  • Arch linux doesn't boot after installing AMD ATI Catalyst

I have a laptop which has a integrated graphic card intel 4th generation (4600) and an AMD ATI R9 m265x (hybrid Intel/AMD graphics card) so I have just installed AMD ATI Catalyst proprietary ones by following
    AMD Catalyst ArchWiki.
I have used "Installing from the unofficial repository" method so in my pacman.conf I have added below entry for [catalyst-stable]:
    [catalyst-stable]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://70.239.162.206/catalyst-mirror/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/catalyst/$arch
Then I have update pacman's database and install below packages:
    catalyst-hook
    catalyst-utils-pxp
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp
(No need to install catalyst-total-pxp as I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp)
After installing it, I have configured the driver, configuring X using below command:
    # aticonfig --initial
In order to use PowerXpress support I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp package plus additional lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp.
To perform a switch into Intel's IGP I have also installed the mesa-libgl  package and Intel's drivers: xf86-video-intel  and intel-dri .
I have enable the automatic update by enabling the catalyst-hook.service with below commands since it automatically rebuilds the fglrx modules while the system shuts down or reboots (so I haven't to do it manually each time kernel is updated using Catalyst-generator):
    # systemctl enable catalyst-hook
    # systemctl start catalyst-hook
And finally I have blacklisted radeon module by creating "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted.conf" file which content is:
    blacklist radeon
and also I have ensured that fglrx line is added in "/etc/modules-load.d/Catalyst.conf" file.
To avoid problems, I have rebuilt the fglrx module by doing (I know it is not necessary as it is done by catalyst-hook):
    catalyst_build_module all
Once I reboot, arch linux does not boot. Last lines printed out are below and then it freezes:
Starting temp files linker to catalyst...
    Starting Catalyst event Daemon...
[ OK ] Started Catalyst event Daemon
Starting Catalyst's fglrx kernel' module builder...
[ OK ] Started temp files linker for catalyst.
[ OK ] Started Catalyst's fglrx kernel' modue builder.
[ OK ] Started gnome Display manager.
[ OK ] Started Network manager.
    [ OK ] Reached target Multi-User system.
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
[ OK ] Reached target Network.
I have tried to put nomodeset as a kernel parameter but it does not work. Also, after reading ArchWiki, I have noticed that it is recommended to don't do this as I am using catalyst-utils-pxp because intel driver needs it so I have removed nomodeset parameter from kernel but It continues not working.
    Any ideas?
    Package versions:
    Kernel version 3.17.6-1-ARCH
    catalyst-hook 14.12-1
    catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.99.916-3

FInally I managed to boot arch linux.
    I had to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16.2.901-1 to 1.15.2-1.
It seems there is a problem with Catalyst 14.12-1 and xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1.
Also I had to replace desktop manager from gdm to lightdm as gdm raises segmentation faults using xorg-server versions 1.16.2.901-1 and 1.15.2-1.
Finally I had to add an entry in pacman.conf:
    [xorg115]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg115/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/xorg115/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/xorg115/$arch
    Then performs following actions:
    1)  # pacman -Syuu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils-pxp
    2) Uninstall all the packages xf86* such as xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev,  xf86-input-synaptics, etc.
    3) Install the packages uninstalled in step 2 and install them again using xorg115 repo, for example, # pacman -S xorg115/xf86-video-intel xorg115/xf86-input-evdev xorg115/xf86-input-synaptics
I have put a comment here.

  • ATI Catalyst Install Manager and catalyst Control Center Help

I just run the Windows 7 Upgrade
advisor report and it said that I should uninstall the ATI Catalyst Install Manager and Catalyst Control Center then reinstall after upgrade..
Could someone direct me where I might t find these programs for Windows 7

You must not do this. Just continue upgrade installation.
On my Satellite I got the same message but I have simply continued with upgrade.
At the end everything went fine.

  • ATI Catalyst 9.2 and "Incompatible display adapter has been disabled."

