[SOLVED] Seriously, Arch? Recovery shell, USB boot won't work

So I made the mistake of updating my system without painstakingly checking the news/updates and possible error logs. I rebooted my computer this morning and:
Decompressing Linux...Parsing ELF...done.
Booting the kernel.
:: Running Hook [resume]
ERROR: Unable to find root device '/dev/sda3'.
You are being dropped to a recovery shell
Type 'exit' to try and continue booting
sh: can't access tty; job control turned off
[rootfs /]#
This appears to be a pretty widespread problem today, as I've googled and searched the forums extensively and everyone is complaining about some udev to mkinitcpio movement or something.
I know what I need to do: either copy my files off my hard drive and reinstall, or chroot and downgrade my kernel, or chroot and reinstall udev, something like that.
Cool, so I need a liveCD. Unfortunately, my laptop lacks a CD drive (lenovo tablet). So I set out to make a USB bootable drive.
I tried it from Windows: my laptop didn't detect anything and kept kicking me back to the recovery shell. (Tried PartedMagic, Ubuntu, and Arch.)
I tried it from my school's Linux computers: Can't do *anything* without root. I tried sudo and for the first time in my life, the incident was reported and I got an email telling me not to try sudo again. Sweet.
I just tried it from my friend's Mac (the Arch x64 iso via Unetbootin): Now I get a blinking cursor when I boot from the USB.
What would you do? I'm at my wit's end here, and after using Archlinux for two years, this is giving me a MAJORLY bad taste in my mouth for the distro.

I can only change parameters from the grub menu, as far as I can tell, and I tried (hd0,{0,1,2,3,4}) and none of them worked. Only (hd0,0) gets me even as far as the recovery shell.

I'm using Unetbootin, which offers Core, Core_x64, Netinstall, and Netinstall_x64. Because I intend to chroot an x64 system, I tried core_x64.

I booted from the usb stick on one of my school's RHEL computers, and it says "no operating system detected". I'm...so...sad...why didn't unetbootin work...going to try to burn ubuntu again.

  • USB Headset won't work along with Audi

    First off, when searching for this problem, I saw many posts explaining why USB headsets won't work with a soundcard cause they basically have one built in to them. I understand this.
    This is not my problem.
    This is my problem:
    I have a Plantronics Gamecom Pro USB headset that worked great when I was using onboard sound. It would automatically intercept the first sound signal it could pick up. So if I plugged it in first, before starting a game, the headset would pick up all sound from the game.. nothing to my external speakers.
    If I started the game first with the headset unplugged, then plugged them in then started Ventrillo, then the headset would pick up the Ventrilo sound but the game sound still came from my speakers. Perfect set-up.
    However, after adding an Audigy 4, the headset no longer works at all. No sound, no mic.. I plugged the headset ito my laptop and it works fine so I am pretty sure it's some sort of conflict with the Audigy 4.
    I'm not too much of a techy but I'm thinking perhaps the Audigy 4 keeps a lock on the sound signal somehow, not letting the headset pick it up on the USb port?

    I have the same usb headset and am having the same issue with my pc. I am running the X-fi Platinum. The plantronics are supposed to be a plug and play, but when i plug it in, the headset is getting power, is recognized by the pc and other applications, but will not play any sounds at all, and it works on my other machine with an older card. It seems to be overridden by the new card. when i was running the old audigy i could use one or the other (not both at the same time) which is to be expected with this type of headset, but i did not expect the new card to totally not allow the head set to work at all. This is causing me trouble as i use my rig for alot of gaming and LAN parties. Speakers are often not allowed, and the plantronics gamecom pro headset is a sweet set for gaming. If anyone sees this and can provide a fix. I would greatly appreciate it.

