Sleeping MBP unresponsive...why?

My MBP works just fine, but my solved question poses another.
I typically let my MBP sleep instead of booting it from scratch every time. Well, recently, I realized that it was getting very difficult to wake up; I'd press any number of keys, but my MB would only revive after around two minutes or longer. Very strange.
I eventually realized that the problem was: I was plugged into a headphone cable. When I left the cable unattached, my MBP revived within seconds. Problem solved.
But the question is: why? The offending headphone cable was about thirty feet long. Is there a limit for a mini cable for the MBP?

Log a bug with Apple, with whatever details you can provide.  In the interrim, consider acquiring a router; either a repurposed x86 box running open-source networking or gateway software, or a commercial device.

  • MBP Unresponsive after waking from sleep

Hey Guys, I have found some similar discussions but nothing has helped me so far so I figured I would ask this in my own words and see if anyone has a solution.
Occasionally (up to once per day) I will try to wake my MBP and it will be completely unresponsive, forcing me to force-shut-down using the power button. When this happens the fan will be running at a high speed and the entire computer will be very hot.
This may have something to do with using second displays as this seems to happen frequently after using displays, however, it seems to happen without using secondary displays as well.
Please help! This has been going on for quite some time and it is driing me crazy!

Thanks, Linc.  I was worried that since this was a refurbished computer, it was dying again.  Makes sense, although alittle annoying that nothing really warns you this is happening.  I almost cycled power the first couple times it happened, thinking it was stuck while waking.

  • Mirrored Display. How to sleep MBP display without closing LID to keep the machine vented?

I just got my hands on a 15" MBP and I currently have a third party Display that I have connected to my Display output port. Mirrored display, and tried the clamshell mode but machine got quite hot by running in it that way. I was wondering if there is any way to keep the lid open while the mirrored mode on the external Display still runs?
Also, if there are any third party software that does give me flexibility as to which display to sleep and such, and at least have control over the display output options, that would be a gem. Appreciate it if anyone has that info?
Thanks a lot for taking time to help! Happy holiday and a great year to come for all!
    Miles of smiles,
    Jimbo

    Captfred,
I've tried what the article suggests but it only seems to work if you want to wake the computer when it is sleeping or the screen saver is on.
What I am trying to find out is how to start the computer when it is turned off without having to open it. I would imagine that there would be some key combination on the keyboard or perhaps a way to program the on/off button on the side of the Apple external display to do that.
    Any ideas ?
    Thanks in advance.

  • I upgraded to Mountain Lion. Now I have trouble waking it up from sleep mode. Why?

I upgraded to Mountain Lion on my MacBook. I am now having trouble waking it up from sleep mode. Does anyone know why or how to wake it up. I try tapping the space bar, trackpad & other keys. Sometimes I think it's never going to wake up.

I'm not certain but my new MBA 13...when in sleep mode comes back on from a black screen when I simply click on the left mouse button. Also, one time I did a SECURE EMPTY TRASH on files that totalled more than 1GB and it took so long that the fan kept increasing in speed so I pressed on the POWER button and the MBA shut...I was able to boot up with no problem. As a rule, I now only do secured erases for trash bin data totalling 500mb or less...anything above that gets a regular erase (dump).

  • Video podcasts crashing MBP? Why so?

System: MBP 2.4GHz with Tiger v10.4.11 and the latest iTunes 7.6.1 and QuickTime 7.4.1
All media are stored on an external FW SATA HD.
Problem: Playing most video podcasts crash or freeze my MBP! Doesn't happen to music videos, TV shows and movies. Why is that so? Driving me nuts! Strangely, no issue with a Leopard system.
Tried: Reinstall iTunes, QuickTime and apply Mac OS X v10.4.11 combo update. Repair permission and run maintenance. The problem still persists.
    HELP?!

