[solved] cannot update because of full /var partition

hello,
i have problems updating my packages, because my /var partition is full.
Total Download Size: 253.57 MiB
Total Installed Size: 1009.80 MiB
Net Upgrade Size: -1949.50 MiB
:: Proceed with installation? [Y/n] y
error: Partition /var too full: 70069 blocks needed, 52290 blocks free
error: failed to commit transaction (not enough free disk space)
Errors occurred, no packages were upgraded.
to solve this i tried to delete some *.tar.xz files in /var/cache/pacman/pkg, thinking they wouldnt be needed anymore as they are installed already. i could update then, but after a reboot, i had to fix it with
pacman-db-upgrade
. should i try to resize my partitions, or is there any easy solution?
thanks lizzy

What the heck were you doing in that pacman transation?  1 GB was added, and nearly 2 GB removed?
I can't help but suspect that was part of it.  But in either case, you should check what is filling up /var/ as the package cache should not be a major issue.  Are logs filling up?  In other words, are you ignoring your computer screaming at you about some other problem?

It means that nano was used on a third-party software or synced from different computer to sync music. Does that nano show in iTunes? If yes, then restore completely. If not, then you may need to head to Apple Store and see what they can do.

  • HT4484 My email was phished, so I deleted it and changed it completely.  Now all the apps that I downloaded with the old email cannot update because I cannot log into that email.  Mountain Lion is compatible with the new updated iPhoto.  what can I do?

My email address was phished and I had to delete it completely.  That was the one I used to download all my original apps on my computer.  I have since changed to a new address, but since my apps were under the old one, I cannot update them without logging into the old address.  It no longer exists....so how do I fix this?
Some of the apps I don't really care about updating but, I did download the new Mountain Lion and it wants to update my iphots and I can't do it.
Any help will be appreciated!  Thanks!

    Hi joaroa,
When you say you deleted your email and changed it completely, those are actually two different things, and it sounds like you are talking about your Apple ID, not just your email, (because you speak of making purchases with it).
If you changed your Apple ID (preferred, How to change the name you use for your Apple ID), then you would not have another Apple ID and all of your purchases would still be with your only Apple ID, it would just be renamed to your new email address.
If you instead created a new Apple ID (with a different email address) then of course you have two different Apple IDs and the old one still exists and is probably active. Just because you may not use an email address anymore, that doesn't mean an Apple ID of the same name is inactive, Apple IDs aren't deleted.  If you start purchasing Apps with your new Apple ID, it can really cause confusion because, as you see, you need to be logged into the Apple ID that purchased an App to update it. It would be best to stick with one Apple ID for purchases, probably the one you have spent the most money with.  Remember, unless it's an @mac or @me Apple ID you can rename them rather than creating yet another Apple ID.  Since Apple IDs can't be merged or deleted, creating more can be a messy.
If you don't remember what the password is for a particular Apple ID, you can visit iforgot.apple.com where you can reset it, the AppleConnect password.  If the Apple ID is no longer a valid email address, you can use the security question method to reset the password instead.
Unless you have made a lot of purchases with your new Apple ID, I'd recommend moving back into your old one, especially if that has the most or the most expensive apps with it.  If your new Apple ID is the "name/email" you want to use, you could rename the new one to a secondary email, then rename your old Apple ID to your preferred name/email.  Basically, rename the new one to something else which frees up that name (email) to rename your old Apple ID.  Thus your old Apple ID has the new name.  See My Apple ID.  The "Manage your account" link is where you can rename the ID itself.
Sorry about getting long winded here, but it's important to keep as few Apple IDs as possible, at least when it comes to purchases.  If an Apple ID is undesired, rename it rather than creating a new one. It will be much simpler in the long run.
Let us know how it goes.

  • IPod cannot update because "firmware file" cannot be found

We have a video iPod with color--30 GB. When I connect to iTunes to update my iPod, it says a newer version of iPod software is available. • Mail cannot update because home directory is full

I have read the the solutions to this problem and have tried them all. I have thrown away the preference file, I have re-installed mail w/Pacifist software, I have copied envelope index to desktop. These have all failed, I still get the same message when I try to open Mail. I have also deleted emails from home/library files. When I "command I" my hard drive it tells me I've got 75.11 GB available.
One strange factor, before this started... I had my laptop closed, when I opened it, my screen was real dark and I had to force quit by holding the power button down. Could this be related?
Can anyone help me w/this?! I am, of course, desperate to get to my email!!

