[Solved] No audio with Intel HDA

I can't seem to get audio on my fresh (first) install of Arch. I had sound when I had ubuntu/trisquel installed, but when I switched to archlinux I can't seem to figure how to get it to work.
I have already unmuted my speakers/etc. in alsamixer. I can hear my system beep/makerandomnoises when I, for example, try to hit tab/autofill and nothing is there to fill in terminal; or when I try to backspace and there is nothing left to delete and it results in a beep (not sure if that matters).
The sound cards that alsamedia shows are; Intel HDA PCH, and Intel HDA HDMI.

Yes, I was using alsamixer to unmute.
Besides unmute, I haven't done much. I don't know where asound.conf is located.

  • Low Volume with Intel HDA ALC889

    Hi,
I have a Intel board with Intel HDA ALC889 and I get sound out of it without problems. To get a half-decent volume, I have to set all volume controls (i.e. Master, PCM, Front) to 100 %, but sometimes it is still too quiet. Additionally, when I increase Mic Boost for Skype, all that gets louder is the background noise.
Sorry for the German locale, but here is the output of aplay -l:
    $ aplay -l

Is there any solution to get a better volume?
    Thanks in advance.
    Kind regards

    No one with a clue?
Well, I already tried to set
    options snd-hda-intel model=intel-x58
according to http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation … Models.txt as I'd say my board is nearest to a X58 board. But that didn't change anything.
Can it be a hardware "problem" or something else? Until now, I'm unwilling to spend money on an additional sound card if there is a solution...

  • [SOLVED] Choppy sound with Intel audio card

Ever since I bought this laptop and installed Arch, I have experienced this annoying choppiness.
What happens is that when I highlight other windows, under the minimum memory/cpu load the sound is truncated. I can't listen to music pleasantly on my laptop, and I can't stand it.
My laptop is a HP 530, with an integrated Intel audio card. This is the output from hwd -s:
    Sound(a) : 82801G ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller module: snd-hda-intel
I have 1Gb of RAM, and the processor doesn't seem very busy when the sound is truncated. This happens under any DE/WM - even in tty!
For what is worth, I had problems with the speakers not muting when the headphones were plugged in, and I have followed the method indicated here.
    Thanks for your time.

Auto is the default, it might not be resolving the model correctly (that's the case with my laptop).  Try model=hp.
If that doesn't work, you could try turning off power saving:
    options snd-hda-intel power_save=0

  • [SOLVED] Boot Resolution with Intel Haswell GPU and KMS

    Dear All,
This thread is a follow up of this one: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=189562. I created a new thread as I think the focus of the problem has shifted and the old title might be misleading and lead to helpful people ignoring the thread. I hope this is ok. Please correct me if I did not behave correctly.
I think most of the "flashes" I see come from X switching from native resolution (3200x1800) which is used when starting, to 1920x1080, which I set in the configuration file.
So my question is: how can I have the 1920x1080 resolution at boot (i.e. during early boot, using the KMS and including the i915 driver in mkinitcipo?):
    I tried:
    1) Creating the configuration file in xorg.conf.d and including it into the mkinicpio
    2) Setting the GRUB_GFX_MODE
    3) Using the EDID method (with built-in resolution 1920x1080) as described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ke … s_and_EDID
    4) Using uvesafb as described in the WIKI: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/uvesafb
Nothing worked. X starts during boot always with the same native resolution, the switches to 1920x1080 when GDM starts. Can you please suggest a method to set the boot resolution? It is for sure technically possible as Ubuntu does it when installed on the same hardware.. I think I just haven't found a way...

Ok, answering my own question, it would appear that adding video=1920x1080 does the trick. However, I still see a lot of flashing (I think that people call it flickering)

