[SOLVED] installing b43 driver

#Edit: got this fixed; please see post 9 for an easy solution if you have the same problem & don't want to read the whole (probably confusing) thread.
Hi everyone,
Tried to install my wifi multiple times... and it's being super annoying.
I'm using a Packard Bell Dot S (Model Kav60) and it has a
01:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g LP-PHY [14e4:4315] (rev 01)
so basically a BCM 4312 driver.
The computer "told" me to use https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/en/users/drivers/b43, but that link linked to an older site, so I used http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/
I've tried installing b43-cutter, but I am stuck on the place where it says:
If verification of the GPG signature fails due to an unknown key, you need to import the following key:
Key ID = 4203454C
Key fingerprint = 757F AB7C ED18 14AE 15B4  836E 5FB0 2747 4203 454C
I don't know how to import it, and it doesn't explain how.
Would one of you explain how to do that?
That would be great!
(P.S. it's quite possible there will be more questions after, as I don't know if installing b43-fwcutter will work & also I'll have to activate the network...)

Hmm good point about the AUR. The method I was trying to use didn't use the AUR package & I think it might be outdated...
The computer "told" me to use those websites
When I do this ... as well as on boot up...
dmesg | grep firmware
[    9.138816] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load for b43/ucode15.fw failed with error -2
[    9.138900] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load for b43/ucode15.fw failed with error -2
[    9.138959] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load for b43-open/ucode15.fw failed with error -2
[    9.139003] b43 ssb0:0: Direct firmware load for b43-open/ucode15.fw failed with error -2
[    9.139349] b43-phy0 ERROR: You must go to http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Dri … cefirmware and download the correct firmware for this driver version. Please carefully read all instructions on this website.
Thank you for suggestions.
I have checked this out: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_wireless (as well as other pages)
What confused me is that some people disagree about some of the info on there, as the page seems to show... as well as the fact that these manuals just don't deal with all the detailed steps in detail (I am a newbie...)
But basically, when installing b43 according to the instructions from http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/ a there is gpg verification problem.
I encounter the problem after step 2:
   1 wget http://bues.ch/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2 http://bues.ch/b43/fwcutter/b43-fwcutte … ar.bz2.asc
   2 gpg --verify b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2.asc
"gpg: assuming signed data in 'b43-fwcutter-018.tar.bz2'
gpg: Signature made Mon 29 Jul 2013 21:22:47 CEST using RSA key ID 4203454C
gpg: Can't check signature: No public key"
I've tried using packer as well (which uses the AUR), but am currently following the method on http://linuxwireless.sipsolutions.net/e … ivers/b43/ as I mentioned.
To be honest all the different information out there is confusing!
I'll try to use the AUR without packer, and see what happens.
Thank you

  • [Wireless] MBP 9,1, error when installing b43 driver

    I followed the guide for the 9,2 Macbook Pros, and tried to install the driver for b43. However, I get the following error when I run 'make':
    gamma% make
    make -C /lib/modules/3.13.7-1-ARCH/build M=/home/glitch/compat-drivers-2013-03-28-5 modules

    make[1]: Leaving directory '/usr/lib/modules/3.13.7-1-ARCH/build'
    Makefile:103: recipe for target 'modules' failed
    make: *** [modules] Error 2
    I didn't find anything in the wiki about this, so I'm turning to the forum.

    That page gives some horrible advice.  Not only are you trying to build a module that is already included in the kernel, but this page tells you to do it in a way that will result in untracked files in /usr.   Essentailly you are trying to build a module from 9 months ago for the current kernel.  Even if this were what you needed to do, you should be using the Arch packaging tools to install it with pacman (its actually super easy).
    If you still want to use b43, just install the b43-firmware from the AUR.  This will pull the firmware out of the broadcom sta driver with the b43-fwcutter package and use it for the b43 modules.

