[solved] systemd refuses to let go of old interface name

I'm installing a fresh system, trying to do everything the "new" way but systemd isn't making it easy for me to like it.
One thing I refuse to use is "persistent" network naming; so I created the symlink to /dev/null in /etc/udev/rules.d/80-net-name-slot.rules
That's all fine, the interface is now eth0 as it should be. I updated my netctl config to use eth0 as the interface, but systemd refuses to let go:
After issuing 'netctl start natures-adm', I get this error:
May 01 11:59:20 apoc.example.com systemd[1]: Job sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp9s0.device/start timed out.
May 01 11:59:20 apoc.example.com systemd[1]: Timed out waiting for device sys-subsystem-net-devices-enp9s0.device.
May 01 11:59:20 apoc.example.com systemd[1]: Dependency failed for A basic dhcp ethernet connection.
According to the error, systemd is being too smart for it's own good and waiting for the old enp9s0 interface, which never comes because it's now eth0 (which is ready and waiting).
[root@apoc ~]# cat /etc/netctl/natures-adm
Description='A basic dhcp ethernet connection'
Interface=eth0
Connection=ethernet
IP=dhcp
## for DHCPv6
IP6=dhcp
## for IPv6 autoconfiguration
#IP6=stateless
So how do I tell systemd to do what netctl is expecting instead of second guessing everything?
===EDIT===
It appears systemd is "holding on" due to this file: /etc/systemd/system/netctl\@natures\\x2dadm.service
Is this "normal"?

This was a service file corresponding to your old natures-adm profile mentioning enp9s0? Then either you forgot to update a service file you created, or netctl generated it (so you were not aware it was created) without cleaning it up. You should blame yourself or netctl (which is still in beta), respectively.
sullivanva linked your problem to encoded hyphens, without really explaining the connection. It seems unlikely that this really is the cause. Or a part of netctl responsible for generating service files fails to take this encoding into account, but I think netctl users are also expected to understand the correspondence between service files and profiles and be able manage them.

  • ITunes refuses to let me drag tracks in or out of or within playlists

    With no pattern, just nasty surprises, iTunes refuses to let me drag tracks in or out of or within playlists.
    I have searched the Apple Support Communities and elsewhere and found no solutions which work.
    It's nothing to do with Wacom - I don't have one. It's nothing to do with setting iTunes to manual sorting. It's not set to shuffle or repeat. It's just an ordinary playlist. It's not a folder nor a Smart playlist.
    On one occasion I phoned Apple and a nice man told me how to display the Library (but it's now hidden again) and delete an iTunes preference file.  This solved the problem for a while. But I have forgotten how to display the Library again and can't remember the name of the preference file to delete.
    Anyway, the problem should have been fixed by now we are at V 10.6.3
    If there is no solution then I am stuck with copy and paste - a very unsatisfactory system when I am playing a playlist live.

    Found the answer myself (from a tip in another thread):
    You have to reboot both your Mac and your iPhone...

    Are you leaving the box unchecked to Manually manage music & videos? You don't need to to add anything to the iPhone.
    Simply drag the playlist to the iPhone to manually add it.

    Hi Lukeclear17,
    The article linked below details both why you may be unable to make a purchase using the credit on your account and why you may be unable to choose "None" when editing your billing information.

  • Terminal command that will let me access old username files...

    ... including files saved by timemachine?  I've had a lot of computer problems, first wiped the drive.  It was a chore getting old folders like "desktop" and "downloads" to open for me with my new username and for some reason I wasn't permitted by the system to use the OLD username.  I had to go to every folder and every item in every folder and reset permissions.
    Now, it seems, I need a new drive.  Which means I have to do all those things AGAIN!  Plus re-install software.
    Is there a terminal command that will let me access old timemachine drives (plural) with (unfortunately) multiple usernames?
    Please don't lecture me!  I know I've been hopelessly stupid and inefficient.  I promise to do better.  At least I DID back up.

    what you type is
    man sudo
    I presented an example, which when executed will run as "username" and display the contents of their home directory - the meaning of "ls ~username"
    I suspect that this is going over your head.
    double-click Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal
    type and hit enter
    /bin/csh
    This command starts the C-Shell command line interpreter. The ~ (tilde) character is translated by the C-Shell as the users home directory. For example, "ls ~" will display the contents of my home directory (folder) which is /Users/disguise
    You man want to read up on C-Shell and UNIX commands.

    These kinds of delays can happen when a service is bound to a particular piece of hardware.
    So as an example the [email protected] uses "BindsTo=sys-subsystem-net-devices-%i.device".  So when you enable [email protected], the part between the '@' and '.service' is what it will use in place of the '%i' of the BindsTo parameter.
    This was a common problem when there was the change from the old kernel namespace used for network devices to the persistent udev naming scheme.  During installation (or any time one was in the live media), it would use dhcpcd@eth0, so it would make sense that enabling dhcpcd@eth0 would set you all up for a nice ethernet connection when you launch the system for the first time.  But then the 80-net-slot-names.rules udev file would change the interface name, making the BindsTo parameter time out after a while, since it would not be named something like enp2s0.
    See if there are any failed units in the output of systemctl.  Of course you will have to do this after systemd claims to have "finished" booting.
    thanks, will digg into that. i do have some renaming policy there.. cause i have eth0 shown in ifconfig for example
    i remember i did something about it in the past, because i never got used with the new naming scheme.