  • [SOLVED] Yet another microphone capture with Intel HD Audio 82801H

    Hello,
    I have a macbook pro 4.1.
I have been using Gentoo for years and after wanting to change, I decided to go for Arch Linux.
So I reinstalled my macbook with Arch and so far, I can't make the audio work correctly.
    My problems are:
    - no microphone working
    - no switch between speakers and headphones when I plug them
Here is the output of lspci:
    lspci | grep -i audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)
    My modprobe.d/soud.conf:
    alias char-major-116 snd
    alias char-major-14 soundcore
    alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
    #alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    #alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    options snd-hda-intel model=mb5 enable_msi=1 power_save=0
    #options snd-hda-intel model=laptop
    alias /dev/mixer snd-mixer-oss
    alias /dev/dsp snd-pcm-oss
    alias /dev/midi snd-seq-oss
As you can see, I tried several "model=" options (mb, laptop, ...). Only the "mb5" allows me to hear something from the speaker.
I discussed about my Gentoo experience because on this same laptop, I had it working perfectly on a kernel 2.6.39.
So I thought maybe some option in the ARCH kernel conflicts with it (I am kind of desperate).
I therefore compiled a custom kernel and removed a lot of modules that were useless for me... still no luck!
As a note, on Gentoo, I didn't have to specify the model.
To be fully complete in my description, on Gentoo, I was on 64 bits and here, I'm on 32 (for different reasons).
And I have Pulseaudio installed, not that I want to but as I like Gnome 3... But even without (unsintalling Gnome 3 and Pulseaudio), I still had the same issues, so to me, it doesn't seem to be coming from Pulseaudio, but I could be wrong.
And to answer the obvisous: no I don't have anything muted on alsamixer except "Line" and "Beep".
Thanks in advance for your help because it drives me a bit crazy...

Welcome to Arch! I run both Arch and Gentoo and like them both. I have my doubts that your sound problem is an Arch specific issue (but stranger things have happened).
If my google-fu is any good, it seems that the general consensus on getting ALSA to behave with a Macbook Pro 4.1 is:
       options snd_hda_intel model=mbp3
    Here's just one (old) example:
    http://osdir.com/ml/linux.ports.mactel. … 00003.html
    You tried that one yet?

The nvidia section of the pulseaudio page on the wiki looks similar. I don't see anything in the instructions there that would make the solution nvidia-specific. I would consider giving it a shot to start here but replace "device=hw:1,7" with "device=hw:0,7".
Maybe, the name of the section needs changing to something more generic than just nvidia. Eg, it may be more appropriate to call it just "HDMI Configuration" with a note about which cards it's known to apply to.

  • [SOLVED] No sound on SPDIF with Intel ICH10 Sound Card

    Hi everyone,
I'm coming from Fedora 12 and recently got a fresh installed Archlinux. I'm very satisfied by the distribution and everything works just as expect for the moment, except one thing : SPDIF output of my sound card.
I installed the following packages :

    local/alsa-firmware 1.0.20-2
    ALSA firmware package
    local/alsa-lib 1.0.22-1

    Extra alsa plugins
    local/alsa-utils 1.0.22-2

    The following command :

gives me sound on the analog (HP) output but this one :
    $ aplay -D iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0 tmp/Norrlanda.wav
gives absolutly nothing (I tested the HDMI output and it's fully functionnal).
I unmuted everything that could be unmuted on alsamixer and tested varied combo of options snd_hda_intel model=XXXX (as I read that those type of card can have issue of this kind). I try to delete the /etc/asound.state file, various configuration in /etc/asound.conf. But nothing.
In last resort, I rebooted on a F12 LiveCD and there… everything works fine ! The SPDIF output works just great, without any manipulation (with the same command as above). I tried to import the configuration of /etc/alsa, /etc/pulse and /etc/modprobe.d from this F12 LiveCD (looking if there was any special options about sound card I can just copy/paste to Archlinux) but this failed one more time.
I really really don't see what I can do to solve this problem (and I already spend 2 entire days on this issue without any result… frustrating). So if someone's got a solution or suggestion (some configurations I can try) on this issue, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thx to jonnor on the IRC Archlinux Channel, it works now !!
For everyone experiencing the same problem with DG45 intel sound card (Codec: IDT 92HD73E1X5 to be accurate), the documented module is not the right one. Use model=no-jd if you want to have the SPDIF output functionnal.

