Sound buttons on top of keyboard not working

For some reason the keys F10, F11, and F12 are no longer working to increase, decrease or mute the volume. I just got the computer, and it was working fine a little while ago. I think I may have messed with something and now I don't know what I did. Does anyone know how to reactive these buttons?
Additionally how do I check to see if the F7,8,and 9 buttons are working to pause, play, rewind and fast-forward?
Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!

Hi,
Do you hear any sound at all atm? It could be that your macbook thinks you want to use the digital audio output. This is the case if there is a red light emerging from your audio out hole. If you want to fix this you can try to insert a wooden toothpick and try to push the switchback that detects if there are external boxes plugged in. Or take the save way and take it to the apple store.
kind regards,

  • T61 sound buttons (mute/up/down) not working at the moment...

6465 63U machine, and since yesterday (7 July 09) these buttons have not worked. I did change some of the settings in msconfig area per the HP tech and now cannot use these buttons. Can anyone provide some insight as to which services must be enabled to permit these buttons to work properly, once again? TIA, Samuel

Your question is not very clear, but I'll try to help you. I'm assuming you're talking about the volume buttons directly on the keyboard itself.  If you are talking about the green-colored volume indicators that appear on the LCD screen when you press the volume buttons on the keyboard itself, that is controlled by the Hotkey driver. You can go to this site and install the driver:

    Hope this helps.

Thanks.  I have followed all the instructions as recommended and nothing has worked so it looks like the restore/update may have been interrupted - would loss of internet connection do this?
Yes it would, possibly even brick it.
Have successfully connected my ipod nano with iTunes so looks like the device driver is working.
Can I use my ipod nano USB connector to check?
It is not much help to you, since the device that you need still not recognized.
Anyway looks like I may have to swallow the loss of data.  Have set-up a call for tomorrow with Apple support so will wait until after this before doing the factory restore!
Good luck, but if you expect miracle from that call good luck again.

  • JDEVELOPER 9i 903 TURNED OUT BLACK, ONLY BUTTONS ON TOP THAT DID NOT WORK.

I am using Windows 2000. One day I opened JDeveloper 9i 903 it was totally gray, no Navigator, no files opened, and when I tried to opened some it did not react.
The problem occured from one day to another. Only thing that had happened(but that had happened before also) was that the local oc4j was killed (not nicely stopped) because it "hanged" because of an error in an web-application(but the web-application worked!)
I have now reinstalled it, and now it is not gray, but when opening a workspace I got the "thinking" cursor, and it does not react on anything.
I thought that the workspace/project was corrupt so I opened JDeveloper again and tried to make a new workspace, I can add a project to it, but I can not add JAVAfiles to the project, and it is inpossible to save the workspace, so then I can not close the Jdeveloper, and I have to kill it!
    What can I do?

What can I do? What JDK are you running? Are you using the JDK that was packaged with JDeveloper? When you reinstalled it, did you delete the old version first?

  • HT1199 Help. Forward button on keyboard not working on itunes anymore. anyone have any ideas?

Forward button on keyboard not working on itunes anymore. This always used to work i don't know what has changed. Click on next track works also does the remote control.

If you are referring to the functional keys on top. do you press FN key together with the F7, F8 or F9? Does that work?
I hardly ever use the F keys as CMD_ARROW is much faster for me and SPACE bar stops or starts as long as iTunes app is in the foreground

My iphone5c is still under the 1 year warranty, the top button constantly sticks and does not work properly will Apple still replace my phone even though there is a few chips and scratches on the back?

As Peter says above, only an Apple Store genius can advise you.
But to further clarify, you seem to postulate that if Apple helps you, the cure would be a replacement.  That is not necessarily true.  Let them look at it and advise you what the remedy is.  They may offer you nothing (saying it's your fault), or they may offer you a solution (keeping your current iPhone), or possibly a replacement.

  • None of the buttons on my Torch will not work - phone inoperable

The buttons on my Torch will not work...I can receive calls but can't answer them. I cannot do anything with the phone...it is fully charged - HELP! I am traveling and this is now critical!

I don't have a 9800 here to test, but if you keep the keyboard closed, isn't there a onscreen enter key?
Normally the buttons not workng is indicative of moisture issues. It sounds like what I have seen multiple times on a device with moisture damage.
Even sitting on a bathroom counter during a hot steamy shower or bath can cause keyboard and trackball problems UNTIL properly dried out. It really is more common than you think.
    1. Remove the battery immediately!! Do not attempt to turn on your BlackBerry.
    2. Let the device dry in a warm, dry place for 3 to 5 days* (see below)
    3. DO NOT "check it each day" by placing the battery in. Leave it be to dry completely. This takes time. Replacing the battery to check it can only damage it more (moisture + electrical current = disaster).
    4. If the device is warm after the drying period, allow it to cool to room temperature before placing the battery back in.
Suggestions on drying your BlackBerry in a warm place (open, with the battery out):
*Place the BB in a container of dry UNcooked rice, and then you might also place it in any of the locations mentioned below.
*On top of any dry heat emitting electronic component: TV cabinet or CRT, LCD, cable TV/Satellite converter box or plasma monitor
*On the dashboard of your car on a sunny day

