Socket, telnet, FORTE
Can FORTE open socket connections and send data over the socket connection?
Has anyone written a telnet application using FORTE and if so could you
provide pointers or examples to get me started?
Thank you.

Andrea,
We have built a component that sends& receives data over a socket connection
(TCP/IP).
We used the ExternalConnection class for that. We took the Forte-example
application that uses the ExternalConnection as a base.
My colleague (see CC) implemented the Telnet-handshaking. He can tell you
more about this.
There's a lot of 'under water negotiation' necessary with the other side to
setup a Telnet session.
Good luck,

CTRL-M (^M) characters in data read from sockets
Hi,
We have developed a software applications which opens upto 300 TCP connections and 4000 UDP sockets. The data from the TCP application is multiplexed to UDP sockets and viceversa.
We connect to the application using a TCP socket and send certain data to the application which in turns sends this data to all the 4000 UDP sockets. The data received from 4000 UDP sockets is in turn sent back to the TCP socket as responses.
We used telnet to connecct to thespecific TCP port on our application, sent a request to be sent to all 4000 UDP sockets and noticed ctrl-M characters in the data received from TCP socket. However we are sure we are not appending or adding this ctrl-m character while sending the data on TCP socket.
telnet host port >/tmp/abc
send a request
send next request
(after 10 mins, close connection)
cat -vet /tmp/abc >/tmp/xyz
There are ctrl-m characters in /tmp/xyz.
^M is observed only at the end of few lines and not on all lines. Successive repeatition of this test generates ^M in different lines but at the end of the line always.
Can anybody help me to know why these ^M characters are getting generated?
Note: We are completely working on Solaris and do not move contents across Windows and Unix. Our application is completely written on C++
Thanks.

shekhnamI think I've misunderstood something here. The problem you're having is with the response being filtered by Telnet or your client, not what telnet is sending to the server?
In that case I think the explanation is clear. Telnet is trying to display what comes back on a screen, and it is deleting and inserting newlines every now and then according to its internal whim so as to make the data wrap. I don't know if you can control that, but I also don't know if it matters as long as you have your own client application. You just have to stop treating Telnet as a viable test client. -
Hello all,
I am receiving a directive to try to use forte as quote 'middleware'....
Can anyone tell me if they have any experience with the following or if they
know of any problems with trying this..... We are thinking of trying to
use Forte service objects for doing data movement - Sql calls to databases
mainly... We want to use Visual Basic for our GUI presentation.... Can
anyone point me in the right direction on how to go about doing this????
Thanks in Advance!With Forté Release 3 an elegant solution is the use of the OLE Automation Server feature. I saw this demonstrated where an existing Forté service object was re-targeted as an OLE automation server and quickly accessed via VB. Since this is a true implemenation of OLE Automation services the server can be accessed locally (relative to the calling application) or remotely using DCOM. Given the difficulty of DCOM at this point it is highly favorable to use Forté to provide local access to avoid the extra work.

is to communicate to Forte via sockets (using Forte's ExternalConnection
class).
With V3 of Forte (currently in beta), you can use OLE/DCOM or IIOP to
communicate to Forte. Since you say you want to use Visual Basic for the
GUI, OLE may be the best bet (although you sacrifice some of Forte's
features when you use DCOM -- specifically, a Forte service object that is
made into an OLE server cannot be replicated for load balancing or
failover).
I believe there are ActiveX-to-IIOP bridges out there, so that may be a
better option, but I don't know anything about these bridges.

[SOLVED]I cannot connect to my wifi
Hello everyone and thank you in advance. Recently I just re-installed Arch as my Harddrive corrupted. Before the networking was quick and painless for me. But after installing Arch (I got wifi from booting from CD), I could not connect. I followed the beginners guide and the wifi guide but still no luck. Here is the post of my ip link:

Hello,
did anybody else also experience the following problem?
Problem:
The router of a load balanced service object sometimes and all of a sudden stops forwarding incoming requests to its instances, although all instances are available and free.
This finally causes the whole application to hang, since no further call to a method of that service object is being processed.
Observations:
The dump of the load balanced router during this situation indicates that none of the instances is being used (see below). Besides, the instrument MembersInUse has a value of 0.
CPU load of the nodemgr and the router process increase significantly.
There is no DB deadlock.
We have had this problem on several different load balanced service objects (at different times; with dialog durations message or transaction).
It does not depend on overall system load or on available memory resources - the problem can occur at any time.
We can solve this lock situation by restarting the router.
UDS 5.0.3, HP-UX 11
Thanks in advance for any help or hints on what may be going on.
Martin.

