Sleeping a MacPro with a connected RAID array

I just got a 4T G-Tech GSpeed connected via an eSATA card to my MacPro set up as RAID 5. I manually sleep the computer at night and then power down the GSpeed. In the morning I power up the drive unit and then unsleep the computer. I think I'm saving the motor this way as well as energy.
Today I looked at the web interface GUI and noticed the unit 'rebuilding' at 11% and an hour or so later was at 13%. Did I cause this? Should I unmount the unit every night? Should I just leave everything running?
Or is this normal RAID 5 behavior after adding data?

A most excellent thank you. And a star. Yes that's exactly what happened. The above is how I slept my computer every night for the past year with an eSATA connected external drive. It seemed to work well while I was able to save the drive motor.
I know nothing of RAID drives and the instructions were most unhelpful. So I thank you.

  • 2012 MacPro with ATTO R608 RAID - Crashes

I have a 2012 Mac Pro, 4 2TB drives, and the ATTO R608 RAID controller.  The MP is running the latest version of OS X server and using all latest ATTO drivers and firmware.  Unfortunately, the server regularly crashes with the RAID controller throwing various errors ( heartbeat failed, bus reset, insufficient resources, etc ).
I have been working with ATTO Since mid-February and their latest stance is that there isn't anything wrong with the card?!
The reason I bought this ATTO card is because there were so many positive reviews, but I am not regretting the purchase.
Is anyone else having issues with this card?
    tia,
    Bill

I can't seem to find any kernal panic logs:
    /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports -> empty
    /Library/Logs/PanicReporter ->  doesn't exist
Here is a snip from the card's logs though:

  • Boot problems from RAID Array

I have recently reinstalled my system (K7N2G-ILSR).
It was working fine with a RAID array to boot (set to boot from SCSI in Bios).
The RAID array is 1 SATA drive with 1 IDE on IDE3.
I have 2 additional IDE HDDs and 2 Optical Drives (On IDE1&2).
I also have a SCSI controller with one external drive.
While reinstalling I had problems in the windows installer - after partitioning and copying files it would try to reboot, and would then come up NTLDR missing.
I initially thought it must be some confusion with my external SCSI drive trying to boot, but removing made no odds.
I ultimately had to unplug all my non raid HDDs, and it would then boot no problem at all.  Unfortunately having got it working, every time I try to plug any IDE HDD back in, it goes back to NTLDR Missing on boot (this is despite boot being set to SCSI in bios, IDE isnt even later in the boot sequence!)
I need to be able to reconnect my drives, but cant find anything comparable in the forum.
Why does it matter if I connect an IDE drive at all when it is set to boot from SCSI (RAID)?  Is my bios corrupt or something?
    Thanks for any help!
    Martyn

Thanks Noby and Richard for the advice, and sorry I have been slow to read it - I've been away.
I'm not sure I didn't do my last installation in exactly the way you describe anyway.  Still, it's probably worth another go.
I was hoping for an easy solution without reinstalling yet again, since the system is working albeit with only the RAID array connected.
Assuming the other drives do now have an MBR written to them, even if I reinstall windows without them connected, will they not still cause problems when reconnected?
Am I looking at having to wipe the drives and start again with them too?
Even if I do this, does formatting a drive wipe any MBR on it?
Is there not some way to directly edit the boot record on each drive when windows installer doesn't figure it out right?
Sorry for the multitude of questions but I have had this problem time and time again and never found a reliable solution - last time it seemed simple chance that I ever got the board working!
    Thanks again
    Martyn

I had the same problem with a hardware RAID array... I was installing Arch in an previously Redhat server.
The error I got just just before the read-only thing was related to the filesystem... (Arch was in reiserfs and /home in Redhat is ext3)
That read-only thing only happened when I was performing heavy load on the raid by rsyncing almost 300GB from RH to the new arch (No error while installing and configure a very complete system).
I though maybe it was that reiserfs wasn't good enough and I tried with no luck using jfs (the same I succesfully use in LVM in my laptop).
At the end I decided to get rid of the filesystem difference and It worked using ext3.
It worked perfectly for almost a month until last week that we had a crash copying 180GB from an USB external drive. We tried again and it worked with no problems. So in conclusion:
I used ext3 successfully but I have one crashed (after the read-only thing the system becomes useless) documented.
I know this is not an answer but I hope this help you or maybe help someone to give us a point.
P.S: The raid arrays are in the same computer (PERC6 I think) using the aacraid driver. One is raid 5 (RH) and the other one is RAID 0 (Arch),

