Small/medium business network upgrade

Hello,
I have been asked by a friend to do an upgrade to his business network.  I would appreciate any help and suggestions.
There are several things which need to be accomplished:
Implement a VPN solution for remote access
Increase bandwidth to support new IP security cameras, which will send video to a video recording device
Extend the network farther out into the shop area, in order to connect cameras and add computers to the network
The current setup consists of
A 24 port 10/100 switch in the main office area.  15 of the ports appear to be in active use.
A consumer-level ADSL termination unit, currently with 6/1 ADSL service
A 10/100 switch half way towards the back of the shop facility, apparently acting only as a repeater to overcome distance limitations
An 8-port switch and Wi-Fi access point in a small office area in the shop, which serves a couple of computers and machines.
So far, we have come to the following conclusions:
A gigabit backbone between different areas of the plant is something we need to do
A fiber link from the front office to the back, eliminating the need for signal boosting mid way, would be a good option.
We would like the VPN to be accessible from mobile phone/tablet devices as well as personal computers.
We would like be able to do some sort of traffic shaping so that a large upload or download from one computer to the Internet cannot slow everyone else to a crawl.
We will be adding a 2 or 3 computers and eventually 6 or 7 IP cameras in the back shop and probably similar number in the front of the shop (close to the office).
I would like to go with Cisco equipment if it can fit within the budget.  My experience has been you get what you pay for with the cheaper gear.
I would appreciate any ideas on how best to do this upgrade.  Thanks!!!

Yes, sorry.  The first time I posted, I missed the part where it said the post must first be approved by a moderator.  I don't see any option to delete this one, but a moderator is certainly welcome to delete this duplicate.

  • Small business network issues!!!

I am at my wits end with this problem:  We have a small business network consisting of 6 Mac Pro computers and 2 Windows PCs.  Everything was working fine until we needed to replace one of the WinXP machines with a Windows 7 machine.  None of the Macs can see the PCs unless they physically type in the IP address (they used to show up in the finder as the computer name).  None of the PCs can access the Macs at all and now shares on one of the Macs are no longer visible by the rest of the network.  Any help would be appreciated.
    Computers:
    Mac Pro 10.7.5
    Mac Pro 10.6.8 (x4)
    Mac Pro 10.5
    Windows 7 64-bit Professional
    Windows XP Professional
I have made sure that every computer uses the correct workgroup name and that all file sharing is enabled.

I've seen it take 45 minuyes for a PC to announce it's name on the network, just sayin'.
Anyway, does the PCs IPs ever change?

Setting up a small business network using mac and windows??

Ok that sounds great. What is your actual question as it relates to AirPort networking? Is it: Can I set up a wired/wireless network with an AirPort base station that support multiple Mac & PC clients? If so the answer is yes.
If, instead, it is how to I configure an AirPort network to support a small business you will have to provide more details on both your networking & computing equipment in order for any of us to help you.

  • CS6 for "Home use" or "small and medium business"?

    Hello,
I'm interested in purchasing Photoshop CS6. I'm self-employed and I need an installation only for one machine, but for commercial use. Do I need to buy Photoshop for "small and medium business" or will "Home use" be sufficient license-wise?
    Thanks,
    Alicja

    There are no such options.
There's a standard commercial license or an Educational license.
Your only decision is whether to buy Photoshop CS6 Standard or Photshop CS6 Extended (3D and few other features).
You will be fine with a commercial version of Photoshop CS6 Standard.
All licenses allow you to install and activate the software on up to 2 computers.

    Hi Guys,
it is as simple as that:
I cannot configure yahoo small business after upgrading to Mavericks Help needed
    Thanks

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

I have no idea if I have posted in the correct area as this is my first forum post within the apple support community!
I have been using a 21.5" imac running 10.6.8 for the past 5 years to run my small home based architectural design business. I have been using the internal hard drive & backing up the necessary data to a simple usb external hard drive. I am now looking to firstly purchase a new imac 27" retina and purchase new autocad lt 2015 for mac software. I am looking to have another imac (my old mac) running in conjunction with the new mac. I want both macs to be able to access the same data and am slightly unsure what is the best way to achieve this.....As my old mac is currently only running snow leopard and an old version of autocad for mac 2011 it wont run on any more recent OS. Essentially i believe I have 2 main options with this.... (1) I Accept that I have to purchase 2 no. autocad lt 2015 licences @ a cost of £2300. Or option (2), I only run autocad on the new mac as this will be the primary station and the old mac used for primarily for admin & accounts. I have also recently discovered that it is possible to rent autocad licences for £300p/a which may also be another option (3)!
I previously had a problem where my hard drive failed on my mac & lost all data on the internal hard drive, luckily I had been backing up all data regularly to my external hard drive and now loss occurred! Obviously with any new system I want to ensure that my data is safe!
I currently utilise about 250GB of data for business operations but this will obviously grow with time.
In the future I would like to have the option of potentially being able to access the network data remotely via macbook pro whilst abroad although at this stage this really isnt my primary objective. Although I believe I could achieve this through apple remote desktop.
I suppose I should provide some information with regard to the required speed of the system...I regularly open 50-100 photos at the same time totalling around 250-500MB. I would like the system to be able to handle this fairly easily.
I have been trawling through forums and to be honest they are totally confusing me. I have also spent time on the phone to the apple business team and have also discussed my objectives with a member of the apple team in store.
There have been various options advised to me and I really do not know which is the most appropriate route forward.
1 - Using a mac mini as the file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the mac mini to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
2 - Using a time capsule as a file server and linking the 2 mac devices to this and backing up the TC to an external hard drive to ensure no loss of data.
3 - Using the new mac hard drive and linking the 2 macs via thunderbolt (old mac does not have thunderbolt and so I guess I would need another new mac?!) and then backing up the data to a time capsule.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!