Thu Apr 27 09:55:14 : Object: qqlo_ObjectHi Mark,
thank you for your response. I talked to our network group, they told me, that there should be no scans going on. Do you have an idea how we could verify this from the application side, e.g. are there any trace flags we could enable to get some feedback?
Anyway, we did further investigations and found the following:
1) The nameservice contains references to old, non-existing partitions, even to partitions that lived before the last reboot of the system, which are not marked as "[Needs Rebind] [Rebinding]" (showpart in nameservice). By the way, the instrument DeleteOnCommFailure is set to TRUE in our environment.
2) The directory $FORTE_ROOT/tmp containing the unix domain socket files does not get cleaned up. It contains even very old entries.
3) Putting 1) and 2) together, we found out that during the hangs of our system, the load balanced router tries to send a message to one of the not-more-existing instances of the Service Object.
Example:
The following dumps were done while our system was hanging.
The router partition in question is ...:0x3ce25:0x1.
The non-existing partition of the Service Object instance is ...:0x3b913:0x2.
The non-existing process has the PID 16736 (there was such a process running a Service Object instance prior to rebooting the system).
The socket file '/forte/tmp/FORTE_A00004160' still exists.
An extract of 'showpart' on the nameservice agent:

[solved] Large number of services enabled during first boot
I just set up Arch Linux on a VM and was surprised to see a large number of services enabled in systemd during the first boot, including ftpd! I have set up several Arch Linux installations before, and have never encountered this before.
To be sure, I installed a second time. While still booted in the install ISO, I checked and verified that only a few services were enabled. After the first boot into the system, sure enough, a large number of services were enabled.
Any ideas as to what might be causing this?
Edit #1: found the following in journalctl. It looks like a bunch of packages are missing systemd preset files, and services that are missing preset files are enabled by default.
Edit #2: filed a bug report: https://bugs.archlinux.org/task/41711
Edit #3: until this is fixed, a workaround is to get systemd-214-2 from ARM and downgrade to that before your first boot into the new installation. After you've booted, you should be able to upgrade back to the current systemd and have everything work out.
Edit #4: Fixed in systemd-216-3. If you installed and rebooted prior to 216-3 hitting [core], see here for a proper fix.

Problem: Socket
connection is not creating in machine, through utility program (MFC Dll), on ListDisplay service port - 3334 (on separate machine), while we are able to telnet on same ListDisplay service port - 3334 from same issue machine on same time
Environment: -
OS:
Windows XP SP2/7
Code:
VC 6.0
Dll: MFC
Problem Description: -
We have written a utility program which create socket (Using windows standard method [MFC]), and then make connection with another service (List Display) running
on port 3334 in different machine and retrieve the required list data. This program was working fine in almost all the machines.
But, we have received a severe intermittent issue on two machines. Client is facing issue in displaying the list data from port 3334.
Attempt: -
First we tried to debug code, and we come to know that socket is not creating in utility program. So we tried to telnet on ListDisplay service port 3334 and we were surprised that we were able to telnet, then we opened some more
telnet window on same port 3334 around (6 to 8) window, and each cmd connected properly. But we were not able to create socket from utility program.
Problem is severe because issue is intermittent.
We have tried all the way, but we are not able to figure it out, that what can be the exact problem and what are the conditions, when utility program will not
connect with ListDisplay service on port 3334.
Kindly assist to resolve this issue. For any help, we would be really thankful.Hi,
According to your description, it seems that you have created an utility program which is making connection with another service port 3334, however, two clients are facing issue in display the data list from port 3334.

Since the port 3334 is used by directv-web service, I'd like to suggest check this service it is working well on the problematic clients.
1. The client can be resolved in DNS well? Please run "nslookup" in the prompt command.
2. Is there any 3rd party application interrupting? Do test in clean boot.
2. Strongly suggest you run process monitor tool to analysis it.