  • USB Boot does not work on factory fresh device

    SO we're working on adopting the surface pro 3 for our organization. I've just run into an issue. We're currently bootstrapping the SCCM OSD process off of USB thumbdrives, we have are working on upgrading to a supported PXE platform, but for now we have
    to use the thumbdrives. The issue is, on a fresh, out-of-the-box Surface Pro 3, the Power-button + Volume Down will NOT boot of of USB. The only thing that works is to keep booting in the factory sysprep until it finally asks to take you to advanced recovery
    options where you can then select the USB device and it works fine from there. After the device has been imaged, the volume down + power trick works every time, just not when straight out of the box. This is obviously an issue fore the guys doing the imaging
    as it slows them down considerably. Any ideas why this is happening?

    That sounds rough...  I have new surface pro 3 devices and haven't encountered this problem.  If I had to speculate, I would say you have a firmware issue. 
    Try this to confirm.  Let the device boot up into the out of box image, and then let windows update patch the thing to completion and try again.  Not all that comforting if indeed you have this problem... did you purchase them a few months ago
    and are just now firing them up?  Maybe the ones we have here have a later firmware.

    I notice the specs say this mouse works with windows(no mention of Mac) yet the guy where I bought it assured me it would work fine with a Mac. The keyboard/mouse preferences shows a muouse but there is no movement or response from mouse. I would assume it was not reading it if not from appearance of "mouse" preference. I also have intalled UBBoverdrive in hopes that that might help but device/mouse menue does not appear to support mouse.
    Is there a way to get this to work or should I just return it to the vendor?
    Can anyone suggest a good CHEAP 3n button mouse for Mac?

    The name of that mouse is deceiving. It is not a USB mouse it is a wireless mouse. Unfortunately without the proper OS X drivers for the USB/wireless adapter you won't be able to get that thing to work.
    If you are looking for an inexpensive USB mouse, checkout the Kensington Mouse in a Box Optical.
    Does your iBook have Bluetooth? If so take a look at the Kensington PilotMouse Mini Bluetooth Mouse. I have one of these and it works great.

    The pre-1998 Macs this forum covers do not have USB and few can be retrofitted to have it, so I believe you have a newer Mac that has its own more-active forum section. Can you give us more details about your model? People will need to know your model and Mac OS software version to answer anyway.

  • HD deleted, USB Boot-Stick not working

    At first I had Snow Leopard 10.6.8.
    I prepared a USB Boot-Stick for OS X Yosemite by following the instructions on a website.
    I deleted my Harddrive and then tried to install Yosemite from the USB-Stick.
    Unfortunately it gives me this error message (I'm german so my translation might not be fully correct):
    -     OS X could not be installed on your Computer.
          The process could not be finished. Undefined error: 0
          Close the installation program to restart your Computer and try again.
    So now I don't know what to do as I don't have a Snow Leopard Installation CD.
    I have a Time Machine backup if that's of any help.
    Please help me fix this.

    Since you no longer have a Snow Leopard DVD, restore your entire system by following these instructions:
    OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version
    Then, install Yosemite from the App Store.
    The instructions you found on a website are probably wrong. If you want to retain the Yosemite installer program for future use, copy the downloaded "Install OS X Yosemite" file prior to the installation. You may then use it to install Yosemite on as many Macs as you wish.

  • Apple USB Superdrive won't work

    I just bought an Apple USB Superdrive. I works fine with a macbook air but if I plug it in to a 15" Macbook Pro either a Core 2 Duo or an Early 2008 model it won't work. The optical disc is not admitted when I try to insert it.

    Ridiculous! I suppose it's all part of the business stategy to force you to upgrade even though the kit you have is still doing everything you want of it.
    But I wonder is there a way of doing something in 'Terminal' mode to get other macs to accept the superdrive?

    My USB stick is a HighSpeed 17-20 MBPS and it's 16 GB capacity.
    So how do I do it?

    I'm using occasionally Arch installed on HDD-USB, I've just added usb hook to mkinitcpio.conf and removed autodetect (more modules=more hardware supported). So far it worked on 3 different computers (all of them have one main HDD so no grub issues, but it's no biggie if it doesn't boot right away, you can always edit grub on-the-fly by pressing "e")
    About USB stick: installing on USB stick is not the same as running it in LIVE mode! Consider yourself warned.
    If you just install it you really should read about SSD optimizations because USB flash cells also have limited read/write cycles (actually is less robust and sophisticated than SSD). Something to look at: noatime mount option, disable swap if not necessary, profile-sync-daemon and so on...