    Hi sblemings,
    Welcome to the community.
I think with your scenario you should ask yourself, how complicated do you want the setup to be and how much time would you have to be able to resolve an issue should one occur with this setup.
All the options that have been advised would work but they come with complexity and therefore time.
4 - Using a RAID based server and linking the 2 no. macs.
Sorry to ramble but any advice really would be greatly received!
    option 1
Would be a way to achieve what you want, it would centralise your files and you would only need to backup your file server (as long as all the files you wanted backed up were on it). This could be achieved either using the client and sharing various folders or using Server which would give you more options than you would possibly need.
    option 2
This is exactly like option 1 except that you wouldn't have to administer another mac however you may limit any future growth.
    option 3
This option I probably wouldn't pick, you could achieve this with firewire and use a firewire to thunderbolt adapter (saves you having to buy a new iMac)
    option 4
This option would, depending on your RAID level, give you disk redundancy but remember you would still need to back this up, as RAID is NOT a backup solution.
I would also ask is there a pressing need to keep the old iMac in service and complicating things by having a server / NAS? Could you not just transfer all your information over to this and continue with the one backup? I would say that doing it this was would be the simplest way of achieving what you want from what I can take from your question.
As for remotely accessing your data, if you have the right hardware the way to achieve this would be to use a VPN and connect back to your data. However a potentially easier way for you ,would be to use a service like logmein or teamviewer to connect back.
Hope this helps, and by all means any questions please ask.

How to set up a basic file sharing server for my small architectural business?

  • It's s small local area network I'm looking to create.

    Hi
Can some one point me in the right direction please.
I have 32 G5 machines running latest OS I'm fed up with my IT department not being able to help with the smallest of issues.
I want to be able to connect all my machines together have a shared folder system be able to get work of one machine to another create accounts for all staff and have a reasonable shard volume some place to hold backup files. Not much to ask is it.
I need a server of some sort and some way of managing the server, but which one and how big.
It’s s small local area network I’m looking to create.
Just start me off in the right direction some one please.
Or can I use one of the G5’s to manage all the machines with server software installed on it? If I can how do I join all those wires to one Mac?

    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi jegoadby,
Welcome to the forums... you are in the right place.
I suggest OSX server is what you need. An Xserve would be ideal. You could just buy the OS X Server software and run it on one of your G5's (though that Mac would need to be dedicated to the job and not used by anyone for day-to-day work).
Your strategy will depend on the current IT architecture of your organisation, and how much you need to play within that architecture, eg. DHCP, DNS, Printing services. Easiest for you woud be to create your own network of just your Mac machines & server.
To give you an idea of what this will involve check out Appendix B, 'Mac OS X Server in a Small Business' example, of the Getting Started PDF at:

Please come back with any specific questions.

  • Re-activating Premiere 9 elements after network upgrades - Can't!

    Hi there,
Bit of a faux pas but I had Premiere Elements 9 installed on the 2 machines I (personally) use at work. A Month or so ago we did a massive network upgrade and my machines were rebuilt. I wasn't aware at the time that I had to manually deactivate the software and so on re-installing my serial number is no longer valid as the activation software still thinks the program installed on 2 other machines...neither of which, of course, exists any more.
spent 25 minutes on the phone waiting to speak to someone but i have a job....thoughts/help?
    Thanks
    M Wells

    Hi M Wells,
You will have to get in touch with an Adobe support representative to get this fixed.
I would advise you to get in touch with chat support in case you are unable to get through to anyone on the phone.
Please click on this link to get to the support page:
On the page, click on "I need help activating or deactivating my software"
You should see the "Chat Now" button after a few seconds. In case all chat support agents are busy, please wait for a few minutes on the page and the chat button will appear once an agent is free.
After you connect to a support representative, explain the situation and they will be able to assist you right away. Please have the Product Serial number handy as you may be requested to provide that.
    Thanks

  • "Business Network" and "Without a Domain" -- Consequences?

