  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox and USB Support

I use Virtualbox quite regularly for work and school. I have Windows installed within Virtualbox, and I use it whenever school or work requires. However, USB support has never worked for me (even with the fstab addition) and I thought maybe I'll spend some time to figure this out.
Basically, I may want to do things like insert a flash drive and make it available to the VM, or even sometimes an MP3 player or even my PSP. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. There USB filters, but often times the device I want is greyed out, and can't be selected. When I am able to select a device to create a filter, it doesn't do anything. I did check the Wiki already.
Maybe I'm missing something? Or is USB support in Virtualbox just that bad? I was hoping there would be some sort of way I can dedicate a USB port to Virtualbox, and make it exclusive. I think VMWare can do that but I'm not sure that Virtualbox can.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread because if I started a new thread the title would be identical.  I am also using virtualbox_bin from AUR and while USB passthrough works just fine to my Windows XP guest, it can't be working any faster than USB v1.1 speed.  I have the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and am a member of the virtualbox group.  No permissions problems and from what I can tell there's no corruption of data to/from any of my USB flash drives.  The only issue I've had other than the aforementioned lack of speed is with a 1TB Western Digital Passport.  It seemed to have "lost" some directories.  In other words they appeared completely empty on the XP side.  After shutting down the guest I verified that all of the files were indeed still there and intact.  I've basically chalked that one up to a deficiency in Windows XP.  But this speed issue is seriously holding me back.

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox and screen resolutions...

I'm not sure if any of the following updates could have done it but the auto change resolution feature in a Virtualbox Windows guest has suddenly stopped working... I tried reinstalling virtualbox and extensions and reinstalling the virtualbox drivers in windows but it doesn't work for some reason.  Any one else experience this lately?
    Thanks!

No dice... I did all that and still doesn't work.  Do you think gnome3.2 has something to do with it?

I don't have problems with auto change resolution and my system is up to date, particularly xorg (not gnome, i don't use it).
However I don't use virtualbox-bin (I did, in the past), I don't think its needed anymore.
    I have installed:
    virtualbox 4.1.4-2
    virtualbox-additions 4.1.4-1
    virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.1.4-1 (from aur)
and then installed the guest additions, which should be enough.

  • [solved] VirtualBox and USB

Let me understand something - VirtualBox OSE does not support USB and the only VIrtualbox for Arch is the OSE version which even after installing virtualbox-ext-oracle does not support USB.
    WTF?

"If USB is not working on your Linux host, make sure that the current user is a member of the vboxusers group."
If I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to run the VM anyway, right? Anyway, the user is added.
"The rest of this section only applies to those older systems"
My OS is brand new Arch and my hardware is top-end C2D with new bios so I don't think that applies.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus N911g Devices and Printers Page Is Slow to Open

Hello, I have HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, model N911g, installed as a wireless printer.  I have Windows 7 64-bit.  My Devices and Printers page takes over two minutes to open.  While I am waiting, if I go to Print Spooler Services and click Restart, the page opens right away.  Once the page is open, in the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus device, I ran Troubleshooter and it took about 1/2 hour to finish, and it reported and supposedly fixed a problem in the Print Spooler service.  The assigned Port looks like a recovered port.  However, if I restart the PC and try to open Devices and Printers again, the delay is still present.  I had trouble installing the HP program including the Scan to PC functionality, because response time was so slow.  Now it's installed and working, but the HP program is quite slow to open.  The spinning circle spins and then stops, almost like it has given up opening the program. Then several minutes later the program opens or the requested action begins.

Check the document I linked below. Step 6 might be the solution you are looking for but it will not hurt to start from the top.

  • How to see full HP icons in Devices and Printers Win 7?

THis post is long because I've included all of the clues for analysis, so please read it all the way through.
My HP printer devices - an OfficeJet Pro L7600 All-In-One and a DesignJet T120 - show the same behaviour. In Devices and Printers on my primary desktop PC, they appear and work correctly, but their icons are the default Windows printer icon. I want them to be the device-specific HP icons that I know exist.
The printers are connected over the network.
I have tried going into the properties of the printer by right-clicking the default icon, but there is no option to change the icon. I have tried dragging the icon out to the desktop, but this creates a new shortcut which, although I could change its icon (if I knew where to find it), I don't want a second route to the printer and, reading below, you'll see that it's not necessary.
I made the All-In-One available on a laptop. This instance of the driver appears in the D&P of my desktop machine as "HP L7600 on XXX-LAPTOP". The icon is not the default icon, but the correct icon - an anatomically correct picture of the All-In-One. So, the D&P window can see the full icon, but only from another machine.
Also, I have a Brother All-In-One for 11X17, also connected on the network. It shows the correct icon from Brother. Therefore, I interpret the problem as originating with an HP-specific bit of code.
How can I get the proper icons to display?