    Hi,
I have this issue... on 3 GPUs. Only one is working.  2 x 3870x2 in crossfire / Vista x64 SP1
I tried everything possible : uninstall all ATI software before, clean registry, delete files, temporary files, many uninstall and reboots, trying different settings in BIOS . Same issue.
This time I choose to install 9.2 drivers only (without Control Center), but the result is the same.
The problem appears since v8.11, but I was able to install at the end by cleaning / reinstalling many times.
v8.12, v9.1, v9.2 are impossible to install correctly on my system. I'm very disapointed.
I've been waiting about 6 month for 8.10 to have stable drivers...
Maybe installing ATI drivers should be proposed to Olympic Games category...
I asked to ATI if they have a tool to clean all previous drivers, and they suggested this link :
    https://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=1447
    Look at the utility cat-uninstaller.exe date : 10/08/2003 !!!
It's possible that the problem comes from old drivers, but I refuse to format / reinstall the system each time ATI release a new driver. I did that for 8.12 and I had the same issue.
For users who have this problem : OPEN A TICKET TO ATI CUSTOMER CARE !!!
    http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=31625
That's the olny way to solve this issue.
    My system below :
    AMD Phenom 9950 BE / Sunbeam Core-Contact Freezer / ASUS M3A32-MVP DELUXE-WIFI-AP (AMD 790FX/SB600 - BIOS v1406) / OCZ Reaper HPC Edition 8Go ( 4*2Go ) PC8500 1066MHz Cas 5-5-5-18 / Quad CrossfireX : dual MSI R3870X2-T2D1G-OC - ATI Catalyst 8.11 / RAID0 : 2x Samsung - Spinpoint F1 - 320 Go 7200 rpm SATA II 16 Mo cache / PSU : Thermaltake - TOUGHPOWER 1200W / VISTA x64 SP1

I did tests on my second system :
    System 2 :
    AMD Athlon X2 6400+ / ASUS M3A79-T Deluxe (AMD 790FX/SB750) / 8GB DDR2 800MHz Corsair Doninator / RAID0 2x Samsung 200 Go SATA II
    CrossfireX : 2x MSI RX3870-T2D512E-OC (v120 + v803) / ATI Catalyst 9.1 / Cooler Master Real Power M620 (620W/efficiency >80%) / VISTA x64 SP1
    On this system :
Catalyst 9.1 working and Crysis Warhead too
Catalyst 9.2 installation is OK, but :
        - Crysis Warhead hang at 85% when a level is loaded
        - Crysis v1.2.1 load correctly, but hang after 1 minute
        - I noticed that when I lanch CPU-Z 0.3.2 I have on "Bus Interface"
            -card 1 : PCI-E x16 2.0@ x16 2.0
            -card 2 : PCI-E x16 2.0@ x16          (in catalyst 8.10, both are @2.0)
    Uninstall 9.2 and visual c++ x64, reboot, install 9.1 => 2 x GPU disabled error 43 !!!
Going back to 8.10 : it's the last working stable revision from MSI.
For users who use MSI Live update, and drivers from MSI : what are the last ATI Catalyst revision drivers furbished by MSI ?
I would like to have feedback (vista x64, crossfirex).
    Thanks

  • Ati catalyst 4.4 and up won't install

I can't install any Ati catalyst driver versions above 4.4, I have a Gecube Radeon 9800XTreme and a Gecube 9200Se and drivers up to and including catalyst 4.3 install fine with either card but any version above gives message "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." Same goes for any of the modded drivers in those versions. All works fine in my other Asus Amd based computer. Any one else had these issues and maybe a solution.

If you are trying to install Control Panel you need to have Microsoft .net framework installed first.

  • [SOLVED] AMD/ATI Drivers crashing on startx

I ordered parts to build a new HTPC that just arrived today. I built it and got arch up and running without much trouble but I hit a snag when I started trying to get X up and running (isn't this always when things seems to go wrong? lol) The board has an AMD E350 with Radeon HD 6310 graphics and from things I've read around the web, I'm going to need proprietary drivers to get good smooth HD playback. I followed instructions on the ATI Catalyst page of the Arch Wiki and added
    [catalyst]
    Server = http://catalyst.apocalypsus.net/repo/catalyst/$arch
to my /etc/pacman.conf file then installed all the drivers through pacman. Now when I run startx i get

I actually hadn't done either. I just did both and rebooted and xbmc opened no problem! thanks. I didn't know I needed to manually add flgrx to the rc.conf file.
Also what exactly does adding "nomodset" to grub do?

    Hey,
I have exactly the same problem (Radeon 9700 Mobility here). My native resolution is 1400x1050 and it used to work just fine but the newest driver maxes out at 1280x1024 (as reported by xrandr).
    Shame ATI can't write drivers.

  • Issue with AMD/ATI 11-3 driver and Photoshop on Windows.