Using telnet sockets and running stand alone
Hi all,
I'm writing a Flex application that uses sockets to
communicate through Telnet / port 23 with AV control devices over
the local network. The target is to run the application locally (so
not from a web server) from a PC.
The application works fine from my development machine.
However when I copy the bin folder to the target machine, the
telnet connections refuse to open. Actually, it appears that
wherever I copy the bin folder (including to a different location
on my machine) the connections won't open. Simple opening the html
file from the bin folder on my machine works perfectly.
Anyone have any idea what could be wrong or what I can do to
fix this. Any input would be greatly appeciated.

Telnet in UNIX throug a socket
I am trying to connect using a socket to a server running unix OS. The code uses the class Socket with this directive.
Socket sock = new Socket(servername,23);
BufferedInputStream in = new BufferedInputStream(sock.getInputStream());
//and then i start to read from the server with:
int byte_n = in.available();
Byte buff[] = new Byte[byte_n];
byte_n = in.read(buff);
//the problem is the bytes the program return available is zero, but the socket shows conected and if I try to connect with the Windows telnet from the command line I receive response (the initial message and the request for login and password).
My code works if I connect to other server running non UNIX OS.That's not my problem... I've already tried using a buffer but it doesn't work yet...
Here is part of my code...
try {
socket = new Socket(server, port);
System.out.println("Connected with server " +
socket.getInetAddress() +
":" + socket.getPort());
catch (UnknownHostException e) {
System.out.println(e);
System.exit(ERROR);
catch (IOException e) {
System.out.println(e);
System.exit(ERROR);
BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(socket.getInputStream()));
char inchar = 'a';
while(inchar != 'n')
inchar = (char)in.read();
System.out.println(inchar);
I am trying to connect through port 23. I know the socket is gettiing connected but I never receive any byte in the socket input stream. In the example I am geting a char, but I I have proved with the readline() method too, and it doesn't work... The code works if I try to connect to a Cisco Switch... I dont know if thte UNIX OS has any particular configuration....... -
Hi. Anybody has experience getting Forte to work with Telnet? I am
trying to write a Forte application using ExternalConnection to connect
through Telnet and reading and sending data to the host computer. When I
do a read from the connection buffer, I got junk data back (basically
unreadable characters).
Can anybody provide me with some suggestions?
Thanks,
SannI use EScript and FScript through telnet sessions all the time, and I
don't have any problems. Can you give more information on the problems
you are experiencing? Are there any error messages? Does it hang? Any
other information about the platforms and process you are using?
For example, can you even get into FScript/EScript? If not, your
environment variables for the user may not be set (you have to have set,
at least, FORTE_ROOT and FORTE_NS_ADDRESS, or you have to use explicit
paths and the -fns flag).
Also, how are you invoking telnet (Unix-to-Unix, Windows-to-Unix,
etc.)? Which telnet client are you using?
More information would be really helpful in diagnosing your problem.

Reading a file through a telnet socket
Hi,
I would like to be able to read the contents of a file once
I've logged on to the server. I have logged in successfully.
If I use
BufferedReader isr = new BufferedReader(new FileReader("path/code.txt"));
I get an IOException saying it can't find the file.
Am I supposed to use the socket (socket.getInputStream()) with a reader class to indicate that the file I want to read is through the socket and not on my desktop? If so how do I do it?
TIA
LyndaYou have to get the server process to open the file on the server machine and have it pass the file back through the socket. Just creating a socket from your client machine to a server machine is not in itself enough to see the file system.
For example FTP works like this (at a conceptual level)
server: listening on port 21
client: connect to server on port 21& supply username password
server: username OK
client: GET me file called code.txt
server: open file code.txt on local file system, pass the bytes through the socket
client: read the bytes coming through the sockets and place them in a file called code.txt on the local FS
client: terminate connection
hopefully this will point you in the right direction -

I connect to the simulation on a localhost, but I am not getting any info from the simulation, and I can not send any info too.
How do you implement the PYTHON script:
//* psuedo code
conn = telnet.connect(127.0.0.1, 5480)
gear_down = conn.get("/gear/state")
if gear_down:
conn.set("/gear/state", "up")

have my account
The problem is when i start Server on
student.agh.edu.pl and try to connect with it
starting Client also from student.agh.edu.pl
everything is ok, but when i try to connect from my
home computer there is no connection.
Im sure i put correct port numbers etc. When im
trying to connect to http port - 80 everything is ok.
So where is problem??
I wrote similar program using DatagramSocket and
there also everything was ok.Go ask your university network admin why the firewall disallows what you are trying to do. -
Problem with socket connection
have my gps reciver connected to the usb port - i have a daemon gpsd running which makes data available on tcp port 2947 for querying. when i do telnet, it gives proper data.
but when i open a socket connection using java, it does not print anything as output. actually telnet asks for an escape charatcer so i am sending "r" initially to the server but still the program does not print anything as output.
here is my java code -
import java.io.*;
import java.net.Socket;

public static void main(String[] args)

