[SOLVED] Chromium exiting on opening

Hello, guys!
I'm using Arch on a 32-bit install and using chromium 37.0.2062.120-2, but since I've updated to that version I'm getting the following error on opening:
$ chromium
[1007/234520:FATAL:content_main_runner.cc(715)] Check failed: base::i18n::InitializeICU().
Aborted (core dumped)
I saw that there are similar errors happening on Chromium OS
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1427078
Did anyone had that problem with Chromium recently? Any tips on how to proceed?
Best,

Hi,
After the update the problem stopped happening. Seems chromium updated to the same version as Google Chrome.
Thanks for the help!

  • [Solved] Chromium Won't Open Due to Missing Fonts

    After 8+ hours of installing and configuring Arch I am finally ready to start adding programs. I installed Chromium with Pacman but Chromium doesn't open and I get this error when I try and run it from the terminal:
    [*****@Arch-Desktop ~]$ chromium

    I tried searching for the Helvetica font using "pacman -Ss helvetica" but it didn't find anything.
    How do I install the fonts need by Chromium?
    Thanks
    Edited: Chromium just started working for some reason even though I didn't do anything to fix it.

    @scrottro - Chromium just needs fonts; it doesn't have to specifically be ttf-ms-fonts. Secondly ttf-ms-fonts is an AUR package and will stay like that so it cannot be a dependency. Anyways there was already a bug about it:

  • [SOLVED] chromium unresponsive when opening preferences

    When opening preferences in chromium, a new tab appears but it is not populated and the tab becomes unresponsive. Obviously, this is a deal-breaker and I need some help in fixing it.
    I observed that after opening preferences, a new ktradertest process (I use KDE) is eating 100% cpu. ktradertest is spawned by xdg-settings, which is spawned by the original chromium process, trying to determine if it is the default browser. So the root problem is that ktradertest never returns. This is reproducible by running "ktradertest text/html Application" in a terminal.
    A new user account did not exhibit the same behavior. Running ktradertest through either strace or gdb also failed to reproduce the problem. Attaching to the hung process yields the following stack trace:
    #0 0x00007f4a429b81c5 in ?? () from /usr/lib/libGL.so.1

    So it seems that some configuration file is causing the problem, but I've tested every one I can think of without success.

    It seems that ktradertest is part of kdelibs3 and is not included in recent releases of KDE4, which explains why I couldn't find any information about it. There was only one old application using kdelibs3, so I got rid of all KDE3 stuff and the problem is solved. Since ktradertest is not intended to be run in a modern KDE4 environment, it's understandable that it's unstable and failing in this weird way.
    However, it seems that xdg-settings should not be using it. xdg-settings also calls xdg-mime, which does perform a version check and uses ktraderclient in the case of KDE4. It seems that xdg-settings should also perform that check and not use ktradertest, which probably just returns a "command not found" on most desktops.

  • [SOLVED] Chromium zooming issue

    I've been experiencing a very annoying "feature" of chromium lately - unintentional zooming of web pages.
    How to reproduce:
    Scroll (with mouse etc) a web page in chromium
    Stop scrolling
    Open a new tab
    Probably this all boils down to the introduction of <ctrl>+<scroll> zooming in chromium, as I experience similar behavior in firefox. However, I don't think zooming should occur because when I press ctrl to open a new tab, I have let go of the scrolling. Is there a workaround for this issue (including how to completely disable zooming in chromium)?

  • [SOLVED] Chromium not calling xdg-open

    Hi,
    I have been trying to get Chromium to call external applications based on their name and/or mime type. My desktop is XFCE.
    I have read about setting up the xdg-utils, and believe I have it configured. The following command line when run from bash opens up acroread and displays the PDF:
    xdg-open http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-intro.pdf
    My ~/.local/share/applications/defaults.list file is:
    application/pdf=acroread.desktop;
    But when I click on the link in chromium I get the "Save File" dialog.
    As a test, I edited the /usr/bin/xdg-open shell script, and made it write to a file in /tmp when ever it is called. (The second line where I send the date to the /tmp/xdg-open.log file.)
    #!/bin/sh
    /usr/bin/date >> /tmp/xdg-open.log
    # xdg-open
    # Utility script to open a URL in the registered default application.
    # Refer to the usage() function below for usage.
    # Copyright 2009-2010, Fathi Boudra <[email protected]>
    When I try and download a PDF in chromium, it never adds to the /tmp/xdm-open.log file. (But does if I call it from the command line as I did above.)
    So to me, it looks like chromium isn't even calling the xdg-open script.
    Any one have any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.

