Solaris 2.5.1 upgrade to Solaris 7

Hey guys, got a few questions for you. I have a Solaris 2.5.1 machine that the customer would like to take to Solaris 7. What is the easiest way to accomplish this, and do you guys know of any documentation online anywhere that might detail the steps involved?
Thanks for any input you can give me.
Ben.........

Philip,
I don't have such problems on SUN [sparc] Solaris 9 with java version 1.4.2, Oracle 9.2.0.4 and the "classes12.jar" JDBC driver.
The "classes12.jar" file is located in the
"$ORACLE_HOME/jdbc/lib" directory.
Here is a snippet of my code:
String sql = "select DATE_COL from TAB where ROWNUM < 2";
Connection dbConn = null;
PreparedStatement stmt = null;
ResultSet rs = null;
String url = "jdbc:oracle:thin:scott/tiger@host:1521:orcl";
try {
  Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
  dbConn = DriverManager.getConnection(url);
  stmt = dbConn.prepareCall(sql);
  rs = stmt.executeQuery();
  while (rs.next()) {
    System.out.println(rs.getObject(1));
  }Here's the output:
2004-08-08 11:08:16.0All NLS parameters have the default values.
The problem may be in your code. Perhaps you would care to post the relevant parts?
Good Luck,
Avi.

    I would like to upgrade GIMP in Solaris 10 to the version used in Solaris Express DE.
    What is the best way to do this?

    i didnt however i wasnt hammering it. if the load was expected to be high i would have done the io layout diff (try and follow some of oracles ideas: SAME for one, if possible).
    some depends on the load and the load from the other zones. you can use allocate resource limits to give more priority to more important zones or make sure you have enough resources to start. what type of load are you expecting?

    It seems like the driver for that device does not exist. Since the system installed successfully it means that it S10 did find a disk. I wonder if that was a different disk than the default disk. Please boot to the miniroot and check the disk info.

  • Upgrade to 10g on Solaris 9

    Hello!
    System: solaris 9 sparc 64-bit
    I'm about to install a new 10g home and create a dummy database on an existing database server running 9i (prod), and then upgrade the 10g db with EXP/IMP from 9i database, leaving the 9i database intact.
    Reviewing the installation document on tahti.oracle.com for Solaris, i noticed that I'm missing an OS package, SUNWlibms and also PL/SQL native compilation (SUN ONE Studio 8 c and c++ 5.5 or gcc 3.4.2).
    Would it be safe to just install these packages.. or could it affect the already running Oracle 9i installation?
    Any comment, experience regarding this is most valued!
    Thanks

    The package SUNWlibms should not affect current installs.
    You will only need Sun ONE Studio 8 (C and C++ 5.5) or gcc 3.4.2 if you plan to implement PL/SQL Native Compilation - if not, you can skip this requirement

  • Solaris 7 to 8 Upgrade with Oracle 8.1.5 (opinions and issues to note)

    Hi all,
    Think the subject says it all..
    I have a Solaris 7 server running on Sparc E250 with Oracle8.1.5 on it. It shows that it s a 64bit system when booting up and it uses normal Solaris filesystem setup (no RAID on it) .
    If I were to upgrade it to Solaris 8, what are the issues I need to take note.
    Thanks.
    Ld

