[SOLVED] Quadruple X screen!

Hi,
I have just installed Xorg, following carefully the instructions in the Beginner's Guide. I start it up as described with startx and see a few xterms and the clock - everything as it should be AFAIK. I then switch to virtual terminal 2 with Ctrl-Alt-2 to check something in the text environment. Switch back to the graphical environment with Alt-F7 and can't believe my eyes when I see the screen below. Four copies of one of the xterms (not 4 separate xterms - witness the black cursor - this is the active xterm, anything typed now appears in all four).
I have already done a lot of reading and searching and this is the third time of installation.
I would be very grateful for the slightest hint or clue of what direction to look in for a solution because I've run out of ideas for the time being.
I've put a listing of the Xorg.0.log in the pastebin at  http://paste.pocoo.org/show/569479/
I'd be glad to provide any other input needed.
Of course this is not really a critical error as I can use and am using my new Arch system for a variety of activities. I have also recently joined the local Linux club and am unfortunately experiencing quite a bit of anti-Arch feeling - "far too difficult" (especially for you as a beginner)  and so on - and unfortunately they have seen this quadruple screen business

A step in the right direction!
I discovered that PCLinuxOS works on this old laptop and does not cause the problem mentioned above.
It uses /etc/X11/xorg.conf, which Arch doesn't. So I decided to copy that file over to the Arch system.
When I pressed the fatal keys everything worked fine! Until I tried it a second time and then it was back
to seeing four of everything...
This is what happens with the current setup... It works one time, then no more. Here's the xorg.conf I borrowed from PCLinuxOS:
# File generated by XFdrake (rev 262502)
# Refer to the xorg.conf man page for details about the format of

  • [SOLVED] Compositing causes screen to freeze in KDE 4.7 with Nouveau

    Hello,
since the upgrade to KDE 4.7 screen gets [partial] freezes for several seconds (differs) especialy when some repainting is to be done (scrolling in Rekonq/KWrite, opening and closing tabs in Rekonq, playing video in KDE). Usually I can stil see moving the mouse, though the cursor doesn't change on links etc. Also repainting of plasma widgets freezes.
I'm using nouvea driver for 7600 GS video card:
    multilib/lib32-nouveau-dri 7.11-1
    extra/nouveau-dri 7.11-1
    extra/nouveau-firmware 20091212-4
    extra/xf86-video-nouveau 0.0.16_git20110726-1
And get foloving in dmesg after a freeze:
[43244.176746] [drm] nouveau 0000:04:00.0: vm flush timeout: 0x00000022
    and in xorg.log:
[ 43235.667] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
Everything is ok with disabled compositing, or with nvidia driver, thogh I do not prefer to use it since it lacks KMS and is proprietary.
Any idea which splendid new feature of KDE 4.7 causes this? And how to turn it off so I can use compositing again? I tried diasbling new GL 2.0 shaders and setting worser filter in advanced Plasma settings but it didn't help.
I'll happily provide more info, if I am pointed which one.
    Thank you.

3-D is currently an unsupported use-at-your-own-risk feature in nouveau. That leads me to conclude that neither project (kwin or nouveau) can be blamed at the moment.
I had irrecoverable freezes (had to ssh in and reboot) on my 9800 GT while playing videos fullscreen. Turning off the option to disable 3-D for full screen applications solved that problem for me. Compared to that, I'm okay with the temporary one-second freezes (which I see as well).
Your best bet is to play around and isolate which effects cause the issues for you. Start with no desktop effects checked and work your way up, adding one effect at a time. Maybe you'll discover the culprit that way. Hope that helps.

