Snd_hda_intel hangs on suspend... no sound on resume and rmmod errors out.

SL300 running ubuntu 8.10 i386
Anyone seen this before or know how to fix it?
I'm probably going to write a script to kill pulseaudio and the module before suspend and bring it back up afterwards.

Hi there, well I had a similar problem, so maybe I can help. I just bought a new motherboard with a Realtek ALC880 that also has HD audio. With alsa 1.0.10 I couldn't get any sound, even though I could load all the sound modules as you have. What I did was go to the alsa website and download the sourcecode for alsa-lib and alsa-drivers for release 1.0.11rc1 (release candidate 1). You have to compile and install them - really easy read the INSTALL files in each one.
Now the HD audio works really well. I did remove the Arch package alsa 1.0.10 first, but I'm not sure if I had to or not. If you read the changelog for the alsa 1.0.11 files, you will see that they added autoprobe support for your card so this might do it.
good luck

  • Audio sounds compressed, hollow, and tinny coming out of my computer

    Hi everyone -
    I'm having an audio issue when playing files in iTunes 8.1.1 (10) and Quicktime Pro 7.6 (472) . I'm using ia Dual 2.7 Ghz PowerPC G5 running OS X Version 10.4.11.
    Recently I discovered that all of my audio files (music and spoken word podcasts) started sounding compressed, hollow, and tinny, both when I'm playing the files out of my speakers (Harman Kardon Soundsticks) or headphones (Sony MDR-7606).
    At first I posted this message over on the iTunes forum, but after playing the files in Quicktime I discovered that they still sounded compressed. The majority of my audio files are ripped from my CD collection using 256 kbps, 44.100 kHz, VBR, optimized for Velocity Engine.
    I don't think it's an issue with the files themselves - they sound normal when I play them using the same version of iTunes or Quicktime on my MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.6, which makes me think it's a software issue with OS X, or perhaps a hardware issue - but I'm totally at a loss as to what would cause this change in audio quality.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Thank you so much for this info! I have been trying to figure this out for months... Been driving me crazy why the audio sounded compressed and hollow when listening to it from within iTunes. Listening to 'previews' of the same audio files from the desktop sounded WAY better - now they both sound the same.
    Thanks again!

  • [Solved] No sound after resuming from suspend

    After suspending and resuming I no longer have any sound output (through headphone jack or my laptop speaker). The laptop is a toshiba portege r835. I can't say how long this has been happening, since I've only tried to play any sounds after resuming recently.
    Searching the forums I found the following thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=151001
    I haven't tried this because it isn't exactly the same problem, but mostly because I'm currently stuck on kernel 3.5.6 because of the sandy bridge power regression issues.
    Does anyone have any other ideas on how to possibly fix this problem?
    Thanks!!

    Solved, sort of.
    I had some double suspend issue: I had set up suspend with systemd before using xfce and then after installing xfce I set my power settings so that the computer would suspend after shutting the lid, so I would have to open the lid, shut it, and then open it again for the computer to actually resume. After turning off the suspend setting in the xfce power manager, and just using the systemd suspend, the sound works fine on resume (both headphones and speakers)!

  • Sound in system and Rhythmbox is scratchy and skips

    Two problems. Since a few hours ago, the sound on my system and in Rhythmbox has been *extremely* scratchy. I'm playing mp3 files through Rhythmbox, and in the system, the terminal beep is also quite scratchy. However, the scratches aren't present in Totem. I'm just using the standard ALSA configuration, I believe, since I don't remember installing anything special to make my sound work.
    I thought it might have been a simultaneous playback issue, because although I don't *play* sound in multiple apps at once, I often have several apps that utilise sound open (e.g. Totem, Rhythmbox, etc.) I changed my /etc/asound.conf file to this, based on the wiki. This is my /etc/asound.conf:
    # Use PulseAudio by default
    #pcm.!default {
    # type pulse
    # fallback "sysdefault"
    # hint {
    # show on
    # description "Default ALSA Output (currently PulseAudio Sound Server)"
    #ctl.!default {
    # type pulse
    # fallback "sysdefault"
    # vim:set ft=alsaconf:
    I thought maybe the update today broke this, but I don't know how to check which packages were updated today using pacman (or perhaps looking at modification times on files in /var/lib)?
    The second problem is my sound skipping, in every application. This has been happening for several days. I checked the wiki and found that this problem can occur with a speaker system not being configured properly by the system, so I opened alsamixer to check the levels, as shown: Master (43), Headphones (100), Speaker (96), PCM (99), and Mic/Micboost, S/PDIF, and Beep are all muted. However, I still get skipping and scratchy noises even if I use headphones or my laptops normal speakers, without the speaker system plugged into the 3.5mm.
    My audio controller is the built-in Intel device in my Lenovo SL510:

    Memory at f2a00000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
    Capabilities: <access denied>
    Kernel driver in use: snd_hda_intel
    Any ideas for what I can check to figure this out?