    This could be a big headache....but if there is a need to upgrade your OS from 7 to 8
    then you should be ready for a good backup plan....meaning, if something goes wrong at any
    point in the process, you could easily revert back to your old system environment.
    If I were the one to do this, I will do the following.
    1) I will make use of mirroring. It will be good if you could do it for the entire filesystem
    of your OS and your DB.
    2) Once I have a mirror, I will simply detach the other mirror and do my upgrade.
    Anything goes wrong, I will simply make use of the other mirror to have my old system back.
    When you upgrade your OS from 7 to 8, I had seen lots of problem where it could not complete the
    process. And the reason is the size of the Filesystem for Solaris 8 specially the root requires
    a big size as to any previous version. i usually just install from scratch. But the problem is if
    your filesystem for the OS and Applications like your DB are crossing each other then you may have
    to rebuilt your Applications too. Unless you had partition them such that they are totally separated.
    When you had succesfully installed your Solaris 8, then your next headache is to make sure
    all your applicatiions including your DB will be running fine with the new OS. Usually they
    would not as they may need to be patched. So that means you have to check the Oracle websites
    as for what are the patches needed to make your Oracle runs properlly in the new OS.
    Most important is your backup plan, which is your mirrored-disk of your running environment.
    Also you have to make a Plan of everything. Doing this will really take a lot of time.
    Good luck. I have done this before.....I'm pretty sure you could do it.
    just remember , your back-up plan should always be available anytime.

  • Upgrade of 8.1.7.4  on Solaris 5.8 to Oracle 10g

    Hi Gurus-
    We are planning to upgrade some of the legacy databases to 10g.
    They are all 8.1.7.4 instances on Solaris 5.8 with Standby configuration.
    1)Is it possible to upgrade the instances on the same OS version(5.8) to 10g?
    2)Where can I find the related documents which detail the supported OS versions pertaining to 10g?
    3)Since the environment consists of Standby how can we minimise the downtime of upgrade? Any best practices and proven methods please.
    Need to convert the existing DMTs to LMTs as well.
    Appreciate your valuable inputs
    Thanks,
    newDBA

    Hi newDBA,
    to answer your questions:
    1) Yes, according to Metalink ==> Certify ... Solaris 5.8 is certified to run an Oracle 10gR2 installation:
    Operating System: Solaris Operating System (SPARC) Version 8
    Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition Version 10gR2 64-bit
    N/A Version N/A
    Status: Certified
    Product Version Note:
    None available for this product.
    Certification Note:
    Existing Patch Sets:
    10.2.0.2 Requires patch 5117016
    10.2.0.3
    10.2.0.4
    2) See first of all the CERTIFY button on Metalink and make sure also to check the release notes and the installation guide for Oracle on Solaris:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/relnotes.102/b15689/toc.htm
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b15690/toc.htm
    3a) Minimize the downtime with a standby
    Your standby will be upgraded implicitly - this means you upgrade the production database and you restart your standby in MOUNT mode in the new environment you've installed on the standby machine as well. Once you switch your standby to ALTER DATABASE RECOVER MANAGED STANDBY DATABASE DISCONNECT; then it'll start synchronizing with your already upgraded production system.
    During the regular upgrade either with DBUA or CATUPGRD.SQL there's not much possibility to shrink your downtime. You should create dictionary stats right before the upgrade but mainly the time it'll take is dependent on the number of options/components you've installed in your current database.
    Recompilation by the way will be done automatically in parallel - so CPU power will save you some time here.
    But always the question will be:
    Can you accept approx 1-4 hours of downtime or not?
    3b) Dictionary Managed Tablespaces to Locally Managed Tablespaces
    As long as you don't touch the system tablespace this can be done online with no additional downtime. But as soon as you convert also the SYSTEM tablespace you have to startup your database at this point in RESTRICT EXCLUSIVE mode - which in fact means downtime.
    Hope this helps - kind regards
    Mike

  • Upgrading Solaris 10 from 32-bit to 64-bit in a VirtualBox VM

    Hello,
    I am running 32-bit Sol 10 u5 x86 as a guest in a Sun VirtualBox (Vbox) virtual machine on a 32-bit WinXP host with 64-bit VT-capable Xeon processors, and am considering upgrading Solaris 10 to 64-bit using the latest version of Vbox (2.0.0). After installing WinXP Professional x64 and the 64-bit version of Vbox, will I have to completely re-install Sol 10 to get it to run in 64-bit, or is there some way to get it to 64-bit without a re-install? The Vbox forums suggested that I post this question on a Solaris forum, as they don't know the answer.
    They apparently also do not know if Windows XP x64 is a compatible host OS on which to run 64-bit guests. They list only Vista, Linux, and OpenSolaris as supported 64-bit host OSs. Has anyone used WinXP x64 as a host for Vbox 64-bit guests? Due to policy, Vista is not available to me on my system/network.
    Thank you...

