well friend, thanks again for all your help. i found a lot of help on another thread if you're interested: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1195713&tstart=0
regardless, here's some things i did that seem to have helped for now... significantly speeding up my web browsing:
1. I changed from WPA/WPA 2 to just WPA 2 (this seemed to have helped the most)
2. I added two 'general' DNS addresses in my preferences/network settings (this also seemed to help):
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
3. under my preferences/network settings, I completely turned off Configure IPv6. (I don't know if this has helped but it was suggested and it doesn't seem to have hurt)
Unless I'm connected to a cisco client, I still have very slow to no browsing on the apple discussions pages but all other pages seem to be working now without cisco.
until next time.

  • Safari problems with certain web pages dowloading a page instead of display

on some sites when i click a link to go to or open a page, it downloads the link. this happens with ebay for example where when i click on a link, it downloads ebay.dll instead (i know, weird). and now, ebay.com isnt even opening - i just get a blank page. it happens with .asp pages and .js pages too. everything seems to work fine in firefox. i was also having problems with gmail which would not allow me to click on links and if i typed, it would jump to another field on the screen if i typed a non-alpha character (i know, weird). that seems to be fixed now and i can use gmail.
not sure what the problem is. any ideas?

You would have to remove (uninstall) or reinstall the Georgia font if it is currently corrupted.
You can use the System File Checker to check for missing and corrupted font files.
It needs to be run from an Elevated Command Prompt.
Open a cmd.exe window as Administrator:
    Start, click Programs, click Accessories
Right-click Command Prompt, and choose "Run as administrator"
    Click past the UAC Screen
After the cmd.exe prompt, type: sfc.exe /scannow and press Enter

  • How can I have Safari save my opened web pages when I quit so that when I open next time they will be there?

How can I have Safari save my opened web pages when I quit so that when I open next time they will be there? I can do that in Firefox automatically, but can't seem to find how to do it in Safari.  I'm thinking maybe it's just now possible yet?

From your Safari menu bar click History / Reopen All Windows from Last Session.
    Or..
Glims can  re open tabs from a previous session if that helps.

Compatible with Snow Leopard v10.6 and Safari 5+ and it's free.

  • Safari will not open web pages anymore on my MacBook.

I am running Mac OSX 10.7.5 Lion, Safari 6.0.2.  Although I have had occasional problems with slow loading web pages in the past,  it wasn't until yesterday that pages stopped loading entirely. I am using my iPad to post this question. The iPad, my iPod Touch and my wife's MacBook (running the exact same software) are all working normally. I have re-cycled my modem and AirPort Extreme, but the problem still exists. One strange twist - I use Evernote to keep notes and as a journal. When Evernote was open and I was using Safari unsuccessfully, I noticed that Evernote had opened 2 web pages (Apple Support) in Evernote as notes! While investigating I found that in the Develop menu, the 1st item "Open Page With" shows "Evernote 5.0.4" but not Safari or anything else as an alternative. On the Safari Preferences Menu, General, the Default web browser shows Safari 6.0.2, but on the drop-down menu Evernote 5.0.4 appears as the alternate browser.I have sent a message to Evernote support, which may be answered in a few days if I'm lucky. I have deleted Evernote from the Extensions menu which did nothing - I can still open it as usual. I have also restarted the MacBook several times, tried signing on with a new ID to make sure that  there is no problem associated with my account. In this mode, Safari still did the same thing. The problem is somewhat irregular, since the first couple of pages will usually open after I close Safari, clear history and delete caches (I always do this and normally browse in the "private browsing" mode). Next step will be to send the Evernote application to the Trash. (notes are saved on the Evernote website and are also on my iPad). I noticed that some Safari users solved this type of problem by upgrading from Lion to Mountain Lion. This would be a last resort, but I wonder if I made some change with my DNS servers it could solve the problem. My IP is Comcast and the DNS servers, they say, are generated automatically.  Also, there is no problem with my wife's MacBook/Safari, so I'm not sure this would actually help. Any suggestions will be considered helpful since I have to solve this quickly due to an upcoming travel schedule.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. For instructions, launch the System Preferences application, select Help from the menu bar, and enter “Set up guest users” (without the quotes) in the search box. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode* and log in to the account with the problem. The instructions provided by Apple are as follows:
Shut down your computer, wait 30 seconds, and then hold down the shift key while pressing the power button.
When you see the gray Apple logo, release the shift key.
If you are prompted to log in, type your password, and then hold down the shift key again as you click Log in.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
*Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.