    Thanks Bengt and Chris,
    I have all of the updates for all of the relevant applications,ie iMovie 6.0.2 and QuickTimePro 7.1.
    I am aware of the problems that using the wrong sound format can cause and never use the 12khz setting.
    I do not think it is a hardware problem, such as external HDs or other externals, because, I can fire up FCP and capture the same clips from my camera with no change other than quitting iMovie and booting FCP and the sound is perfect.
    Thank you both for your input, I am really stumped here. I have been doing video on my Macs with since the early 90's when a 2gigabyte HD cost me over $2500 Australian and never had anything like this.
    Back in those days the biggest problem was getting anything captured at all, perhaps I have become lazy and accustomed to things "just working".

  • Suspend with Dell Inspiron 1720 and Nvidia closed source drivers

    Hey all! I'm really liking arch linux. That being said, it would be nice if I could get suspend to ram (or disk) working on my laptop (dell Inspiron 1720 with Nvidia geforce 8800m) .
    I followed the directions on the wiki for pm-ultils. When I try pm-suspend, my devices like mice and external HD's shut off, but all I get is a black screen with a blinking undercursor - the system does not appear to really suspend. Nothing will bring the system back, and I have to hard reboot.
    I tried insatlling uswsusp and followed the directions for that, but get the same result. Here is my /var/log/pm-suspend.log:

    Wed Mar 11 15:17:59 PDT 2009: performing suspend
    I have not put anything my /etc/pm/config.d/ because the wiki was pretty vague and Im not sure what to do there.
    I tried using uswsusp s2ram but that does not work. I added uresume to my /etc/mkinitcpio.conf and rebuilt the image to no avail.
    s2ram -n shows this:
    Machine matched entry 99:
    sys_vendor = 'Dell Inc.'
    sys_product = 'Inspiron 1720 *'
    sys_version = ''
    bios_version = ''
    Fixes: 0x0
    This machine can be identified by:
    sys_vendor = "Dell Inc."
    sys_product = "Inspiron 1720 "
    sys_version = ""
    bios_version = "A08"
    See http://suspend.sf.net/s2ram-support.html for details.
    If you report a problem, please include the complete output above.
    which looks to me like I am whitelisted. Am I missing something here? Should I be using one of the DM's power managers? It would be cool just to be able to suspend with a command but if I have to use something else no problem as long as it works.
    Running out of ideas, hope you guys can help. Plus the hard rebooting is wrecking my drive, I can see the non-contiguous percent rise each time.
    Thanks.

    I know this is an old thread and i shouldn't be posting but i have been looking EVERYWHERE for anybody that has successfully installed an 8800M inside of an inspiron 1720... i was just wondering how you went about it???
    Thanks.

  • Sound is flat and with no bass on ProBook 4710s (XP SP3)

    I have problem with SoundMAX integrated sound card in HP ProBook 4710s. Sound is flat and without any bass even if I connect it to the external speaker set. Only one solution I've found is reinstalling sound drivers but problem will appear after one or two days anyway. Sometimes after reinstalation, every program that try to use DirectSound hangs and I have to kill it from Task Manager and those programs starts to behave normally only after few reboots - at least until bass will disappear again. I'm using Windows XP SP3 with drivers from HP home page (everything properly installed). I will be glad if anyone could point me in the right direction how to solve this. Having to reinstall drivers so often is really annoying, apart from DirectSound stability. Thank you in the advance!

    Go to  msconfig and enable all services.  This fixed mine.  I think the actual service  says "audio" in it.  Hope this helps.

  • [CLOSED] sound over hdmi and optical

    Ok I know sound of hdmi is a pain for everyone but I've have been all over the wiki and Google and have yet to get mine working! The weird thing is... sound works in XBMC. I got movies with 5.1 sound and 2.0 sound to work as well as music and everything else (except sound effects on menu selections but i can live with them) by setting the audio device to Optical/Coax, speaker config to 5.1, enabling DD AC3 capable and setting both audio ouput device and passthrough output device both to hdmi. However it ONLY works in XBMC. I'm trying to get some emulators working and it doesn't work in them. it doesn't work in an lxde environment either or when I run:
    speaker-test -c 6
    If I can just get sound working over hdmi I would be happy, If I can get it to work over hdmi and the optical out both that would be even better (although I have a feeling that'll just make things harder).
    Here's my soundcards listed  with "cat /proc/asound/modules"