    The x86 installer will place both 32-bit and 64-bit code on the disk.
    The loader fired by GRUB will attempt to detect the proper hardware and launch the correct kernel.
    Other portions of the upgrade could conceivably cause a problem, but having the CPUs go from 32-bit only to 64-bit capable shouldn't be an issue. You don't have to make any changes.

  • How to upgrade oracle 32 to 64 bit on sun solaris x86 64 bit OS?

    Hi,
    I want to upgrade/convert 32 bit Oracle Database 10.2.0.2 to 64 bit database. Existing 32 bit database is RAC and it is running on Sun Solaris X86 64 bit OS.
    First, I want to know is it possible?
    If yes, then what are the exact steps?

    Hi,
    Such a migration can be done, just follow the steps in Metalink note 62290.1
    It is important to remember that 64-bit database requires more shared pool memory so you should increase your shared pool size.

  • Solaris 8 upgrade to solaris 10 terminology questio

    I have been researching upgrading my E420R and V440's from solaris 8 to solaris 10. I have solaris 10 cds and am confused about the terminology that said "If you want to upgrade a system that has non-global zones installed you have to use the DVDs". There are no zones in solaris 8 so is the entire system considered the global zone? Can I just upgrade with the CDs I have.
    I just want to upgrade (not live upgrade, etc).
    Thank yo ufor clearing this up.

    I'm a little confused about the statement about the zone. Because it is solaris 8, is the entire OS considered a 1 global zone?Solaris 8 has never had zone support nor will it ever have zone support. So from that perspective I guess you could call it a global zone if you wish but at the time Solaris 8 was active the concept of a global zone did not exist. For the purposes of your question, yes, it's only a global zone with no non global zones.
    You're reading way to much into this.

  • Solaris 8 to Solaris 10 upgrade for oracle 11i

    Hi
    Need to upgrade my 11i (11.5.9) apps from Solaris 8 to Solaris 10
    It will also be a 32 bit to 64 bit conversion
    Has anyone done this before. or can specify the any major obstacles.
    Thanks

    Dear Bansi
    I did something similar on HP-UX but you can mainly follow this
    1- Check Certification matrix against Solaris 10
    2- Install 64 bit engine of 9iR2 using 9iR2 CD's without creation of a database
    3- Patch the engine with the same patch level your database on it [9.2.0.3 is standard DB level for 11.5.9 CD's ] If you want to update this level than the existing to be latest [ie 9.2.0.6 check notes and certification matrix] you should do this step after next step
    4- Attach your 11.5.9 database to that engine
    5- Copy configurations files from old engine to the new engine [appsutil]
    6- Copy Applications in similar locations [If migrate to another server using Solaris 10]
    7- If you will change any Application paths or database path consider changing context file and rerun autoconfig

