Since upgrading to 10.5.7, network "fades" out

My trusty old G5 still works great for the tasks I require of it and has faithfully responded to every system upgrade until 10.5.7. When I first boot it up, my account is set to launch Camino (my "second" browser) with a special URL that tracks stats on one of my websites in real time, then the system launches Microsoft Word 2008 and SuperDuper. If I don't do anything right away SuperDuper will do an automatic backup of my data drive.
During the first five or ten minutes after startup or log in, I can see my local network, the Internet and print to my printer without any problems. After a short period, I can no longer print or see my local network, though I CAN reach the Internet without any problem.
The G5 uses wired ethernet to a Verizon Westell DSL modem (an older model, one of the worst, but it usually works fine for me). I also have other wired and wireless Macs and PCs on the local network. None of them, including both newer and older Macs with 10.5.7, have this problem.
I can log out and log back in and the local network works again for a short period. I have disabled the apps that launch at startup and they do not appear to be causing the problem.
Why do I lose only the local network and not the Internet?
Any suggestions how I can determine what else may be causing this erratic behavior?

@ satcomer & shivsetlur
Thanks for the tip on Console - though I've been aware of it for years I've never actually used it for troubleshooting.
As sometimes happens in life, when you focus on a problem suddenly the problem goes away of its own accord without any obvious action. Yesterday the local network problem continued, as it has for months since the 10.5.7 upgrade. This morning, after reading your two posts, which arrived as emails, I immediately tried my network. The computer had started up on its own as it does every morning, and after I sat down in front of it two hours after that boot, the local network worked normally. Usually I would have to reboot to see the local network, or if I saw the local network in my Sidebar, clicking on any device there would result in the name disappearing or nothing happening at all.
This morning everything worked and now, several hours later, still works.
It's a l m o s t as frustrating as the original problem. I haven't added or changed anything since my original post here.
I will update this post should the problem re-occur or, after a week or two, everything is still working.
In the meantime I will try to stop scratching my head in order to prevent injury.

  • Since upgraded phone to 2.0, cannot send out email

I recently upgraded my iphone to 2.0 (mistake!) and now cannot send out email from my iphone. I have tried deleting all my email accounts and re-setting it up on my iphone rather than syncing with my computer but it still will not send out email. I can send out email from my computer and used the same settings for both...

Also having mixed success sending mail on the iPhone, which is disappointing because I haven't had to send a lot of messages. Out of about 6 attempts, I've had two replies completely disappear. They weren't sent, they weren't in the outbox to send later. They just disappeared. One was while on my home network, the other was while I was traveling. I am very bothered that the emails aren't saved to try and send later.

  • Some of my pdf files (since upgrade to Acrobat DC reader) have greyed-out blanks. How can I get rid of this so I can read what is obliterated?

I installed Acrobat Reader DC version 2015.007.20033 on May 3 as an upgrade to the previous version (which worked perfectly). Now some of my pdf files have greyed-out blocks obscuring the text (which I imagine is being hidden by the blocks). In some cases the whole document is illegible. What has happened? How do I get rid of the problem?

Don't know what the problem was, but it disappeared after uninstalling the programme and re-installing it. (It may have had something to do with the few preference changes I made in trying to customise the appearance to look like the previous Adobe version, but if so, I'm not clear which (one?) of them caused the grey-outs).

  • 10.4.5 - mac mini can't connect to network via airport since upgrade

I've been experiencing problems since upgrading to 10.4.3. Mainly, I've noticed that I can't easily connect to our wireless home network all the time. The pattern has been that I start by shutting down my computer completely. When I start up it again, it can't connect to the network. I have to create a new profile and then it will connect. That was buggy, but at least I found a hack. However, since upgrading to 10.4.5, I can't connect to our home network at all. The Internet Connect application says that I am connected to the base station, however I can't connect to the outside world via a shell, browser or email application. Our network is secured with a WEP and the base station is a D-Link. I searched the forums for some tips, but didn't find anything. Pointers appreciated.

Be very careful about the sequence you do it. You must make sure that the airport connection is turned off (i.e. the airport menu icon looks more like a profiled eyeball without the iris than a series of lines like the towers of hanoi). Then create a new location in the Airport network preference, and make sure that these settings are there under Options
    1. Keep looking for recent networks
    2. Automatically add new networks to the preferred network list.
    3. Change the status of Enable interference robustness.
And by default, join preferred networks in the Airport location.

  • Since upgrading to Lion OS, the wifi connectivity keeps blocking up intermittently and we need to manually keep switching on and off the wifi utility to get the connection back. even locking the preferred wifi network in system preferences does not help.

Since upgrading to Lion OS 10.7.1, the wifi connectivity keeps blocking up intermittently and we need to manually keep switching on and off the wifi utility to get the connection back. even locking the preferred wifi network in system preferences does not help. This never used to happen with Snow Leopard

This is a big thank you to Rys Sinnefeldt who posted this fix.
Rys has made this fix very easy to do and takes literally 2 mins. It involves replacing the Atheros Lion driver 4.0 and replacing it with the snow leopard driver. Don't worry, Rys has made this so simple to do even I could do it and so far I have had no more wifi drops.