    I can get "speaker-test -D surround51:SB -c 6" to work but it's analog through 3 different 3.5mm jacks which apart from not being ideal, can't be hooked up to my surround sound system if I wanted it to.
    Whenever I run "speaker-test -D iec958:SB -c 6" or "speaker-test -D hdmi:Generic -c 6" I get:

    I've been all over the alsa page of the wiki. When I tried the settings under https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Al … DIF_Output they were already correct.
    To anyone who's bothered to read all this ( I sorry it's so long I'm just trying to be thorough) Thank you!
    If anyone has any clue what I can try to fix this I would be forever grateful.
    Edit: Well it looks like all that messing around I did last night trying to fix things only made it worse. Now the sound in XBMC doesn't work either.

    Hi!
    I spent the day asking friend google, browsing the arch wiki, ubuntu wiki and xbmc wiki.
    Lastly, I made it work. I have to admit that I don't know why and don't actually understand a thing of what I did, it was trial and error. However, here is what I did:
    installed alsa-oss (probably irrelevant)
    set the audio output settings in xbmc to "Audio output"="Optical/Coax", "Audio output device"="Defaults" and "Passthrough output device"="hdmi".
    used the following as my .asoundrc
    pcm.dmixer {
    type dmix
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,3"
    rate 44100
    pcm.!default {
    type hw

  • Trying to Output Sound to Speakers and TV Simultaneously on H8-1360t

    Hi everyone -
    I have an HP H8-1360t with an AMD HD 7570 video card, running Windows 7 64-bit.  I have speakers hooked up to the on-board sound via a standard 3.5mm cable.  I run DVI to my monitor and HDMI to my TV.  I am trying to get sound to go to the speakers and the TV simultaneously, without having to keep swapping the default playback device.  I tried the following that I found online:
    Open Sound panel
    Select Speakers as the default playback device
    Go to the "Recording" tab
    Right click and enable "Show Disabled Devices"
    A recording device called "Wave Out Mix", "Mono Mix" or "Stereo Mix" (this was my case) should appear
    Right click on the new device and click "Enable"
    Right click on the new device and click "Set as Default Device"
    Double click on the new device to open the Properties window
    Go to the "Listen" tab
    Click on the "Listen to this device" checkbox
    Select your HDMI device from the "Playback through this device" list
    This worked the first time I tried it and I was getting audio through both the PC speakers and from the TV.  Since then, it no longer works and I am only get audio via one or the other, depending on what device I select as my default.  It's more of an annoyance than anything else - having to manually switch between output devices every time I want to watch something on my TV instead of my monitor.  I assumed I could get dual audio output and simply not turn on the PC speakers when I wanted to watch something on the TV and it worked the first time!  I don't understand why it is no longer working.  Thoughts?
    TIA!

    Thanks for the reply!
    I believe that the answer is answer is yes to both questions - it defintely worked the first time.  I'm not sure if I tried it on the first reboot or not but it did not work the next time I tried it.  As far as what may have changed - I have no clue?!?  I do not see that the 7570 or the Beats audio had any updates.  According to Device Manager, I am running the latest IDT High Definition Audio CODEC driver.
    i did notice a couple of things tonight.  The video I used as a test the other day, that had audio and video going simultaneously on both displays, is displaying video on both the monitor and TV today but no audio on the TV.  That said, when I open up the Sound control panel, and click on the AMD HDMI Output, right-click, and click "test", I do get test "beeps" through my TV (while the audio from my video is running through my PC speakers).  So, it appears that it is indeed capable of outputting sound to both the PC speakers (via the onboard sound) and the TV (via the HDMI) - just not the same sound anymore!  Another thing I noticed is that when I go to the Recording tab, the Stereo Mix selection is noted as the Default Device, and I can watch the "meter" on the right move up and down in sync with the volume of the video I am playing back - only there is no sound via the TV.
    As usual, when I switch to the HDMI Audio Output as the Default Device, the sound plays fine on my TV.
    This is strange...