I've been researching this problem since February and still haven't found a fix. A similar problem has been reported by people in Second Life.
    I noticed in my case:
    - if I'm looking at the video podcast in the album artwork window there isn't a problem
    - if open it in a separate window and don't move my cursor over that window, I'm fine
    - if I move my cursor rapidly over the window and don't leave the cursor over it, it will freeze the video for about 20 seconds and then start again
    - if I move my cursor over the window and leave it there it, it will lock up the system and I can't Force Quit or do anything else but a cold boot (if I was hearing sound it will continue repeating the last sound until I power down).
So far what it looked like was a video driver issue. Something like the GeForce not handling Open GL or maybe a problem when it has to overlay the video play control on top of the video window.
This is my first Mac and I was very proud of its resilience but with this bug, I'm afraid to let people touch the thing and have them find out how easy it is to lock up the system.
So stmidnite, have you noticed that this happens only with video podcasts that are tagged as new? Does it happen even when your cursor isn't over the video window?

  • After waking from sleep, MBP screen shakes

Curious if anybody else has seen this problem. Periodically when my MBP (santa rosa) wakes from sleep, as best I can describe it, the screen shakes. Mostly vertically, I think. It's a behavior that looks like a loose connection, but it's so closely tied with my installation of Leopard, that I suspect it's a software issue.
    Anybody else?

I dont know what exactly you mean by "shaking" but what I just experienced here a few moments ago sounds kinda similar. My MBP, running on battery, went to sleep for two hours and when I woke it up, the screen went nuts. The brightness was irregular throughout the screen and the image started "flashing" intermitently. Think of a poorly-tuned TV channel. Sounded like what you said...a loose connection, except that it is probably not. I had to to a hard reboot. Toughts from anyone?

  • Panasonic P2 Cards slot, gone on the new MBP? Why?

I will like to buy a MBP but, I need the slot for the Panasonic P2 Cards which the old Power Book has... Would they be adding this feature again in the next model? any ideas? Why would the take it out?
    Thanks!
    G5 2.3Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

When I heard about the ExpressCard replacing the PC Card slot in the MBP, my first question is - will there be a CF adapter for the new slot? My next question is - how about P2?
The answers are to buy a FW/USB CF card reader and P2 Store Deck if I ever use the technology. Then again, there's FireStore. Sigh...

  • AEBS and AExpress N ethernet bridge disconnects when I sleep MBP??

Hi all this is my first post but im a long time mac user having grown up in a mac house.
anyways im an it guy by profession and ive been working at this issue to no avail so I figured I might come on there and see if any of you have experienced this issue
the issue I get is that when I close/sleep my MBP it disconnects the Airport Express ethernet bridge clients
    NETWORK Info
I run a small business from my home thus I have FiOS (yay 20/20) with a block of 13 static ips that i distribute via DHCP and MAC reservation to allow remote access to my network as well as keep things consistent.
I currently run cat6 from my FiOS ONT to my Airport Extreme Base Station, which i use on a strict N only in 5ghz range as my area is flooded with b/g networks but no n networks (yay again).
I recently acquired an N Airport Express to provide a wireless to ethernet bridge thus extending my network to my entertainment center (ps3 xbox etc)
(extra info: im using n here because i found that b/g limits my internet connection speeds to 7-9 mbps where as my connection is capable of 20. On my n speed network I can get my full bandwidth wirelessly, yes I know there is obviously some bandwidth and throughput loss by going wireless but not as much as a b/g network was giving me)
    NETWORK SETTINGS
On my n network I distribute a range of IP addresses from my static block. I have tried a few different dhcp lease times which definitely improved my initial problem which seemed that it would log me out when the key rotated every 20 min. Currently ive bumped that up to 1 day (i know not as secure id like to set it back to 20min but it seems that when it rotates that it logs me out) and haven't had that specific issue revolving around key rotation again. ive tried the WDS, Extend a network and join a network options with no real difference in behavior when I shut my laptop and for example my GF is playing rock-band online she gets disconnected also worth noting that it seems there is an intermittent DNS issue on the express ie cant find time server even though at that time ethernet clients are able to connect and get dns response
Below is my log from my express base station when the disconnect occurs

Does anyone know how to make the MBP sleep? Mine has never slept, it wakes up after some minutes and stays on all the time with the lid closed.

