Solaris 8/07 x86, wireless intel 2200bg networking
Just finished a dvd-based install of solaris 8/07 x86 (not opensolaris) and everything good, except wireless networking.
Before the install, I ran the suitability/compatibility tester and it vetted my wifi and everything else.
ifconfig doesn't show my iwi interface. no /dev/iwi? either. And no wificonfig tool anywhere on the hard drive.
Did I miss a step in the install?
What do I need to do to be able to wifi on this supported wifi?
I will eventually try the opensolaris, but I have 640MB and the opensolaris doesn't install unless it sees 768 MB.
N.B: openBSD and BSD/nixes experienced ... but a little new to solaris so any and all pointers and details appreciated.
Thanks,
/Scott

ifconfig doesn't show my iwi interface.Did you do:
ifconfig -a plumb
ifconfig -a
This is the answer to a really FAQ:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"ifconfig -a" on Solaris will only show "plumb"ed interfaces.
Plumb your interface(s) first!
If you don't know the name (or index#) use "ifconfig -a plumb" to plumb all (that wasn't already plumbed)!
"plumb" is to power on, and load and initialize the driver for the relevant interface.
Solaris 10 on x86 Integrated Intel PRO/100 VM not recognized
I just installed Solaris 10 on a compaq evo 510 and the adapter is not recognized. I did not get any network config questions during the install. I have ran sys-unconfig and same thing. I typw ifconfig -a and I only see the loopback. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am very new to the unix environment. This card appears to be on the HCL and I have searched everywhere and tried many different things to no avail. thanks in advance.
For booting Arch you will need to update bios in ThinkPad 600E.
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc … sdin36.exe
After that, you will be able to boot from cd without any problem, but problem with network is still persistent. There seems to be some issue between PCMCIA interface and sound on ThinkPad 600E, but I still havent found a way to fix it. -
Installation of solaris 10 on x86 intel dual core or core 2 duo
hi all,
while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
/ -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
after selecting it boots with solaris and
after few seconds it restarts
please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors
looking for the good replyOK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Communication
Conexant
HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Network
Intel Corporation
*82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Multimedia
Intel Corporation
HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
Thanks. -
Connecting Solaris 8 (Intel) to Network
I just received Solaris 8 for the Intel platform and was able to successfully install it on a Intel pc but I'm not able to connect the pc to my home network. The pc has a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 lan card and I really don't know where to start. Could anyone please explain in general terms what I must do to connect a Solaris 8 pc to a network?
DOCUMENT ID: 1105-02
SYNOPSIS: Adding Network Support to Solaris
OS: Solaris/SunOS
PLATFORM: Intel
OS VERSION: 2.x
TECH AREA: Network
PRODUCT: Config
KEYWORDS: add network card adapter install file directory adding host nic
driver
DESCRIPTION:
When a workstation is placed in service without a network card, or none
is recognized during initial software installation, several files and
directories will not be available to the operating system if future
networking support is desired.
SOLUTION:
Solaris will not presume upon any particular network configuration if it
is unable to identify supported network hardware at the factory default
addresses. Hence, the installation scripts will not prompt the user for
network-specific configuration items like ip address, netmasks, hardware
settings, subnets, etc.
All of these can be added by hand after the machine has had Solaris
installed on it.
Workaround - Adding support for a network card to an existing system
To add network support to a Solaris workstation previously installed
without a supported network card driver requires adding/changing certain
files in the OS according to which network card is to be added. A
network card that is listed in the Hardware Compatibility List for that
platform (x86, Sparc, or PowerPC) must also be present on the system bus
and identified by the operating system to reside at supported addresses.
The following instructions for identifying a card will apply to x86 and
PowerPC platforms, for the most part. For the Sparc platforms the Open
Boot Prom is able to identify any SBUS card and, in future versions, any
PCI or PCMCIA (PC Card) device that is installed. Note also, that for
PCI devices, some ISA, MCA and EISA devices, as well as some PCMCIA
devices - the addresses, IRQs, memory, and DMA resources will be
assigned by the BIOS or a configuration utility and the driver will be
able to read the info for the device when it is loaded. Check the
Driver Configuration Guide for how to configure your particular device.
First, identify the make and model of your network card and write down
which addresses it occupies in terms of interrupt vector (IRQ), port
address range, DMA channel (if any), and shared memory address range.
Then find the driver configuration file in the /kernel/drv sub-directory
and examine this file to make sure that the addresses on the card will
be seen. For example, on Solaris 2.4 and earlier, the SMC (WD) Model
8003 or 8013 configuration file is /kernel/drv/smc.conf. It should look
similar to the following:
#ident "@(#)smc.conf 1.8 93/04/02 SMI"
# Factory default setting.
name="smc" class="sysbus" intr=5,3 ioaddr=0x280
reg=0x280,0xD0000,0x2000;
This means that the factory default for this card is at interrupt 3,
priority 5 and port address 280 hex, at memory address D0000 hex with an
8k memory range.