  • (Solved) [Intel HDA] Headphones not detected

    Hi there,
I'm having an annoying issue since I've installed (and re-installed) Arch on my netbook.
Everything's alright (except Gnash, but I'll google that later), the internal speakers work perfectly but when I put my headphones or my speakers (ext.) the internal speakers are "muted-off" (so the jack is detected, right?) but nothing's coming out from my headphones/speakers.
    Here's my aplay -l out :
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: Conexant Digital [Conexant Digital]
    Subdevices: 1/1
    Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
And here is my amixer output:
    Simple mixer control 'Master',0
    Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined
Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right
    Limits: Playback 0 - 65536

Front Right: Playback 65536 [100%] [on]
    Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
    Capabilities: cvolume cswitch cswitch-joined
Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right
    Limits: Capture 0 - 65536
Front Left: Capture 27636 [42%] [off]
Front Right: Capture 27636 [42%] [off]
and a lspci | grep Audio output:
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation NM10/ICH7 Family High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)
My headphones are plugged-in since I booted.
Another problem is that when I'm launching alsamixer there's only the master (Card: PulseAudio - Chip: PulseAudio). So, I make F6 > "1 HDA Intel" and I have other channels :
    Master (100 & unmuted) - PCM (100 & unmunted) - Mic (0 & muted) - S/PDIF (muted) - S/PDIF Default PCM (unmuted) - Beep (86 & muted) - Internal Mic (0 & muted) -- (Card: HDA Intel - Chip: Conexant CX20549 (Venice))
This is strange because on my former installation of Arch (on the same PC) the "default" alsamixer had exactly the same channels and the "Master only" didn't 'exists'. (But I had the same problems).
I tried a bunch of solutions I found but none worked.
    alsa-utils alsa-plugins & alsa-oss are installed (base-devel too if it can help).
I'm using SLiM & Cinnamon and had the same issue with LXDM & LXDE (same computer).
So if somebody could gave me a little bit of his light it'll be much appreciated!
    Thank you, Flaco
*Edit: Since I've rebooted with the headphones plugged-in the internal speakers don't work neither... but it may be something else; I tried a lot of solutions so maybe there's conflict between some files and/or process...
**Edit: Internal speakers issue solved. I might have touched some stuffs on pavucontrol before... anyway, the headphones are still a problem...
***Edit: I've booted (on a live usb) on Lubuntu to see what's happening and... still no sound. The jack input might be broken; I'll open my computer to see what's happening and to repair (or not) it.

  • [SOLVED]Problem with Realtek HDA and ATI HDMI Default card under ALSA

I have the usual problem about no audio on flash or VLC. I use Realtek HDA as primary sound card but is not detected as the default one. I checked the wikia, and forum post but no fix. After reading some info on a gentoo page, and some in the ALSA wiki I see both of them uses snd_hda_intel, so I cannot blacklist or use "option snd_hda_intel index=0" I've tried also searching on Google, but not luck. Anyone know how to fix it? Thanks!

I just added a section to the ALSA wiki page that should work perfectly for you: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Alsa#In_User_Space

  • No sound with snd-hda-intel (Realtek ALC260)

    Hello,
I've been trying to make my sound work with no success, i'm basically in the same case as this topic : https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=17347 but hints are references to now dead links.
I've played with modprobe and different settings like :
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel
    options snd-hda-intel model=generic
    with no success.
Here some more infos on my system :
    [caribou@arch ~]$ lsmod|grep snd

(unfortunately i don't have any headphones to test if that part is working)
    Thanks for your help.

I removed the three lines and rebooted.
I'm not sure what i should test with pavucontrol but there is at least a VUmeter corresponding to a song i'm playing.
    I did a speaker-test again still nothing.

  • [solved]black screen with xorg 1.6 after resume (intel)

after upgrading to xorg-server 1.6 no matter if i use s2ram or s2disk, first resume works fine, the second suspend and resume results in a black screen without any chance to swich to any tty.
i have read about bug like this which was resolved with using intel legacy driver. however my problem still occures.
maybe there is some module i should load/unload/reload on hibernate/wake-up?
here is my xorg.conf, lspci, Xorg.0.log.old (the one i had to kill with black screen) and Xorg.0.log

    took a look into everything.log.
    that line looks pretty suspicious:
kernel: [drm:i915_get_vblank_counter] *ERROR* trying to get vblank count for disabled pipe 0
it occures around the time i did the last resume.
here is a relevant snippet from everything.log:

  • [SOLVED] After migrating to x86_64 Intel HDA sound no longer works

I've been using ArchLinux x86 on the same system for quite a while, but I decided to give x86_64 a try again so I reinstalled Arch (by reinstall I mean a clean one - including / partition format).
Whenever I try to play a sound "socket(): Address family not supported by protocol" error comes up. If the same application tries to access audio devices again, no error is being repeatedly outputed again, thus it still hangs for a few seconds. For instance, if I receive a new mail on Thunderbird application, it has to play a sound while showing a notification, but not only that it doesn't, it also hangs for a few seconds.
"alsaconf" does not find my sound card, even though it is listed in lspci:
    ernestas ~ $ lspci | grep dio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
    ernestas ~ $
I've tried many solutions I could find online, but none worked. ALSA did find my card while using x86 version of ArchLinux with newest packages. Could anyone help me out?