  • Mbp unresponsive after 30s - please help!

I have a mid 2009 17" mbp that has recently (last 48 hrs) decided to become unresponsive to everything i do.
I have had to force shut down because everything freezes up.
the beach ball comes on when I hover over the main applications bar, the upper finder bar and any application/window that I have managed to open in the 30s that everything works.
I have erased the internal HD and reinstalled mac os x to no avail.
I have reset the PRAM and checked the disk utilities using the install disk and everything logged as ok...
None of the other threads, here or elsewhere, have been helpful to me
I am at a complete loss here as to what to do now

if you reinstalled your OS and the problem continues, it sounds like a hardware issue. it might be best to contact apple or take it into a store - http://www.apple.com/support/contact/

  • How is closed & sleeping MBP supposed to react to pressing Play on Remote?

Hi. I have this question: How is closed and sleeping MacBook Pro supposed to react to pressing Play (or other buttons) on the Remote?
I think that once it started playing music from iTunes even with closed lid, and I was thinking how clever it was. But now it only plays for few seconds and then goes back to sleep. I don't understand this.. it should either keep playing or do nothing.. why this weird behaviour?
    Thanks in advance for replies.
    Regards
    Milan

The machine is intended to sleep whenever its display is closed. I agree with you that logically, it either shouldn't wake up at all when it's closed and called upon by the remote, or it should wake up and stay awake. What it does (and mine does exactly the same thing, so I don't think yours is misbehaving) doesn't make very good sense, and suggests that there's a minor fault in the design — whether hardware or software, I'm not sure.
But for the machine's safety, it's much better for it to go right back to sleep than to stay awake and keep running. If it did the latter, you might be tempted to pick it up and slip it into your carrying case or backpack while it was still running. That would almost certainly cause it to overheat in a very short time, because it would be unable to cool itself in there. So the way it behaves, while not strictly logical, at least errs in favor of self-preservation.

Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    https://support.apple.com/kb/TS1367
    Symptoms
If your Macintosh computer won't turn on, here's how to troubleshoot it. Please keep in mind that although your computer may display similar symptoms that prevent it from showing video, this article discusses what to do if the computer won't turn on, meaning that when you press the power button:
You don't hear a startup chime.
You don't hear any fan or drive noise.
The power button or power indicator doesn't light up at all.
If your computer doesn't display any video, it may display one or more of these similar symptoms when you press the power button:
You may hear a startup chime.
You may hear fan or drive noise.
You may see the power button or power indicator light up.
If any of these conditions occurs, see Troubleshooting: My computer has no video instead.
    Resolution
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Make sure that the power cord is plugged into a working wall outlet, and that it's properly connected to the power adapter. (To check if the wall socket is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.)
Make sure that the power adapter is properly connected to the power port on the side or back of the computer.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged into the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
Reset the computer's PMU, SMC, or PRAM. Refer to the instructions for your model:
    Portable (iBook or PowerBook)

  • When iMac Sleeps, AirPort Disconnects: Why?

I took delivery of my iMac yesterday (my first Mac), and my problem is this:
After awakening the iMac from sleep, the wireless Internet connection is lost and I have to go through the few clicks to select the wireless network, etc. It's then reconnected fine.
Shouldn't the wireless Internet connection be maintained through sleeping?

Make sure that there is only one choice for your Mac. Old networks that you setup and old preferred network passwords can confuse your Mac, especially if you migrated old user accounts when you originally setup this Mac.
The old networks can be found in System Preferences>Network>Air Port. Press the Advanced button. In the AirPort pane you will have to highlight each network listed and remove it by clicking the "-" button below.
Old preferred network passwords are in your Keychain. Go to Apps/Utilities/Keychain Access. If you sort the passwords by kind they should be labeled such as Airport Network Password.
When you designate a wireless network as preferred, the password is saved to the keychain. So if you make sure that your iMac only has only one preferred network from which to select, upon startup or waking, it should ignore all the other wifi networks drifting around your location and make a beeline to its one preferred choice.
I hope something here applies and is helpful.