If you are instead using a supported 3COM or token-ring adapter, the
driver names for these are "el.conf" & "elx.conf" for 3COM,
or "tr" for
token- ring. Note that as of Solaris 2.5 some drivers that are unique
to a platform (i.e. - not common to all the Solaris platforms, like
ISA), will be found in /platform/{PLATFORM_NAME}/kernel/drv instead of
/kernel/drv. For the x86 you use i86pc in place of {PLATFORM_NAME}.
Secondly, when logged in as root, bring the driver into service. Do
this by typing drvconfig, devlinks, and touch /reconfigure at successive
"#" prompts. Type "prtconf" to test for the existence of the
0th
instance of the driver.
Workaround - Configuring the system to use the network card
You are now ready to modify the filesystem as required. Ensure that the
following directories, files, named-pipes, and symbolic links are
present and have the designated permissions, owner, and group. Those
with a file size of zero can sim -
Two things stand out:
It appears that you are using your internal wireless card,(Intel 2200BG chipset) which may not support packet injection. Some chipsets won't work at all, some can be patched.
Simple fix: grab a wireless card (usb) from ebay that is known to work. My favorite is the netgear WG111v2, about $10.00 U.S.
The best place to start for you would be http://www.aircrack-ng.org/documentation.html
You can check your chipset and find any patches you may need, as well as follow their tutorials.
You tube also has a lot of video tutorials.
Good luck.
Solaris 10 Problem with Intel board network interface
I've just installed Solaris 10 on my Intel board with integrated fast ethernet interface. Installation went smoothly, except for the networking. I've already followed the guide on this link http://solaris-x86.org/documents/tutorials/network.mhtml. The problem is, I couldn't find anything such as /dev/iprb0 under /dev directory (iprb is for Intel Ethernet 100 VE). When checking from interactive boot, I got this line:
pci@0,0/pci8086,244e@1e/pci8086,3052@8 (which is the device for the ethernet on the pci bus)
Since there's no link such as iprb0 under /dev, I checked the /devices/pci@0,0 directory, and found these:
pci8086,244e@1e (directory, and in it, it contains no device file)
pci8086,244e@1e:devctl
My question is, how could I enable the network? Making link under /dev to pci8086,244e@1e:devctl doesn't seem to work. So I guessed there should be device file (ie. pci8086,3052@8) under pci8086,244e@1e directory. But how can I get this device file? Should I do mknod command? But I don't know how to get major and minor number under solaris.
Please help me... I am used to Linux, but Solaris is a totally different animal to me.
EdgarIf you didn't get any messages about iprb iline value being out of range, simply run (as root):
ifconfig iprb0 plumb
Otherwise run the BIOS setup and disable plug & play os. Then run the above command. -
I've been doing some maintenance and updating on a friends laptop and just updated a driver from the Intel site for their Intel Pro Wireless 2200BG Wireless adapter.
(Set to channel 2, using WPA-PSK encryption - working fine before the update) After installing it - the wireless won't connect to my Homehub v1 6.2.6.E
The adapter is working fine and seeing various networks with good signal strength. They also have a HH at home, also v1 - I haven't tried that one yet.
My other devices work fine on the wifi. I rebooted both hub and computer. The adapter can see several networks - I tried turning off the windows firewall - that didn't make any difference.
It tries to connect but never acquires a network address. Device manager reports no problems or conflicts. Intel (R) Pro wireless 2200BG Intel - 19.12.2007 9.0.4.39 - w29n515s.dll 9.0.4.95 - netwc32.dll 9.0.4.95 netwr32.dll I've checked the various settings, and tried setting it to connect via 802.11b only instead of g I don't know about the various other settings.
Anyone any ideas? The machine has a non connected ethernet adapter, and a mysterious other adapter Anyone any ideas? Otherwise I have just messed up my friends wireless connection. I'm fairly sure the adapter is working fine, it is just not connecting with the hub which makes me think there are some defaults that have changed. I see a fair bit about these 2200BG Wireless adapters and BT Homehub wifie problems in google - but not sure if it applies as the 2200BG was working before the driver "update".
My broadband secrets and tipsOkay I've given up with the Intel 2200BG- I've jumped through all the hoops I can think of - uninstalled the adapter replaced the original manufacturers old drivers, uninstalled again, updated with Intel drivers from last year, tried on an unencrypted HHub network. Anyone recommend a replacement internal WiFi adapter for the Intel 2200BG Mini PCI to go in a Hi-Grade Green 553 Notebook? I've also tried running the hub and adapter in the b mode only, with the hub also only running in b mode.
