Software recommendation

I need to create a user interface software on a PC running Windows XP or Windows 7. The software needs to send and receive short data strings on a single RS232 port for controlling a custom RS232 instrument. The data strings are less than 10 bytes of ASCII and are not packetized with checksums. The user interface needs just a few soft buttons to send commands and a few windows to display voltage and current readings from the RS232 port. Click a button, see a reading.
I do not have software to write this application, still need to buy it. The software should be easy to learn and use so I spend less time trying to learn the software and get the job done quickly. I have no prior PC software writing experience but >30yrs in firmware. Might be crazy asking this question in a LabView forum but is LabView a good software to use for this? Any specific versions to look for?

That kind of depends on your definition of crazy...
Obviously, asking this in a LabVIEW forum will provide more positives than negatives. Since you have a background in firmware I'm guessing your background is with eihter C or assembly language. Given that, the programming paradigm in LabVIEW is not the same. LabVIEW is a dataflow language, not a procedural language, like text-based programming. Dataflow means a node executes when data is present - it doesn't matter whether it's to the left of another node, above it, or below it. A lot of people who start out in LabVIEW don't get this and they try to program LabVIEW as if it were C. C++ experts will tell you the same thing if you're starting in C++ and come from C: don't program C++ as if it were C.
If you were to purchase LabVIEW you'd get the most recent version, which is LabVIEW 2010. However, I think you might be asking about a specific edition, as in whether to get the Base, Full, Professional, or Developer Suite. I can tell you one thing here: don't get the Base. The Base does not include the event structure which you will almost certainly need. For RS-232 you would be using NI-VISA, which is a separate item, albeit it's free. Thus, the Full should suffice for what you're doing. NOTE: you did not indicate whether you are planning to build this into an application for distribution. If so, that requires the Application Builder. The Full edition does NOT include the Application Builder - you would need to buy that separately. The Professional Edition comes with the Application builder.
LabVIEW comes with a lot of examples (including ones for serial communication), and for what you're doing you'd best be served by using a standard programming design pattern, such as the state machine or the producer-consumer. For what you're doing a simple producer-consumer would be quite effective.
Your best bet to see if LabVIEW is right for you is to download the demo - you can use it for 30 days. Please note that the demo is the Professional edition. There are also tutorials available in the introduction material, and other material in the NI Developer Zone's Learning Center which provides links to other materials and other tutorials. You can also take the online courses for free.
Now, with all that said I would be remiss in saying that you can also do this quite easily with another development environment, such as C, or .NET. The big advantage with this method is that Microsoft makes available Express editions of their .NET development tools for free.
Ultimately, it comes down to what your budget is, and what you feel most comfortable in.

I am looking for software recommendation for to control volume on ipod, as Sound is horrible. Far from consistent. Any and all recommendations are welcome and appreciated.

Have you tried the Sound Check option in iTunes?
I assume you are referring to volume from one song to the next going from too quiet to blow our your ear drums loud?
I turned on Sound Check and that helped considerably. But now I have to go back in and tweak some volumes for some CDs, especially for ones that I had boosted way up before using Sound Check. So as I listen to stuff, if I notice a particular artist, album, track, being overly quiet or loud compared to most, I make a note to adjust it later when I get home. Using the "recently played" play list helps you to find those ones you recently played that have the problem.

  • Catalog Publishing Software Recommendations Anyone :)

    Hello,
I would love to get some catalog publishing software recommendations besides Easy Catalog (currently using Easy Catalog and looking to get away from it) that are user friendly with InDesign?
We are looking to streamline our process and hopefully use a datapull that we produce into an excel document. Our catalogs are generally printed and anywhere from 80-130 pages each.
If you need more info for recommendations please let me know.
    Thank you all!

    Kim,
I have not seen any custom demonstrations by them, im always learing of having to "sign up" for things online in order to get demonstrations, ive been bombarded with  tons of junk email before by doing this. Since you have used this program can you tell me if i can have my data pulled from an excel document in order to use this program? Basically our information is entered into a specific program that was written for our business. In the past we have had to extract data from this program, run it through yet another program and then convert it to excel document... Hey at least we are able to work with it... lol  Trying to find an easier way

  • Data Recovery software recommendations?