    syncing file systems... done

    We got the same error on two V880 production machines going from 8 to 10 and
    since we could not afford the downtime to rebuild we had to research the problem
    and found the precise opposite of the previous poster.
    We had too many packages.
    Specifically the Solaris 8 package SUNWcarx was not backed out on the upgrade.
    Since there is no SUNWcarx package in Solaris 10 we were left with Solaris 8 drivers
    in /platform and /kernel.
    The upgrade seemed to have been deficient due to a pkginfo deficiency. For some reason
    pkginfo on the Solaris 8 box did not list SUNWcarx , but pkgchk -v SUNWcarx would list
    out its files. If upgrade used pkginfo to figure out what packages to back out and failed
    to use all available info ( from pkgchk ) then it would leave a package.
    So the solution for us was to just delete the files. Here is a script that will flag all the bad files for you. It asumes you have your new Solaris 10 mounted on /tmp/mnt/0 and checks
    all the files in the OS directories. You will find that all the bad files are dated between
    the year 2000 and 2004, with a few exceptions from January 2005. All the files flagged should be a subset of the files pkgchk -v SUNWcarx generates on Solaris 8.
    Some of the files in the SUNWcarx package have been adopted by Solaris 10 so you cannot just delete all the files in the package file list generated under Solaris 8.
    Anyway here is the script:
    #!/bin/bash
    # This script checks every file under /kernel, /platform, /lib, /sbin and /bin.
    # A logfile called CHECK_KERNEL_LOG_${NOW} is created
    # Any file that does not match its package is listed.
    # Conf files tend to have modtime, size and checksum differences because these are use modified.
    # The error to look for is "No information associated with pathname",
    # this means it does not belong to any package.
    # There is a good chance it can be deleted if it is an os directory.
    # Script assumes root mounted at /tmp/mnt/0, change MOUNTED_AT variable if different
    # Every file checked is listed, only those with error messages are of concern
    #set -xv
    getword ()
    awk '{print $'$1' }'
    timestamp ()
    date '+%Y_%j__%B_%d__%H:%M:%S'
    # pkgchk can only check 1000 files at a shot so........
    read_900_and_check(){
    LINES_COUNTED=0
    CHECK_LIST=/tmp/LIST_OF_FILES_TO_CHECK_${NOW}
    ALL_CHECK_LIST=/tmp/ALL_LIST_OF_FILES_TO_CHECK_${NOW}
    while read ALINE
    do
    LINES_COUNTED=`expr $LINES_COUNTED + 1 `
    echo $ALINE >> $CHECK_LIST
    if [ $LINES_COUNTED -gt 900 ]
    then
    pkgchk -v -R $MOUNTED_AT -i $CHECK_LIST
    LINES_COUNTED=0
    cat $CHECK_LIST >> $ALL_CHECK_LIST
    rm $CHECK_LIST
    fi
    done
    pkgchk -v -R $MOUNTED_AT -i $CHECK_LIST
    cat $CHECK_LIST >> $ALL_CHECK_LIST
    # MAIN #
    NOW=`timestamp`
    MOUNTED_AT=/tmp/mnt/0
    exec > CHECK_KERNEL_LOG_${NOW} 2>&1
    cd $MOUNTED_AT
    ( du -a kernel
    du -a lib
    du -a platform
    du -a bin
    du -a sbin ) | getword 2 | sed 's/^/\//' | read_900_and_check
    # END OF SCRIPT
    hopefully I cut and pastes that correctly.....
    addtionally here are the deletes we needed to repair the upgrade:

  • Solaris 8 - 10 upgrade options

    I want to upgrade a Sol. 8 sytem to Sol. 10 but acomplish 2 objectives in the process:
    1.) Reduce the system disk mounts pts (/var,/opt) to just /
    2.) Attempt to do a UPGRADE install so as to not have to restore all my custom apps.
    I tried a quick UPGRADE install and it failed during the testing upgrade profiile - /usr on Sol. 8 disk is only 2GB big and Sol. 10 needed 4GB.
    I tried a UPGRADE install again but specified a backup media of a spare partition on a spare dirve that is the size of the Sol. 8 system disk but it too failed during install on restoring /usr to 2GB partition.
    I then did the INITIAL install option and could specify my own partition layout and afterwards restore all custom files but it is very time consuming.
    Is there a way to upgrade the Sol. 8 system that would allow me to specify the partion layout - short of the INITIAL install option and have solaris install do the restores for me?
    Thanks in advance,
    Dino

    Answered my Q - I used Live Upgrade!
    With a spare drive >= size of current Sol 8 system disk I was able to copy Sol 8 O/S and perform Sol 10 UPGRADE install via Live Upgrade and have it combine /var and /opt back into root - NEAT-OOOO!!
    Only bug - Live Upgrade set mount permission on /usr to 700 that caused some initial problems until I booted off DVD and chmod-ed /usr to 755. Now everything is OK.
