[solved] Help troubleshoot Virtualbox hanging (possible btrfs related)

Sometime longer than a week ago I did not have this problem.
Yesterday I encountered it for the first time. Starting a windows 8 VM works all the way through the apps screen and then it just hangs. No way to quit virtualbox. Weirdly enough, Firefox is still working at this point but becomes unresponsive after a while as well. My WM (awesome) and terminals are unaffected, but kill/killall doesn't work.
On shutdown I see this error (first code box below). I have done btrfsck on all my partitions since then, still the same problem.
My pacman log for the past 10 days is in the second code box below. I have tried downgrading to linux-3.11.1-1 and 3.11-1 without success. 3.11-1 allows me to get past the apps screen, but once I open a document in the VM it becomes unresponsive again, so the bug is just being delayed.
This laptop is heavily used and no other unresponsivity was noted this past week prior to using VirtualBox.
Final point, I'm fully updated using [testing].
Any suggestions would be appreciated, I'm quite stumped at this point. Considering creating a new VM to test whether my image is faulty....

And after scratching my head with different kernels and rebuilding vboxdrv, I dug up an old VDI for this virtual machine and hey presto, doesn't seem to hang. Seems the btrfs errors were the symptom rather than the cause.

Someone could have stolen it in Kuwait...happens all the time .
Seriously...FaceTime is banned there...there is no way to add it back to your phone...if you wanted FaceTime, you should not have purchased your phone there.
BTW: You don't have any warranty or support for this phone in India.

  • [SOLVED] Help diagnosing nVidia video card

I've got a nVidia GT 240 that is producing some glitches on video playback.
Frames that become stuck and have to wait until a full refresh and sometimes, complete freezes.
    Also, this happened yesterday:
    http://img109.imageshack.us/img109/9318/d3zs.jpg
I use it only for video playback over HDMI to a 47" TV via XBMC.
I would need help troubleshooting it... I tested my ram with memtest86+ and it's fine, so there's nothing else that comes to mind that could be the problem. I don't know how to test a video card, though.
What would you suggest me to do?
    Last edited by Xi0N (2013-09-20 05:54:46)

OK: I meant, the problem is not related to the video card, it has nothing to do with the video card, th video card is fine,... if you want to know about what I have been through, you can see it in this thread:

  • How to download a .txt file correctly. Please help as soon as possible!

    Hi everybody,
I need to implement download that prompts the user to save a txt file.
If I use "attachment" in response.setHeader, my IE 5.50 crashes after downloading 4 to 6 files consecutively.
I tried to change the response.setHeader to "inline" and the response.setContentType to "application/zip" or "application/UNKNOWN", and although it works in IE 5.50, my IE 5.00 never prompts asking to save the file, it always opend the file into the browser window, and I need a prompt.
I saw many questions related with this problem in this forum, but none that answered accurately to this problem.
Please help as soon as possible, I dont have much time to do this.
    Thank you very much.

Thank you gypsy617 for your reply, but it still does not work!
I made all the changes to
    1)res.setContentType("application/x-download");
    2)res.setHeader("Content-Disposition", "attachment; filename=" + filename);
    3)OutputStream out = res.getOutputStream();
    4)returnFile(filename, out);
    5) and i sent the file content as bytes
But the real problem is regarding the "attachment" option !!!
In my application, in the same page, there are a lot of links that users can download, each one a link that calls a action. It works well for the first downloaded file, for the second, ..., and then, when we try to download the file number 4 or 5, IE says that there is a problem and it must close (and it asks us to send a report - something like "Exception Information Code:0xc0000005 Flags:0x00000000 Record:0x0000000000000000 Address:0x0000000077a7710a").
I know that the problem is the "attachment" because if I choose "inline", IE never crashes. But i really need a Save As dialog, the txt files cannot be openned into the browser window, so i cant use inline.
    Any idea?
    Thank you.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

    - Sign out of the App Store (in the Store menu)
    - Quit the App Store
    - In Finder - Go>Go to folder...  (or Apple-shift-G)
    - Paste in the following "~/Library/Caches/ "
    - It will take you to a folder.  Delete com.apple.appstore
    - Launch the App Store.
If that doesn't work, try an App Store reset and then try again.

I brought iphone 5s to local i centre in Armenia, they opened the phone and said that they can't solve the problem, is it possible to send it to US for repair ?

If some unauthorized shop opened the iPhone and attempted a repair, then Apple will no longer touch the iPhone. If they didn't attempt repairs, then Apple might be willing to service it, but only in the country in which the iPhone was originally sold. If that was in the US, then you will need to take the iPhone there yourself, or you will need to send the iPhone to someone you know in the US who can take or send it to Apple for service and then send it back to you. Apple will not accept shipments from outside the country.
    Regards.

  • SOLVED: Laptop Sound Distorting! Possible Solution?

