Software Instruments Don't Sound Like the Instrument?

I am new to GarageBand and find it has great functionality - I've been very quickly able to link up a MIDI keyboard, and mix that with some iTunes tracks etc to get the final output I want.
But there is one area where I think something must be going wrong and that's the sound that the various software instruments make. There are a huge variety of them, some of them with quite subtle differences between them according to the name. But many of them don't sound anything like the instrument they proport to represent.
Starting with pianos - when I'm creating tracks I frequently start with a piano playing the tune. However, most of the piano software instruments sound nothing at all like a piano.
Take Grand Piano as an example - this just sounds like an electronic keyboard. Pretty much the only piano instrument that sounds like a piano that I've been able to find is "Grand Piano on Stage".
Seems somehow like with only some of the instruments GarageBand is using the synth data to produce a real instrument sound and with others it is just playing an electronic tone that bears no relation to the instrument sound.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

it means those instruments are not actually installed on your machine, for some reason. you should reinstall GB:

Yes Rosetta has been gone for over two years. You can always search here for how Michael Lax's instructions on how to run SL Server in a virtul environment, but I don't think it is too kind to gamers.
Advice? Buy an old Mac that runs PPC software.

  • When I play my Ipod shuffle 3rd gen there's a moment when I start hearing interference until it stops playing, when I turn it off and on again it starts playing from the first song all over again, and once it sounded like the music was slowing down.

My Ipod shuffle 3rd gen starts playing songs with some kind of interference until it stops playing, when I turn it off and on again it starts playing from the first song all over again, and once it sounded like the music was slowing down.  First I thought it was the earphones, but I exchanged them for newer ones and so far its the same

You may want to do a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes.  The Restore button is on the shuffle's Summary screen in iTunes.  This will erase the shuffle, re-install its software, and set it to default settings.  If it's a software or data corruption glitch, the Restore should fix it.  After the Restore, reload or resync your songs, and try it again.  As a test, you may want to initially select a small number of songs to put back on the shuffle.

  • Volume up button sounds like the camera is going off

When I press my volume up button it sounds like the camera is going off but no pictures are being taken.  Any idea why this happens?
    Thanks!

    Hello there, JDHMB.
You might want to close out all apps first and foremost:
iOS: Force an app to close

Then it might be worth attempting a restart of the iPhone, and then a reset, should that not resolve the issue.

If the sound is still being generated by the phone while using volume controls, you may want to try restoring the iPhone.

  • My macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

my macbook pro won't stop making noise! It sounds like the fan but I'm not sure. Any ideas? It's really worrying me because I haven't had it for up tp 2months and last week everytime I switch it on it makes sooo much noise. And I treat like an egg so I don't understand whats going on.

    Hey,
My friend had a very similar issue to yours. The issue came down to the pins of the MagSafe not meeting with the MacBook perfectly causing the lights and the transfer of power to be wacko. I'm not sure if this is issue that your experiencing, but its worth checking out the pins and the MagSafe area on your MacBook for debris.

If that is all clear, then I would suggest you call AppleCare or take it in to an Apple Store to have it checked out.

  • My recorded signal is not sounding like the signal I am monitoring.

My recorded guitar is not sounding like the signal I am monitoring. It sounds very good when recording, but lacks energy and detail when it is played back. If I am using input/direct monitoring am I also bypassing the Analog to Digital converters? Could this explain the difference in sound quality?
Would it be the same to monitor a signal directly out of the sound card and to monitor "through" Logic?
My sound card is a Presouns Firepod.

    No.

Consult the manual of that device, to see if you can learn from where in the signal chain it gets your direct monitoring from --- PRE conversion or POST conversion... My bet is that it is pre conversion.

  • HD videos from Sony NEX-3 sound like the Chipmunks

My Sony NEX-3 720p MP4 videos sound like the Chipmunks. Video frame rate appears ok but the sound is way too fast. The files play nicely e.g. in Preview though.
iMovie imports the files nicely, using the internal SD reader in my iMac. However, the sound is out of sync in the imported files. From the sound of it, it seems the audio runs at least at 2x the speed.
Currently I use Handbrake for converting the camera clips into 25 fps m4v and then importing these into iMovie but it is a pain.

Can you tell me how you imported the video from your NEX-3 to iMovie?  When I try, the camera automatically opens iPhoto and imports it there.  If I open iMovie, all of the selctions are grayed-out so I can't import them.  I've tried getting the video straight from the camera but can't seem to do that either. Can you help?

No, but when the other party hangs up first I have heard the click of the disconnect.

