[SOLVED] Pacman incredibly slow, help!

Hi,
I just installed Arch Linux yesterday using the Beginners Guide. I'm stuck at the point where you go
pacman -Syy
I do have a network connection: I can ping www.google.com just fine, but trying to ping the mirrors returns
ping: unknown host (mirror URL)
My /etc/hosts shows
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost David
My /etc/rc.conf shows under the Networking Section
HOSTNAME = "David"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(eth0)
gateway="default gw 192.168.0.1"
ROUTES=(!gateway)
My /etc/pacman.conf shows
[core]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[extra]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[community]
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
My /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist shows only
Server = ftp://locke.suu.edu/linux/dist/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = ftp://mirrors.unixheads.org/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
Server = http://mirror.neotuli.net/arch/$repo/os/i686
uncommented with the other US mirrors commented out and the foreign mirrors deleted
Pacman does work... but at a snail's pace of sub-1.0K/s and takes hours to finish -Syy
Thanks in advance!

fwojciec wrote:Even my old-ish slow-ish laptop can resync repos in around 10 seconds, so there is definitely something wrong on your system.  My guess would actually be some network related problem, rather than hardware performance one.  In one of your earlier posts you wrote that you can't ping the mirror host -- this must be related, I'd say this is your best lead at the moment.
Yes, that's true... when I try to ping any mirror host I get an error
ping -c 3 http://mirrors.easynews.com/linux/archlinux/$repo/os/i686
error: unknown host http://mirrors.easynews.com/linux/archlinux//repo/os/i686
it returns the mirror URL but replaces $ with / ... have any of you guys run across something like that before?
I looked over my /etc/hosts and /etc/rc.conf (above) and they seem to be okay. I also switched my DNS server to OpenDNS like you suggested
/etc/resolv.conf
nameserver 208.67.222.222
nameserver 208.67.220.220
nameserver 192.168.0.1
Any ideas as to what could be wrong?
Thanks a bunch for your help you guys You guys are awesome!

  • [SOLVED] pacman very slow

    Hello,
    some days ago I noticed pacman being very slow when synchronizing its database.. I don't remember whether it became slow after upgrading arch, but I thinks so.
    First I thought it was not working at all, because when typing "pacman -Sy", it says ":: Synchronizing package databases..." as usual and nothing happens for like 10 minutes (!) Then I'm getting:
    core is up to date
    And it takes another 5 minutes for:
    extra 621.8K 1014.4K/s 00:00:01 [######################] 100%
    (same for community and multilib).
    As you can see the download goes fast (1 sec) but it takes ages for it to happen. Nevertheless I tried changing my mirror (usually using "Any") but of course it didn't help.
    Hope, someone can help.

    You most probably have kernel.org mirror activated in your mirrorlist file; changing it to any other location should help.
    Btw: just have seen this thread: https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=125802

  • I have uninstalled everything on my laptop, removed all my files to my external device and my laptop is still incredibly slow when opening any of the adobe applications, can anyone help please?

    I have downloaded the adobe student suite and whenever I open any of the adobe applications my laptop is incredibly slow, I cannot use any other application at the same time and often have to force quit. I have taken all my files off my laptop and added to my external hardrive. Can anyone help please?

    What about other non-Adobe programs on the machine - do they also run slowly?
    What are your system specifications?  How do they match up to the system requirements for the software?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman: slow sync with dlink dsl-2740b

    Hi guys,
    I've a very strange problem.
    My pacman very slow when sync database with this router: dlink dsl-2740b.
    That's not a pacman issue, but I hope you can tell me some option that I should modify into my router settings.
    I'm using pacman 3.5.1 and I can't upgrade it.
    I'm experiencing another issue: akregator slow fetch... only it, thunderbird fetch normally.
    I hope this could help.
    Obviously I've already tryed to change mirror in mirrorlist.

    I don't think this is a mirror problem, because using other connection, and other router I don't have this problem...

    Hello:
    My iMac has been dragging lately and I'm wondering what is the best way to correct the issue.  After searching the forums, I saw that running EtreCheck could assist in the experts' pinpointing issues.  I've done so and included the Summary below:

    When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
    These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
    Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
              SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
    from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
    Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
    Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
    Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
    The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
    Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
    Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Mac desktop running incredibly slow.

