Make sure dbus is started before you start wicd or nm-applet.
I start hal (which requires dbus) before I start wicd, never had any problems.

  • [Solved] nm-applet not appearing in gnome panel

    Hi all.
I recently replaced my wired network card with a wireless one.
I then followed the instructions at the following pages to get the correct software installed:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wi … orkManager
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/NetworkManager
My only problem now is that nm-applet does not appear in the gnome panel.
Both nm-applet and networkmanager are running though, but the network is not up.
If I then kill nm-applet and run it from the command line, it the creates the icon in gnome-panel and automatically connects to my wireless network.
I've looked through all the related posts but I can't find anything that helps.
I've tried to make my DAEMONS section of rc.conf as simple as possible:
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng netfs crond dbus networkmanager alsa)
    but that didn't help either.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me?
As a side note I have a another machine with exactly the same wireless card with a fresh install and it works perfectly with regards to nm-applet.
Perhaps it's a config setting that is causing the problem?

  • Applet cause to browser crash with hs_err_pid log file on desktop

    Hi there,
We have a web based application which is initiating an other applet application inside, and communicating with the applet over live-connect javascript calls.
Sometimes when initating the applet, it causes to crash of the browser and leaves a file on the desktop named like hs_err_pid.log.
If it occurs once a time for a user , it will allways happen until logoff and login back to windows.
We think that, it may be about some registry settings for the Java plug-in, because re-login may solve the problem.
And we seen that it mostly happens when another Java application running at the same time or just before, on PC.
Our environment is, Windows XP Pro. SP2, IE6 SP2 and Java 1.4.2_17.
I appreciate if someone can help us to understand what is the problem ( I have post a log file sample below), and the solution ?
    Regards,

  • [SOLVED]nm-applet taking too much memory (sometimes all the processes)

    Hello,
One of the reason i chose Archlinux (archbang) was to keep the system small to fit in my little 512MB of ram and i've been happy so far but for some reason i noticed that nm-applet is now taking a *lot* of memory, around 40mb while it didn't use that much.
Here is my ps_mem after a fresh boot:

I could live with an applet taking 40mb on a more beefy machine but being just behind chrome looks wrong. So i'm not sure what has changed, at the moment i just kill the process but i considered switching to wicd if it's ever better but it appears that it's not well maintained.
    Any hint?

    Thanks for your answers.
I needed to use my computer and it wasn't usable so i just reinstalled my distro and went back to normal, while tweaking the OS i made various reboots to check if it happened again and how...
And the problem of my system taking 240ish MB at boot vs 75MB is actually the nvidia drivers, after installing nvidia-304xx the memory went up a lot, but removing the driver and switching back to nouveau actually make the system way less greedy memory-wise, there is still a bit of mystery in one of the case where everything was fine but nm-applet but i think it's half solved here.
PS : I gave shot at zswap but it made my computer unusable and freeze a lot

I am not sure about the cause, however I have experienced hanging of the programme repeatedly. I have not been able to solve it otherwise than by ending the process via task manager (I am using Firefox 4.0.1 running on Win XP SP2). After doing so, a message appeared saying this:
    "sw: plugin-container.exe application error
Instruction at the address 0x0276609c referred to the memory address 0x00000014. Impossible to execute memory operation: read. End the programme by clicking on the OK button."
I am sorry if my translation is not correct enough. I have tried to google the instruction number, but to no avail. Thus I have decided to ask you for help.
    Thank you for your comprehension

Try going to http://www.mozilla.org/plugincheck and see if your plugins are out of date.

  • [solved]Removing applet from kdemod [my bad]

Well I had a clean install of KDE mod, tried to install xfce, then E, rebooted broke X, tried to troubleshoot, gave up reinstalled, messed that up, next day, reinstalled again.....
Went back to kde mod for now, but I have a question.
While trying to add an application to the panel, I accidentally added an applet "System monitor". How in the heck do I remove it, as it isn't nearly as informative as conky, or anything else for that matter...
Right clicking  and removing isn't there, when I right click on it.
Thanks in advance, and btw I think I may have learned a thing or two during the last two re-installs, lol.

It would have been nice if you wrote how you solved the problem: this way it will be a reference for future users with the same issue.
futureguy "Cool, this guy had my same problem, let's see how he solved it!"
    you "Nevermind, I solved it!"
    futureguy "Damn!"
Even if this was a trivial problem (as you probably forgot to unlock the panel), you can't really say.

  • Applet causes high CPU usage

    Hallo,
I have a strange problem with my applet. It displays medical images. After loading Image the CPU usage of java jiumps to 100% on single core processors and to 50% on 2 core processors, and stays high, without any interaction of user. I've used Java VisualVM to profile the applet and it says that: javax.swing.SystemEventQueueUtilities$ComponentWorkRequest.run() 94.76343 787851 ms (94,8%) 58823 times invoked is
I'm not sure this is the cause of the problem. I don't use any loops while noone is interacting with the applet. Has anyone idea or suggestion what's going wrong?
This CPU load is independent of browser and operating system. I've profiled it on firefox.
    with regards
    Rafal Ziolkowski

    Good job figuring it out.
Rule of thumb to prevent future problems: the paintComponent is used for painting and should do nothing else - setBorder() is a state change and thus does not belong in the paintComponent() method. You can all relate it back to a general programming rule of thumb: a function or method should perform only one task.