In Windows 7 SP1, during installation (or later in "Control Panel\System and Security\System," under "Computer name, domain and Workgroup settings," click "Change Settings," than "Network ID") you get the following
    choice:
This Computer Is Part of a Business Network; I Use It to Connect to Other Computers at Work.
This Computer Is a Home Computer; It is Not Part of a Business Network.
If you choose the former, you get the further choice:
My Company Uses a Network With a Domain
My Company Uses a Network Without a Domain
"Home Computer" is straightforward and allows you to set up a Workgroup or a Homegroup.  "Business Network" followed by "Without a Domain" appears to behave the same way but is **reputed** to prevent homegroups (which is
desirable) and in general to provide a higher level of networking security.  Is either of these assertions actually true?
Suppose you choose "Business Network," then "Without a Domain," or alternatively, you choose Home Computer," and in either case you continue through the wizard to the end.  You have to restart, so you assume some significant
changes have been made.  Yet if you then go back through the Control Panel procedure given above, you find that "Business Network" and "With a Domain" are pre-selected, causing you to wonder if these changes persist.
So my main quandary is this:  Do these choices produce persistent effects that can be seen in one of the Policy Editors (or even the Registry Editor)?  If so, how do you find, and if necessary adjust, them?
Similar questions have been asked at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/difference-between-home-network-and-business/85597e92-2b38-4d2f-b7b3-6f45f3c750d5?tm=1390436195902, at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/home-vs-business-network-choice-can-you-get-back/74a872bf-18d4-437b-99b2-ded5fa60df4e?tm=1418982314037
and at http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-security/how-to-setup-windows-7-as-a-workgroup-that-is-not/43f7a288-50cf-444e-aff8-efc7588251f8) but apparently not definitively answered.  Can somebody here do so? -- JCW2

    Hi,
This choice could affect many registry entries. It's hard to figure out every entry.
    For example, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Group Policy\History
there is Machine Domain entry stand the current domain name.
When you choose any one of them, after restart, registry entry will adjust this new settings.
In addition, Business network without domain and home network is different. since the domain network have some security restriction for all domain network no matter if you are in doamin or out of domain.

  • Is Designer suitable for small/medium projects ?

In you opinion, is Designer suitable for small/medium projects with small / medium databases ? Let's say arround 20 tables ?
Or we should better create those tables directly , without ERD, using SQL scripts and/or JDeveloper, and also using JDeveloper for creating diagrams...
Seems easier for me, at least when small changes are needed on the database (like adding a column), and with Designer, is a lot of wasted time to change the ERD, to apply the changes on phisical model, etc...
    What do you think ?
    Thank you

Yes Designer is sutable for small and medium projects.
JDeveloper has a UML modeler but does not have the full DB functionality that Designer has.

  • Network upgrade completed and no internet

Well BT emailed me are pleased to tell me that my network upgrade has been completed on the 22nd June. They actually did it 21st June so good on them for doing it early. However, since this time I have had no internet connection. My BT Home Hub connects at 10,800 downstream with an upstream of 888 kbps but I get nowhere on the 'net. BT Home Hub is v1.00, so I have wireless, data and broadband lights no internet light.
Three BT engineers have been scheduled. First said, issue is at the exchange and he would pass the call over. Still not working when BT India called back. An engineer was scheduled Friday...no show. An engineer was scheduled today...no show.
So, one upgrade, 3 engineers, umpteen minutes on the phone and still no internet connection. I am so very annoyed! Trying to be civil to the poor BT India people but slowly going mad.
Can a BT forum mod help me before I take a gun from my cabinet and either point it at the router or at my head?
EDIT: Yet another engineer booked in for Wednesday.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I know exactly what's wrong with your internet connection because it took us over a week to get ours reinstated after the 'Retail Migration Team' had kindly updated our network.  What they are keeping quiet is that the old white HomeHub (which we had) is not compatible with the network upgrade so it will never work while you have the old hub.  Trying to make the call centre in India understand what was wrong was **bleep** - even though I have to say they are very polite and do try to help, but they can only follow their technical script.  We knew for a fact that our equipment was all working ok and it was to do with the upgrade.   An engineer finally called and he was on the ball enough to know that, after thoroughly checking us out, our HomeHub was the problem and I wonder if BT knew that the old hubs may have this problem but don't rush to help you if they can save the money by having to replace your hub to a nice new black one!  The engineer instructed to phone the call centre again and tell them that they had to send me a new hub.  I did ring and by now, probably because of me moaning, my call was diverted to the BT Priority Care Team who, once they were involved, sorted out it all out.  They said that my hub was not compatible and was out of warranty as we had had it so long.  I told them I was not going to pay for a new hub  as their network upgrade had caused this.  They totally agreed and within two days a nice new black hub arrived via Royal Mail, I plugged it in and hey presto, we have internet.  The BT Team then called every day for a week to make sure we had no problems.
So don't be fobbed off with engineers and call centres telling you to reset buttons etc etc.  YOUR HOMEHUB does not work with the new upgrade and it is for them to replace it with a new one with no payment due from  yourself.  Hope this all helps and stick to your guns.