  • I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels outputing different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

I'm using GarageBand 10.0.1. Do the built-in drum tracks only come in mono format, or is it possible to make them true stereo (i.e. Left and Right channels putting out different signals, to sound like the kit has been panned across the stereo field)?

All the Drum Kits available for GarageBand are mixed in stereo.
Logic provides the same 18 Drum Kits also as "Producer Kits", which are multi-track outputs,. Each Drum Kit Piece (Kick, Snare, HH, etc) and also room mice and overheads are routed to individual channel strips.
Here is a screenshot of one Drum Kit in Logic Pro X with individual Channels Strips. Each Channel Strip can be loaded with individual effects (compressor) and adduced with individual sends, etc.
What that means is that all the Drummers are professionally recorded and sampled with individual mics. The Stereo Drums Kits are just "stereo mix-downs" for easier handling and less CPU demand. I explain all the details about the Drummer ecosystem in my graphically enhanced manual "GarageBand X - How it Works"
    Hope that helps

dont have google open in a tab!!!!!!!!
(if you are one who opens FF and it opens google then immediately open another tab to go to a site then just visit the site from the page that opened without opening a new tab)

  • Sounds like the camera

Whenever I turn the home screen on or off by pressing the on/off switch, I get a sound like the camera is taking a picture.
I have Lookout, which has an option to take the picture of anyone that enters the wrong password x number of times, but I have that disabled.
Does anyone know if this is a "feature" and if I can get rid of the sound? It's getting kind of annoying.

Then i would try Running the phone in Safe Mode and see what it does if the issue stops then you Know there is a 3rd party App that is possibly causing the issue at then you would want to remove each app one by one till the issue goes away). But if the issue remains then i would Look at Running a System Cache, or Doing a Factory Reset.. And as i mentioned in my earlier post holding down the power + lower Volume down will snap a screen shot but continuing to hold will power off the Razr it's referred to as a Power Cycle same thing as you use to do when pulling the Battery.. When i do a power Cycle i hold the button in for at least 30 sec...

  • Music Sounds Like the Chip Munks singing

I have an a6537c Pavilion and the music sounds like junk.  Sounds like the Chip Munks.  What can I do?

Well... sounds like you have an audio enhancement enabled. There are a few places where they can be set. Check the following places to turn them off:
    Windows Media Player 11
    1. Play music
    2. Right-click menu bar.
    3. From the menu that opens, select View, Enhancements, and Play Speed.
    4. Adjust the Play Slider to 1.0
    Windows Sound (Realtek codec)
    1. Right click the volume icon next to the time in the taskbar.
    2. Select Sounds.
    3. Select the Playback tab.
    4. Select your default playback device denoted by a green circle with a check (probably Speakers).
    5. With the playback device selected, click the Properties button.
    6. Click the Enhancements tab.
    7. Select Disable all sound effects.
    8. Click OK.
    Hope this helps.

  • Desktop has a noise that sounds like the fan

I turned on my IMAC desktop and there is a noise that sounds like the fan. The computer is very quiet till now. What should I do?

    LexSchellings wrote:
Yes, I know, but it works as always, there is nothing to make it better; cf Perian.
iStat Pro does not quite work "as always" with newer systems.
For one thing, it may report inaccurate temperatures (& possibly fan speeds), depending on the Mac model it is running on. (For instance, on my system, it tells me the ambient temperature is around 54° F in a room that is actually about 77°.)
The problem is basically that iStat Pro gets temperature & fan speed info by querying the SMC subsystem. Apple has apparently changed the query/response protocols or the SMC hardware itself, so this no longer works as the utility expects.
And Banjo is not as "safe" and digs too deep with core kexts.
Banjo is the new name for the same company that developed iStat Pro & the original & newer iStat Menus programs. My guess is that the latest version of iStat Menus is just as safe to use as the earlier ones.
However, I won't use it for the same reason I won't use MenuMeters: both rely on MenuCracker, a hack to work around Apple's restriction of menu extras to ones Apple develops & distributes as part of the OS itself. Developers are specifically told to use 'Status Items' for their menu bar add-ons, which offer some but not all of the same functionality as menu extras, & do not risk destabilizing the OS or compromising its security.

  • My podcasts download from laptop iTunes but play back sounds like the chipmunks!

I download podcasts to my laptop for use on iPhone, iPod and shuffle (different places, different situations). Only problem is that the playback on the iPhone is so speeded up, it sounds like the chipmunks! Any suggestions?

This is correct and it's got to be the stupidest tiny icon anyone could sabotage a nice podcast with - but thanks for nothing (i.e. useless crud).  But at least iPhone folks help one another out.  Thanks,