I want to try to recover any or all of data lost on my iMac in Fire Vault. Would you recommend Data Recovery II, Disk Warrior, Stellar Phoenix, or something else? Pros, Cons?
    Thanks!

When I took my iMac to the Apple Genius he said there was a large chunk of data that was something other than the usual OS, software apps, etc. He thought it was the Lost Data but wasn't sure if it was just bits and pieces of the Fire Vault encrypted contents mashed together.
I have a Post Archive and Install folder containing a Previous System Folder. Within it is Previous System 1. I snooped around but found little to nothing in any file marked Start Up or User. Nothing on the Hard Drive either.
In my search, I noticed that there were no dates on any Folder or File between July 7, 2009 and August 17, 2009. Apparently, 07/07/09 is when something terrible happened and I couldn't log on to my iMac. (August 17th is the date I brought it in to the Apple Genius and he was able to open things up.)
As I searched I looked at anything with the date 07/07/09 and noticed 2 files sitting outside the Extensions folder within the "Previous System" Library folder: 1) Extensions.kextcache (340 KB Document) and 2) Extensions.mkext (8.6 MB Document).
I tried to open the 8.6 MB doc and got a "can't open/go to Recommended Applications" window. I chose Text Edit and the doc opened revealing a bunch of code or something which I can't decipher. I'm not sure if anyone could decipher it. I then cringed thinking that I may never be able to get back to the original (non-TextEdit) version of the file. Also worried that I may have messed up an important Extension file.
I checked my current System folder and the same two files are sitting outside the Extensions folder in the System Library. Unfortunately, that same 8.6 MB doc has also been changed to a TextEdit doc. I'm not sure how that happened since I only opened the doc I found in the "Previous System" folder in TextEdit. I thought the "Previous" folder was totally separate from my current System folder.
    My questions:
What is a "Extensions.mkext" file? Is there an application that can open it?
Can I revert the Extensions.mkext (8.6 MB Document) back to it's original state?
Have a total messed up my computer again by changing the .mkext file to a TextEdit file?
8.6 MB seems to be quite a large chunk of something--might it be significant?
Would reading the TextEdit version reveal any important clues and who might be able to read it?
If I wrote down everything that has the date 07/07/09 on it would it reveal clues as to what happened and whether I could find the Lost data?
I'm afraid to do the Disk Utility procedure you described...not sure what would happen or if it might change whatever data might still be in there into something totally undecipherable.
    Help!
Thanks for all of the time and thought you've put into my issue! I really appreciate it!

  • Backup Software Recommendation

Looking at backing up my X-Serve and 3.5TB X-Serve Raid using Apple, instead of backing it up as a client using Backup Exec thru Windows. I just downloaded Retrospect Server and it seems very weak. Anyone have a recommendation.
I would like to find some software that will allow me to do weekly (during the weekend) "full" backups and during the week "incremental". Of course utilizing multiple tape library sets, etc. I just bought an IBM Ultrium Tape Library System connect via Fiber.
Any help in this department would be much appreciated.

Atempo Time Navigator, Bakbone Netvault, or Tolis Group's BRU, in that order.

  • Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive Software recommendations