  • How many of us are having problems with accessing web pages?

For five days I have been having problems accessing web pages, constantly getting the message
Safari can't connect to server etc. etc. It takes me ages just to get to one page without permanently returning to the previous one & trying again. I have tried to use these support pages & find it increasingly difficult to just open a page let alone post anything. If this works I'll be amazed!
I have checked with my ISP - British Telecom. who say there have been a lot of "worms" & 'viruses" across the internet in the last week. Has Safari been contaminated or is it just the www that is the problem? Has anybody at Apple investigated this problem?
I am getting increasingly frustrated by the whole thing as nobody seems to come up with a viable answer. Even if Safari is at fault it would be nice to know where we stand & that somebody is trying to do something about it!

Thanks for that suggestion petitbjs. I think all is OK now. It started without warning, I hadn't changed anything, I just tend to use everything on the computer as it came, I'm a bit chicken to change anything incase I mess it up!!
    Starman et al,
I had to phone BT this evening when I found my internet wireless phone wasn't connecting when I dialled out, it was the same yesterday evening but as I was trying to phone my son in Rio & was expecting him to move house at any time, I thought he might have had the phone disconnected, or it was just something wrong their end as I had the dialling tone OK & assumed the phone was fine. I have been using the landline, both of which go through the Home Hub, all through the last week without any problems.
Eventually the BT man had me unplugging the Hub from the mains whilst holding down the Wireless Association button, after which it was OK, however during all this (apart from when it was unplugged, obviously) I still had uninterrrupted internet service as I had to log into the BT website to check the configuration or something, & the chap seemed to think the phone's hub problem would have had nothing to do with my internet problem over the past few days.
Anyway, things seem to be fine now, I'll just hope it stays that way but at least I can try the unplugging trick if I have similar problems in the future.
Once again, thank you all for your help & suggestions, it is a great comfort to me knowing that I have these boards to call on for assistance on virtually any problem I have with my Mac. Before he moved to Rio I could cry "Help" to my son too, hopefully once they move & get set up with an internet connection next week we will be able to video chat (the whole reason I bought the new Mac!).
    Many thanks to all,
    Carol.

  • Display problems with allowing web pages to use their own fonts, both on and off.

I refer to the "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above" option in the Content > Advanced tab of the Options menu.
When I have this option unchecked, allowing my font choice to override the default non-image generated text for web pages, it seems that many icons and buttons on numerous sites are replaced by some sort of hex code malfunction. They appear as small boxes with four characters inside. I'm sure someone knows the official term for what these are and why they occur.
When I have the option checked, however, any non-image generated text on numerous websites appears as an ugly Stencil font that I simply cannot find the origin of. It should not be and clearly isn't the default font for all of these different sites. By "non-image generated text", I mean any text that is not incorporated into the design of the page.
This issue has persisted through several full re-installs. Any insight into a solution for one or both sides of this problem would be quite appreciated. Thanks for reading.

You would have to remove (uninstall) or reinstall the Georgia font if it is currently corrupted.

  • Safari won't open web page that Firefox will open

    Hello,
I have a specific page on my website that Safari will not display but Firefox will. I have cleared the cache, cookies. Shut down everything, started up...no help.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks in advance
    G5 iMac   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Eve
Web design & programming are done by humans and nothing is perfect. BUT the site compatibility issues may force me, albeit reluctantly, to switch browsers. I hope Apple, will please, please make Safari more compatible. Form is secondary to function.
On the Mac platform, multiple browsers is the way to go if you want to cover all bases. Here's a list of available browsers:
    Firefox 2.0.0.5
    Camino,
    Mozilla,
    Opera,
    Shiira,
    OmniWeb (shareware).
The Internet has evolved into quite a mess when it comes to site coding practices. For example, there are some sites, using antiquated, proprietary Microsoft software (such as ActiveX) that simply will not play on the Mac platform, Further complicating this situation, some site developers have a tendency to create sites coded specifically for Internet Explorer for Windows, and/or use sloppy coding, which invites other problems into the web experience. By contrast, Safari conforms strictly to web standards promulgated by the Web Standards Project, which may trigger rendering problems when it comes to these sites. In this instance, it's helpful to contact the site developer about your awkward browsing experience.
So there's quite a mix-bag on the web. Personally, I prefer using a browser adhering to coding standards designed to promote conformity, security and safe browsing, rather than the alternative of "form over function". For that reason, Safari is definitely my browser of choice.
For video content, such as Yahoo, CNN etc., which does not play as well on Safari (because of how the developers code these sites), I use Firefox. Others here report Camino or Shiira being good alternatives.
On OS X it's quite easy to have multiple apps open at the same time, so going back and forth between browsers is not a problem. Also, you can export your existing Safari bookmarks to another browser, which maintains some degree of uniformity.

