Small horizontal opening towards the top of the iPhone's face??

I do know that information is SOMEWHERE...
I have kept the original (out of the box) clear, smooth screen protective "skin" on my iPhone. It looks good and is very clear; it prevents smears & scratches on my phone.
However, I do notice that it blocks the small, horizontal (about 1/2 inch across) opening near the top of the screen: what is it for again? Does it have to do with my phone not exhibiting enough volume in the phone talk/answer mode?
Thanks!

Well, not really. I am just curious about things not totally clear, or just merely puzzling.
To wit: p.12 of the iPhoneUserGuide pdf manual shows a detailed description of the
phone different areas, functions, features... and openings.
Speaker and Microphone are pointed out via arrows (bottoms), while everything else on the unit is precisely described... EXCEPT that slit close to the top. I suspected that it would be a conduit for sound, but thought of asking nevertheless. Oh well, that's what happened when ones reads the f... manual too close.
Thanks for the reply. I'll just replace the original plastic protective film with the one I purchased. The fir (bubbleless that is) probably won't be as good!