  • The Audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC268 Analog) doesn't work.

Every time I login to KDE through KDM, the notification gives me this message: "The Audio playback device HDA Intel (ALC268 Analog) doesn't work. Falling back to default"
Everytime I try to play an audio file, the notification gives me the same message.
But everything else such as system sound, online video work.
What can I do to make it work?
    thank you for your help

I have the same problem under the same conditions the original poster described. However, under System Settings -> Multimedia -> Device Preference I don't have default as device listed. The devices I can pick are:
    -Esound (ESD)
    -HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog)
-HDA Intel, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Audio Output)
    -Jack Audio COnnection Kit.
I can also pick HDA Intel (NVIDIA HDMI) when I check  'Show advanced devices'
When I use Esound I have sound for a while, until after a random time it falls back to the underlying device, which makes sound disappear. When I use HDA Intel (STAC92xx Analog), it falls back immediately on logging in and the other choices do never fall back, but when I use them, I have no sound at all. After I loose sound when Esound falls back to another device, sometimes writing sudo /etc/rc.d/alsa restart gives sound back, but mostly I need to relog/restart the X-Server to get sound back.
Is my issue related to the original poster his problem? And how can I fix it?

Clone works with xrandr, as does extended mode to an extent.  The problem is that in extended mode (or spanning, or whatever you want to call it) the smaller screen has dead space which isn't respected by dwm (or any other WM I've tried).  So I'd like to setup dual X sessions (aka Zaphod mode?), each running their own instance of dwm--I don't need to move windows from screen to screen so that's not a concern.
Has anyone had luck accomplishing this with the current intel driver?  The closest I've gotten so far is a black screen/blinking cursor which drops back to a login prompt after a few seconds.   I see a ton of related topics on Google about this and most of them are unresolved.  If I can get something put together I'll document it in the dwm and/or intel wikis.
    Specs:
    * Acer Aspire One AOD150 with Intel GMA945 @ 1024x600
    * LCD @ 1280x1024

It's a work in progress, but for those who are interested I was able to get a dual-head setup (using xrandr and the Xinerama extensions) with the current Intel driver (not legacy) using the following:

Until I have a chance to write a fancier script I've added the following to ~/.xinitrc:
    xrandr --output LVDS1 --mode 1024x600
    xrandr --output VGA1 --below LVDS1 --mode 1280x1024
The first command ensures the netbook screen takes the proper resolution and the second enables the external LCD.  If I startx when the LCD is disconnected then the netbook screen is the only screen enabled (no dead space).
    Caveats
    1. With mplayer in fullscreen it appears as 1024x600 even when opened on the 1280x1024 screen.
    2. The external LCD cannot be placed left or right of the netbook screen because it would exceed the 2048 virtual resolution which segfaults X with the latest intel driver.  Virtual cannot be set higher than 2048 in either direction without segfaulting X; though I imagine this will be addressed in future versions of the intel driver.
    Many thanks to mzapotoczny!

  • Unable to record internal audio with RecordMyDesktop

In order to record sound and video from my desktop, I installed RecordMyDesktop (https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/RecordMyDesktop) and followed the instructions from post #4 and #6 on a thread about "Recording internal audio with alsa and recordmydesktop" (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php … 3#p1359593). When I try to record with "recordmydesktop --device looprec", it will not start recording and closes with the following error:

Adjusted recording window is set to:

If this information would be helpful, I use alsamixer and "aplay -l" gives the following:

I can record from the microphone with with the command "recordmydesktop". I succeeded in recording the internal audio with audacity by choosing the device "looprec" for recordings. I'm not sure why RecordMyDesktop gives an error while Audacity does not. Below is my ~/.asoundrc, which I copied from the aforementioned thread. I am not knowledgeable, but I guess there is a mistake in it? Would you please assist me solving this error? Thank you for your time.