    Hi all.
I have an old Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive that I keep around to access the old tapes. Moving from computer to computer I eventually started using TimeMachine for backup to SATA Externals. I moved important stuff off of the tapes to get faster access to the stuff I backed up.
I am running out of space again and decided I am going to build or buy some type of NAS box. This will involve buying some more drives ultimately and maybe some new backup software that will run off of a server. I am thinking of just using Time Machine over a network but I haven't decided yet.
Unfortunately while cleaning some drives and getting rid of old software and documents to make more space for new stuff I wiped a system disk that was on the G4 this was running on. The Exabyte VXA-2e Firewire Tape Drive came with included software when I bought it. I am pretty sure it was some light edition of Retrospect but I can't recall. I have the old G4 (not in service minus drives), a Power Mac G5, an iMac, and Mac Pro Tower.
Here is my delema. I want to get the VXA working again as I still have some files on there that I never went through. I would also like to use it for as long as it will run as a redundant backup system. I have run out of space on all the drives I currently have and will most likely just buy an external harddrive but until I get the more expensive NAS up and running I would like to avoid spending any unnecessary funds. Since I can't locate the cd with the driver and software I looked on their site. Retrospect has changed hands several times and there is no availble downloads other than the Utility. Oddly enough I found my CD storage box and I have every other OS, Utility, Script, etc that I have ever used so I am thinking it's lost or fell out of the box during a move.
Can anyone recommend some very inexpensive software that will backup (and control) the tape drive? I am willing to use open source/free alternatives or to buy used software. I thought about an old copy of Retrospect but I can find any. The new stuff looks great but since the minimum will require slapping down about a bill ($100) I figured that I should just use that money to buy an external in the next couple of days while I sort out the bigger more robust NAS plan. I also looked for BRUs lite software but they don't sell it anymore.
BRU is a good product but it's out of the budget for now at least until I figure out the NAS.
I just need some creative thinkers to make some suggestions that I might be able to employ so I can start cleaning off some of the other drives because I plan to use the SATA I, II, and III drives I have to put in the NAS. I will probably use PCIe cards or firewire/usb host cards to ulitize all the drives. You might be wondering why I want to save so much data and it's really simple. I have asset libaries and client work product which I often need to go back to either because they want some element re-done in a fresh way or because I can actually re-use some work product on new projects for other clients. I often take mockups and demos and re-cycle them by submitting them on new projects so I can offer more than one choice to clients during demo submissions.
    Anyone got any ideas?

    Hi Ivan,
Thanks for taking the time to link to this. It will probably help someone else. Yes you are correct. I believe that it is the full installer. I made this post then went and looked at the box I had. It's Retrospect Express. I probably should have been clearer on that. I believe Retrospect Express is a light edition.
I did try that installer and it doesn't look like the version I was using. For some reason I am thinking it was version 4.x or 5.x Another issue is that the version you linked to required a license. I don't recall if the version I had needed one but if it did I would have kept it with the disk in a disk box I have. It's not in the box.
I also contacted Retrospect and sent them the license and asked if they could help or make a suggestion. Their reply was "The program is not supported anymore and due to change of hands we no longer have records regarding your registration. Please buy the new product"
Another issue is that I had someone help me set it up when I first started using it. I needed to get it up and running before I actually had the time to read the documentation. Dantz' first manual was probably the most confusing manual I have ever read. (Or as my daughter would say "ever, ever, ever, ever" kind of like the way Taylor Swift sings it). ;-)
I suppose I may have to start looking for someone on Craigslist who has an old retired copy they would be willing to sell me. Then maybe I could use the version you linked to. All I need is the ability to control the tape. Read/Write/Erase. I will even forgo the index rebuilding feature for when an index get corrupted until I figure out my NAS box.

  • RELIABLE data backup software recommendation for MacBook Pro WANTED!

I own Retrospect 6.x and I must say that on the intel platform it is less than stellar. On my 15" Powerbook I would get about 90MB/minute and on my new 17" MacBook Pro I am getting about 30MB/minute, which is taking FOREVER. Can someone PLEASE recommend some reliable data backup software in universal binary that will obtain backup speeds similar to what I use to get out of Retrospect on my powerbook? Thank you kindly!
    Scott

    Welcome to the forum,
If you don’t have a .Mac account, you may want to consider it. It has a fairly respectable BackUp feature that’s quite good and very well integrated to your Mac. I strongly recommend it. Can’t say much compared to the speed of Retrospect although it does perform incremental backups as well as a host of other options. Hope that you may find this useful, etc.