  • [SOLVED][KDE, intel] Screen goes gray when switching windows

    Hello,
on my EEE netbook, since the xorg update, I guess --noticed today, as I use it for school only --, the screen goes gray after I switch windows via alt+tab. This does not happen every time, but eventually it occures. In that case the whole screen has color of not yet painted window, and the DE is seemingly not responding to anything, I can still move my mose though and cursor moves too. Switching to text console works, but xserver restart is needed to get things back to normal.
I have been using graphics system raster, but change to default didn't solved the issue. The same goes for -lcd font filters. System is up-to-date and uses some SELinux packages from the AUR if that matters, but it should not, as they are not graphics nor DE related.
Would you have any sugestions? I should not be doing any potentially risky operations till thursday, as I need the computer for school and don't have any other available.
    Thank you.
Will happily provide additional information, if you specify it.
EDIT: The situation is simmilar as when I run a program, first a fullscreen window is painted gray, and when everything is loaded its content is painted. This lasts few second in case of big applications like Kontact. In the case of mentioned bug it is like the content of window never painted.
EDIT: So I recompiled bespin-svn, as I remembered, that this package likes to cause trobles, when it is older, and I wanted to mark this solved, as it behaved during the day, but just few minutes ago, the problem happend again.
EDIT: I don't understand it. On monday it happed several times during day. On tuesday it happend once. Since wednesday it didn't happend. Sould I start to beleave in ghosts?
    Last edited by Nicky726 (2010-12-09 16:02:37)

Ok, happend again several times today. Didn't happen at any other PC, but I do not have other Intel based, in case it is graphics related.
As for log (not like I have an idea what to look for) I have error loading fbdev module and some touchpad errors in xorg.log (not imediatelly after the problem), and some Networkmanager warnings.
Damn. Now I failed three times in a row to switch from konsole to rekonq in order to copy those logs. Anyway this is tail -n 50 everything.log (right now X11 screen is just gray and mouse cursor). SELinux can be ignored as it is set permissive.

  • Downgrading to 7.0.1 did not solve the white screen issue.

    Hello -
A little background - in early January, with a thesis presentation due, I delayed upgrading to Quicktime 7.0.4 until after the thesis - this was a good idea, because now after upgrading and downgrading again, I've got problems.
I made a video with Final Cut Pro - (assume I can no longer go back and output it again) and have the file as a .mov. Before upgrading, thesis era, I threw it into iDVD and got a DVD.
NOW I need to make more copies of the DVD so I go about re-creating the dvd in iDVD with the exact same files... and the video comes up blank. both in quicktime AND in iDVD.
I downgraded from 7.0.4 to 7.0.1 - but that did not solve the problem completely... sure, I get my audio back now, but the film is entirely white-screen...
I'm under a massive time deadline to make more copies of the DVD and I'm at a loss os what to do! Please help!!
I'm already deleted the receipts, downgraded from 7.0.4 -> 7.0.1... no fix.
tried going back to 7.0.3 from 7.0.1... no fix.
went BACK to 7.0.1 again.... no fix...
    HELP!!!! t
    thanks

  • [SOLVED] Agh my screen is melting!

Alright, so i've had linux running on my Sony VGN-S460 laptop for about 8 months now, gone from ubuntu to arch and settled here.
Now since the very beginning (ubuntu) every time I have rebooted, shutdown or changed the terminal window (with alt+F* buttons) my screen blanks then literally looks like it melting.
I cant see any sort of output while its doing this, and as far as I know everyhting else is running cleanly - I havent had any problems or anything, suspend to RAM and Disk work fine, it seems harmless (my screen hasnt degraded either) and honestly it looks pretty damn cool.
now the problem is I want to use the other virtual terminals, and see my shutdown logs (if there are any.... I still dont know)
the only idea I have is that the video drivers are for whatever reason cutting the power to my monitor... google hasnt helped me and I've been trying to figure out what is going on since day 1
anyone had this problem and fixed it, any ideas?

I had this issue, and solved it.

  • [SOLVED] freeze (black screen) during boot

When booting, after I can choose between Arch and Arch Fallback, the console messages are still huge (resolution not yet fit to screen). That's the output of scripts run on boot, if I understand it right. Then, the screen turns black for a second when the screen resolution is increased, and then the colored stuff comes, e.g. the Daemons (network etc.).
Now sometimes, the screen just remains black when the screen resolution is increased. Nothing happens anymore, then, and I have to force reboot holding the power button. Most times, booting works on second try, sometimes it needs more tries (but eventually, it always boots just fine).
I'm running up-to-date Arch on a MacBook4 dualboot (rEFIt boots first, and from there, Arch is loaded by Grub). That's all system information I can provide right know, since I don't know much about what happens at boot, and there doesn't seem to be a boot logfile on Arch.
It's not a really fatal problem because, as mentionned, Arch eventually boots just fine every time after some tries; but it's really, really annoying because otherwise, my Arch runs rock stable (all crashes are window manager, i.e. gnome3, related...).
Last edited by cryptkeeper (2012-06-12 14:38:10)