  • Networking down since upgrade to Leopard, even with 10.5.1

Since upgrading to 10.5 (and 10.5.1) I cannot connect to my networked print (HP7680) or see other PCs that are on my network. I can still get on the internet fine. Sometimes I can see the other PC on my network in the finder window but they come and go, very weird. I Can never get the printer to work. I use a D-link router. I have talked endlessly to Apple support and they referred me to D-link. I don;t think this is a router issuse as the other computers using the same router are working fine and I can still get on the internet. This started immeadiately after upgrading to 10.5, I'm quite sure that is the source of the problem. Any ideas on this frustrating issue?

See topic "Unable to browse Windows shares using Leopard?". Lots of information.

  • Why won't my airport express work as a network extender since upgrading to iOS 6?

I have the AirPort Extreme as my. Network and the airport express set up as my network extender. However, since I upgrade everything to IOS6 my airport express is no longer acting as the network extender. How can I fix this issue?

I have an iMac, iPad, Apple TV and Panasonic tv on my network. The apple tech when I first bought the extreme 2 months ago had me set up the extreme as the main network and the. Airport express in a different part of my home as the extender to my network so we could use the wifi outside to my entertainment area and now to get wifi outside since upgrading my devices I can only get wifi outside if to stand next to the back door.

Since upgrading to ios6, all the family's apple devices (new ipad, 2 iphone4 & itouch) are having difficulty reconnecting to the home hub wifi network. I.e, every time the lock screen comes on, the wifi connection is lost when you reopen the device and we have to reconnect through settings. This appears to be an ios6 software issue.
Is there a solution to this wifi connection issue or do we wait for a software fix?
I'd hate to think Apple is going down the Microsoft path, of passing untested software onto the user. What ever happened to Regression Testing, to ensure the existing functionality remains intact?
I bought into the Apple dream, because it was intuitive, reliable & enjoyable to use, all the things that Microsoft windows isn't.
Other issues we are experiencing are, Games are stuttering and the kids really miss the old YouTube app.
Please Mr Browett, sort these issues out.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
Another thing to try - Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.

YouTube is not now part of iOS 6.
However, you can go to the App Store and do a search using YouTube. You can download several YouTube apps: YouTube (for the iPhone, a IPad app is in work), several users  like Jasmine and YouPlayer.

  • Since upgrading to latest iOS, my WLAN can not see many wifi networks,  my friends iPhones pick them up easily. What should I do?

Since upgrading my 4s iPhone to the latest iOS , I now can not see many wi-fi locations beyond my home network.  Friends can find and connect to many wifi networks yet my iPhone does not even see them.  I can not recall prior to the upgrade whether in the settings whether turning on the wifi was shown as wifi or WLAN however the on/off is now WLAN.  Not sure what the difference is.  I totally reset the phone but no improvement.  Can any body help me?

I have tried this however it did not make a difference.  I found another user on the support pages that has the same issue.

  • Since upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open, the celluar network goes to No Service and the only way to fix it is to reboot it and this takes longer than before.  Has Microsoft taken over Apple software?

SInce upgrading to OS 8.0.2 my ipad 2 freezes, slows down, safari takes forever to open pages, cellular network goes to No Service requiring a reboot (and this takes longer than before), in summary, I now have a fancy paperweight, i used to love my ipad.  I feel as if Microsoft has taken charge of the Apple Software Division.

Sorry if someone sees this post in a different thread; Just want to get some additional exposure.. Who knows, maybe someone from Apple will take note..
The glitchy, unresponsive, slow and outright crashes are something you would expect in a less superior product.  I paid what I consider a premium because of the perceived integrity of the company and quality of their products. I am not going to go as far to say Apple ***** and so do their products; but they have to to a better job of acknowledging problems and providing recourse.  Right now, it "feels" like they don't care about existing customers.  I am not sure of the exact #'s, but I believe products like the Ipad2 represent a significant population of their existing Ipad product base.
So what is my specific rant; If Apple is going to take a long time, or worst, NOT fix the problems introduced in IOS 8 for IPAD  2, give us the option of going back to IOS 7.  I would say most everyone was extremely happy with their product running under that OS and would migrate back in a heartbeat.  By blocking this option, it feels like Apple is saying that the only recourse is to live with crappy performance, wait forever without any real news, or throw away your Ipad 2 and buy a newer model.  Right now this is 100% completely unacceptable, and I, as will thousands of others, will watch how this unfolds when we do buy new products.  Most technology products only have short, finite lifespan and I would think it is at very least very important to Apple to retain customer base in a highly competitive marketplace.  I'm done...

  • Problem with network drives since upgrading

Anyone else having issues with mapped network drives in Mavericks?
I've bene using a Windows 2012 server for ages and not had any problems with the various drive mappings, but since upgrading to Mavericks I'm constantly getting an error -51 when copying files, only a reboot fixes it, and then only for a short while. Nothing has changed on the server.
Other non Maverick machines are working fine.
    Si

Yes, same problem here and there are more reports in this forum. A patch from Apple is required, I think.

I had the same problem.  I did the reset networks on my iPhone & it did not work.  My husband read somewhere that changing the channel on the router to manual & selecting the highest available channel number might help.  I did that & it solved the problem.  I have not had the problem since.