My socket programs dont work in linux it shows error -

Problem with socket responses with flex
Hi, I am using the code below to connect to an IMAP server.
When I telnet to the server and use the commands that I am sending in the code, the rsponses are correct.
However, when I run the code below, I only obtain the ready and logged in responses as shown below.
Any ideas why I am not receiving the full set of responses from the socket?
Thanks in advance fro your advice.
The following is the output from the code:
+++++++++++++++++ START SENDING IMAP DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++
sent: . login user1 myPassword
sent: . status INBOX (messages)
sent: . select INBOX
+++++++++++++++++ END SENDING IMAP DATA +++++++++++++++++++++++++
++++++++ [IMAP START]
Response is: * OK Dovecot ready.
[IMAP END] +++++++++
++++++++ [IMAP START]
Response is: . OK Logged in.
[IMAP END] +++++++++
The code is:

</s:WindowedApplication>When I run telnet, the console responses are the same as the tcpdump messages.
When I run the program, the messages from tcpdump match the messages in my trace statements.
The messages from telnet and running the program are different:-)
I can only assume (at the moment) that I am sending multiple messages too quickly(?), but I did a quick and dirty big "for loop" to slow down the sending of subsequent messages, but with no resulting change in the programs behaviour.
So, still thinking about the problem - unfortunately. -
Hi,
I'm trying to make socket connection from within air application, but no way. I'm browsing google for almost 2 days, follow all possible solutions, but avidently I dont understund somthing cause I'm not able to do anything.
Every time sandbox security violation..... I need make some simple socket data exchange between my air, and OS. I do not have any web server and no any other kind of network ability. I write down stupid socket server, which is waiting for policy request, and for my other requests (it function 100%, tested with Telnet, so no way to have problem on my socket server side).
The strange thing is that my application do not produce any request for socket policy file, neither at 843 port (for default), neither at my custom location with namual
Security.loadPolicyFile("xmlsocket://ip:port"); call
This is my primitive code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<mx:WindowedApplication xmlns:mx="http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
layout="vertical">
<mx:Script>
<![CDATA[
private var s:XMLSocket = null;
private function test():void{
Security.loadPolicyFile("xmlsocket://127.0.0.1:25013");
if(!s){
s = new XMLSocket();
s.addEventListener(DataEvent.DATA, onData);
s.addEventListener(Event.ACTIVATE, onActivate);
s.addEventListener(Event.CONNECT, onConnect);
s.addEventListener(Event.DEACTIVATE, onDeactivate);
s.addEventListener(IOErrorEvent.IO_ERROR, onError);
s.addEventListener(SecurityErrorEvent.SECURITY_ERROR, onSecurity);
s.connect("127.0.0.1", 25013);
private function onActivate(e:Event):void{
debug.text += "Activated\r";
private function onConnect(e:Event):void{
debug.text += "Connected\r";
var o:XML = <request cmd="10"/>;
s.send(o);
private function onDeactivate(e:Event):void{
debug.text += "Deactivated\r";
private function onError(e:IOErrorEvent):void{
debug.text += e.text + "\r";
private function onSecurity(e:SecurityErrorEvent):void{
debug.text += e.text + "\r";
private function onData(e:DataEvent):void{
debug.text += e.data;
s.close();
]]>
</mx:Script>
<mx:Button label="Test" click="test()"/>
<mx:TextArea id="debug" width="100%" height="100%"/>
</mx:WindowedApplication>
Any help will be apresciated.
Ladislav.Hi,
It pass some time but if i remember well, my problem was that i did
not terminate stream output form my server vs air application, and it
returns this security error.
When I send '\0' at the end of my message it work correctly. Yes the
server was my own written socket server (c++ using boost libraries).
Laco.
Sorry late response I'm on hollydays
Staney G ha scritto:
So, how did you walk around the problem? Did you have a control on how server responds?
My test case failed similarly. However, the target server is a public web service.
Will appreciate your answers!