Ok people, I've got the solution. The answer may not be exactly what most people want to hear but it is a sure-fire way to fix the sound issue IF it is a problem with Windows 7. This will not help if the problem is hardware related. All you have to do is reinstall Windows 7, I know "scary" and "difficult". But really, it's not. Don't be scared or worried. I was, but now I could restore any computer to Factory Conditions with confidence. You can too! Don't worry, you don't need any disks.
Just restart your computer and click F12 when you see the "TOSHIBA" BIOS screen. You have to use the Toshiba Option when restoring to factory conditions. This will reinstall Windows 7 and all programs that came with your laptop. MAKE SURE TO BACK UP ALL INFORMATION!!! It is probably a very good a idea to create a system image of your hard drive so that you can restore you computer exactly as you currently have it incase something goes wrong. Follow the steps and you'll have a brand new computer and your problem will be gone! I wish you all good luck, respond if you have questions.
    Original Message:
    Hello there,
I have owned my Toshiba Laptop for about 6 months. I own the A665 Model. It has an i3 intel processor and 4 gb ram. Only recently have I experienced problems.
My problem, which seems to be common as I've seen in other posts, is that the sound from my speakers distorts whenever there is ANY sound. For example, when I listen to Pandora Internet Radio, I'll ONLY hear the music, but the voices will sound distant and very soft. Any other noise will freeze momentarily and then crackle and continue.
I have an interesting observation that I'd like to make known though... I recently installed another OS and run this machine as a DUAL Boot system. My two OSes are Linux Ubuntu and Windows 7. On Ubuntu, my sound works PERFECTLY. There is absolutly no distortion, pausing, crackling, static--nothing! I think this is interesting and would like someone who is more informed to give their opinion. I have already updated all of my drivers, updated my bios, removed my battery and held power for 30 sec, and have tried most all other suggestions offered on forums. I am almost certain that the problem lies with Windows 7. It must be software or driver related BECAUSE the sound works perfectly when I boot into Ubuntu. No one else has mentioned this. Please respond. Thank you.
I have attached a paint file with my System Information.

Specifically which A665 model do you own, like Satellite A665-S6088, and what is your model's part number like PSAW0U-04D031? Look on the Toshiba label on the bottom of your computer.

  • [SOLVED] need help with virtualbox install

I'm a relative n00b to Arch, haging migrated from Ubuntu (pha!!). Arch rocks!
However, my beloved virtualbox isnt playing ball!
After many hours of getting arch up and running I now need some assitance please with VirtualBox PEUL. I've googled and search these wikis and found:
    http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd
    http://www.mail-archive.com/vbox-users% … 02889.html
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox
but, I dont know how to install.
I used yaourt (having spent another many hours trying to get to speed with what Arch AUR is and yaourt!!)
    This is what I did:
    1. Visited http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox and followed PEUL instructions...
    2. Click on AUR link and then click on PKGBUILD and it downloaded a PKGBUILD from here http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?d … s=0&SeB=nd
    3. Then went back to the wiki http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/VirtualBox  and clicked on VirtualBox_1.5.6-1_Linux_x86.run and downloaded the file.
    4. In accordance with the instructions on the wiki, I ran makepkg
    HOWEVER, I get errors!!:
    # makepkg --asroot
    ==> Making package: virtualbox_bin 1.5.6-1 (Thu May 1 20:06:33 BST 2008)

Can anyone help please? In Ubuntu all this was just installed with dpkg -i VirtualBox.deb
I'm sure Arch is just as "simple" :-)

Good idea, I checked this out originally but it didnt work so I went for "manual" install.
The download from yaourt never starts, just hangs - the server is dead or something?? ...
    # yaourt -S virtualbox_bin

    Hello!
Thanks a lot for this package :o)
Just a quick comment about where to copy the Sun .run package. It should be put to where the tarball from AUR was extracted.
In my case, it is /home/[users]/virtualbox-bin/
    Cheers

Can't get the kernel module working in 2.6.25, vbox_build_module completes fine, but I get the following error:
    $ sudo modprobe vboxdrv
FATAL: Error inserting vboxdrv (/lib/modules/2.6.25-ARCH/misc/vboxdrv.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Maybe you could find this instructions helpful
    http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg02889.html
I've not tried this myself but I will do it soon and post the info here. Maybe create a separate package for 2.6.25 kernels it's a good idea.

The vboxdrv from the mailinglist of virtualbox runs here without problems on 2.6.25 with vbox 1.5.6

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox hangs the host computer

    Hi all,
It's been some time since I experience this annoying bug :
Virtualbox completely hangs my computer whenever I click on the "configuration" for any virtual machine.
Even the magic sysreqs keys are not able to recover (they are enabled in /etc/sysctl.conf) , I'm obliged to hard reboot my machine
However, I can go into other menus in the GUI without problems. VMs work ok as well.
    My host system :
    3.7.8-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Fri Feb 15 03:39:05 EET 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    virtualbox 4.2.6-1
    virtualbox-host-modules 4.2.6-6
    no proprietary extension pack.
(kernel was upgraded today and the computer rebooted, virtualbox-host-modules were updated as well)
    Using KDE 4.10
    Nvidia integrated graphics (xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.6-1)
Thanks for any help on how to overcome this bug!

    Problem seems to be solved.
All I did was to click "remove all the warnings" in the Help menu, and remove some older VM files which might have been corrupt.

  • Advice needed on possible virus related prob - please help!

    Evening everyone,
I previously posted on here about an issue I was having with my external hard drive not mounting. I erased it and got it to mount but now I get an error message saying File could not be transferred as it could not be read or written.
I have recently come to suspect I might be harbouring viruses on my macbook as one turned up on my pendrive and on some email attatchments I've sent and was wondering if you think this could be causing the problem with the hard drive? If not - what might be? I've read that some people think it's a prob with tiger. Also can anyone recommend some virus software? I know a lot of people use clam but does that work with intel macs? Also I don't know much about the technical side of things and it doesn't look too user friendly - do you think it would be worth buying a full package like Norton?
Thanks in advance for all of your help!

    Hi Sherman,
Thanks for your help! The ignore ownership box was already ticked. Tried to repair the disk and it did find errors but the repair did not work - it says that the underlying task report failure on exit. Any more suggestions? Is it not possible that I am harbouring a PC virus - it isn't affecting my mac but could it not be playing havoc with the hard drive? Or is that just broken and I should send it back?
I am currently studying in spain for the year but am from the UK and will be back there this weekend so am hoping to sort the problem out before then, or go visit the genius bar in london while I am home.
    Thanks again!