It can detect all the networks and the software all works fine, it it can not connect. No matter WHAT I do.
Must be compatible with Win XP Home, the Hi Grade laptop and the BTHomeHub v1- and come with compatible drivers.
They look to be reasonably priced, and I'd rather get some friendly supportive peer to peer advice here before trusting myself to PCNurld.
If the worst comes to the worst I could always get a usb wifi adapter and forget the internal interface.
Again - thanks for any help
How can I set ne2000 network adapter in Solaris 8 for x86
I am a beginner. I can not set a ne2000 compatible network adapter(isa) in Solaris 8 for x86.
I do follows:
write the file ' /kernel/drv/nei.conf ' with ' name="nei" parent="isa" reg=0x1,0x0300,0x1f interrupts=10 '
and use the command: drvconfig -i nei --failed
use the command: drv_add -i nei; devlinks; --there is no the command drv_add
use the command: touch /reconfigure; reboot
after reboot, use the command: ifconfig nei0 plumb --failed
Did I miss something obvious, or what driver should I use?After backing up the suspect hard drive, I ran Disk Repair on it and found no problems. Then ran Disk Warrior again and no problems. It is a Hitachi, btw.
As for the PrefPane issue: Repairing disk permissions on the main volume and on the partition that holds the system did not make any difference.
Reinstalled the 10.5.8 upgrade, performed safe start and then repaired permissions again. Still getting a blank PrefPane for network.
Next step is to try and trash the System Configuration plist and Network Interfaces plist. -
And are there instructions on reading the diagnostic log file?
I know that CKIP is considered "non-standard", or so I was told and that TKIP replaces that, but we need CKIP. -
Solaris 8 on x86: been there, am back
Just a quick opinion on my Solaris experience: it's as evil as Win2K when it comes to partitioning, except it's even harder (in my case not possible) to get lilo to boot Solaris, even on a primary partition... it's not quicker than Linux or FreeBSD, as user-hostile as *BSD, the install feels clunky and awkward...
CDE is awful, even XFCE beats it by miles, I'm glad GNOME is there but not for x86 alas??
ash could really be replaced by bash or anything with command line completion for instance, etc etc.
I won't blame them for lack of hardware support, but as it is I was without network under Solaris (USB ADSL), so really there wasn't much to keep me using it. Except it's messed up my partitions badly enough that I had to reinstall Linux and FreeBSD...
I am sure quite a few of you disagree with that, but I haven't seen any reason to stick to Solaris on my x86. Dissenting opinions please feel free to do so, I am disappointed but curious nevertheless...Hello,
Actually, I have had a miserable experience attempting to install Solaris 8 on "ANY" INTEL hardware I have. At least, you were able to get it to install. It's a shame though, Sun and others complain about how Microsoft is trying to monopolize, but as much as I do agree for the most part, I have to give it to MS. Their OS' 95/98/W2K/NT, they all work on "ANY" hardware it seems as long as you can get the drivers from the manufacturer -- from the oldest to the newest machines.
For Sun to enjoy a better share of the market, it needs to spend more time ensuring its OS works(even if it's not supported) on most INTEL H/W. This will ensure people, like myself(consultants) who are looking at new possibilities for Unix can seriously consider the product by evaluating it on simple machines and once proven can actually consider the product as part of a recommendation to customers. What this has reaffirmed, is that, the big 3 Unix houses -- HP, SUN, and IBM have a great product on Mid-to-Mainframes but are still sleeping while MS makes a BIG whole in their pocket with software that works on ANY! platform or H/W. The reality is that I would be hard pressed to recommend Linux for any "Prime Time" production(don't get me wrong, Linux is just fine and I use it and will continue to use it, but it's not ready for prime time) application and although I do not believe MS NT or 2K has the maturity of Unix, it certainly stands out in terms of viability. If this is another way to sell more proprietary boxes, I'll just say -- remember what happened to apple? Great product with a very smaaall market share...
As you can tell, I am deeply dissapointed because SUN make awsome workstations and servers and can easly translate that success to the INTEL platform by having their software run on more H/W(even if it's not supported). This would definitely go a long way, in my opinion, to gain the market share they seem to be wanting to acquire since they did take MS to court.
Very Dissapointed,
Frank -
Tecra A4: Wlan Intel 2200bg not stable with 802.11 G WLan
With the latest driver re-installed (9.0.4.39), I've found that a connection to a "g" network was unstable. (Slightly better than before re-installing, when it would connect to a "g" network but not pass any data.)