  • [SOLVED] Chromium opens PDFs in some crappy version of evince

    Maybe a link to something useful?
    I'm sorry to repost, but I'm not the type not to search for a solution before posting.  I'll admit that I'm not the best googler (my wife, who has trouble copying and pasting files is much better than I am).  But I did a search in arch forums for "Evince" as suggested, and out of the 23 pages of results I couldn't find a single thread title containing the words "Chromium" and "Evince".
    Google gives me nothing but people wondering how to get chromium to open with evince (e.g. http://askubuntu.com/questions/163176/h … ing-evince, but this doesn't work for me).
    I now realize that Chromium is opening pdfs in evince-previewe rather than evince.  Can't find anything useful in .confic/chromium.

    Yeah I tried just about all of them and none of them had the features I was used to in evince. I found qpdfview by reading a post on these forums too. I really can't give it enough praise.
    @WonderWoofy
    I liked zathura because it was also very fast but it didn't have the side bars and remember what page I was on etc..etc.. All the bells and whistles that spoiled me with evince. It may have it and I just couldn't find it. Also, it seemed very keyboard friendly vs mouse friendly and when it comes to reading pdf files I am more of a mouse person still (I think the vim user comment is very relevant in this comparison).

  • [half-solved] Firefox won't open GtkFileChooserDialog

    Hey,
    i have a rather strange problem: In Firefox i can't open the "Save File" dialogue. Whether it's in Preferences -> General -> Browse (to change the Download directory) or just rightclicking any link and trying to save it - no dice. The download folder is set to Desktop (can't change it) and even though that directory exists and when set to save files automatically, Firefox will not save/download files.
    Effectively, i can't download.
    GtkFileChooserDialog shows up fine in any other application, including Chromium.
    I can't tell you much about how this happened. I set up the system about a week ago and i have an almost 1:1 identical installation on my laptop where i don't have this issue:
    Identical .mozilla folder, theme and gtk configuration, mime configuration, file browser, almost all the same packages, really.
    The only differences might be some files in $HOME (though not .mozilla), i've had that partition for years. Though, again, most important config files are shared between the laptop and the PC and i have already deleted the .cache and any firefox related files as well as started firefox in safe-mode. FFS. The PC also uses ATI Catalyst drivers but i doubt that's related.
    WM is Awesome 3.4.
    Any idea what's going on?
    Cheers
    P.S.:
    I've found out that setting "browser.folder.downloadList" (in about:config) to 2 (integer) fixes this problem. But it's very shaky, when i try to change the directory in the Preferences it will revert back to "browser.folder.downloadList 0" and the problem reoccurs. So, i won't mark this solved just yet but this a workaround for now. Still don't know why or what exactly is happening.
    Last edited by demian (2013-11-30 11:32:35)

    Try using Mozilla's Firefox build and see if it still happens.
    Also try switching to the open-source ATI drivers instead of Catalyst. Despite your doubt it *may* be the issue.

    Hello
    Today (as always) i turned my PC on and i had a problem... well, several of them. In this one, i want to ask how to solve this:

    The Segmentation fault occurs when i hit F12 (the default key to use Guake)
    I have had a problem too with Chromium, it appears to say the same Segmentation fault when i type in the address bar (see https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1096044 for more info).
    Thanks for your help.

