[SOLVED] Virtualbox and screen resolutions...

I'm not sure if any of the following updates could have done it but the auto change resolution feature in a Virtualbox Windows guest has suddenly stopped working... I tried reinstalling virtualbox and extensions and reinstalling the virtualbox drivers in windows but it doesn't work for some reason.  Any one else experience this lately?
Thanks!

fowler,
I don't have problems with auto change resolution and my system is up to date, particularly xorg (not gnome, i don't use it).
However I don't use virtualbox-bin (I did, in the past), I don't think its needed anymore.
I have installed:
virtualbox 4.1.4-2
virtualbox-additions 4.1.4-1
virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.1.4-1 (from aur)
and then installed the guest additions, which should be enough.

  • VirtualBox Max Screen Resolution

I've installed Windows 10 Technical Preview in VirtualBox on my Mac and everything went very smooth and fast! But I have a few problems if anyone can please help me.
    1. Guest Additions won't install. "Isn't compatible with this version of Windows" I tried to install via CMD also, but VirtualBox does not see it installed (if it did)
    2. Because of the first problem, the VM's max screen resolution is 1600x1200, while my Mac's Thunderbolt Display is 2560x1440
I've installed Windows 8.1 Preview before and it worked, so I think it's a problem with Windows.

Both of you must work with VirtualBox to resolve this peculiarity.  VirtualBox is not a Microsoft product and is not supported by Microsoft.
Oracle has sole responsibility for support of their products and the VirtulaBox website is found @

The appropriate forum for discussing this situation is in the VirtualBox forums found @

The VirtualBox Guest Additions are also the sole responsibility of Oracle, not Microsoft!

  • Xorg 1.6, nvidia and screen resolutions

I just upgraded to xorg 1.6 from testing, including the nvidia drivers and kernel from testing.  Everything is working great (and it fixed the libxi keyboard layout problems I was having), except that I can no longer select the screen resolution I want from the nvidia-settings application.  The set of resolutions is very limited and I'm getting a horizontal stretch due to an incorrect aspect ratio.
I've tried manually adjusting the xorg.conf file after saving it in nvidia-settings, but it makes a mess of the file and I couldn't get it working.  Does anybody know how to add screen resolutions into the nvidia-settings application?
    Thank you!

Happened to me with most recent 1.5 update, I downgraded back to previous one to get working again. And now same happened with 1.6, this time I downgrade again without any further testing until someone else gets it solved

  • [SOLVED] Virtualbox and USB Support

I use Virtualbox quite regularly for work and school. I have Windows installed within Virtualbox, and I use it whenever school or work requires. However, USB support has never worked for me (even with the fstab addition) and I thought maybe I'll spend some time to figure this out.
Basically, I may want to do things like insert a flash drive and make it available to the VM, or even sometimes an MP3 player or even my PSP. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work. There USB filters, but often times the device I want is greyed out, and can't be selected. When I am able to select a device to create a filter, it doesn't do anything. I did check the Wiki already.
Maybe I'm missing something? Or is USB support in Virtualbox just that bad? I was hoping there would be some sort of way I can dedicate a USB port to Virtualbox, and make it exclusive. I think VMWare can do that but I'm not sure that Virtualbox can.

I hope it's ok to post in this thread because if I started a new thread the title would be identical.  I am also using virtualbox_bin from AUR and while USB passthrough works just fine to my Windows XP guest, it can't be working any faster than USB v1.1 speed.  I have the appropriate entry in /etc/fstab and am a member of the virtualbox group.  No permissions problems and from what I can tell there's no corruption of data to/from any of my USB flash drives.  The only issue I've had other than the aforementioned lack of speed is with a 1TB Western Digital Passport.  It seemed to have "lost" some directories.  In other words they appeared completely empty on the XP side.  After shutting down the guest I verified that all of the files were indeed still there and intact.  I've basically chalked that one up to a deficiency in Windows XP.  But this speed issue is seriously holding me back.