The latest AMD/ATI drivers for Radeon HD cards (4xxx, 5xxx, and 6xxx series), 11-3, breaks Normal and Advanced OpenGL modes in Photoshop on Windows.
Note that this does not occur with 11-1 or 11-2 drivers on the same system. We recommend you stick with 11-1 or 11-2 until this problem is addressed.
We're working with AMD on the issue and there should be a driver update very soon.

  • [SOLVED]"fontconfig conflicts with fontconfig-ubuntu" and other issues

Almost every program I have has stopped working. If I run a program from a terminal (one of the virtual terminals, gnome-terminal wont work either), they either complain about not being able to find libpng or libjpeg. I read the news posting about these and some forum posts, but none of them mentioned people having problems. What I understood from reading is that I just need to update my system.
This is where the problem lies. I cannot run "pacman -Syu" as usual. When I do, I get the following error:
fontconfig conflicts with fontconfig-ubuntu. Remove fontconfig-ubuntu?
If I answer yes, I get:
error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: kdelibs: requires phonon
    :: cairo-ubuntu: requires fontconfig-ubuntu>=2.6.0
    :: libxft-ubuntu: requires fontconfig-ubuntu
If I answer no, I get:
    error: unresolvable package conflicts detected
error: failed to prepare transaction (conflicting dependencies)
    :: fontconfig: conflicts with fontconfig-ubuntu
Either way, nothing is upgraded. How can I resolve this, as well as the libpng/libjpeg issue? I cleaned my cache and tried re-installing them, but it didn't help.

Alright I installed fontconfig-ubuntu from the AUR and that resolved my initial conflict. It started complaining about gtk-qt-engine and kdelibs and they weren't depended on by anything so I just removed them (I assume I can re-install them later) and now my system upgrade is underway. Hopefully things will be fixed when it finishes.
Does anyone know what caused this and whether I can avoid similar issues in the future?
It happens because you are using a modified version of fontconfig (the ubuntu one). When a new version of fontconfig reaches [extra], pacman tries to update fontconfig (because fontconfig-ubuntu provides fontconfig, and fontconfig from [extra] is newer than the version you have installed) and finds that it conflicts with fontconfig-ubuntu.
The way to go is the one that you have followed: when there is an update in fontconfig, update your fontconfig-ubuntu package to the latest in AUR (hopefully the same version as the new one in [extra], else you'll have to wait or modify the PKGBUILD) and then update the rest of the system.

    solved!
since the cursor used through the proprietary catalyst driver have issues, use instead the SW cursor,
    Section "Device"
    Option "SWCursor" "true"
    EndSection

  • [SOLVED] AMD Catalyst + Xinerama + Compiz

    Compiz + xf86-video-ati = works
Compiz + AMD Catalyst = works
AMD Catalyst + Xinerama = works
    all three, no so good.
I believe the issue is related to this:
    $ compiz-check
    Gathering information about your system...
    Distribution: Arch Linux
    Desktop environment: Xfce
Graphics chip: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Barts PRO [Radeon HD 6800 Series]
    Driver in use: fglrx
    Rendering method: None
Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system... [SKIP]
    Checking for hardware/setup problems... [SKIP]
At least one check had to be skipped:
Error: No rendering method in use (AIGLX, Xgl or Nvidia)
Any idea how I set a rendering method? I did some research with not much luck.
    All the other tests pass:
    $ fglrxinfo
    display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 6800 Series
OpenGL version string: 4.2.11903 Compatibility Profile Context
    02:48:57 Mon Oct 22 crrobi01 ~/Desktop
    $ lsmod | grep fglrx
    fglrx 4606694 143
    amd_iommu_v2 7367 1 fglrx
    button 4662 1 fglrx
    02:49:11 Mon Oct 22 crrobi01 ~/Desktop
    $ glxinfo | grep direct
    direct rendering: Yes
    GL_AMD_multi_draw_indirect, GL_AMD_name_gen_delete,
    GL_ARB_draw_indirect, GL_ARB_draw_instanced,
    GL_EXT_copy_buffer, GL_EXT_copy_texture, GL_EXT_direct_state_access,
I've already enabled indirect rendering and generated a xorg.conf via
    aticonfig --initial=dual-head --screen-layout=left
Of course after creating the xconf I had to use CCC to switch to xinerama. Is xinerama the only way for me to have a single desktop which spans both my monitors (while using the propriety ATI drivers of course)?
After creating xorg.conf I edited it to include
    "Section "Extensions"
    Option "Composite" "Enable"
    EndSection
    and
    Section "ServerLayout"
    Option "AIGLX" "True"
    EndSection
    and I restarted X.
    Solved:
    gksu amdcccle
    - Disable Xinerama
    - Display Manager > Multi-Display > select "Multi-display desktop with display(s) 2"
    - Reboot