    Hi I have a 2010 Imac which is running incredibly slow!
    3.06 GHz processor, 4GB memory running OS X Yosemite
    I was hoping someone could please help me get to the bottom of what is wrong with it - i did wonder does it need a new hard drive? The original hard drive was replaced by Apple under warranty in summer 2013.
    It was running really slow and then last week I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.3 which seemed to give it a new lease of life. however yesterday there was a power cut and since I have restarted it it is taking forever to do the smallest task. It takes about a minute to open up mail and then you have to wait around 30 secs to see the messages, then wait even longer to click and write.
    Having looked up common faults I have tried looking at the utilities section but there is nothing showing a high percentage and I really don't know what else to do?
    I have done an Etrecheck as recommended by support and have attached it below:
    Can anyone advise why it is going so slow and what do all the red bits on the etre check results actually mean?
    Many Thanks
    Catriona

    If you haven't already done so, try this simple step first. Probably there will be no change. In that case, see below.
    When you post the log extract, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

  • Incredibly Slow with Spinning Ball

    In the last week my MacBook Pro has become incredibly slow. I have contacted Apple Support, done a safe start, verified the disk with no issues. Even typing into this box is met with constant pauses and freezes.
    Below is a check I did through EtreCheck. Can anyone tell me what the issue may be. This makes no sense to me.

  • Incredibly slow 9300, I've tried it all.

    Hey everyone!
    To start off:
    I'm on Koodo
    I have a 3g curve, 9300, and it's OS is 6.0 Bundle 2391
    Application storage: 189.6MB used  66.4 Free
    Pre batter pull:
    Memory use: 178.7 used 77.1 free under applications,
    Device status says 69103008 bytes free.
    After a battery pull:
    Memory use: 161.4  used 94.5 free
    Device status: 695473936
    I have all the standard apps that come with the Blackberry, no extras.
    I have a couple hundred MB of music on a 2gb card.
    Now for the problem.
    I've had my crackberry for about a month now, and I love it.  But in the past week it has become incredibly slow, sometimes sitting for 10 minutes at a time without me being able to do anything, and I've missed some phone calls too.  In fact, at my school's award ceremony, I had my friend store it in her purse, and when she brought it out, it was frozen with the clock displaying the time from when awards started.
    I'm incredibly frustrated. Here's what I've tried:
    Battery Pull
    Clear the log
    Memory cleaner
    Closing all apps possible
    Pull the media card
    Remove languages I don't use.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Also: My battery life has taken a dive in light of this freezing situation.  It usually lasts me from about 7:00am to arouns 9 or 10 at night, so a good 14 or 15 hours.  But now, it's barely making 6 hours, and that's mostly idle and in my pocket.
    Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Ok, so now go back to your Security settings, and turn it off.
    There's really no need for Memory Cleaner use for most users, it does not increase any memory amount and routinely only uses process time and causes the blasted processor busy clock.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

    I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
    Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
    As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
    I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
    I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
    Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
    I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.

  • My Macbook Pro is so slow-.HELP!

    Hello everyone,
    I have had my Macbook pro for about 4 years now and it is incredibly slow.  I believe it is because of the lack of space on the hard drive or something like that.  I am not very tech savvy but when I went to my local Apple store they said that my Macbook only has 2g of somekind of internal memory which is why it is running slow.  The guy I spoke with actually recommended buying more memory on Amazon and installing it myself or pay someone because if I did it at the Apple store it would run around $200 vs. Amazon would be around $40.  The processor that I have is a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.  Memory: 2GB 1067 MHz DDR3.  I am running version 10.7.5 software.  Also when digging further it says that I have a 160 GB SATA Disk and that out of all that space I only have 507.7 mb of storage left.  I would that this would obviously be my problem with the computer being so sluggish taking forever to have more that one app open at a time and so on.  Also what is shows is taking up all the memory is labeled under 'other' and has used 158.67GB.  Audio, Movies, Photos, Apps, and Backups all show 'Zero KB'.  I don't understand that though because I easily have 7000+ pictures on this Macbook.  Could they be under the 'Other'?
    Any help with the direction to take to make this Macbook Pro faster would be greatly appreciated.  Has anyone ever purchased additional memory or what I need on Amazon to save some money?  Or just tell me what I need lol.  Thank you to everyone who helps me out!
    Donovan
    ** Also I just received a message after posting this that the 'start up disc is full' on this Macbook Pro and I need to delete some files or something.  Any help here would be great as well.  Thank you everyone.

    Donovan,
    MacTracker is just an Apple database - but I was able to find your model by using it.
    Only you can determine if you've files that can be deleted. Everything inside your user folder (except the Library folder) is fair game to be tossed. I know you want to keep your iPhoto library, though! You could get an external drive and copy your iPhoto library to it and I'm sure that would free up some space. That may be your best, but temporary, fix. I would still recommend a larger internal drive and more RAM. Since you have a Firewire 800 port, you may want to look at OWC, again, for external drives with FW800 connections - that's the speediest port on your model.
    I trust OWC on any of their external drives - they're truly Mac experts. For RAM, I prefer Crucial, although OWC sells fine RAM as well.