  • Image Software on nVidia RAID arrays

Has anyone been able to get a disk imaging program to work with the nVidia RAID array?  I have tried Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost 9.0 and the old Drive Image. I have been unable get the rescue/recovery disks to recognize the RAID Array. With Acronis, it appears that they don't have the Linux drivers for the RAID array.  Ghost 9.0 is supposed to support RAID arrays, but when I try to load the drivers, I get a message that it can't find nvraid.sys, despite the fact that I supply that file on the floppy disk. I spent 1.5 hours on the phone with Symantec Technical Support and their only answer was that I would receive a phone call from a supervisor in 3 days.
I can get Norton Ghost to work from within windows, but in order to restore an image of my C: drive I need to gain access to the RAID array from the recovery disk.

I have sort of got it to work with ghost9 .
I have written a plug-in for nvraid/nvide for the bartWinPE cd made with PEBuilder 3032.
V2I Images can then be browsed with imagebrowser and files/catalogs be restored
    to arrays partitions .
The thing that does not yet work properly is the V2I protector executable cause the bart plug-in for .Net gives problems .(not sorted out this yet)
The BartWinPE cd is also of course equipped with ghost9 plugin .
So basicly the PC is booted with bootable Windows PE cd (like the ghost9 CD) ,
windows runs from cd&ram . And all the nvraid arrays is visible .Restoration made
    with V2I image browser .
    The plug-in ( INF file ) :

If the BartWinPE cd is equipped with ghost8 you should be able to restore
full disks/partitions with the *.gho extension .
But then the images must be buildt with ghost8 (from the BartWinPE cd first).
Though i have not had the time to test that yet .

  • One RAID Array Becomes Two???

    All:
I have setup a RAID 1 array with two identical segate SATA 150 drives.  This was a clean install, and everything went without a hitch.  My problem is this: after a week or so, I would boot the PC and The BIOS RAID array would say "Error--Degraded."  It took a long time to boot, but was fine and when I got into Windows, my C:\ drive was joined by a D:\drive (the second Seagate.)
I shut down, rebooted, and went into the RAID BIOS.  The second drive had magically gained its own array (non-bootable), which I deleted.  The PC booted fine with a healthy RAID array, and all was well.
Until it happened again a day later.  And again.  And again.  Basically, the array doesn't stay stable for more than a couple days.  I even swapped out the drives with Seagate as they were clicking.  The new ones are good, but the problem still occurs.
I have not experienced any data loss, but am mystified as to what is going on here...Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thank You,
    Michael Tschirret

I'm having the same problem, except I am using 4 hdds in RAID 0+1. one drive dropped out and the machine crawls now. Could it be an issue with SATAI vs SATAII? I have 4 Seagate Barracuda 120GB drives, but they were purchased over a two year period, so I suspect their firmwares vary a bit...
Any help would be much appreciated.
BTW, I have the latest BIOS installed (v1.B)

  • I would like to migrate from Aperture. What happens to my Masters which are on a RAID array and then what do I do with my Vault which is on a separate Drive please ?

I am sorry, but I do noisy understand what happens to my RAW original Master files, which I keep offline on a RAID array and then what I do with my Vault which as all my edited photos ? Sorry for such a simple question, but would someone please help my lift the fog ?
    Thanks,
    Rob

    Dear John ,
Apologies, as I am attempting to get to the bottom of this migration for my wife ( who is away on assignment ) and I am not 100% certain on the technical aspects of Aperture, so excuse my ignorance.
She has about 6TB worth of RAW Master images ( several 100 thousand ) which, as explained, are on an external RAID drive. She uses a separate Drive as a Vault . Can I assume that this Vault contains all of her edits, file structures , Metadata, etc ?
So, step by step........She can Import into Lightroom her Referenced Masters from her RAID and still keep them there ? Is that correct ?
The Managed Files that are backed up by her Vault , are in the pictures folder of her MacPro, but not in a structure that looks like her Aperture library ? This means Lightroom will just organize all the Managed files, simply by the date in the Metadata ? Am I correct ( Sorry for being so tech illiterate ).
How do I ensure she imports into Lighgtroom in exactly the same format as she runs her workflow in Aperture ?  ( Projects, that are organized by year and shoot location and Albums within those projects with sub-locations, or species , etc ). What exactly do I need to do in Aperture please to organize Managed Files to create a mirror structure of Aperture on my internal Hard Drive ?
There are a couple of points I am unsure about in regard to Lightroom. Does it work in the same way as Aperture ? Meaning, can she still keep Master Files on an external RAID and Lightroom will reference them ? If the answer is yes, how do you back up your Managed ( edited ) work in Lightroom ? ( Can you still use an external Drive as a Vault ? ) . Will the vault she uses now be able to continue to back up Managed Files post migration ?