  • [SOLVED]Installing it87 driver for lm_sensors support

    Hello,
    I've done much research on how to properly install an update it87 driver that could make 0x8620 work.
    I ran sensors-detect and ran into this:
    # sensors-detect revision 6209 (2014-01-14 22:51:58 +0100)
    # System: Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z97X-Gaming 7
    This program will help you determine which kernel modules you need
    to load to use lm_sensors most effectively. It is generally safe
    and recommended to accept the default answers to all questions,
    unless you know what you're doing.
    Some south bridges, CPUs or memory controllers contain embedded sensors.
    Do you want to scan for them? This is totally safe. (YES/no): y

    Some Super I/O chips contain embedded sensors. We have to write to
    standard I/O ports to probe them. This is usually safe.

    Some systems (mainly servers) implement IPMI, a set of common interfaces
    through which system health data may be retrieved, amongst other things.
    We first try to get the information from SMBIOS. If we don't find it
    there, we have to read from arbitrary I/O ports to probe for such
    interfaces. This is normally safe. Do you want to scan for IPMI
    interfaces? (YES/no): y

    Some hardware monitoring chips are accessible through the ISA I/O ports.
    We have to write to arbitrary I/O ports to probe them. This is usually
    safe though. Yes, you do have ISA I/O ports even if you do not have any

    Lastly, we can probe the I2C/SMBus adapters for connected hardware
    monitoring devices. This is the most risky part, and while it works
    reasonably well on most systems, it has been reported to cause trouble
    on some systems.
    Do you want to probe the I2C/SMBus adapters now? (YES/no): y

    Now follows a summary of the probes I have just done.
    Just press ENTER to continue:

    Do you want to overwrite /etc/conf.d/lm_sensors? (YES/no):

    Unloading i2c-dev... OK
    Unloading cpuid... OK
    So I did some research and found that this was updated and available as a potential driver for my MOBO:
    http://www.lm-sensors.org/wiki/Devices
    You will see the IT8620E which covers the unknown chip lm_sensors found.
    I downloaded the file, extracted it and tried to do a
    sudo make
    but I ran into an error because it was looking for
    KERNEL_BUILD := /usr/src/linux-headers-$(TARGET)
    which is NOT in that directory. I installed the linux-headers and saw that it adds files to
    /lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH
    . I modified the Makefile and it got past that part but it ran into another error during
    make install
    After much frustration I looked and saw
    usr/lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko.gz
    so now I'm questioning if I even need to install this driver or if I need to update it. Is there a way to learn more about these drivers that come in the linux package?
    I can't find anything concrete on how to make this work. I'm just trying to add my fan speeds and other junk to my conky!
    Edit:
    modinfo it87 gave me this result:
    filename: /lib/modules/3.19.3-3-ARCH/kernel/drivers/hwmon/it87.ko.gz
    license: GPL
    description: IT8705F/IT871xF/IT872xF hardware monitoring driver

    intree: Y
    vermagic: 3.19.3-3-ARCH SMP preempt mod_unload modversions
    parm: force_id:Override the detected device ID (ushort)
    parm: update_vbat:Update vbat if set else return powerup value (bool)
    parm: fix_pwm_polarity:Force PWM polarity to active high (DANGEROUS) (bool)
    So, this tells me that this driver does not cover 8620.

    Update:
    I believe after some researching and actually going for it that I managed to install the it87 test driver.
    I modified the Makefile on this line:
    KERNEL_BUILD := /lib/modules/$(TARGET)/build
    And when it failed on this line:
    SYSTEM_MAP := /boot/System.map-$(TARGET)
    I did:
    sudo cp /proc/kallsyms /boot/System.map-`uname -r`
    Because Arch doesn't put this file there because it isn't needed to boot...I think.
    Either way it finished and I was able to use the lm_sensors.

  • [SOLVED] Installing Calalyst driver, with Radeon HD 2600

    My iMac crashes  to a gray screen when I try to startx.
    This situation arose about a month ago after doing a big upgrade, as I hadn't been able to upgrade with pacman & yaourt for the previous month.
    I saw the problem as being caused by the upgraded Catalyst drivers/utils, in combination with the x.server upgrade.
    Anyway, yesterday I upgraded all again, & then removed the Catalyst driver & utils, then followed the Arch wiki regarding installing the open drivers for my radeon HD card.
    After installing the open drivers I could once again load Openbox & see my beloved Arch again.  BUT, it is too laggy to use.  I could watch a movie on the machine, which was somewhat jerky at times but watchable.  Scrolling in Firefox is so delayed that I can't live with it.
    I followed the Arch wiki instructions for optimizing the open driver; doing one thing at a time & restarting x, to test, but they did not help the situation.
    So, (at long last )  my question is, will I be buying into trouble by downgrading X & using the previous version of the Catalyst drivers & utils?
    I have to ask the question as I really am no Linux tech' wizard.
    I was very happy with the way Arch was working for me over the previous year or so.

