my OS from panther to leopard, but was assured that it was compatible. I've had Leopard installed for at least three months, and the problems have only just started, so it probably doesn't have anything to do with that.
Well, that's about every possible piece of information I can think of that might be at all relevant to the situation. Does anyone have any ideas about what's happening? I have a feeling the news is going to be bad and I'll probably have to get a new computer...

Here's the Apple article on how to reset the PMU:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
Possibly this might fix the problem. If not, here's a link to the MBP battery program:
    http://www.apple.com/support/macbook_macbookpro/batteryupdate/
This program does NOT apply to your battery, but I think you may recognize some of the symptoms that yours is exhibiting. It also sounds like your power adapter may be getting warmer than it should, but that could have to do with the battery being defective. But if less than a year old, the power adapter should also be under its own warranty period.
If you have access to an Apple Store, you could make an appointment with the genius bar. They should be able to evaluate both the battery and the power adaptor by swapping yours out with ones that are known to be good. If not, call Apple.
    Good luck!

  • Restarting after shutdown(run out of power)

    Device:
MacBook Pro - non Retina disp
    13" - Mid 2012
    2.9 GHz intel.C i7
    8GB RAM
    Greetings all,
So I've purchased my mac earlier this year and approximately after a month I've been noticing this weird thing happening whenever i re-use it in low power.
So I'm using my device until the battery power reaches a low percentage (around 10% and lower) and then i close the lid (Mac goes to sleep), and leave it for  some time (sometimes from night to morning and others for just couple of hours). then when i come back to use it, it doesn't start whenever i push the power button (no power). i then plug in the power cable and wait:
    - sometimes 5, 10, 30, 50 seconds
    -sometimes 1,2,4,5,10 minutes
-and sometimes more than half an hour!.
and then press the power button again. now, it does work and here is where the weird thing is happening.
once i press the power button, the screen becomes all grey and behind it is my log-in picture background with the log in password box. right beneath it there is a loading bar. it doesn't show me any loading process*. it just appears fully loaded (all bars are colored).
then it suddenly shuts down. i press multiple keyboard buttons, mouse and it doesn't respond. only sometimes when it shuts down there is light from the screen (black), but the very most of the times the devise "looks" completely shutdown.
i then press the power button again and everything goes normal, except that its slow when i type my log-in password.
once or twice the grey screen appeared again(2 times).
I've videoed the whole thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHsmNaYBWns
    * The video shows loading process, but it doesn't usually happen.

I managed to start it again, I just had to wait a while (battery power was too weak).

  • MacBook Pro C2D shuts down instead of going to sleep (on battery power)

    dear macusers,
it happended the first time 2 days ago, today again: while my MacBook Pro is inactive on battery power the screen dims, then turns black like usually, but then it doesn't go to sleep, instead it shuts down. I have 10.4.8 installed, i didn't do the summertime update. I took a look at the log files (/var/log) but couldn't find something strange. Never had a problem using my machine...
    anybody has the same issue?
    sorry for my bad english!
    john

When that happened to me a couple months ago with my Powerbook G4 it happened to be the battery itself. I did the apple battery exchange since there was a recall on my battery. I use my notebook primarily as a desktop replacement and hadn't noticed the problem until months later when I unplugged the notebook, seconds later the notebook would shutdown and even reset the system clock.
Applecare couldn't figure it out so I went to my friends house and swapped batteries to test and sure enough, when I put my battery into his computer, it shut his down and reset his clock.
    Check the battery.

  • How can i use an external screen on mountain lion when i'm running on battery power?

    Hey all:
I just upgraded from snow leopard to Mountain Lion, and i use external screen, keyboard and mouse all the time....
On Mountain Lion it's perfect when the power adaptor is connected as soon as you close the LID your external screen becomes the primary screeen and it's fully functional desktop (no mirroring or extension screen)
But the problem is when i'm in battery power, in snow leopard i used to close my lid my mac goes to sleep then i wake it up using the mouse and immediately open the LID so it doesn't go to sleep again and now i'm running on battery power with a primary external screen.
Any idea how to use an external screen on mountain lion while i'm on battery power? (i know i can use mirroring but i want just 1 primary screen and the laptop screen would be turned off )
    Thanks for the help.....

I don't believe that this will happen, however, the entire iPhone will shut down when the iPhone reaches the auto-shutdown power level. There is no way to turn that Off other that connecting the iPhone to power.

Hi and welcome to the forum!
As you can also see, the culprit is the aftermarket battery. These batteries are no good in my stance, and shouldn't be used. If I were you, I would return it and get a genuine from eBay or try to find one from the Marketplace of ThinkPads forum.
    Hope this helps.

  • Web pages won't load when MacBook Pro on battery power

My sister bought a MacBook Pro in January. She switched from a Dell laptop. Everything was great until a few weeks ago. When she would be on battery power, she would have a hard time getting websites to load with Safari. I suggested she use Firefox and see if it made a difference. It didn't.
She can try to open a webpage and it will try to load for a long time (3-5 minutes). If she plugs in the power adapter, the page loads immediately. She still has her Dell laptop and the same websites load with no problem when using the Dell on battery.
I told her to call Apple since she has Applecare. Apple sent her a new battery even though they told her they didn't think it was that. It didn't make any difference. They told her it was her internet connection, but it works fine if the MacBook Pro is hooked up to the power adapter and her Dell laptop loads internet pages without any problem while on battery power. Then they tried to tell her just to use the power adapter all the time. She told them if she wanted to be tied down to a power adapter she would have bought a desktop. (Not a very good comment by Apple in my opinion.)
She doesn't live close to an Apple Store to take it in.
This is just the weirdest thing I have ever heard of. All of her other applications (Office, Photoshop, iTunes, etc.) run just fine on battery power. It is just the internet. At first I thought it might just be secure sites, like banking, but she couldn't get MacNN or Versiontracker to load while on battery power.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

You'll probably find an Airport aerial issue. Does she find that Airport reception (a better guide is shown in Internet Connect) will drop dramatically when she disconnects power? If so contact AppleCare again and give them this information under the same case number she wuold have gotten when they replaced the battery.

  • MacBook Pro Won't Sleep on Reserve Battery Power

    Hello fellow mac-users and mac-geeks,
My Macbook Pro 2007 (2.2 GHz, Santa Rosa) was recently repaired by apple. The logic board was replaced due to the Nvidia issue. (If you don't know what that is, take a look in Apple's support documents.)
I then bought a non-apple replacement battery from http://famous-battery.com and installed it in my laptop.
Now, when my laptop is on reserve battery power, it will give me the warning message, but it won't go to sleep when the battery runs down. Instead, it will force itself to shut down as if it immediately lost power. It seems like the equivalent of holding down the power button to force a shut down.
The machine will not automatically safe-sleep, let alone sleep normally.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Your battery is defective. I had the same issue on a (authentic Apple) battery that was 5 months old.
It would get down to 0%, then instead of hibernating, it just shut off.