    So I have this new laptop (HP Pavilion DM4-1050ca)
    Everything is working perfectly except everytime I boot my laptop, when Arch boots, before I get to my desktop, all of sudden I can't see anything and I have to raise the brightness of my laptop manually with function keys. Can someone please help me out. Thanks in advance

    On this DV4, I have a file in the proc directory as follows:
    [root@odin applications]# cat /proc/acpi/video/OVGA/DD03/brightness

    [root@odin applications]# echo 50 > /proc/acpi/video/OVGA/DD03/brightness
    [root@odin applications]# cat /proc/acpi/video/OVGA/DD03/brightness
    levels: 0 10 20 30 40 50 60 70 80 90 100
    current: 50
    Note that I have 5 possible displays DD01 - DD05 (VGA, S-Video, LVDS, HDMI, and I don't know)  The only one that supports brightness is the LVDS, which is the internal LVDS LCD panel.
    Find the correct file in proc to which you can write a brightness value and actually change the brightness.
    Add a command like echo 50 > /proc/acpi/video/OVGA/DD03/brightness (modified as appropriate for your system) and add it to /etc/rc.local.  Hopefully, nothing turns down the brightness after that file runs.  If so, find what does it, or find a script that runs later in the startup process.

  • Old USB cords won't work, or new

    My kids and I each have an iPod Classic, so of course we each have an iPod USB cord. When we connect any of them to the computer they will not charge or acknowledge who's (i.e. Kim's ipod) iPod it is. I have also bought two new cables and they do not work. I can my camera USB cord in the same port for and have no problem uploading pictures. Why will the cords not work? HELP!!!!

    i think the best thing to do is to take your ipods and cables into the apple store genius bar http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/. they will try it out and maybe the experts will be able to solve your problem. I think its probably your computer as its unlikely that a new cable won't fail at the same time an old one does. I would say it was the ipods but its very unlikely that more than one ipod would fail at the same time.
    Good luck maybe theres someone out there who can help online, but its hard to try and solve your problem without seeing your ipod cable computer etc.

    I'm trying to perform a full recovery on an HP 2000 Notebook. When I got the notebook, I put the recovery info on a usb stick.  When I tried to use it ,it said it wasn't on there. When I loaded the stick it said it had done it, and to click finish. And, I already removed the info from the drive like they suggested, to save space. What now?

  • USB ports won't work

    Hi, I recently bought a Probook 4441s-445TX. I installed Windows 7 Professional 64 bit on it but I couldn't get my 2 USB ports on the right side of my laptop to work. I looked into this and it seems like HP Probooks series have similar issue as well. The USB ports on the right (USB 2.0) don't work at all, they won't recognize any devices nor they can recharge any devices via USB cable. 
    Any suggestion? Am I missing a driver here (I checked Device Manager and it says I miss one driver but it's unknown device with Hardware ID "ACPI/HPQ6000" which I still couldn't find the driver for it, btw, but I don't think it has anything to do with the USB ports.

  • [Solved] Nero 3.5.2.3-1 won't work with udev 174-1

    Recent udev update causes Nero 3.5.2.3-1 to find no CD/DVD devices.
    My user is a member of the 'disk' group and I've tried tinkering with the udev rules suggested in other threads, to no avail.
    Doesn't seem like a permissions problem as root can't detect any drives either.
    But here's what the Nero manual says:
    SCSI recording devices are handled by two different drivers under Linux, and so two differ-
    ent device files are created to handle one physical device:
    /dev/srX or /dev/scdX : Used only to read data from media
    /dev/sgX : Used by Nero Linux to communicate with the device
    So it looks as though Nero needs /dev/sgX to be defined, but these devices are not created after booting Arch.
    Any ideas, anyone?
    PS: xfburn seems to work okay for me