  • My 8620 HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer IS INCREDIBLY SLOW TO PRINT - TRIED EVERYTHING

    I have an 8620 HP Officejet Pro 8620 e-All-in-One Printer It is connected via wireless set-up, with excellent signal strength. It is incredibly slow to print anything, especially PDF files that have graphics in them. I have the latest software installed, latest firmware updates. I have even uninstalled and re-installed, the issue is still there. This is an incredibly crap product, so I'd like to get this issue solved ASAP. Thanks,Brian

    For example: printing http://www.nytimes.com/images/2015/07/04/nytfrontpage/scan.pdf Quickly goes 7.03mb/of 7.03mb... then just swirls the "printing" status on the printer's LCD screen, and takes 5 minutes to print...

  • Incredibly slow MacBook, Internal Hard Drive issues...

    Good morning everybody! I'm apologize if this post is extremely wordy...
    I am extremely baffled by a particular issue with a MacBook 2.0GHz C2D which belongs to a friend of mine. The warranty is expired.
    _Brief history:_
    Several months ago, this MacBook could not find a bootable volume. The drive would not mount when booting from an external FireWire hard drive. It would not mount when the MacBook was put in Target Disk Mode and connected to another Mac. When booting from an external USB hard drive or with my MacBook Pro connected to the MacBook via Target Disk Mode, the MacBook booted up quickly. I came to the conclusion that the internal hard drive must have failed and needed to be replaced. Ultimately, the data was not recoverable from this drive.
    I then proceeded to swap out the defective Apple OEM Seagate hard drive with a known working Apple OEM Fujitsu hard drive. When booting from the Leopard Install DVD, the MacBook would boot incredibly slow, but would finally reach the Installer Language screen. When proceeding to install Leopard, the drive would take a very long time to have data written to it, and ultimately the install failed. I removed the new hard drive from the MacBook and placed it in an external USB enclosure, attached it to the MacBook and booted from the Leopard Install DVD. Leopard would install successfully. I removed the hard drive from the enclosure and reinstalled it the MacBook. When booting from the freshly installed OS, the MacBook would take a very long time to boot. The MacBook is extremely slow!!!
    I checked the Activity Monitor to ensure CPU & System Memory Usage was not going crazy. All Processes where normal with adequate CPU & Memory headroom.
    I took the MacBook apart thinking that the SATA Controller Cable might be loose. No, it was firmly in place. I reassembled the MacBook and booted it up again. Still incredibly slow!
    Finally, after several reboot attempts, the MacBook would book up quickly and operation was perfect. I applied all updates and continued testing the MacBook with great success. Gave my friend his MacBook back and he was grateful.
    _Now for the kicker..._
    My friend brought me his MacBook a week ago complaining that the MacBook was operating extremely slow (much like when I was initially testing it before). I verified the MacBook was slow when I tried using it. I tried several reboots and then it would get stuck on the gray Apple with spinning gear.
    I tried booting into Single User Mode, but it gets stuck on "Waiting for root device"
    I put the MacBook in Target Disk Mode and connected it to my G5 2.0GHz Dual Core. The hard drive would mount quickly on the G5 and I used Disk Utility to create a Restore Image. The disk operation would perform normally and the image would be created successfully.
    I then partitioned the MacBook's hard drive when connected to the G5, ejected and proceeded to attempt OS reinstall. No dice! The hard drive is not even detected by the Disk Utility on the Leopard Install DVD.
    Finally after several reattempts, the hard drive is recognized, but is extremely slow when trying to reinstall...and again, ultimately install fails. Using Disk Utility from Leopard Install DVD, the hard drive fails to unmount when I try formatting.
    I don't have Apple Hardware Test disc for the MacBook or Apple Service Diagnostics disc for this model. Running TechTool Pro shows hardware to be okay, disk controller onboard the Fujitsu drive is okay, but running SMART & Surface Scan takes a long, long time (which I'm certain will ultimately error out). Running Drive Genius takes a long, long time as well.
    Conclusion:
    I think the SATA Controller Cable is defective. I can't think of anything else that would cause disk errors or performance issues like this. Your input is truly appreciated!