  • Need Third Party software recommendation - duplicates management and remova

I have read several dozen discussions addressing duplicate file/song removal from itunes, and many recommend third party software. While there is a 'show exact duplicates' command in itunes at Shift:File->Show exact duplicates, in my case all it did was show all of my songs, 8,440 instead of the actual 4,220 that are in my library. I'm not sure of the purpose of this command, perhaps it works for someone but not me.
Absent the ability to add a user defined column in itunes that would have the capability to perform an Excel-like function to number each row, allowing the sorting of odd/even numbers or some such scheme, I guess users with thousands of songs who have fallen into the duplication trap are required to purchase third party software to correct this, or just go ahead an begin whatever medical procedures purport the relief of carpal tunnel syndrome.
Does anyone have recommendations of software they have actually used, paid, share or free?
    Thanks.

Would that I be so lucky! I reinstalled my Vista OS and was adding back all of the programs and data, so all of the music had the same 'date added'. However, I have just this moment solved my own problem. Here is what worked for me:
    1. I downloaded freeware from the website LCIBrosSolutions.com which does indeed identify duplicates in the iTunes file and will erase them.
    2. However, now you are stuck with broken links (i.e. "!" songs) in your iTunes, and need to eliminate them. What I did was go into the View choices, and picked something that I would never use. In my case, I picked "Episode Number" and added it as a column. Then, I went to "select all" and highlighted all 8000+ song names. Right clicking gave me "Get Info" after the warning, and then I went to the video tab and entered the number 4. I un-highlighted, sorted on the Episode Number Column, and since the song names with no real content would not accept the number 4, they were at the bottom, and were all duplicates. I deleted them.
The way to verify that you do indeed have broken links is to sort by song name, and see that every other one does have an ! by it.

  • I need burning / ripping software recommendation

Five years ago I completed the massive project of taking all my "family" video tapes, digitizing and inputing them into my Power Mac G5, then editing them in iMovie and then burning them onto 30 DVD-R discs.
Now I want to take the 30 DVD-R discs (60 hours of video), input them into my iMac (the iMovie function) and re-edit them and consolidate this 30 DVD-R collection down to 4 DVD-R discs (8 hours of video)
    1. I understand I cannot download my existing DVD-Rs into iMove and re-edit the content for burning onto new DVD-R discs. *_Is this correct?_*
    2. Do I need some special software to do this? If so, I notice there are several types of software for burning / ripping DVD-Rs into iMac. I have found Handbrake and Mac The Ripper (both free) and two programs in the Apple Store, Toast ($99) and Popcorn ($49). Do you recommend any of these applications for bringing my apple edited and burned DVD-Rs (done on my Power Mac G5) into my iMac for editing (creating new projects) and burning new DVD-Rs? My skills on my iMac and within iMovie are about 4 or 5 on a scale of 10, so take "ease of use" into account when you make your recommendation.
    3. Besides my question in #2 above, can you refer me to any specific source on how to bring the DVD-Rs into iMovie for editing?
    Thank you,
    Buster

    Greetings,
Now I want to take the 30 DVD-R discs (60 hours of video), input them into my iMac (the iMovie function) and re-edit them and consolidate this 30 DVD-R collection down to 4 DVD-R discs (8 hours of video)
Ideally you would want to use the original converted files that you used to make the 30 DVDs out of. Each time you convert, burn, and then re-convert a file you lose quality. However if you no longer have those files, then read on.
    1. I understand I cannot download my existing DVD-Rs into iMove and re-edit the content for burning onto new DVD-R discs. *_Is this correct?_*
Correct. The file format contained within a Video DVD is not readable by iMovie. It must be converted.
    2. Do I need some special software to do this?
Yes you do. Apple does not make software that rips video data from DVDs.
    3. Besides my question in #2 above, can you refer me to any specific source on how to bring the DVD-Rs into iMovie for editing?
Here is a nice walk through made by another forum member: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2255575. It includes his suggested software choices.
    Hope that helps.