  • Does "AirPort Disk" work with RAID arrays?

I currently have a RAID 10 array consisting of four USB hard drives all attached to a USB hub. I use it with three different macs (two leopard, one tiger) and have never had any problems. I know that you can attach multiple USB hard drives to an AirPort Extreme Base Station via a hub, but will it recognize a RAID array and make it available as a single volume over the network?

...but will it recognize a RAID array and make it available as a single volume over the network?
Why did you ask that question if the device has never appeared as multiple drives?
I understand that the AEBS is NOT a Mac.
    (a) Some RAID devices are hardware RAID devices. These devices use several hard drives but appear to the outside world as a single hard drive.
    (b) Some devices allow you to install several hard drives and then these must be pieced together into a software RAID and then appear as a single hard drive. OS X has the ability to do this.
If this device operates like the description in (a) it should have no problem connected to the AEBS.

  • Two servers with redundant connections for Sun StorEdge 3320 SCSI arrays

    Hello All,
I read in the "Sun StorEdge 3000 Family Installation, Operation and Service Manual" that it's possible to setup "two servers with redundant connections" but I never see a detailed schema to do this. I read also the "Best Pratices Guide" but this case is not mentioned. Is it really possible ?
My objective is to split a Sun StoreEdge 3320 SCSI array between two hosts with dual redundant scsi connection.
Thanks in advance for your answers.
    Francois.

At first this sounded easy, but looking at the parts listing for the 3320 seems to indicate otherwise. They're listing different part numbers for the chassis and midplane...
371-0105 chassis & midplane for JBOD
371-0106 chassis & midplane for RAID array
There are also different part numbers for the I/O boards....
    370-7655 RAID SCSI I/O module
    370-7713 JBOD SCSI I/O module
I can see what the difference is between the I/O modules, but am unsure of what differences if any are in the chassis and midplane. Seems like there's more involved here than what it would be worth to try and make it work. Perhaps the cost of a second HBA would be the lesser of two evils..........

  • Problem Installing 817 on Windows 2000 with RAID Array

I am having a problem installing Oracle under windows 2000 which has 2 x 60 GB discs configured in RAID array. When I run the setup program the cursor goes busy for about 10 seconds and returns back to normal and nothing happens !. No errors nothing.
However when I run the Object Manager in the ods_preinstall directory it starts but in the log file I get the following error message:-
    02/14/02 09:46:18 : (892) : Error in IO Control call for disk PhysicalDrive0 (Error 21)
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : The count = 28
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : The signature is 0x443aa035
02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : Error: First Partition of the disk must be an extended disk
    02/14/02 09:46:19 : (892) : Found the partition: 7
Any idea whats happening....? Has anyone seen this before. Do I need to do something special in teh RAID..?
    TIA
    Martin

    Here are some possible solutions:
    1. The installation notes state that you must be logged on as Administrator to be able to install 9i. Are you logged on as the Administrator? Being logged on as user01 with Administrator priviledges isn't the same as Administrator.
    2. Is the disk full? If I remember my installation correctly, I needed 3 times the size of the files. The documentation will tell you how much space you need.
    Hope these two questions help

  • Quicktime 7.2 and Vista with RAID Arrays

Has anybody been brave enough to install Quicktime 7.2 on their Vista computer which also has a RAID 0 or 1 array? Previous versions of Quicktime have crashed the RAID array necessitating a new computer the first time and a rebuild of the backup RAID driver the second time.
I want to have iTunes and Quicktime on my Vista machine because I have an iPhone and it only syncs with iTunes but I am afraid to try it again. I updated my BIOS and the Intel RAID drivers with a Dell technician a few days ago so I have their "current" drivers but still am not sure this will "fix" the Quicktime crashing Vista RAID array issue.
Any brave souls out there that have tried the latest version with Vista and a RAID array?
PS - I run the latest version of iTunes (7.3.1) and Quicktime (7.2) on my Sony VAIO laptop with Windows XP and it works and I can sync the iPhone there for now.
Dell XPS 410   Windows Vista   RAID 1 Array

That sounds good. Those are what i was hopeful about in your case. I haven't seen a report yet of the Intel Matrix issues being fixed by the Dell-tweaked versions of the Matrix updates. However, there have been successes reported with the direct-from-Intel versions of those updates. For example:
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4677972#4677972
(I'm thinking however, that if the PC manufacturer offers its own versions of the updates on its downloads pages for a model, those are the drivers that folks should go for with their models.)
Prior to those updates to the Intel Matrix coming out, the state of the art treatment (using the older models of the Matrix drivers/application) is discussed in this post:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4453007#4453007
But i'd be inclined to go the way you've been going with the Dell technician first.