I finally solved the problem, as it seems for good because I haven't had a single freeze on boot anymore since I did this.
What I did is to set up an "early KMS start", described here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … _KMS_start . I stumbled into this when I was googling for a solution, thought: why not give it a try?, and it works!!

  • [SOLVED] GNOME login screen freezes after 3 seconds

    Hello,
today I installed Arch-Linux the first time. I had some issues during the installation (following https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … Einsteiger (its the german version, seems to differ a little from the english version)), but everything went good until I installed GNOME. Now the login screen freezes everytime after quite exactly 3 seconds, unless I press [strg]+[alt]+[f2] fast enough to switch in tty2. Then the screen will only freeze when I switch back to tty1. Once the screen is frozen, I can't switch to tty2 anymore.
I think the problem has something to do with my nvidia hybrid graphic system. During the installation I installed the packages bumblebee, bbswitch and primus, but uninstalled them because I thought they could be the problem. But although I uninstalled the packages, the "Stamina-Mode" status led is turned on after the system has started and the "Speed-Mode" status led not. I think that's a little bit strange, because I can't imagine which process is controlling these leds.
    So I ran just
    pacman -S xorg-drivers
and I had to create the xinitrc-file (because I could not find this file in /etc/skel). Now the default GUI appeared after I ran
    startx
(I saw some windows and a clock). After that I installed gnome, changed the xinitrc-file in my userhome and got the freeze after a reboot.
I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem, but I get the following error-messages everytime I boot:
[drm:ibx_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
[drm:ilk_display_irq_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun
interl ips 0000:00:1f.6: thermal reporting for required devices not enabled, aborting
    Hoeman
P.S.: Because I'm a total beginner at linux I probably missed the most important informations, but I can give you more if you tell me how

Ok, I could solve the problem myself by installing the latest nvidia driver. Now I guess the intel grahic card is not used anymore, but I don't really know...

  • How to solve th eblue screen on my macbook? it's happen when i'm browsing with my macbook.

my macbook screen change to blue screen when i'm browsing. why it can happened? and how to solve that problem?
    thanks

You need to buy Mac OS X 10.7 or 10.8 from the Mac App Store. If your computer doesn't meet the system requirements for Mac OS X 10.8 and has a Core 2 Duo or better CPU, phone the online Apple Store and order a download code for Mac OS X 10.7.

  • Has anybody solved the blue screen?

I have been slaving over my iBook G4 since 8pm PST last night when I performed the update that screwed up my machine. I have spent my day doing this and that and still get blue screen. Has anybody solved the puzzle on what to do to get operating again?

Hi, I had the "Safari & security update problem". It wouldn´t start no matter I repaired permissions with Disk Utility. So I reinstalled the OSX (10.4.11) That let me keep my files, bookmarks and stuff, but my printer settings were lost. If I replace the actual printer settings with the ones that still are on the "previous systems) folder will it cause me problems again? Hope you can tell, Thanks.

  • SOLVED - Qosmio Black Screen (Nvidia Driver Problem)

