Sorting in Numbers

In Numbers, has anyone found a way to sort only selected cells, without moving cells in the same rows, but in unselected columns, as per Excel?

Thanks again Jerry,
I use Excel at present for several functions, but my principal document records seven bank accounts, four credit card accounts, premium bond records, fuel consumption for two cars, plus one or two other miscellaneous sheets.
For the principal bank accounts, there is semi-automatic input for regular receipts and outgoings, but there is always additional, irregular income and expenditure, which happens on dates preceding some of the "auto" input, so it is desirable to resort according to date after input, without moving cells in other columns with associated, but not directly related data. It is also not that uncommon for bank statements to show items that I had forgotten, so it's desirable to add them in the correct place chronologically. I can't imagine I'm alone in that!
For the credit cards, it is useful to have them side by side, all on one sheet to maintain an overwiew, plus a tally of the total of all card spending, but, obviously, when there is input for one card, it does not want to affect the columns for the other cards. I often gather credit card slips togethether in one session and input the data without needing to sort the slips into date order first. After all, why spend time organising that when the software can do it for me? And my wife often finds relatively old slips in her handbag, after I think I've finished!
I am new to Numbers, as you can tell, but at first sight it seems excellent value in most respects and I would like to make it work. I can already envisage other means of achieving what I want, such as using separate tables on the same sheet, so I shall persevere, experiment and keep you posted!
Happy number crunching,
NM

  • How can I sort in Numbers 3.0? All data are getting rolled around!

    I wanted to sort column B
    And that's the result.

    Can't see the what's in the screenshot very well, but here's one way to sort in Numbers 3.0. The menu popped up after I clicked the triangle by D.
    If you're sorting cells with formulas in them, here's a heads up that the sorting behavior has been changed from Numbers 2.3. It now closely matches the sorting behavior of Excel and other spreadsheets.
    If you're trying to sort by more than one column, say first by Name then by RP then by LP, unfortunately Numbers 3.0 does not have that functionality built-in to the interface the way Numbers 2.3 did.  But there's a fairly easy workaround.  Set up a new column E and fill it with the formula =A&C&B, and then just sort by column E.
    Here you seem to have numbers in B and C, in which case if you need a multicolumn sort your formula gets a little more involved because you have to pad the numbers with leading zeros so they sort correctly.  This is easily done with something like this in column E:  =A&RIGHT("00000"&C,4)&RIGHT("00000"&B,4) .

  • How to sort in numbers 3.0 sort ascending is grayed out

    I tried to follow "how to sort" in numbers, but I am doing something wrong. My "sort ascending" and "sort descending" are grayed out.

    Hi Jerry,
    I suspect you have merged some cells in the table somewhere. This confuses it, as it has no way of keeping the rows containing the merge together while sorting.
    Unmerging solved it when I had the same problem.
    Best wishes.

  • To sort in numbers, not possible

    I had no problems to sort in numbers. But now the option is grey, not available. Any idea what to do? I didn´t merge cells.
    thank you

    How have you been sorting in the past?
    To lock a table you select the table, the menu item "Arrange > Lock".
    You can select the menu from the column menu:
    OR you can open the reorganize panel by selecting the menu item "Table > Show Reorganize Panel"

    Is there a way to sort a Numbers spreadsheet on an IOS device?

    If I double tap in a blank cell or one with numbers, I get the numerical keyboard but no input bar or buttons for the other keyboards.  If I double tap on a cell with text in it I get the alphabetic keyboard but no input bar or buttons for the other keyboards.  If I double tap on a cell with a formula in it I get the formula/function keyboard but no input bar or buttons for the other keyboards.  All my spreadsheets are shared through icloud with my wife's iPad and I'm sitting here getting it all to work perfectly on hers, but not on mine.

  • Simple sort question - Numbers '09

    Have a table with a few colums. One is a column of dates and the other of categories.
    Wish to sort the entire table in priority order, first by category, then by date.
    Easy to do in Excel. Am sure Numbers has a way to do this, but can't find it.

  • Possible to sort phone numbers in individual Contacts?

    I believe I know the answer to this question, though it seems there would have to be a workaround, even if using Terminal.
    Many of my contacts have 5 or more phone numbers.  I might also have 10 different URLs and/or several addresses.  I'd like to have the ability, when in "Edit," to simply drag numbers/URLs up or down to re-sort their order.  There also doesn't appear to be any pattern to ordering how information is entered.  For example, if I began fresh and just added URLs they won't necessary stay in the order of entry.
    But even that becomes complicated since I normally add URLs over time and it wouldn't be feasible to delete and re-enter all the information every time I want to make a simple addition.
    Perhaps part of my problem is I'm such a die-hard Apple fan that I'm not even looking at other programs where that would be possible.  I just like the seamless integration of all things Apple.
    Thoughts? Ideas?  Thank you.