This just keeps repeating until I end the process with Ctrl-c
The specific update that cause this is:
    wxgtk
    wxpython
    wxgtk2.8
The wxgtk2.8 package was newly installed as certain packages require this version. Just to make sure, I removed wxgtk2.8, and downgraded wxgtk and wxpython, then playonlinux works without issue. Upgrading the system again causes this issue to appear again.
Edit: wxgtk upgrades from version 2.8.12.1-5 -> 3.0.0-2, and wxpython upgrades from version 2.8.12.1-4 -> 3.0.0.0-1
I have narrowed down the problem. Downgrading only wxpython to version 2.8.12.1-4 solves the problem.
Last edited by Daerandin (2014-01-12 02:32:41)

I'm on wxpython 3.0.0-2 and I'm still getting this issue, both on wxgtk 2.8.12.1-5 and 3.0.0-2.
And it might help to know that playonlinux depends on the package "wxgtk2.8" rather than wxgtk (and also wxpython2.8), which I can't install without borking my system and don't want to anyway because I use wxMupen64Plus, so I installed every other dep and -Sdd'd it.
EDIT: Scratch that, my error is actually similar but not the same:
Looking for python... 3.3.3 - skipped
    Looking for python2.7... 2.7.6 - selected
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File "mainwindow.py", line 32, in <module>
    wxversion.select('2.8')
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/site-packages/wxversion.py", line 152, in select
raise VersionError("Requested version of wxPython not found")
wxversion.VersionError: Requested version of wxPython not found
And it has the exact same output for either version of wxgtk. I'd test it on wxpython2.8, but that depends on wxgtk2.8, which I can't install without either uninstalling important packages like audacity or forcing conflict overwriting. It also loops this error forever until I CTRL+C.

  • [SOLVED]nm-applet doesnt load

hi i have just installed arch linux and this seems really cool.  i like it a lot (i still have a LOT of work to do to make it all the way i want) and im still gonna have to do a LOT of reading before im an expert at pacman and AUR amoung other things.
i just installed nm-applet bcause i want to connect to wireless networks but it fails to run.
in my gnome startup list i have nm-applet --sm-disable
i can connect manually in the terminal by using iwconfig.  this wont help me when i am at the university though since we have an 802.1x system (doesnt ever work great with linux by my expirience with different distros. nm-applet version .66 worked pretty well if i remember correctly though).
anyway how can i get nm-applet to work?
i tried to ask for help in the IRC but i got this statement
Please register with services and use the IDENTIFY command (/msg nickserv help) to speak in this channel
ill have to google that in the morning and figure out what needs to be done for that; im just too sleepy for it now
    thanks.

ok someone sent me a pm and said i needed to add networkmanger to my deamons list.  that seems to have worked for now.
i am interested in trying wicd to see if it works better with the 802.1x network at the university.
this is kinda a weird story:
i installed wicd.  there is a menu for it in applications.  i clicked on it and it complains about not being root (shouldnt it run the graphical su prompt? actually better yet i shouldnt need to be root to use it).  well anyway i tried to remove it and reboot and my keyboard and mouse would no longer work in gdm so i couldnt log in.  weird.  i started it up again in single user mode and reinstalled wicd and then the system worked fine again.  i have no idea how that happened.  still interested in giving wicd a chance.  i am a noob at arch but that sure didnt work in a way i would expect
EDIT: wicd loads up if i log in as root. btw regular user gets errors pertaining to not being root.
EDIT: oh never mind i needed to add myself to the network group. boy im silly.  i guess ill have to do some real world testing next time i go to the university to see which one works better. btw if anyone is searching this check out this wiki post http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Wicd
EDIT: marked this as solved. thanks for the help.

  • [SOLVED] xfce-panel causing problems with mouse/touchpad

Since upgrading the packages below  I mouseclicks occasionally do not work.  Also scrolling using the scrollwheel and touchpad doesn't start sometimes. I determined it is not a problem with the mouse or touchpad because 'xev' shows the correct events firing. Also  I see the icon change from arrow to hand when clicking.
    <edit>
It appears that "xfce4-panel" is the cause. I use tint2 instead of  xfce-panel, but the process running an empty panel is started by default and  somehow interfered with mouse and touchpad events. solved it by removing it from the session, and comment it out in /etc/xdg/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xfce4-session.xml

Go to 'System Settings' -> 'Application Appearance' -> 'Style' -> 'Fine Tuning' and change 'Menubar style' to 'Only export'. Just checked, works fine with qt applications.
I'm not sure about gtk apps, though. I recall reading somewhere that, in addition to installing appmenu-gtk and its dependencies, one needed to specify something in the .gtkrc and/or .config/gtk-3.0/settings.ini file(s). Well that or my memory might just be playing tricks on me.
    EDIT:
If for some reason gtk apps refuse to export their menus, you might want to look at this webupd8 article. Good luck!

  • [Solved] Nm-applet in Openbox doesn't save WiFi password

    Hi guys!
In this days I'm working on a Openbox desktop on my eeepc 1005HA...
For the wifi connection I have to use network-manager because wicd doesn't work well with the encription of my university (WPA2 Enterprise Tkip + cert)...
But nm-applet every boot asks me the wifi pass! There are 3 days that I scan google and forums for a solution but I haven't found it yet....
    I've already tried:
    1) unlock keyring modifying as is written in the wiki (doens't work)
    2) add gnome-keyring-daemon --start -c pkcs11 & in autostart.sh and then in rc.local (because so it starts before nm-applet)
    3) adding source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus or export GNOME_DESKTOP_SESSION_ID="openbox" in autostart.sh as i've read somewhere in the web, but nothing! Nm-applet don't save the password...
I don't know what try now....Someone has been able to get it work?