    I just tried to remove libgl & get a pile of errors telling me that 5 different packages require it?
    I tried the -f as well, it had no effect.
    The errors were  as follows:
    error:failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
    :: ati-dri: requires libgl>=7.4.2
    :: capseo: requires libgl
    :: mesa: requires libgl
    :: xorg-server: requires libgl
    :: xorg-utils: requires libgl
    So I then did a -Rfd libgl  which removed it.
    After which I did another -S catalyst which certainly did a lot more than my previous attempts, though it left me with the following error as its last line:
    missing dependency for ati-dri : libgl>=7.4.2
    I'll now check if it works?
    After a warm boot, things are looking good.
    Thanks for your kind & descriptive help  Uruz2012.
    It is amazing just how few words of help it can take to make a totally useless computer system fully functional again.   Now  I can escape from the Leopard install that I have been forced to use on this machine, prior to my finally getting serious about attempting to fix it.
    Thanks so much, again, for your help in healing my computer...

  • [Solved] Need 'make' command to install nic driver - can I d/l to usb?

    I have a Linhes box running archlinux. The pc has a realtek driver that does not work. I have the updated driver that will work but as I have no internet access on the pc I need to install the driver from a usb stick. However, I cannot run the 'make' command because it is not installed. I cannot install anything from pacman because I have no internet access. So my question is can I download whatever I need (base-devel?) from another pc and install it through a usb stick so that I can then install the realtek driver?

    lucke wrote:"make" belongs to a make package, and this package depends only on sh and glibc. Use the "Download from mirror" link on http://www.archlinux.org/packages/core/i686/make/ (change the version to x86_64 if needed by following the link below "Download from mirror") and pacman -U that package on the destination pc.
    Thanks, that looks like just what I need. Can you confirm that I do not extract the package, I just put it on to the usb and then as root pacman -U /path/to/package?

  • [SOLVED] Need help in installing Video Driver.

    Hi,
    I am installing Arch Linux on Virtual Box. I need small help.
    I have followed http://lifehacker.com/5680453/build-a-k … he-process this guide.
    I am done with basic install (till audio). Now I want to install video driver.
    lspci | grep VGA             in my Arch installation (Virtual Box) gives me
    VGA compatible controller InnoTek Systemberatung GmbH VirtualBox Graphics Adapter
    On my Ubuntu (Host), I get
    VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
    When I do  pacman -Ss xf86-video | less , I do not see both the drivers in list.
    Now my question is which driver I choose for Virtual Box and which Driver should I choose when finally I am going to install Arch Linux as seperate OS ( Not on Virtual Box but standalone).
    Once I get familiar with Installation on Virtual Box, I am going to install Arch for triple boot (Windows XP, Ubuntu and Arch Linux ).
    Note that I want to install GNOME 3 shell afterwards.
    Thank you.

    First you need to follow these instructions: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Vi … ns_package
    then proceed here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Be … ptional.29
    You can't use the drivers for the Intel card in the guest OS, if you have enabled all this you still should be able to run Gnome3 Shell.

    Hi,
    First install correct MS-UAA:
    MS-UAA for XP with SP2 (required with a reboot before Audio and Modem) here
    MS-UAA for XP with SP3 (required with a reboot before Audio and Modem) here
    Only when you will do this download:
    Conexant High-Definition SmartAudio 221 here
    Unzip to a folder..use Device Manager,right click "Audio Device on HD",choose Update driver,
    No to connect,
    Install from a list or specific location,
    Select Don't Search, I will choose the driver to install,
    For the Hardware Type select 'Show All Devices'
    Remove the check from "Show Compatible Hardware" and click on "Have Disk".
    Next...browse to the unzipped folder and choose the "WiSVHe5.inf".
    Ignore XP when it complains.
    Reboot.