  • No Sound in VLC and Virtualbox

    I have a workstation with two sound outputs - my ESI Juli@ and the HDMI out on my FirePro V5800.  I have an issue where some applications cannot produce sound.  That said, alsamixer and the OS itself do see the card, and it works just fine for sound from Firefox.
    Originally, my issue was ALSA defaulting to the HDMI out and not giving me any audio.  I first solved this by blacklisting the module for snd-hda-intel (the HDMI out).  This "hack" allowed the OS to automatically choose the Juli@ as the default sound card and got sound working in the OS itself and Firefox.  But then, I realized VLC and Virtualbox weren't working with the card and figured I should find a more proper solution.  I got the following message from VLC:
    "VLC failed to initialize your sound output device (if any).
    Please update alsa-lib to version 1.0.23-2-g8d80d5f or higher to try to fix this issue."
    Looking at the ALSA page on the Arch wiki, I decided that manually reordering the modules was necessary.  The documentation there was poor, though, and I couldn't figure it out.  Eventually, I found a forum post about the above error message and someone put things in more simple language.  As such, I've modified my modprobe.conf to look like this:
    # /etc/modprobe.d/modprobe.conf (for v2.6 kernels)
    options snd-ice1724 index=0
    options snd-hda-intel index=1
    I must've done something right, because the OS and Firefox get sound just fine with the Juli@ as the default sound card without me blacklisting the HDMI out's module.  However, my issue in VLC and Virtualbox remains with the same errror message, so I figure I'm missing something.
    Here is the output of aplay -l:

    I'm thinking the system seeing the Juli@ as two devices means I need to add another line to modprobe.conf, but I'm not really sure at this point.  It'd be awesome if someone a little more expert regarding ALSA and maybe this audio chipset could please give a guy some help.

    BUMP for this one.
    I've updated packages since then, as well as manually selecting ALSA as playback for these two programs with no luck.  I've tried using the instructions here:
    http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index. … le-ice1724
    But it seems like most of it isn't relevant...  My Arch install has soundcore.ko.gz, snd-cmipci.ko.gz, and snd-ice1724.ko.gz just by proxy.  The part about /etc/conf.modules is deprecated in Arch as well.
    I'm dying to have sound in VLC and my VMs on my desktop.  Please help!

  • My iPad does not have sound when on the Internet, including YouTube, but does have sound with iTunes and other apps.  How can I correct this?

    My iPad does not have sound when on the Internet, including YouTube, but does have sound with iTunes and other apps.  How can I correct this?

    If you are sure that you have sound in other apps - and if you can still hear keyboard clicks and get notifications, then system sounds are not muted. Try this and see if it works.
    Close all apps completely and reboot the iPad.
    Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.
    Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I don't have idvd but i need to burn my movie from iMovie! what do i do? i have dvds but every time i try to use one, the sound is off and it doesn't work on quick time or adobe... help!!

    i have made a movie in imovie on my macbook pro, but apparently i don't have idvd!!!
    i need to burn this so i can watch it somewhere else, but im not sure how...
    ive already tried simply exporting it to Quick Time, and burned it to a dvd, but when i watched it... the sound was wrong and people's words were like muted...
    what do i do?!?! i don't know where or how to get idvd!
    help!!!

    Hi
    There are two structures of DVDs
    • Data-DVD - as burned from DeskTop/Finder
    • Video-DVD - to be played on a DVD-Player - Needs a program that can do this
    One can in iMovie - Export as QuickTime .mov and save this via DeskTop/Finder onto a DVD - BUT this will only play on a Computer and if it is a Window-PC this needs to download QT-player or VLC-player.
    But no DVD-player for TV can play back this.
    To get a Video-DVD then You need
    • iDVD (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • DVD Studio Pro (not from Apple any more) - or -
    • FinalCut Pro-X (can do simple Video-DVDs) - or -
    • Burn - http://www.digital-digest.com/software/Burn.html - FREE - but very PLAIN - no fancy things at all.
    • Roxio Toast™ 11 Pro - Fairly advanced - and costs a bit - still very Good and lot's of great tool's included. (I love it) - Can also back convert home made DVDs to an editable mode in an OK quality. With BD-component also capable to do sort of Blu-Ray DVDs.

  • Sound on ipad and iphone

    Since updating to os7.1.1 i lost my safari sound on ipad and iphone

    Hi pr1uk,
    It appears your devices are experiencing audio issues. The following article provides steps which may help you find a solution:
    If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support
    Follow these steps and test the sound after each one.
    Go to Settings > Sounds and drag the Ringer And Alerts slider to turn the volume up.
    If you can hear sound from the speaker, then the speaker works. Continue with these steps to find the setting or switch that's affecting the sound. If you can't hear sound from the speaker, contact Apple Support.
    Make sure the Ring/Silent switch is set to ring. If you can see orange, it's set to silent.
    Restart your device.
    Open an app that has music or sound effects. Adjust the volume with the volume buttons or the slider in Control Center.
    Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
    If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
    If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
    Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
    Update your device to the latest version of iOS.
    If you followed these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact Apple Support.
    Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Bobby_D