    Even though no one responded to my post, I thought I'd share the resolution with the entire Apple community. I hope this information will be helpful to some of you with MacBooks or MacBook Pros that may be running painfully slow or may be exhibiting hard drive issues because your machine won't recognize the boot drive or fails to properly boot on a perfectly healthy S.M.A.R.T. verified hard drive. It just might be the hard drive connector/cable. Here it goes...
    I visited my local Apple Retail Store and asked a "Genius" at the Genius Bar about this issue and told him my thoughts about a possible failed hard drive connector/cable. First, he didn't even know what a hard drive connector was! Then, he arrogantly stated that he never heard of such a thing and that these cables never fail. Finally, he blatantly dispelled this as a possibility.
    On the contrary with my experience, I have had many failed PATA controller cables that required replacement when supporting the desktop PC's at work. I have personally owned and supported many Apple manufactured laptops and desktops and have never encountered this issue on a Mac...until this MacBook!
    So, after looking at the Service Manual for the MacBook, I went over to my local Apple Authorized Service Provider and purchased the Hard Drive Connector Apple Part #922-7579. I replaced the original cable, reassembled and proceeded to boot the MacBook with the Leopard DVD installer. The Fujitsu drive was immediately recognized and was able to be formatted and Leopard installed without incident. The MacBook boots off the internal hard drive as normal again and works nice and fast again.
    Thank you all for your time!
    :D

  • My computer is INCREDIBLY slow after Yosemite install

    I recently installed the latest operating system Yosemite for my Apple Mac Pro and ever since it has been installed, my computer has been INCREDIBLY slow!  Everything from starting up to applications opening to the **** internet!  I'm ready to punch my fist into my **** monitor, even though I know it's not my monitor's fault.  lol.  Macworld has published an article (http://www.macworld.com/article/2837811/bugs-and-fixes-solving-a-yosemite-post-i nstall-disaster.html) about this along with the problem they think is causing it but I checked and the file in question doesn't exist on my computer.  I don't want to go through the last step that is mentioned which involves downloading Yosemite onto an external hard drive and then installing from there.  That step would also involve manually searching for files that might be causing the issue.
    So, has anyone else experienced their computers running REAL slow after the update and did you figure out a simple solution?

  • Importing photos from my iPhone is incredibly slow or not working anymore

    After upgrading from iPhoto to Photos, I can't import photos from my iPhone anymore after connecting it to my 5K iMac.
    When I do connect my iPhone to my iMac, it takes over a minute or two for just the "Import" button to appear next to the global Photos/Shared/Albums/Projects navigation.
    The next problem is that my thumbnails are loading incredibly slow, with just the thumbnail placeholder graphics appearing at a glacial pace without the actual thumb of the photo in question.
    These issues are terribly annoying and killing the excitement of the long overdue and great upgrade.
    Many thanks in advance to whoever can help me resolve these issues.
    SavJag

    Ok, this is incredible, but within 5 minutes of posting this problem, and after 6 to 8 views (hopefully by Apple Tech Support), these issues seem to be fixed.
    I just tried Photos again (my iPhone was already connected to my iMac) and boom, the Import button was already there in the global nav.
    The thumbnail gallery of my already imported and new items showed up immediately.
    When I hit "Import", my new items started importing immediately and turning up under the Photos section.
    Apple Support Community / Tech Support, a big thank you to whoever fixed this. Hugely appreciated.

  • Incredibly slow internet (Connected through airport)

    Hey there!
    I just got myself a new Macbook around 2 months ago and so far I'm very happy with it. I haven't had any problems except for one.
    I'm connected to the internet wireless through Airport and since about a week ago loading web pages is going incredibly slow, whether I use Safari or Firefox. I didn't have this problem before and I didn't change any internet settings. Nothing else changed eigher. I'm still connected to the same network and I didn't install any dodgy programs on my network. Downloading or loading videos doesn't seem to be a problem though. When downloading from a fast server like mac or windows (I know I shouldn't but hey, all my friends use msn ;)) I can easily make the 300 kb/sec. Also waching video's on apple.com/trailers isn't a problem. It's only the loading of web pages or sending e-mails. It sometimes takes up to half a minute to even load google.com. I'm not sure but it might have started after a software update. not at all sure though! Can anybody help me please! Thanks!

    Hi Jop, and Welcome to the discussions!
    Two things to try first...
    Fix Permissions using the Disk Utility, then reboot. or better yet, get Applejack...
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/19596
    After installing, reboot holding down CMD+s, then when the prompt shows, type in...
    applejack AUTO
    Then let it do all 5 of it's things.
    At least it'll eliminate some questions if it doesn't fix it.
    The 5 things it does are...
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
    Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Try putting these in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers:
    4.2.2.1
    4.2.2.2
    Might be better ones for you over there, but worth a try.