    They all do on mine - unhelpful I know
    Even if they are randomly arranged, does each field not have Home, Work etc etc next to it so you know what the first is ?

  • How do you sort in numbers

    Can anyone tell me how to sort colums or rows in Numbers?  It appears to me Apple has made a Spreadsheet that can not sort columns and rolls.  If it is possible I apoligize to Apple, but so far I have not found any way.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Jeldee,
    Sorting is easy in Numbers 3. You click the triangle by the column letter and choose your sort.
    If, in this example, you wanted the data sorted first by Author, and within that by Copyright, and then by Title, all you have to do is sort by the Title column first, then sort by the Copyright column, and then finally by the Author column.

  • How do your sort input numbers horizontally in the same field "6-4-25-23-11-45" ms access 2010

    Hi,
    Is there a function to sort numbers horizontally in ms access 2010.

    Copy the following code into a module in the Visual Basic Editor:
    Function SortValues(varText As Variant, strSep As String) As Variant
    Dim arr() As String
    If IsNull(varText) Then
    SortValues = Null
    Else
    arr = Split(varText, strSep)
    SortArray arr
    SortValues = Join(arr, strSep)
    End If
    End Function
    Sub SortArray(arr() As String)
    Dim i As Long
    Dim j As Long
    Dim lngTemp As Long
    For i = LBound(arr) To UBound(arr) - 1
    For j = i + 1 To UBound(arr)
    If CLng(arr(i)) > CLng(arr(j)) Then
    lngTemp = arr(i)
    arr(i) = arr(j)
    arr(j) = lngTemp
    End If
    Next j
    Next i
    End Sub
    Let's say your field is named MyField. In a query, you can create a calculated column:
    MySortedField: SortValues([MyField],"-")
    Or you can set the Control Source of a text box on a form or report to
    =SortValues([MyField],"-")

  • SORT Varchar numbers

    Post Author: bwilson200093

    How do I sort numbers that are Varchar in the database.  I tried changing the format of the field in my report to Number, but it still sorts:
    945
    8765443
    78
    6567889

    etc.

    Short answer, if they're varchars they're not numbers
    If you can be sure all the values in the database column are numbers, you can use your databases ToNumber/Convert function in the select and order by statement. If all the values are not numbers you will get a SQL error.

  • Sorting in numbers using a predefined order.

    I've seen this question posted, but without a solution beyond, send it to tech support for a suggestion.  That being said, I'm reposting to see if anyone has come up with something.
    Let's say I have this table:
    Fruit
    Name
    Banana
    Joe
    Apple
    Brittany
    Orange
    Scott
    Banana
    Ted
    Apple
    Molly
    I want to PREDEFINE the sorting order:
    Orange
    Apple
    Banana
    Then I want to sort that way.  Sorting by Categories IS NOT how I want this to happen.
    Can this happen?  How does this happen?

    Mike,
    Add a column, Hidden if you prefer, and in that new column enter letters or numbers to define the preferred sort order. When it comes time to sort, use that column. You may need a different sort order defining column for each list that you want to define an order for.

  • Sorting with Numbers New Format

    I am using upgraded Numbers with multiple sheets which are linked.  When I try to sort one of the sheets which is linked to another it gets totally messed up.  Before Numbers was upgraded I did not have any problems using the "reorganize" function in the old format.  I assume the new format is the "sort" function.  Help!

    If I understand your setup correctly, here is one way to do what you want:
    I have no formulas in the weekly 'Results' table, which is just for data entry.
    The formula in B2 of the 'Rankings' table, copied down, is:
          =SUMIF(Results::B,A2,Results::C)
    I simply chose 'Sort Descending' to put the 'Ranks Table' in the desired order:
    Sorting either table does not affect the results.

  • Copy array and sort the numbers in the new array

    Hi!
    I have an array containing some digits where some of the digits are zeros. I want to copy the digits to another array but the zeros (well, I actually want to copy the zeros as well but I want to have them in the end of the new array).
    I suppose I need an if-statement that checks if the old array contains any zeros and in that if-statement copy the content to the new array and put the zeros in the end.
    This is my code so far and I dont know how to go on from here:
    int[] new_array = new int[array.length];
              for (int i = 0; i < array.length; i++)
                   if (array[i] > 0)
                        new_array[i] = array;
                        new_array = array;
                   System.out.print(new_array[i] + " ");

    Roxxor wrote:
    I think I know how to do it but only if I can catch the digits bigger than zero.
    My code below just checks if there are positive digits and if there are, the whole old array is copied to the new one.Yes. Don't do that, you can see it's wrong.
    So my problem is that I dont know how to catch the digits bigger than zero and copy them. Is there any built in java keyword that catches signs, number etc?
    if (array>=0)
         new_array[i] = array[i];
         new_array = array;
    Yes, there is such a keyword. And you are already using it correctly in your code. You are already testing if the array entry is bigger than zero. Your only problem is, you don't know what to do when it is. But now you've been given two hints about what to do.