  • Wireless does not hold connection with b43 driver!

    Hi everybody!!
    It's my first time here in the forum, so nice to meet you.
    I have a laptop Acer Aspire 3050 and I recently formatted it to install the new Arch 2009.08.
    It's pretty cool, but I can't make my wireless card (Broadcom BCM4318) work with b43 driver. It worked very well with Arch 2009.02, but now it's a pain!
    It recognizes the driver, loads it and connect with no problems, but when I ping my desktop machine, it says that unfortunate message "Destination Host Unreachable"
    It sometimes works when I do these commands about 5 or 10 times:
    ./connect
    ping 192.168.0.1 >>> Destination Host Unreachable
    ifconfig wlan0 down
    rmmod b43
    /etc/rc.d/network restart
    modprobe b43
    ./connect
    [... many more times]
    but even when it does connect, it usually can't hold the connection for more than 15 or 20 minutes. And I have to do it all again.
    Hear goes some info on configuration files so it may help you:
    lspci -vk
    08:04.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce One 54g] 802.11g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

    gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond hal)
    I've already tried many different configurations in rc.conf, but it still does not estabilish a connection in the first try.
    I'm using the driver from the wiki (http://mirror2.openwrt.org/sources/broa … .5.tar.bz2) and did not try with only ndiswrapper. It's because I want to have all functionalities from criptography and... after all, it was supposed to work, wasn't it?
    Where could be the problem? The driver version? Or bad configuration?
    Thanks in advance!! If you need more information, please ask.

    So, the same problem occurred and in a relatively shorter time than before. I began to think that something is causing this problem.
    My theory is that it is a VMWare software issue. What I've been doing differently recently is using it in "Unity" mode as opposed to "Full Screen" mode. My guess is that the program is modifying my wireless permissions and screwing it all up.
    So, what I've done is set the "Network Adapter" to "Host-Only". This denies the VMWare program internet access but still allows file sharing between the Windows virtual environment and the Mac hard drive.
    Then I had to re-install Mac OS X all over again to fix the wireless settings/permissions mess.

    installed second drive- WD 750GB 7500BPKT but OS doesnt see it contacted WD and these have no built in drives, they sent me to OS for support, but as it was OEM, they sent me for support here. help please. Thanks

    Hi,
    You probably need to format the new HDD - try the following.
    Hold down the Windows Key and press R.  Into the Run Box type compmgmt.msc and hit enter.  Click Disk Management in the left pane and let the drives load up.  Right click on your new HDD and select Format to start the Wizard.  Windows 7 will assign a Volume Label so if your happy with this, just leave the default one.  File system is normally NTFS.  Allocation Unit Size should be left as the default value.  Select the option to perform a Quick Format if it is not already selected.  Leave any other settings as default and click Ok and Ok again to start the process.
    When this has completed, your new HDD should now appear when you look under Computer.
    Regards,
    DP-K

    Hi: Your notebook is not supported by HP for W8. I would connect by ethernet, take the free upgrade to W8.1 and then download the W8.1 drivers you need. You can try this driver from a HP business notebook but I think you will have the same issue. http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/swd/public/detail?sp4ts.oid=6943827&swItemId=ob_145419_1&swEnvOid=4058#

  • Os 10.7.5; problems to install the driver for Officejet Pro 8600

    I have just bougt the Officejet Pro 8600. First I tried the installation disc at the reply was that I had to conntact HP to get the latest installation version. So I did. Downloaded for the HP homepage at got the driver. When installing I got the same answer: get the latest version.  Any suggestion so I could connect my iMac to the new printer?

    Hi Heistein,
    Welcome to the HP Forums.
    I understand you are having trouble with installing the driver.
    I would recommend to take a look through this guide. An 'Unsupported Operating System' Message Displays on a Mac Running OS X 10.7 Lion.
    Hope this information helps, and have a great day.