  • File backup to portable hard drive - software recommendation

Just wanted to share my experience backing up an NB505-N508BN netbook, for those interested in backing up their C drive.
Bottom line: I strongly recommend Free software called "EaseUS Todo" from the CNET downloads site.
Strengths: very good user interface. Does a lot of hand-holding and provides descriptive feedback of what is happening. Also was quite fast: for my 32bit Netbook with Atom processor, creating a 40+GB image file took about 1 hour, and on my 64bit Acer PC with triple-core AMD Athlon II processor, creating a 50GB image file took about 30 - 40 minutes.
[Updated on Aug 3, 2011: Have also been able to do "Incremental Disk partition backup" and "Incremental File backup" with no problem at all. The sw guides you through it neatly. The sw also has tools to pick and explore any backup image file - full or incremental, to see what's in it.]
I used a Verbatim portable drive (usb 3.0, but connected to my usb 2.0 netbook or usb 2.0 PC, so I got only usb 2.0 speed) that came with bundled "Nero" backup sw. Nero was relatively poor in terms of user interface and hand-holding. And it really did not work. The "time left to finish backup" indicator showed tens of hours left and the needle hardly ever moved (I gave up after 40 minutes and achieving 19% of the backup and no further progress, and went over to the CNET site to find something better. CNET editors and users both recommended EaseUS Todo quite highly on their site, and the sw was free, so I downloaded that.
I have no particular affinity for any sw company or brand; I just like sw that works. But if you are a first time backer-up like me, I'd say don't bother with anything else -- download the Free EaseUS Todo from CNET. It works perfectly with the NB505 netbook and you can get it right the first time.

    Wozzy,
it is saying that the S.M.A.R.T Status of the drive is not supported
S.M.A.R.T will only support the drive that you boot from.
Like Miriam says you can use SuperDuper. You can also use Carbon Copy Cloner:
    http://www.bombich.com/
With both these applications you can schedule periodic backups.
Will I be able to use with a USB external?
Yes. The 2.0 USBs are bootable but only w/ Intel Macs.
Unfortunately I've already purchased a WD USB external.
Yes depending on the model there have been reports of problems w/ these drives.
Also, will I be able to set the scheduled backups so that it's only pulling specific...i.e. docs, music, photos..and new data each time?
W/ Super Duper I think so. W/ CCC you can:
"* Fast, incremental backups copy only the items that have changed since the last backup
    * Archival backup archives items that have been deleted from the source
    * Back up to hard drives or to disk images"
It's free but if you like it, like I do, you can donate money to support them as I have.

    Hi Connie
No problem! I think there are 25 or so ... it's really a very straightforward program to use, I suggest you have a look at the tutorials and then jump in and see how you get on. You can always post back if you have specific questions (though I do recommend you post in the iWeb forum section, just because you'll get more specific help there).

  • Desktop Publishing Software Recommendations Needed

I am writing a book. It's about 300 pages and I'm using Pages. It looks pretty nice in pages, but Pages is not desktop publishing software. It can be awkward when trying to change the objects or backgrounds in numerous sections (not as awkward as Word though). It also doesn't create an index.
I can't afford $500 to $1000 for one of the name brands.
Please recommend some DTP software that might be useful in creating a book that I've written in Pages. I'm looking for something that might make my workflow more efficient.
    Thank you.

Apple still saves Adobe PDF 1.3. With this version of the document description model, Apple is limited to the standard rendering specification ISO 15930 PDF/X-3 which deals with management of colour information, but not with management of character information (semantic information and structure information). ISO 19005-1:2005 PDF/A is a standard rendering specification based on PDF 1.4 as well for management of colour information as for management of character information (structure information and semantic information).
In other words, the support for management of colour information is there but is truly tough to use and support for management of character information is not there at all.
It is incorrect that QuarkXPress is usable for computerised full character cataloguing with PDF. Quark management mailed the technical press (me and a chief editor) that support for searchable PDF was not intended in version 7.
Adobe had no software whatsoever that supported structure information and semantic information in 2002; that has come trickle by trickle and if e.g. in Adobe InDesign CS (ID39 a searchable PDF is placed in an InDesign page and re-exported, the nested PDF is not searchable.