  • Safari "hanging" on opening web pages

I recently upgraded to Mountain Lion on my late 2009 iMac.  I have 12 gig of RAM and the machine has an i7 processor.  I am finding that often when I try to open a web page the status bar will show that the page is starting to load and then it just freezes or hangs. If I refresh the page it typically then loads reasonably quickly.
Has anyone else experienced this?  Is there some issue with Safari and are there Any ideas how to fix?
    Thanks.

Non-responsive DNS server or invalid DNS configuration can cause long delay before webpages load

  • Printing problem with my web pages

    Hi all-
I noticed a funny problem with one of my web pages. When I go to print, it only prints one page length of a webpage that should be two pages long (assuming you choose the shrink width to fit one page wide option in your print command).
I post messages with training schedules and people sometimes want to print the page, I'm not looking for pdf or anything, just a simple print the whole web page. When I print, the second half of the webpage comes out blank. I tried saving at a pdf from the print window, and the same thing happens.
The page I'm trying to print out is at:
    http://web.mac.com/gdefrancis/FSNordic/FSTeam_News/Entries/2008/12/22_JNT_Holiday_Training_and_PracticeSchedule.html
Note that is stops printing (or leaves a pdf converted from the webpage blank) after the 12.21 entry.
    any suggestions?
    thanks!

    Hello,
I would like to ask the forum because I have a problem with Dreamweaver 8.
In the past when I work with my PC on Windows XP I didn't have this problem.
Now I have a new PC with Windows 7 Familial Edition Premium.
I can open he most pages I would like, .htm particuliarly but some of them like .html don't opened in Dreamweaver 8
    on PC with Windows 7.
    Example:
    With this page: http://www.pb-veille-consulting.com/veille.html
I can open it with Dreamweaver 8 under Windows XP on my portable PC.
But I can't open it with Dreamweaver 8 under Windows 7 on my fix PC.
    Where is the problem?
You could watch the code of this page and perharps give me answers from my question.
    Thanks a lot.

It could be that Extensions.txt and MMDocumentTypes.xml do not have the full set file extensions.
The first one can be located at ~username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS6/en_us/Configuration and needs to have HTML added to line 1
The second one can be located at ~username/AppData/Roaming/Adobe/Dreamweaver CS6/en_us/Configuration/DocumentTypes and needs to have HTML added to line 3 so that it looks like

  • Safari will not open web pages on my Ipad3

In General Settings, it says there is no Network Available.  How do I fix this?

Thank You Demo for your reply.  To answer your questions:
Yes, my wireless WiFi is on.  It is working because I am using it on my laptop now to reply to you.
I only use my network in my home and it works.
I must have something set wrong on my Ipad3 Settings?
Whenever I try to use Safari, I get the message:  Safari cannot open this web page.
Also, I have disconnected the Router power (thinking the Router was bad), waited a minute, and reconnected the power.  It doesn't fix anything regarding my Ipad3.
Does this help you determine a possible solution?  I hope so!  Thanks anyway for your time and effort, if not!

  • Safari won't open web page on my domain with apple e-mail program open

    Mail Version 3.2
Imac 2.4 ghz 3 gig ram
Mac OS x 10.5.2 up to date
After installing Safari 3.1, I have had an issue that I thought was going to drive me mad. If I have the mail program open, I cannot access any webpage on my domain. Lets say my domain was vvv.com. If I have the mail program open I cannot access www.vvv.com, no any subdomains on there. If I close the mail program and then just refresh the page in the browser, it works just fine. I have searched thru the forums, but cannot identify a solution. If anyone has an idea for me to try, I would appreciate any feedback and helpful hints. Yes, I know that I can just close the email program, but I am in the process of starting up a business website and having to remember to open my email program every so often is something I don't need.
And by the way, the problem also affects firefox also.
    Thanks in advanced..

well...as per your post 192.168.1.3 is the ip add of the macbook .. as you are trying to ping the macbook from a different computer ... it doesn't actually reflect whether the macbook can load webpages or not ...
rather you should try pinging some website add from the macbook to check whether it is able to ping it or not...and as the other 2 computers don't have any problem i don't think it has anything to do with the router settings ..