From AMD ATI Control Center I have set GPU to intel in order to save battery life and after restarting arch linux, now the error messages below have disappeared.
Only remaining the warning messages but if they are not harmful, then no problem
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: i965
libGL error: No matching fbConfigs or visuals found
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast

  • [Solved] Artifacts with ATI Radeon HD 6670 and open source driver

    Hey folks,
I use the xf86-video-ati driver and have a lot of artifacts on my screen.
Here my Xorg and dmesg log:
    Dmesg: http://pastebin.com/AF8AmJfP
    Xorg: http://pastebin.com/8rnQS0sa
    My kernel version: 3.8.8-2-ARCH
    My /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf:
    Section "Device"
        Identifier "Radeon"
        Driver "radeon"
        Option "EXAPixmaps" "off"
        Option "AccelDFS" "off"
    EndSection
I tried to use the linux-lts kernel and the mesa-git repository but nothing happend...
KMS is enabled, if I disable it Xorg only works with vesa but very slow and with a bad resolution.
All other framebuffers devices are disabled.
I hope someone can help me...

    Yes I have...no changes...
I could use the ati catalyst driver to solve this problem but I hate this slow driver.
    EDIT:
I also have artifacts on my virtual console...

  • [SOLVED][ati catalyst]amdcccle won't start anymore

    Hey all,
I spent all the day working on my MSI GX60 equiped with
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ lspci | grep VGA
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Richland [Radeon HD 8650G]
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Neptune [Radeon HD 8970M] (rev ff)
Everything was running fine until today.
To show something to my son, I tried to run a VirtualBox machine but it couldn't because :
'Your machine tries to run 3D acceleration but 3D is not defined on your host' or something like that.
So I tried to run 'sudo amdcccle' or 'kdesu amdcccle', no way, it doesn't start.
I don't have any error displaying in my cli.
I just can kill it after a few minutes.
I've read somewhere on an ubuntu forum that it was necessary to install qt, so I did but it changed nothing.
I really need my virtual machines, that's windows 7 and XP clients, if I deactivate 3D acceleration in configuration, I guess windows won't like it...
    Help !

I followed wiki for uninstall catalyst, reboot, then clean install of catalyst, reboot, it's the same.
But I've found a way to make it work : disable lxdm and reboot.
Then I remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb at each boot, before running startx. Then I'm able to open amdcccle, check configuration, fglrxinfo gives :
    [jledun@io0 ~]$ fglrxinfo
    display: :0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: AMD Radeon HD 8650G
OpenGL version string: 4.3.12614 Compatibility Profile Context 13.25.18
If I reboot again, the problem appears again, then I kill X, remove /etc/ati/amdpcsdb again and it works.
I'm going to see if the problem is the same with razor-qt.

  • My trial of AMD Catalyst 12.3 and 12.2 pre-certified driver on Macbook Pro 2011 early

I would like to share my experience on installing AMD catalyst 12.3 and 12.2 pre-certified driver on macbook pro 2011 early. Before installing the drivers, I first used catalyst install manager to remove the previously installed driver and then driver sweeper to clean the residuals. After the cleaning process, the macbook pro simply backed to VGA display.
Unfortunately, the setup programs of these two drivers showed different behaviors. The 12.2 pre-certified setup program could detect the 6750M chip and install AMD display driver. You can tell the behavior by watching the messages shown during the installation process. Nevertheless, AMD seemed change the behavior the setup program. The program did not install the display driver & CCC but still continued to install HDMI/DP driver and other stuffs.
In short, if somebody wants to install 12.3, he definitely needs some extra tricks to do so.

Boot into Safe Mode for a while to see if the panics cease. Meanwhile you need to upgrade Parallels to the current version, 7.x. If you are using the USB to Ethernet adaptor then unplug it along with any other peripherals. Uninstall LittleSnitch, Ambrosia extension, and VaraAudio extension (or uninstall the software that installed them using their uninstallers.)