  • LR 2.6 crashes on MacPro with Raid card

I have an 8core macpro with 32 gigs of memory.  It also has an  apple raid card with three, 2gig hitachi enterprise level drives configured in a raid 5.  It also has an SSD in the second superdrive bay with the system and program files.
I run LR2.6 and have about 50k images on the raid.  There is a total of 1.6tb of data on the raid.
When moving between images in LR (any module) very often the program will freeze and the beach ball comes out.  The only way to fix is to force quit and restart.
Has anyone had a similar problem?
    Mike

Thanks,.  But I'm actually creating a new folder from within LR's import  menus, so I can't see as that would be a problem.

  • Installing Maverick on a MacPro with OS 10.7.5 and using RAID 1 with 2 * 1TB disks. 50% used.

I have a MacPro with 2* 1TB disks running Mac OS 10.7.5 using a RAID card running RAID 1. 50% space used.
How can I install Maverick safely (i have a Time Machine Backup). The install will not use the RAID set as a boot volume.
Reading the RAID manual there is discribed a way to create a bootabkle partition and RAID 5. But it starts out as a newly purchased configuration.
I have a used configuration. I would like to reuse the data.
Is there an installation section for my type of configuration?
    THKS for all help.
    Regards
    Reint

I have found the answer myself already.
    1.     Take a full backup on a medium which also will restore.
    2.     Start your system with original start-up DVD.
    3.     Start RAID pgm. Dissolve your current RAID set.
    4.     Create a new RAID set with a logical volume on it.
    5.     Restore from your backup your current system.
    6.     Install Maverick on this system.

  • Is it possible to record data directly from PXI-5112 scope card through PXI bus to SCSI RAID array (connected to PXI-8210)?

    Colleagues,
Is it possible to record data directly from PXI-5112 scope card through PXI bus to SCSI RAID array (connected to PXI-8210)?
Which will be the maximum transfer rate for continuous data recording?
    Thank you,
    Sergey
    Sergey

    Sergey,
The PXI-8210 can connect to any SCSI 2 compliant device. If the RAID controller is SCSI 2 and appears just like a hard drive in the operating system, then you can send data directly to the RAID array. The problem is that the driver for the PXI-5112 does not yet support continuous acquisition. The on-board 16MB or 32MB buffer stores the data until the entire acquisition is completed. Once the acquisition complete, all of the data is transferred from the on-board buffer to the hard drive. After that happens, the NI 5112 is ready for another acquisition.

  • Scratch disk with two RAID arrays

I have 2 500GB disks in a RAID0 array for Windows / programs and another 1T RAID1 array for data. Where should I place the scratch disk?

Should I create a dedicated partition on the RAID0 array for the scratch space?
Please do yourself a big favor and do not do any partitions. They will only slow things down, as the OS thinks it's 2 physical HDD's and will tell them (the two logical HDD's), that it needs data at the same time. Remember, it's one physical HDD (even though it's striped, it's managed as one.
    Now, here are my thoughts:
1.) RAID 0's will speed things up. However if one of the two drives fails, ALL is lost. I do not recommend using a RAID 0 (any flavor of 0), for the system/program disk. If you do, be sure to have a great backup scheme and use it.
2.) Now, as of CS, PS no longer has a real limitation on how much HDD space it can use for Scratch Disks. Going back, on was limited to 4GB and had the ability to set 4 of these. Back then, having say a 32GB SCSI HDD, and doing some 4GB partitions made sense. Now, it does not.
I'd get a very fast, smaller system HDD. Then, you can use either of those RAID arrays for your media, and the other for your Scratch Disks. Having a dedicated hardware RAID controller will speed things up too.
On my system, used almost exclusively for PS, AI, InDesign, Painter and Video editing, I have 4x 1TB SATA II's for Scratch Disks, 2x 1TB SATA II's for still & video and audio. My system drive is a 500GB SATA II. Were I building now, I'd probably go with RAID 0 for the media and also a RAID 0 for my Video Exports, with non-striped 1TB SATA II's for my Scratch Disks.
    Just some thoughts,
    Hunt