    Your post helped me figure it out why my Ethernet interface name was changed to enp0s3 and why - I like the old naming convention ethx easier for me to remember.  So went the route with custom rules in /etc/udev/rules.d
    Here is what I used.
    70-my-net-names.rules
    SUBSYSTEM=="net", ACTION=="add", ATTR{address}=="08:00:27:3b:f3:cd", NAME="eth0"

  • How can I change email address on my ICloud account?  It won't let me change old e-mail address.

    How can I change email address on Icloud?  It won't let me delete old email address so I can enter new email address.

    Are you trying to change the email address which forms the login? Or the @icloud.com address you created when you opened the account? You can't change the latter.
    You can change the login address as long as it isn't an @mac.com, @me.com or @icloud.com address.
    Firstly, if you have 'Find My iPhone/iPad/iMac' enabled on any of your devices, turn it off.
    Create a new email address, for example  at Yahoo or Gmail, or anywhere convenient (or you can use an existing address as long as it has never been associated with an Apple ID).
    Go to http://appleid.apple.com and click 'Manage your Apple ID'. Sign in with the current ID.
    Where it says 'Apple ID and primary email address' and gives your current ID email address, click 'edit'.
    Enter your new address and click 'Save changes'.
    Now you will need to go to each of your devices and sign out in System Preferences (or Settings)>iCloud - 'Sign out' on a Mac, 'Delete this account' on an iOS device (this will not delete the account from the server).
    Then sign back in with your new ID. Your iCloud data will disappear from your devices when you sign out, but reappear when you sign back in.
    I re-iterate: before you start, turn off 'Find My Mac' (or whatever) or you will need the services of Support.

    There is no user name needed to "enter" or use iPhones...
    Assuming you mean your iTunes Store account ID:
    Settings > Store > tap ID > sign out > sign in with new ID

I keep getting a window that says user name or password is wrong, but it only gives me an option to enter a password that doesn't match up with that old account name. I need to transfer to the new ipad, but how do I get cloud access?

    You need to reset the password for the "old" account, and then use that to turn off iCloud.  Then you will be able to sign in with your new ID.
    You can reset your password at iForgot.apple.com.
    If you don't know the answers to the security questions, you will need to start there.

    -If you established a rescue email address, there will be a link on the "Passwords & Security" page of id.apple.com.  Clicking the link will send the reset to your rescue email address (NOTE:  This is not the same address as your Apple ID email)
    -If there is no link on the page, then you didn't establish a rescue email address.  Contact AppleCare at 800.694.7466 (If you are in the US), and ask for account security.  You will need to answer some questions to verify your identity, AND you will need access to a computer to generate a temporary support pin.

  • [solved] systemd and tftpd

    [edited for additional question clarity]
    [edited again showing result of running in.tftpd manually]
    I have a recently installed systemd based machine with 2 NICs. One faces the LAN and runs dhcpcd, the other faces a local isolated subnet and runs dhcpd and tftpd.
    Everything was working until an update early this week (including the new 3.6.9 kernel) caused the eth0 and eth1 to swap places.
    I tried a udev rule to assign the eth0 and eth1, but it didn't seem to work.
    Subsequently, I just renemaed the eth0 and eth1 in the dhcpd.service file and the /etc/conf.d/network file referenced by the network.service file.
    Now dhcpd4 seems to be working, but tftpd is continuing to fail to start with the error:

    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    I've used the network.service file indicated here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Co … IP_address
    Including this file to configure the static eth0:
    [root@beezey johnea]# cat /etc/conf.d/network
    interface=eth0
    address=10.20.30.1
    netmask=24

    And started and stopped tftpd.socket prior to .service as instructed here:

    Netstat show the IPv6 port 69 for tftpd, but there is no port 69 listening on IPv4:

    1) why tftpd thinks IPv4 0.0.0.0:69 is already in use
    2) how to best configure persistent interface names under sytemd and udev
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated...