  • Rotated Displays and Screen Resolution

I have two displays (NEC 1740CX) connected to the 7300 in the Mac Pro by DVI. Both displays are rotated vertically.
One is set for 270 deg rotation, the other for 90 deg rotation. The resolution for both displays is set to 600x800.
But for some reason, the info is not remembered on reboot. One display usually comes up properly. The other comes up as an 800x600 screen (small of course, on the vertically rotated display). Sometimes it will flip flop -- and the good/incorrect displays will switch. Sometimes neither display will come up in the correct resolution. It behaves as though the display preferences aren't being saved properly.
I don't know if this is an nVIDIA/driver problem, or something funky in OS X (10.4.10). But each time I boot up I have to go in and reset the display resolution on at least one of the two.
    Any ideas??
You can see why I need this seemingly odd arrangement here: http://home.roadrunner.com/~nq5t/IMG_4348.jpg

  • Adding second monitor to iMac and screen resolution

I want to get the converter to plug my 17 inch IBM SVGA monitor into my iMac. The IBM monitor is quite old (one of the first 17 inch IBM color monitors I think). I understand what converted to buy so I can plug it into to iMac. I have no idea what resolution is possible on the IBM. Is this a concern???
I probably will upgrade to a current flat screen for the second monitor later but would really like to try this and see if 2 monitors at home is useful or not.
    Thanks!

I assume (based on the computer information attached) that your imac is less than one year old? Silver color? If so, you need to find out what connection this other monitor has. Could be one of two - VGA or DVI. If you have a cable for this other monitor already bring it with you to the store if possible (not ordering of the internet). Your imac can produce a variety of resolutions so I would not be concerned about that especially with a 17" monitor.
Could be two possible connectors - mini dvi to vga (probably based on the info you provided) http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9320G/A
Or mini dvi to dvi http://store.apple.com/us/product/M9321G/B

  • [SOLVED] Cannot Change Screen Resolution

Today, I reinstalled Arch — I replaced the Windows partition with a new / partition, and the old partition became /home. Now, with the new installation, in X, I cannot get a resolution higher than 1024*768. xrandr lists 1280*960 among others, but if I try to switch to it, the video card stops sending the video signal to the monitor and the only way out is to raise elephants.
    Hardware:
    Video Card: NVIDIA RIVA TNT2
    Monitor: ViewSonic A70f+
I am using the nouveau driver for now. In the old installation, I believe I was using nv.
    How do I fix this?
    Last edited by woddfellow2 (2010-12-19 05:16:25)

Adding nomodeset fixed it. The resolution is now a surprising 1400*1050:
    http://img.ly/system/uploads/000/631/85 … _scrot.png
I didn't know my monitor was capable of 1400*1050. I thought its maximum was 1280*1024.
It also got rid of the framebuffer... heh heh
I also switched back to the nv driver.
[2010-12-19T12:19-0600] Update: That's odd... It went back down to 1280*960. Oh well, I originally wanted that resolution anyway: http://img.ly/system/uploads/000/632/75 … _scrot.png

If I wasn't, I wouldn't be able to run the VM anyway, right? Anyway, the user is added.

My OS is brand new Arch and my hardware is top-end C2D with new bios so I don't think that applies.

  • [SOLVED]ARU and screen-vs

    Hello All,
So let me start at the beginning. I have been using linux for about awhile an have been using Ubuntu and CentOS on and off. After hearing about Arch I thought I would give it a try. I currently have Arch install as a command line environment only. Mostly for learning purposes. I was doing some reading here: http://kmandla.wordpress.com/.
So here is my question. I am about confused about AUR. What exactly is it? and I am confused on how to setup screen-vs. How does this all work in Arch. Here is the link to screen-vs that I found in AUR. http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=6006
    Thanks in advance!

So if I understand from the instruction. Download the patch for screen and all the files from  here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/screen-vs/screen-vs/
After that I would run makepkg -s and then run the install with pacman? Does that sound about right?

You seem to be very confused about what servlets and JSPs are. These are
things that run on the server and generate HTML. They can't possibly know
if a user has scrolled the page, because the user hasn't seen the page yet
when they are run. If they tried to read screen resolution, they'd get the
screen resultion for the graphics subsystem on the server, or an exception
if one isn't available (eg, there is no X display set).
For these kinds of client interaction tasks, JavaScript is probably still
              your best option.
              Chris Smith

Hey all you non-ASP programmers, here's the deal. Microsoft has a Browser
Capabilities component and they have defined a special way for you to
populate a specially named cookie on the client side that will then allow
the component to pick up what you sent it. In the ASP script, you then use
the component. Behind the scenes, it works exactly like what you guys
imagine, but Microsoft provides the format for sending the information and
              the parsing.
The client side script does need to be written to include the information
you want, but it would typically be written once and hidden by the lead
programmer in a common include file where most programmers never had to
think about it and thus might think it happened automatically.