    From Mail Help:
"My mailbox is over its quota
If you receive a message from your email provider that your mailbox has grown too large, check your available space and try deleting some messages to make room for new messages. It is common for email accounts to limit how much email can be stored on the server.
The Account Info window, which you open from the Action pop-up menu located below your list of mailboxes, helps you manage your email when you've exceeded your account's storage limits.
Choose Get Info from the Action pop-up menu.
Choose the account you want to manage from the Account pop-up menu.
Click either Quota Limits (for a .Mac or IMAP account) or "Messages on Server" (for
    a POP account).
    View messages.
For a POP account, select which messages you want to view using the Show Messages pop-up menu. Then click the Size header to view messages in order of size. You can free up space on the server more quickly by deleting the largest messages first.
For .Mac or IMAP accounts, click the Size header to find the largest mail folders on your server. Select a mailbox, then click Show Messages. Click Size in the viewer window, then select messages and press the Delete key to remove the messages.
Most mail providers also let you manage your email accounts from a web browser. To manage your .Mac account, go to webmail.mac.com, sign in, and choose Show All Folders from the Go To pop-up menu. The Email Storage meter shows your total space allotted, and how much you have used.
Try these strategies to free space in your email account:
Delete large messages or messages with attachments (first save any attachments you want to keep). To see if messages have attachments, choose View > Columns > Attachments. To see the size of each message, choose View > Columns > Size. To quickly identify large messages to delete, click the Size column heading to sort the messages by size.
For .Mac or IMAP accounts, make sure your Trash mailbox is empty. Messages you've recently deleted are in the Trash mailbox, but haven't yet been removed from the mail server. Choose Mailbox > Erase Deleted Messages to remove the messages.
For .Mac or IMAP accounts, move some of your messages from the server to mailboxes on your computer. Choose Mailbox > New Mailbox, then choose On My Mac from the Location pop-up menu in the dialog that appears. Name the mailbox. Next, click your Inbox, select the messages you want to put in the new mailbox, and drag them to the new mailbox you created. The messages are copied from the mail server to your hard disk and then deleted from the server.
Once you have downloaded attachments from email messages in your .Mac or IMAP accounts, you have a copy of the attachments on your computer. To make more space available on the server, you can remove the attachments from the server. Select a message with attachments you want to remove and choose Message > Remove Attachments.
For POP accounts, change how long messages are kept on the server after you retrieve them. Choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts. Select the account, then click the Advanced pane and choose a time interval for removing messages from the server.
For .Mac or IMAP accounts, messages in the Drafts, Trash, Sent, and Junk mailboxes are stored on the server by default. To free server space, delete the messages or move them to mailboxes on your computer. You can also change the preference for these mailboxes so that future messages are not stored on the server; note that any messages in the mailboxes at the time you change the preference will remain on the server until you delete them or move them to your computer. To change the preference, choose Mail > Preferences and click Accounts. Select a .Mac or IMAP account, click Mailbox Behaviors, and change the option for storing messages on the server. To learn if a mailbox is stored on the server or your computer, place your pointer over the mailbox.
Delete messages from your Sent mailbox if you store sent mail on the server.
Use iChat or iDisk, not email, to transfer large files. For information on sending files in a chat, open iChat and choose Help > iChat Help.

    1) Did you read the front page news about the Java update(s).
    2) Did you install Java from an Arch Repo or install it "manually" by downloading it from Oracle, etc.?
    3) What package owns those files? (pacman -Qo /usr/bin/java, for example)

  • Cannot update because firefox never gets beyond the "Downloading Firefox" box, the one with "Hide" button in the lower left corner.

the "Software Update" box shows "Downloading Firefox" the blue strip runs across the box in the area that is immediately above, "Connecting to the update server..." I have let it run for over an hour a couple of times - it never gets beyond this step.

If you have problems with updating then best is to download the full version and uninstall the currently installed version.
Download a fresh Firefox copy and save the file to the desktop.
    * Firefox 4.0.x: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all.html
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Do not remove personal data if you uninstall the current version.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
Your bookmarks and other profile data are stored elsewhere in the [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] and won't be affected by a reinstall, but make sure that you do not select to remove personal data if you uninstall Firefox.

  • I-pod cannot update because all the playlists selected for no longer exsist

What does this mean?? I have tons of songs on my itunes, but now I have 0 on my ipod and can't figure out how to transfer them. THis is a new problem, they used to transfer just fine...HELP

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make it a smart playlist that picks the songs for you or just a normal one and drag whatever content you want to have into the playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano. Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:

    Syncing Music to iPod
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the smart playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection. When you want to change the normal playlist just delete out what you don't want and drag in a new selection.

  • Firefox says it has an update but when I select update it says it cannot update because Firefox is open. It is not open anywhere else.

Those are pretty much the details. I have completely shut down and restarted. I have done a restore (which seemed to work for a while but then it went right back to doing what it had been doing).

Can you give the exact wording of the message that is telling you your laptop needs an update?