    OK, I have it working. There were several things wrong:
    1) The modified tftpd.service file was incorrect. The introduction of the '-l' flag, to run tftpd as a standalone service, not inetd driven, was preventing the socket based unit from working. The tftpd.service file below is working correctly with the stock tftpd.socket file provided with the tftp-hpa package. This file has modifications to make tftpd run only on the statically configured interface.
    [Unit]
    Description=hpa's original TFTP daemon on subnet interface sub0
    Requires=network.target
    After=network.target
    [Service]
    ExecStart=/usr/sbin/in.tftpd -a 10.20.30.1 -s /srv/tftp/
    StandardInput=socket
    StandardOutput=inherit
    StandardError=journal
    [Install]
    WantedBy=multi-user.target
    The "Requires=network.target" and "After=network.target" were necessary additions for restricting tftpd to one interface by it's IP address.
    The "-a 10.20.30.1" argument specifies the interface to monitor.
    2) The /etc/conf.d/network file had typos.
    The statically configured interface uses the network.service file specified here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Tf … er#Systemd
    However my /etc/conf.d/network file somehow managed to pick up spaces at the beginning of the lines after the first line. This prevented the network.service file from extracting the parameters.
    I additionally modified the network.service file by commenting out the wpa_supplicant line, and the "ip route add" line, because this is a wired interface and it is a local subnet with no outbound gateway.
    The netstat output was misleading me. Since the tftpd unit is socket driven, it does not show up as a listening socket on port 69 (this also kept it out of ps listings). I believe systemd had started tftpd.socket and was monitoring UDP port 69. This is why I was experiencing the "Address already in use" error on the tftpd.service file that specified the '-l' option.
    The persistent interface names where established via a Udev rule, as specified here:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Ud … ork_device
    This led to custom interface names, which required the /etc/conf.d/network file, and other network config files be updated.
    These steps led to a working tftpd service on one statically configured interface only.
    The only remaining systemd issue to be resolved on this host is to restrict the dhcpcd client to the other interface only, but that's another post.

  • PROBLEMS SETTING UP EMAILS AS DEVICE REFUSES TO RECOGNISE PASSWORD AND/OR USER NAME

    PROBLEMS SETTING UP EMAILS AS DEVICE REFUSES TO RECOGNISE PASSWORD AND/OR USER NAME
    My 9800 ( I have 2 - one spare )  is driving me nuts- will not let me set up email accounts from my other Curve model.
    Repeatedly told that either user name or details are wrong, yet they are RIGHT on website.
    Exasperated
    Help please??
    Fair winds and kind landfalls

    Thank you- I have read through that thread and can see some resonance with my issue.
    My AOL emails work VERY fast with BB, in fact almost simultaneously received on PC & Torch " ping ping!"
    This issue only raised its ugly head when I had 2 Torches replaced by my insurers.
    Whilst the claim was in process I used a new Curve, loaded from backup on PC to keep emails going and of course phone & web facilities. ( I use the BB to power internet via bluetooth to my PC / laptop when living on a remote island with no phone lines or power supplies)  All was fine. Swapping email accounts took a few minutes with the usual password confirmations for each AOL screenname etc.
    Then the new Torches came back from insurers, and I tried to swap devices. Phoning & texting is fine. Al data and contacts swap over fine.
    SETUP email accounts.............stymied every time. It says repeatedly that my user name/password is invalid etc etc etc
    Have tried security wipes. Have tried setting up new BB ID & passwords on PC website. All is OK until I try to setup emails on the Torches.  This has used up ridiculous amounts of time- all wasted.
    I love the BB phones and the fast email push......in fact I recently bought a new Sony Xperia Z1 but sent it back because of wifi coverage meant no emails on that superb phone for lots of the time.
    Good old BB I said..........I always get emails wherever I am. ( Rural Scotland has very patchy radio & wifi coverage)
    Was about to purchase new Z10s just to get a bigger screen, but now I am averse to buying ANY BB phone again because this present mess means I may never get emails set up again.  How nuts is that?
    Many thanks for all help & suggestions..........boy do I need them!!
    Kind wishes from West of Scotland

  • Is there a way to access Time Machine files associated with an old user name?

    My iMac was running super slow and there was a bunch of programs, etc. that I wanted to get rid of anyway so I thought I would do a "clean install" from my Snow Leopard disc.  I moved items on my desktop to my Seagate external drive and then unplugged it.  I have had Time Machine saving to it for a long time so I was confident I could just move a few items (pictures, music, etc.) back on to my hard drive when the install was completed.  To my surprise, when I went to Time Machine I found the items I had moved from my desktop but no earlier versions of my other files.
    In researching this issue a little bit, it appears that perhaps I created a new user name when I did the install and that my historical items are likely still on the Seagate but stored somewhere associated with my old user name.  I understand that if I can change my user name back to the original that I may be able to access the items and transfer the items I want.  To compound the situation, I have no idea what my old user name even was.
    Does this make sense to Mac experts out there?
    If so, is there a way to see the old user names and access the Time Machine files?
    I've been avoiding telling my wife that I may have lost all our kid photos so I'm desperately hoping someone can help.

    The problem is that Time Machine detects your new OS X copy as a new Mac and it doesn't let you access to your backups. To access to them, see > http://pondini.org/TM/E3.html
    Another option would be to access to your backups manually. Open a Finder window, select the Time Machine drive in the sidebar and go to Backups.backupdb > your computer's name > one of the backups > your partition's name, and copy the data you want