    Hello RexWave,
Welcome to the HP Support Forums.
After reading your post I see that your Officejet Pro L7600 & DesignJet T120 icons do not display with the correct image of the printer but as a default printer icon. This is usually caused by the method the printers are installed. I can speak on behalf of the L7600 only as the DesignJet T120 is a Commercially supported printer. I would suggest you post that question there.
Regarding the Officejet Pro 17600 though you can remove the printer from Devices and Printers. Next you want to add the L7600 using the printer software installed on your computer:
    1. Start Menu and open All Programs.
    2. Look for and open the HP folder, here or within a folder named after the printer you will open Add a Device.
    3. Walk through steps on screen and when the printer is added successfully you should have the printer icon you are looking for.
    Thanks,
    JERENDS

  • Windows Folder icon instead of Officejet 6500a Plus E710n icon in Devices and Printers

Can anyone help me to get the OfficeJet 6500a Plus e710n printer icon to display properly in Devices and Printers?
I recently reinstalled Windows 8.1.  However, when I installed my printer, instead of the printer icon appearing in Devices and Printers I get a generic yellow Windows folder icon.  The Fax icon is OK, just the printer icon is wrong.
If I double click on the icon, I get a mostly blank page with a message near the top saying: "Updated information is available about your device.  Click here to download or learn more."  If I click on the notice, a dropdown menu appears with "Download updated information" or "Learn more".  If I choose downloaded update information, a new printer window appears which is mostly blank except for a message at the centre of the window which says, "No tasks are available on this page"  The Learn more option just gives me info about updating drivers.
The printer icon on the Start menu is fine.
I've used HP Print and Scan Doctor to uninstall and reinstall my printer but this hasn't helped.  The program found a problem with the printer driver and fixed it, but that hasn't changed the icon either.
I am running Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit fully up to date, and used the latest full version of the HP installation program for the printer (not the basic version) and HP Print and Scan Doctor v4.6.
    This question was solved.

    Hi,
Try following these steps and let me know if that may help:
From the control Panel select Network and internet and open the Network and Sharing Center.
Click on Change Advanced Sharing Center.
Ensure that Network Discovery is trned on but uncheck the box next to "Turn on automatic setup of network connected devices".
From devices and printer right click the printer and select Remove Device, repeat the for the Fax icon.
Note: if no such option exists for the printer follow the next steps.
Right click the background area and select Device Mahager.
Remove any instance of the printer from Imaging Devices, Printers, Print Queues, Multifunction Adaptors, Other Devices (if a such exists).
Once you are done the printer should no longer appear under Devices and Printers...
Open teh HP Officejet 6500 E710 software, select Connect a new Printer and check for any differnce.
    Hope that helps,

  • Windows 7 devices and printers not showing

The ultimate fix was when MS Support advised be to go to services.msc and start Bluetooth services (and set it to automatic) -- I did, rebooted and the Windows 7 Pro Devices and Printers once again showed up!
Not sure why Bluetooh services would cause my Device and Printers window to open blank (and seemingly keep looking for icons to populate the screen), but I am sure the code fix will be in a fuute windows update.
There was no other place to put this so, I figured that this possible solution will help other early adopters of Win7

NOT SOLVED THE PROBLEM IS BACK perhaps worst: I know it is a lot to read but if you have time please read carefully so we can get to the bottom of this problem.
Tried everything suggested from Bluetooth service to Windows in-place upgrade. Please help!
Most interesting is it is showing same or very similar problem on multiple Windows computers in HOME network and HOME Group. Not on all of them. so here is some background (it may show that some other people with the same problem may
have same setup): 8x Windows PC - Vista, W7 and W8.1, plus Macs, iOS, Linux, Android devices and 2 wired network printers - Brother MFC9120CN and HP Officejet 6500. Now PCs with trouble (1 W7 Ultimate, 1 Vista Pro and 2x W8.1 - Vista and W7 had this
problem before W8 came along but not regularly) have these in common and I believe are source of trouble. All have installed QuickBooks 2011, all needed to print to QB PDF creator by Nuance, that does not work and causes QB app not responding. All
are setup with same printers. So you would say " there you go!! QB 2011!" well not so quick. Removed it from 2 of the PCs no change in the issue.
What I'm experiencing now. W8.1, can not add remove Printers error > Print Spooler not running! I go to services etc. Print Spooler is Auto and running! I restart it or put on Manual it shows running but Add printer no go again. W7 machine - Devices Printers
won't open (EVER!) besides that if I try to Right click any file / folder Windows Explorer Not Responding error. On this W7 is unusual there is A printer (Epson) being installed on other network that I go occasionally, both W8 sort of inherited
the printer that doe not physically exist on their network group. And can not be removed or when I was lucky enough and had W8 Devices and Printers OK I removed it and it came back after while.  Also on W8 there are multiple printers showing of same
model but can not be removed are not active. I mean printers I have on the network. And one more thing right now none of the active printers is default! And I can't make it default. Right click menu does not offer it! see attached. sorry not allowed attach
    just trust me.
Please, please Microsoft God (and smart people around the world) help.