I have a Qosmio X505-860 with the NVidia 360M display adapter. I experienced the occasional "Display Adapter has stopped responding and recovered" screen flicker as well as the adapter turning off upon log off, switch user, close lid (even with sleep disabled) etc.
I installed the ancient drivers provided by Toshiba and lo and behold, no problems -- except games look like crap.
Through trial and error I discovered that straight NVidia drivers work up to Verde 260.99, the last of that generation of drivers. As soon as the driver is updated to the next gen, starting with 266.58, the problems reoccur.
Through a long process of plodding through log files, tracing processes and scanning dlls with disassembly software, which I will not discuss here for copyright reasons, I linked the crashing to the NVidia Control Panel App rather than the actual driver. I am not entirely sure on this as I was hurrying through things and employing a lot of guess-and-check. I know for the 266.58 driver, renaming System32/nvapi64.dll solves the problem, though doing so will also make your system wonky...
Anyway, what eventually solved it for me, I believe, was uninstalling the (266.58) driver via the Control Panel. The computer went into No-Driver-640x480 mode, rebooted, and came back up. I could only see about an eighth of my desktop, but that didn't last long as Windows prompted me to reboot again for "changes to take place." After the second reboot, the NVidia Control Panel worked and showed version 301.42 (latest at the time of writing), even though the driver was absent from the list of Programs and Features. So far I have been able to Switch User and Log Off and back on without any trouble. I haven't tested it much, but this problem was 100% reproducible before.
I hope this helps somebody. If it doesn't work, let me know, I will try harder to figure out what exactly in my afternoon of registry editing and file scrambling did the trick.

That's great troubleshooting! Thanks for sharing your findings.

  • Help solving the Black Screen of Death

    Hello There!
I have an HP Touchsmart 610-1100z 3 days ago I put it to sleep and when I tried to wake it up nothing happened.  I restarted it and it was just a black screen, no HP logo ect, but I could hear all the fans and drives working.  I checked the light issue with a desk lamp and revealed that is not the problem.  I then tied the BIOS F10 to F5 work around with no luck.  I have gotten it to boot up twice since then by repeatedly turning it off and on until by sheer luck it just boots up.  When it boots up there is absolutely no issue but clearly something is eskew that I would like to fix so that I don't live in fear of turning off my computer.  Does anyone have any ideas?

  • [Solved] xorg "no screens found" on laptop with nvidia + intel Optimus

Startx gives fatal server error:(EE) no screens found
After installing arch on my laptop, I followed the xorg arch wiki to install the Xwindow system.
    I installed  xorg-server, startx
lspci -k | grep -A -2 -i "VGA" shows two graphic cards (see below). I guess the I am using the NVIDIA.
    I installed nvidia-utils-337.12-1 , nvidia-337.12-1, nvidia-libgl-337.12-1
    After that I ran nvidia-xconfig
    startx gives the above error.
    What can I try next?

    Hi Karol,
Thank you for the suggestion. I read the wiki Nvidia#No_screens_found_on_a_laptop.2FNVIDIA_Optimus .
It says "On a laptop, if the NVIDIA driver cannot find any screens, you may have an NVIDIA Optimus setup : an Intel chipset connected to the screen and the video outputs, and a NVIDIA". This seems to be the case for my latop.
The wiki suggests three options to get around the problem:
    1) NVIDIA drivers now offer Optimus support since 319.12 Beta [[3]] with kernels above and including 3.9.
    2) Another solution is to install the Intel driver to handle the screens
    3) Enter the BIOS and changed the default graphics setting from 'Optimus' to 'Discrete' and the install NVIDIA drivers
    I tried them all:
    1) I had NVIDIA driver version 337 installed, but I don't know how to turn on Optimus support
    3) I check my bios settings, but there is no such option
    2) I removed the nvidia drivers and then installed intel drivers. I removed /etc/x11/xorg.conf
startx now find screens. I guess there is no 2d or 3d acceleration, but it works
    Thank you

  • [SOLVED] Gateway LT3103u Screen Glitch Fix no longer working

I have the exact same problem as this person
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=99742
I followed the one fix that was posted.
I added radeon.new_pll=0 to my kernel boot line in grub.cfg and added
    options radeon new_pll=0
    in /etc/modprobe.d/radeon.conf
However when I boot I get an error which says radeon: Unknown parameter 'new_pll=0' and then X wont start, any idea why this might be happening? i've been trying to solve this problem for quite some time.

i have this laptop. mine works with the EXAPixmaps off flag in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-radeon.conf described ->
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/AT … logging_in
I also got this to work in debian/ubuntu based distros installing "fglrx-driver" which makes 0 sense because fglrx doesn't support R600 cards.

x11vnc is probably a better choice since it can show you the currently running sessions; tigervnc is different in that it is its own virtual session.  See the wiki page posted.