With both a BT Homehub and now a DLink DSL-2640R router (TalkTalk), I have found that one way to get a stable connection with the latest driver is to set the router to use only "b" networking. But this is slower.
Until I got a different router (recent change of telco provider) I had just assumed it was a BT Homehub problem (believe me, I had spent some time trying to resolve it!). However, now that I have tried two routers and found the same problem, I thought it might be an issue relating to the setup of the laptop...
I've kept the many wireless driver downloads that I've installed, and tried to think back to happy time when both laptop and homehub were happy to communicate on a "g" network. So I went back to driver version 9.0.4.17, and guess what, all the problems have gone away with the new router and it's happily connected to a "g" network.
Normally the advice is to use the latest driver version, so why would I have success with an older driver. What have I done wrong? I tried different types of encryption available and it hasn't affected the problem.
I've got the box ticked to allow windows to configure my network settings. I while ago I did try using the Proset Software, but that stopped the ConfigFree from running properly so I went back to the original set up.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I need to do to get a stable connection to a "g" network with an Intel 2200bg with the latest driver (9.0.4.39)? I'm wary that I may run into some other issues if I continue to use the older driver?There are always compatibility issues with Wireless products, especially when connecting with different brands. Manufacturers are constantly updating the drivers to fix issues, but sometimes it can introduce problems with older Adapters such as the 2200BG.
First thing to do is update the firmware on your Router, then update the drivers on the Wireless Adapter. If later drivers don't work, it wont hurt to revert back to a previous version.
You can also try changing the Advanced settings in the Wireless Adapters Properties in Device Manager. For example, try setting it to "802.11g only", try a different channel, try different power settings, etc.. -
Intel 2200BG NOT Fixed with Drivers!!!
I installed the Intel Pro/Wireless 2200BG mini PCI WLAN card into my Windows XP Pro SP2 Toshiba laptop (Toshiba Satellite 5205-S505). It will not access my Linksys BEFW11S4 v.2 Router!
Specifically, it will not connect to this router with (128-bit) WEP turned on. It WILL if I turn WEP off. My Sony Viao has no issues connecting.
I have installed the new 9.0.4.27 [1-19-07].
PLEASE HELP!!!!Message Edited by Byrdman on 03-21-200709:30 PMTry rolling back the wireless drivers in the Windows Device Manager to the previous version. My wife's laptop (Dell Inspiron 600m) has the Intel 2200BG wireless and she was also having trouble connecting to one Linksys wireless router, although the laptop would connect fine at her other offices (all with same wireless security settings -- not necessarily same hardware tho) and our Linksys router at home.
She told me after rolling the drivers back a version she was then able to connect to this particular network that was giving her grief. -
How print duplex on Solaris 10 0508 x86 ?
Hello,
I just installed Solaris 10 0508 x86 on a Ultra 20. We have a networked HP laserjet 8150dn printer. What is the option to print duplex?
Previously on Solaris 10, 1106, I followed the instructions on http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/content/submitted/duplex_printing.html and was able to print double-sided.
However, now on update 0508, the same lp and lpadmin option "-o sides=two-sided-short-edge" doesn't work - still prints single-sided. What gives? Please help me save a tree!
These lp or lpadmin options didn't work either:
"-o duplex"
"-o sides=duplex"
Also looked at HP's SOLe134.PKG, but it's for SPARC, not x86 - couldn't find a download for x86.
Thanks!
Edited by: onetree on Jul 16, 2008 9:36 PMI'm not sure if there was some sort of corruption, but I eventually resolved the issue by removing and readding the printing-related packages from the CD:
SUNWpcr
SUNWpcu
SUNWpsr
SUNWpsu
SUNWpsf
SUNWscplp
SUNWspman
SUNWscpu
and then installing a default local virtual printer before the network one:
# lpadmin -p new-printer -v /dev/term/a -T PS -I postscript..
# enable new-printer
# accept new-printer
# lpstat -t -
New laptop won't print wirelessly to a network printer
I just bought a new laptop running windows 7, and it wont print to my photosmart c5580 that is networked and wired through my computer (desktop) and shared running windows XP. I also know that my computer has to be on for this to happen, I also know that the printer is networked correctly cause I have another desktop that prints fine wirelessly through the network. The laptop recognizes the printer as well as other files that are being shared, I have also downloaded the windows 7 driver for that printer, as well as change the name of the workgroup to match the rest of the computers on the network. Any help will be appreciated.
Hi,
There is a challenge sharing a 32 bit driver from XP to a 64 bit version of Windows 7, as a software installation defaults to 64 bit. The exact opposite happens on a 64 bit XP to 32 bit Windows 7. The solution is to use Add a device, and check the x86 box when prompted. Here are the links to HP documents which should help you resolve the issue:
