SMC problems
My Mac Pro is having power management problems. When I put it to sleep, and then wake it up, it restarts. Also, it occasionally wakes up on its own.
I've reset the SMC and PRAM twice now. Both times it seemed to help for a period of time, but then the problem returned.
Is it time to call Apple, or is there something I can do? The computer is still under warranty, so if this is going to be a long-term problem I want to take care of it now.
Take a minute and look at threads with "restart" or "wake from sleep" or such.

- this was finally posted yesterday on MacFixit, one of my favorite sites for troubleshooting articles.
I would call, explain, document, and try to move it up a level. Not everyone you walk to is necessarily aware, and it may seem a lot (you tend to see problems here mostly) but there may be newer hardware builds that have minimized or reduced the problem... beyond just never letting it sleep. Seems it may sleep or work fine for awhile and then start over again, 2 hrs seems to trigger the restart. but so far 10.5.2 didn't help, and whether it even can be fixed via software seems unlikely.
I've never liked EFI or SMC firmware fixes, but that could be one route.

Screen/smc problem, freezing
i have an Intel imac and yesterday it froze with a bunch of small blue squares showing up all over the screen. Did a force reboot and couldn't get past the user log in screen. Looked around a little, seemed like it might be an smc problem so restarted the computer holding the power button while plugging in the power cord. This got it running but with the fan making a lot of noise. The computer was actually running great like that, faster than normal. But once I got everything backed up, I shut it down and unplugged the powe cord to, I guess again, reset the smc back to normal (not sure if that's exactly how it works). Restarted the computer and it worked ok for a while but then froze again and I'm now in the same situation. So seems like a rather serious problem. What do I do? Can I just run iT in the high fan mode Permanently? Is this a hardware problem? Cost estimates on fixing it?
thanksThis is the proper way of doing an SMC reset: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC) - Apple Support
Resetting the SMC for Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve
Shut down the computer.
Unplug the computer's power cord.
Wait fifteen seconds.
Attach the computer's power cord.
Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.
+ unplug any peripherals, which I wish they would include in the numbered list. -
SMC problem on my 2010 Mac Pro. Please advise.
In May I installed a 1 TB SSD in my mid-2010 Mac Pro (8-core Westmere). I have 3 partitions on the SSD -- one for Snow Leopard (my go-to OS), one Mavericks, and one called "Documents SSD" with my files and photos that I can open from/save to from either OS. I have clones of all 3 SSD partitions on the internal HD, which are always mounted -- very easy for backups -- and have identical clones on my two Firewire backup drives.
Then, in June I installed 24GB (6x4GB) of DDR3 ECC PC8500 1066MHz SDRAM, replacing the original six 1GB RAM modules.
Everything worked great, but a few weeks later I started having problems getting the Mac to power up -- pressing the power button did nothing. I reset the SMC several times and all went well for a while after each reset, but the problem always returned. I then tried resetting the SMC from the motherboard, and the problem again seemed solved for a while. Last week I did this again and reset the NVRAM as well, but the problem persists intermittently.
I've run the Apple Hardware Test, including the extended version, and it found no problems. I've run the TechTool Pro computer check routine, and aside from a few files with invalid content or unsupported formats (all jpegs, pngs and tiffs) and 3 TemplateInfo.plist files with invalid content in /Library/Frameworks/MacFUSE.framework/Versions/A/Resources/ProjectTemplates/, there were no problems. Ran VirusBarrier X6 -- no viruses. Ran MacScan -- no spyware.
I'm wondering if my cloning the SSD partitions to the internal HD has anything to do with the problem.
AppleCare has expired on my Mac Pro. I have an opportunity to buy a refurbished, identical machine (minus my modifications), but not from Apple, so I'm wondering if I should do that.
Any advice much appreciated!Thanks, hatter!
The RAM that shipped with the Mac Pro (an Apple refurb) was 1066 MHz, so that's what I chose from OWC for the 24GB upgrade. I'm sure it's too late to exchange for 1333 MHz at this point.
I have the Mac plugged into a UPS that I've used for several years, but put in a replacement battery some time back. The SMC problem is much more recent, though, and has occurred even when the Mac is plugged directly into a wall outlet.
I do always have TRIM running on all partitions on the SSD, per your original suggestion when I asked about going to SSD. I've never installed any PCI-e cards.
I installed etrecheck today. Very good! Thanks for pointing me to that. And I got rid of MacFUSE. Never knew what it was anyway.... I think the OS installer put it in. I'm also looking at removing recently installed apps, things like FinderPop, etc. However, I've been running MacScan, TTPro, and VB X6 in the main system for years with no problems. There is also a separate TTPro e-drive on the SSD for things like rebuilding directories.
The two OS partitions are about 57% full. Maybe I need to repartition and give them more space?
I did go ahead and buy the identical Mac Pro refurb from Amazon today, just in case. Never hurts to have a backup. -
Hello,
I've an installed Solaris 10.0 x86 platform. In order to run System Management Console, I type;
#smc
...and the System Management Console is runing and "toolbox window" appear. I select "Management Tools" and then something from navigation panel; for example "system information". the root password is asked to me and I enter it. Twice a security related questions displayed and I also click grant button.
At that point an alert displayed on the screen and I can not use SMC. The alert is that;
"System Information is not to able to connect to the server because WBEM server daemon does not appear to be running. If it is running, try stopping and restarting it. After restart the daemon, please also exit and restart the Solaris Management Console."
I am stopping the WBEM daemon and starting it by using following commands.
#/etc/init.d/init.wbem stop
#/etc/init.d/init.wbem start
...the problem keeps existing. I am checking the situation of the daemon by using following command:
#/etc/init.d/init.wbem status
it says me;
Solaris Management Console server version 2.1.0 running on port 898.
How can I run SMC properly? Could you please advise me? I am new at Solaris...
ThanksHello,
1193-09 and 119314-08 hasn't been applied to my system.
In order to remove 119314-11 I typed the following command and got the following result.
#smpatch remove -i 119314-11
Transition old-style patching.
Cannot find the backout packages for 119314-11
119314-11 cannot be backedout
I am new at Solaris, Actually I don't know how to remove it. Please advise...
Additionally,
I think my problem is not the same with yours. Because I think you weren't be able to get only users section in smc but I am not be able to get anywhere on smc.

Bad Airport reception and resetting SMC problem
Hi,
I still have the bad Airport reception problem (see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1088230&tstart=0).
I did a complete new erase and install with the discs I got with the computer (10.4.10). When I arrived in the Finder, Airport was completely gone. Nothing to see in the menu bar, nothing in SysPrefs, nothing in System Profiler.
I reset the SMC (shut down, remove power, remove battery, hold power key for 5 secs, install battery, connect to power, boot without pushing any keys). Now I got Airport back, although with the same bad reception.
As a bonus, I now have 2 extra problems:
- when the computer goes to sleep after some idle time, it wakes up again within the second
- rebooting gives me a black screen, no chime, caps key light doesn't work, sleep light is on but not flashing, hard drive is still spinning. Only option: hold the power key for several seconds until it shut downs and boot it again.
And by the way: all this after the Airport card has been replaced!
Any similar experiences, or even better: solutions?
Thanks,
JefHello,
I just received my MBP and I can't believe apple could keep ignoring this serious problem. I have a Dlink router and it works terrific with an old sony vaio but not with my brand new Mac!!! Actually my Airport detect several of the wireless networks around home including mine, but the signal indicator remains gray and the message:"there was an error joining the AirPort network "XXXXX" " is shown. What the **** are they doing at Apple? I use to be very confident about the quality of Macs but now ... Please Apple, stop being so arrogant and respect your costumers!!!! Provide a solution -
4 weeks ago my macbook unexpectedly went into 'sleep'. IT wasn't exactrly sleep, but the moniter was dark and the white light was glowing steadily (not flashing). It wouldn't waken, so i restarted. When this didn't work I restarted the SMC. This worked, and to stop this problem I was recommended the SMC firmware update by a friend. I was tranferring music at the time however, and did not want to restart. 2 days later the macbook went to 'sleep' again. It has not come out of this weird mode for 3 weeks. When I restart, the screen flickers once, and the Computer hums and the CD drive makes noises, but nothing else happens. No chime, no nothing. I called apple twice and no soloution was found. I do not want to send in my laptop. Is there any way out of this?
Well, as far as I can tell by looking at SunSolve, nobody's raised an escalation on this problem, so there's nobody working on a revised patch. Apparently there's a workaround involving stopping the webm server and all the smc stuff, setting JAVA_HOME to /usr/java (so Java 1.5 is used), restarting webm, restarting smc. Sounds a little flaky to me (why won't the problem come back next reboot?) but it seems to make everybody happy.

Hi
My son has a Mac Book Pro 13" mid 2012 with its original HDD and an upgraded RAM to 8 GB (Crucial).
Few months ago he damaged his laptop's body in an accident. Since then he have been using with no issues despite the fact the in addition the Ethernet port was not functioning.
I recently bought used the same model with a dead mother board (liquid spillage I think, some marks were by its usb ports, firewire 800 as well as around the battery connector).
My goal was to swap the mother board from his computer to the one with a good body and a dead mother board.
Th process was easier than I thought.
However when it started the keyboard was not responding, I have installed the zif cable correctly At least I think.
Another thing was that once I turned it off it would not restart unless I disconnect and reconnect the battery.
I assume that resetting the SMC will help but with no keyboard, how to do it on this model?
I am lost, thanks for your answers. Thanks, I thought about it but now when I turn it off I have to disconnect and reconnect the battery in order to have it start...

Cannot reset the SMc on my iMac
SO my iMac has been acting ****** for the past few months and ive asked a question and people tried to help but none of them were actually helpful..so the problem is my late 2010 core i3 running 10.6.8 imac cant read ANY USB devices (BUT WORKS PERFECTLY FROM THE WINDOWS PARTITION) except for my ipod and my iphone! those devices seem to charge and trasfer files perfectly..also it takes ages to restart or wake up from sleep..this all points to the SMC problems..so ive been trying to reset the SMC and youve guessed it it DOESNT RESET! Every armchair technician on the internet from the next web to apple support forums have written extensive articles on how and why i should rest the SMC..but they ALL have different instructions! one say i have to remove the power cord from the wall and hold the power button for 5 seconds one says i have to remove the cable from my imac and hold it for 15 seconds! none of them work ive tried every possible way with perfect timing! and IT DOES NOT REST THE SMC!!
Ive looked for videos on the web and nobody seems to have uploaded any videos for reseting the SMC on their IMAC BUT TEHY HAVE LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF VIDEOS FOR MACBOOKS!!
Im sorry if i sound like an *******,its because ive been trying to fix this unsolvabale problem for the past few months without any results!! OH AND MY BACKWARDS COUNTRY DOESNT HAVE ANY MAC TECHNICIANS!! i had to buy this from an unauthorized seller and paid twice the original price!!
FYI i already did the PRAM/NVRAM reset atleat a 100 times...I am trying to connect from outside of my network. From within the wireless network (PC#2, eMac, iMac) and from within the local lan network (PC#1, AirPort) I have no problem connecting to the website on the iMac. But connecting from outside my Network using the puplic IP I doesn't work.
I now have taken the AirPort and all the computers exept the iMac off line. Only the imac is connected via lan cable to my lan outlet in the wall. Using my new local IP address (172.16.126.246) I can of course still access the website on the imac but using the public IP address (222.228.213.117) which remained the same doesn't work. -

anyone got any hints on this?
i saw someone posted about resetting the SMC... that didn't do anything for me.....or perhaps i'm doing it wrong? can someone clarify how to reset the SMc?
i tried holding left shift, alt, ctrl and power sameUPDATE: Temporary Solution.

It hes something to do with SMC problem. You have to reset it.
"This is how on the Retina :
Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC." -
8800GT overheating. Mac Pro early 08, Snow Leopard
After two weeks of troubleshooting I have finally narrowed down what is wrong with my Mac. My 8800GT is overheating and locking up. Under normal use just surfing the web, etc it is fine; however, if I load up iTunes Visualizer full screen or WoW the card has to start working and freezes up in about a minute. This freeze can be postponed some if I crank up my IO and Exhaust fans to around 2k rpm. This only buys the card another minute or so. I can turn the machine off, let it cool for a minute, turn it back on and use it normally unless I start something that really works the 3D side of the GPU then it freezes again. What I did first was take out the card, remove the heatsink, clean the gpu and all memory chips, apply new thermal grease, reinstall the heatsink, and reinsert the card. This allowed the card to run maybe 15-20 seconds longer, not what I was hoping for. I found several VGA coolers that would fit the card, but I fear that if the card is getting that hot, there is a problem with it that just adding a cooler is not going to fix. This card ran WoW more hours a day than I want to admit for over a year, and now it can't get past the loading screen. I have left the case open and run the iTunes visualizer just so I could monitor how fast the card's housing was heating up. In the process I've noticed that the fan on the 8800GT never really seems to speed up despite the card getting noticeably hot. Could this be a firmware problem? a SMC problem? I have no way of getting the gpu fan to crank up its rpm to see if this would fix the problem. At this point I wonder if my only solution is to buy a Radeon 4870 and an adapter so I can continue running two monitors. Anyone have any other ideas??
I had similar problems here in Australia, the local Apple Mac centres are not very helpful I tend to call America direct, and let me tell you those guys do not fool around they will help you no matter what it takes.
I suggest you find the number to Apple in the USA, better service by far, I even challenge them and they take me head on so they are confident about what they say and know.
as for your fault, I suggest that you go back to the Apple store and request them to do systematic diagnosis of the problem starting with the power supply, then your main board, graphics card etc.. the process is technically termed process of elimination in which each part is replaced until cause is found.
If they refuse the I would send a letter of complaint to Apple explaining your circumstance. when you call the apple store they should put you through to the apple customer care centre, that is what they did for me, but again if no help is offered there then try America Apple Centre
Apple does use a lot of 3rd party service centres but from my experience they are not reliable or efficient, most probably because they don't just service Apple but are a general service centre for all types of electronics or computers.
here is a site with a list of numbers for apple support, Italy is about the 24th on the list:

Macbook Pro Late 2008 not recognizing battery and not charging
Hello
i really need some help please
i have a Macbook pro 15" Late 2008 running os x 10.7.4
i will say briefly how did the problem begin and what is the problem
it stopped charging for some reason the magsafe light was (and still is) dim green and at the battery icon it said not charging but after a couple of hours that it was turned off and connected i found out it is charging really slowly
later on that week
i was using an app called DSLR remote connected to my camera i left my macbook on the table outside connected via usb to my camera waited on it and came back
when i came back my mac was out of battery
i took it in hook it up to the magsafe nada nothing not charging dim light
so what i did i knew my magsafe charger is ready to be changed so i bought a new one
tried it same problem
later on did an smc reset
it did turn on biw the fans are really loud the battery icon (x) and it said no batteries available
so i tried my old fastly drained battery it used to hold up about 1-2 hours then i bought another battery but that was in the past
so i tried both batteries smc reseting with both same result
the smcfancontrol app says fan speed 000 rpm and temoerature 0 C
and one more thing when the mac is off and not connected to the magsafe i click on the battery indicator light on the left side i get a flashing light (battery empty needs to be charged) when i connect the magsafe it stops working even when its off and while its just connected
so it is and SMC problem
it has been like that for the past 4 weeks or so
i really need some help
and im from israel so no apple genius bars around =_= and i have a good technical knowledge
Sincerely, Sari Hassounits not about solving or not its about trying to
i understand nobody wants to make any harm to my macbook
thats reasonable
anyway its a hardware faliure of some sort i'll need to check it my self but now im almost sure its not software because i've tried many things
my other option is to run it off a battery
the thing is my battery is out so when its attached the battey indicator lights do work (they are controled by the SMC) that might solve it too
thanks for replying really
its appreciated -
Just got a new battery. I put it in and computer worked for a few minutes and shut down. I thought okay it needs to charge. Left it charging for three hours and tried turning on my computer and it came on, didn't recognize the battery and then turned off. So I have taken it out so I can type this question and ask for help. Help.
Thanks in advance!!!
nannyismeHi!
I think that it could be for 2 reasons: or the battery is defectuous or that's a SMC problem.
I guess that your mac is an Intel-based. So try to reset the SMC, it's explained at this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964?viewlocale=en_US.
If it doesn't work, try to update the SMC firmware, but I think that if you could use your old battery it hasn't to be necessary... -
Should Kernel_Task be constantly using 100% of my CPU?
Kernel_task is consistently running ~95-100% of my CPU. I'm using a 2013 MBA with Mavericks. Any thoughts about why this may be happening? I've seen on other forums that this may be related to 3rd party audio apps or something, but I don't have any 3rd party audio apps installed. Any other ideas?
Thanks. In brief: resetting the SMC solved the problem in my case.
My Mac Book Retina started an erratic wake-up behaviour (often hangig up after wake) about three weeks ago (somehow coinciding with upgrade to Mavericks). Last night out of the blue the kernel-task reading went up to several hundred percent, CPU usage by system up to 75-85%, making the machine terribly slow.
In another post, Linc Davis suggested a line of steps inlcuding checking the configuration of the mac. (I will post my results from EtreCheck below).
I unsucessfully tried: reinstalling OSX from apples webite, removing some of the non-needed third party extensions with no effect.
Finally I tried resetting the SMC: Problem stopped, everything back to a smooth and fast running machine.
(System Use about 3-7%, of this kernel_task around 5%)
Thanks to Linc Davis for suggesting this step.

I have just installed Solaris 10 - x86 and the installation went smooth. When I login as root and try to run the Management console (smc) is comes as
"It appears you are attempting to run the graphical Solaris Management Console from a terminal which does not have a sutable 'DISPLAY' environment. Please check your 'DISPLAY' settings and that the user identity of this terminal has access to the X server of this display."
I checked /etc/init.d/init.wbem status and its running on port 898.
Any help please????
Sathya. This is defenitely not a smc problem.
X windows is a network display system.
which means that you can start X programs local to your computer and also from any source unix computer to any remote X display hosted in another unix/linux computer.
You should consider the following terms:
1. If using your local display you must run X and open a terminal using the same user credentials of the owner of the X session.
2. if not using your local display or being the same user on your system you must follow the following rules:
a. in the source computer/terminal running the application you must set DISPLAY variable to the destination X display( in sh/bash you can do it: 'DISPLAY=Dest-IP:0.0 ; export DISPLAY ) '
b. in the remote X display system you must open a terminal and type: 'xhost +'
this will disable access control and permit remote programs to use your X.
c. now you can run your program in the source computer and hopefuly see the program on the remote display.
hopes this clarify. -

If that doesn't fix it, take it back to Apple for service.