  • [SOLVED] Chromium + pepper = Video @ double speed

    I am using the latest stable chromium, with the pepper-stable package from the AUR recommended in the Chromium wiki.
    I moved to Chromium as Flash is no longer being developed for Firefox....And Firefox 26 crashes a lot, and randomly, including with all plugins removed. So It's a problem right now.
    As the subject mentions....I am getting weird video issues. Usually, the video plays back at double speed, with the associated spastic audio output. Here is an example: Ref: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=smCQ2g9L7PU.
    This used to play fine in Firefox with the old flashplugin.
    In my porting process, here is what I did:
    With no browser open:
    a)     "sudo pacman -Rs flashplugin"
             a1)    Verified that flash was no longer operating in Firefox.
    b)    "sudo pacman -S chromium"
    c)    "yaourt -S chromium-pepper-flash-stable"
    d)   In chromium: "chrome://plugins" to verify that flash wasn't showing up.
    Arch x86_64 (current), NVidia GTX-660, using the nvidia drivers from Arch...extra. (rev 331.20) vdpau is installed in both the 64 and lib32 variants.
    I have tried disabling hardware acceleration in the pepper-flash plugin, restarted the browser and retried. I have tried enabling hardware acceleration, restarted the browser and retried.
    Playback seems unaffected in either scenario, and remains unusable.
    Gnash has never performed properly for me in any scenario where I've tried it. So Gnash is not an option. Gnash has a long way to go until it is ready to be a good drop-in replacement for an official "flash plugin".
    So for now, I have to use the smtube for smplayer to view YouTube/major news site videos properly.
    I am requesting, please, some assistance in fixing my video playback issue in Chromium.
    Sincerely and respectfully,
    Dave
    PS: I'm curious, why does the firefox community appear to be sitting on their hands when Adobe has made it clear for a long time that Adobe Flash for linux is being abandoned as of 01-JAN-2014? I would have expected some really heavy programming resources to be assigned to gnash to make it better, or write some sort of wrapper for the chromium pepper plugin....for official Adobe support.
    Is there another reliable flash playback mechanism that I am missing all together?

    I thought that it might be related to:

    however when I followed wiki and created:
    $cat /etc/systemd/system/[email protected]/environment.conf
    [Service]
    Environment=DISPLAY=:0
    Environment=XDG_RUNTIME_DIR=/run/user/%I
    Environment=SHELL=%s
    then /bin/false error went away. I still have some problems with systemd managing my user session but unrelated to the above. Marking as solved.

    Hi,
    I had to do a full system upgrade today and when I came to the point where I wanted to install my favourite browser, yaourt failed.
    I typed:
    $yaourt -S chromium-browser-bin
    A list of the usual stuff pops up, eg. the comments and what not.. Then I get the typical warning about whether or not I would like to modify the pkgbuild which, of course, I would select yes (problem still happens if I hit no).. Immediately after that, I'm back with
    chromium-browser-bin LATEST-12 : The open-source project behind Google Chrome
    ( Unsupported package: Potentally dangerous ! )
    ==> Edit the PKGBUILD (highly recommended for security reasons) ? [Y/n]("A" to abort)
    ==> ----------------------------------------------
    ==>n
    [molecular-bio@archbox ~]$
    Does this potentially mean that this package is deleted?
    yaourt works for other packages, so I'm not sure here... I really, really liked the chromium-browser-bin package.
    Thank you

    The problem is with yaourt's parser.  Using a different AUR helper, this problem disappears.
    However, I can understand the attraction of using Yaourt.  You can make chromium-browser-bin and chromium-codecs-ffmpeg-nonfree-bin work with yaourt by editing the PKGBUILDs.  Where it says:
    case "$CARCH" in
    i686|i[3-5]86) _bldarch='chromium-rel-linux';;
    x86_64|amd64) _bldarch='chromium-rel-linux-64';;
    # The following should not happen; provided you're using 'makepkg' ;)
    *) error "Unknown or invalid CARCH=$CARCH"; exit 1
    esac
    Replace that with the one for the version that you have:
    64-bit Arch
    _bldarch=chromium-rel-linux-64
    32-bit Arch
    _bldarch=chromium-rel-linux
    (Edit: stupidly had the two swapped)

  • [Solved] Chromium launching two windows

    I'm running a bare bones xorg setup with no window manager.  Instead in /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc I have the line:
    exec chromium
    When I close chromium X11 then exits.  I have it set up this way because the only X11 app I use is chromium.
    The problem is when I start up chromium I get whatever windows were open before, plus an extra one.  Even if I exited chromium by closing all the previous tabs I get two windows, each with the startup tab.  This is getting annoying.
    Any idea on how to fix it?  I already tried all three "On startup" options, and changing the line in xinitrc to exec chromium --auto-launch-at-startup but neither has fixed the problem.
    Edit: Nevermind, I ended up calling chromium from two different places.  Sorry to take you time.