  • Print servers and printers problems on Win7 and Win8

    Hello,
We have some computers, working on Windows operating system in the office: a few forking on the good old XP sp3, one running on the Win7 x64 home edition and one running on Win8 professional (the last one installed for new OS testing purposes)
During last two months I have tested a few print servers attempting to find one which can work with Windows 7: Trendnet, Synology, and D-link print servers. However, unsuccessfully. Here is the result:
       1) Any print servers is working perfectly with WinXP sp3 (full printing and MFP function support, easy configuration and access, successfully scanning and printing operations in 100% cases)
       2) No one print server is working correctly with Win7 home x64 (mostly successful installation but complicated and unclear configuration; printed pages often is missing, no scan support for MFP.
       3) There is a little bit better situation with Win8: 100% printing support on the same equipment but no scan support for MFP
Could you please help me with followings:
    1) Could you please help me configure print servers and printers on Win7 x64, including printing and scanning support?
    2) Could you please help me configure scanning support for Win8?
Please find full list of affected hardware bellow:
    1) Machines, running on Win XP: Panasonic CF-29, CF-74, HP Compaq dc7600, some Acer laptops;
    2) Machine, running on Win7 x64 home: Asus UX21, (OS probably was preinstalled on the factory)
    3) Machine, running on Win8 pro: Lenovo X200 tablet
    4) Printer HP LJ1020 with drivers for XP and Win7, x86 and x64
    5) MFP printer Canon MP600 with drivers for XP and Win7, x86 and x64
    6) Print server: D-link DPR-2000
    7) Router: Cisco RV042G
All the machines has correct drivers installed, all the printers supports all the services if connected to computer directly. I have made all possible steps solving mentioned problems, including automated problem solving wizards on Win7.
Thanks in advance for your support

This is a core I7 Win 8.1 PC with 16GB of ram and an SSD so it screams otherwise.
I do have a lot of devices on my home network but my windows 7 PC which is on the same network loads the devices
and printers menu almost instantly. If it were a device hanging up you would think that the Windows 7 PC would also be affected but it isn't. I will say that Windows 8.1 does identify a whole lot more devices that fall into the category of "multimedia
devices" on the network than does windows 7.
I have tried accessing the menu from safe mode both with and without networking and it takes just as long
    to load.
I have noticed that most of the devices in Devices and Printers also show up in file explorer under network.
There is however no delay accessing that menu.
I don't really have a good feeling as to how to go about troubleshooting from here?

    Hi,
For the issue, it seems one of services related to device stopped.
I suggest you check the services to see if they start.

We can try testing if the method in Windows 7 can work on Windows 8.1 computer.
If it doesn't work, I suggest you remove all device to test it.
Meanwhile, let us try SFC tool to check the result.

  • Should my Computer shows as a device on the Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers.

Should my Computer shows as a device on the Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Devices and Printers.
    Should it? I have an HP p6653w w/ a c7280 all-in-one printer.
My computer is showing as a device with 'trouble' and it says it has NO driver for it.
What would happened if I removed that device? Would I again lose the ability to print ??

Do you have Windows 7?  If so it is normal for the computer to show up in the "Devices" list.  I would suggest you do not delete it.

  • Administrator cannot change printer properties on "Advanced" tab from "Devices and Printers" on Windows Server 2012 R2

    Hello, dear Colleagues.
User with administrators rights cannot change printer properties on "Advanced" tab from "Devices and Printers" on Windows Server 2012 R2.
If to launch "Devices and Printers" on server, all printer properties on "Advanced" tab are inactive (see screen below).
But I can change it manually with "Print Management". Features become active.
The main purpose - to uncheck "Enable advanced printing features"  with powershell
    scripts.
    $erroractionpreference = "continue"
$colPrinters = Get-Wmiobject -Class win32_printer -computername print_server -Filter "Name like 'printer1' or Name like 'printer2' or Name like 'printer3' or Name like 'printer4' or Name like 'printer5' or Name like 'printer6'" # get printers on server and filter with names
ForEach ($objPrinter in $colPrinters) { # get printer details from WMI
If ($objPrinter.RawOnly -ne "True") { # check that Advanced printing fetaures is turned on
    Write-host $objPrinter.Name
    Write-Host $objPrinter.RawOnly
$objPrinter.RawOnly = "True" # Untick and update the object in WMI
    $objPrinter.Put()
It works on Windows 7 workstation, but does not on print server Windows Server 2012 R2 with error
Exception calling "Put" with "0" argument(s): "Generic failure "
    At \\print_server\c$\DisableAdvancedPrintingFeatures.ps1:8 char:17
    + $objPrinter.Put()
    + ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    + CategoryInfo : NotSpecified: (:) [], MethodInvocationException
    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : DotNetMethodException
Can you help me with that? Look like somethings with rights.
    Thank you.

    Hello, Alan
    Morris.
    Thanks for your reply.
I've tried to runs PS Script both locally and remotely, previously running Powershell ISE as Administrator.
I've noticed interesting thing - if to
    check "Enable advanced printing features"
manually thru Print Management snap-in, script works fine. But, time to time after some manipulations on print server, this advanced feature returns to enabled state automatically by system, I think. In this case PS Script does not work. Next, if to disable
feature manually again (thru Print Management snap-in),
and enable manually again, PS Script will work. Very strange situation.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 7 computers asking for network password to access shared files and printers on Windows XP PRO computer.

I have a network of 10 computers configured as peer-to-peer work group. I have upgraded one of the ten from Windows XP PRO to Windows 7 PRO. The other nine computers are all running XP PRO. AS near as I can tell they are all configured the same. I have the
same user and same passwords on all computers. One of XP computers is used as a print server. The Windows 7 computer initially was able to access shared files and printers on all XP machines with out requesting a network password.
Suddenly, the Win 7 computer began requesting a network password to access the shared files and printers on the XP print server. It will not accept any of the user names or passwords (all administrators on both machines with identical names and passwords.)
The Win 7 computer has no problem accessing the shared files on the other XP machines. It can even access shared printers in a different work group. Apparently something has changed but I'm at my wits end trying to figure what changed on either the Windows
7 machine or the print server XP machine.
I would appreciate any help. Thank you

    Hi,
Based on my research, I would like to suggest the following:
    1.
Disable simple file sharing on the Windows XP computer:
How to disable simple file sharing and how to set
permissions on a shared folder in Windows XP
    2.
On the Windows 7 computer, go to “Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings” and ensure that the
    following items are turned ON:
    Network Discovery
    File and printer sharing
    And this one is OFF:
    Password protected sharing
    3.
Temporarily disable or remove all the security software (firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc.) on the computers and check if it works.
    In addition,
I would like to share the following with you for your reference:
    Troubleshoot file and printer
    sharing
    Hope this helps. Thanks.

  • Device and printers long time to open iprint printers

    Hi all,
We have some laptops (windows732bit iprint client 5.92/5.94) that go offsite each night and have found that when opening devices and printers, or word etc that check the printers and can take a long time to respond/show the printers. No doubt this is because of the ipp printers installed from iprint, the less amount of network printers the quicker it opens etc.
Is there a way to shorten/eliminate the timeout for checking of network printers at all?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
try the latest client there is a fix a "slow issue" not sure if it's the same issue that you have but worth a try:
Fixes introduced in the 5.96 iPrint Client
Print Spooler Crash with WinXP/Win7 and 5.94 iPrint Client. (See TID 7014728)
iPrint client 5.94 slow updating windows printer properties page (Bug 865327)
On these computers, what printer model is installed and what driver + version are they using?

  • Network printers take long time to show in control panel - devices and printers

    G'day,
an annoying effect both on Win 8.1 and Win Server 2012 R2: after installing/connecting a network printer for a user, it takes about 10 minutes (sic!) till printer is shown in devices and printers...
Printer is shown and can be used immediately after connect in word/notepad, but properties of printers can only be managed via devices and printers. Work around for setting standard printer: open notepad, click
    print and right-click printer.
But we have to choose a special printer profile, which cannot be done else than devices and printers.
Sometimes even previously installed printers do not show for minutes after logon...
    Restarting spooler: no effect
    Changing drivers: no effect
Printers are Konica C554 series and 4700P series with Konica PCL drivers.
Print server for network printers in Win Server 2012 R2 (VM on Hyper-V 2012 R2)
    No other network issues.
    Thanks and regards.
    McButtonn

Open the printer folder the spooler team built. It's hidden but available and will list just the printers not the devices.
If the print shows up immediately, the spooler has the information.  You will be running the shell command to invoke the old UI.

Enumerating into the Devices and printers UI is then the issue.
    thanks