  • HP Pavilion G6 - Keyboard Not Working

I am having a problem with the mothers laptop, it was working fine yesterday but when turned on today some of the keys have stopped working! Its the top row of letters, Q to P with the exception of T & Y and also the up and left arrows are not working, just wondering if anyone has experienced this in the past? I have removed the keyboard and cleaned it, made sure it was connected properly and it was. I have removed the battery, held down the power button for 30 seconds and then reinserted the battery. I have loaded the default settings in the BIOS. I have uninstalled the keyboard and the restarted the laptop. None of these have worked and I am now stumped! So any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

    Hi  ,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues, with help from the community!
I came across your post about the Notebook, and wanted to assist you! I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion g6-2044so Notebook and issues with the keyboard not working. You can do a system restore. System restore will help if something automatically updated and did not go well on the Notebook. When performing a System restore please note remove any and all USB devices. Disconnect all non-essential devices including the USB keyboard, as they can cause issues. I hope this helps.
    Thanks.

  • Leno Yoga Keyboard not working.

    Hello,
I have been using my yoga for about 2 months now without any issue. But a few days ago, I was doing some school work and suddenly, the keyboard stopped working. Not all of the keyboard has stopped working though. The function keys still work. I gave the laptop to the it support people at my school and after 2 days, they have gotten nowhere. I would appreciate as much help as I can get as I would like to stop using the on screen keyboard as I do not like it.
Below are a list of things that still work ( on the yoga keyboard area):

  • HP Touchsmart tx2 1025dx keyboard not working. Touchscreen does work. Help.

HP  Touchsmart tx2 1025dx keyboard  not working.  Touchscreen does work.  Help.

I am having the exact same problem with the DoS beep that now sounds like screetching upon boot up. It is so bad that I can no longer turn off the computer, or it usually doesnt boot up for hours. I will give the USB keyboard trick a try tho.
The worst of it is that I leave the computer on standby at night to avoid the boot issue, and the computer starts itself up at night, like 2am and starts beeping nonstop until I manually power it down with the power button. Ive been having these problems for 2 years, since I first purchased the computer, and I just recently found out that the battery has failed, even though the computer is ALWAYS plugged in, and has been used on battery mode for all of 10 hours max. I believe this boot problem is a battery related issue. This battery is not on the HP recall list (not surprisingly).
I called HP customer support, and even contacted a case manager. They pretty much dont want to hear about the problem because I am out of warrantee x1 year. They pretty much dismiss it until I pay 330$ for repairs. They laugh at the anguish this night-time awakening is causing. Very disrespectful for HP customer service. Not sure if I will buy an HP again.
Anyways, let's work on this issue together. Can anybody send me a link to that manual? I would like to try resetting the RAM. This computer is in brand new condition, and the keyboard, battery and boot are all malfunctioning for no reason at all.
Best of luck in your search for answers.

  • Keyboard Not Working and Question Mark Folder on Startup

I've got a question for a Mac Genius: What is the cause of my keyboard not working and a grayscreen coming up on startup? I'll give you a little background. I have a 1.83Ghz Macbook that is two years old now...almost exactly. I came back from work yesterday and it was in a semi-frozen state. Two apps were frozen but the finder was still alive. Within 10 seconds of trying to navigate through the Finder, it froze too. I went ahead and tried to restart it, but nothing happened. I held down the power button and it shut off. When I tried to start it back up a gray screen comes up. It makes the chiming sound but goes no where. After about half a minute the folder with the question mark will appear. The first few times I tried it, it seemed like the optical drive was trying really hard to work, but it doesn't try so hard anymore. None of the keys work and the Caps Lock and Num Lock don't light, so I can't use any of the keyboard commands to work my way around (resetting PRAM/using startup disks). The CD is stuck in it because I can't force eject it. I believe the trackpad is also not working, but I couldn't be sure.
Previously I had noticed that when I came back from work I would find Mozilla Firefox using tons of the CPU when it wasn't really doing anything. This heated up the computer and made the fans spin at crazy speeds(6000RPM). I will try the Hard drive in another computer tonight probably because I'm pretty sure that's not the problem, but I would like to be sure.
Any ideas would be helpful! I'm just about to tear it open and see if anything has been physically fried.

I went ahead and tried to eject the CD with an external mouse but it didn't work. What I ended up doing is swapping my hard drive into my friend's computer and discovered that that was the only problem. It appears that my HDD was totally fried because after I booted off of the start-up cd, the HDD was nowhere to be found within disk utility. My computer starts up fine and the keyboard works fine when I have someone else's HDD in mine. I'm really surprised that the Macbook needs a good HDD to operate it's trackpad and keyboard. Thank you for your help! Although now I have a new question; is there any way to salvage the data trapped on my old HDD? Cheers!

  • The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.

The sound on my Macbook Pro does not work.  When we press the volume buttons, the sound icon pops up, but the bar is full with a small "Does not work" circle below it, and nothing happens when I hit volume up or done.  I went into system preferences, but there aren't any options there that I can see to change it.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't provide any help for a MacBook Pro, other than indicating to call Apple Support" (sic).
Au contraire. TS1574's title and affected products are thusly:
"Troubleshooting issues with no audio from built-in speakers on Macs
Products Affected Mac mini, MacBook, MacBook Pro, iMac"
As a result, the instructions of the article are relevant. To be sure, follow those steps, the last of which is to contact Apple.
So, by way of reminder, here are the steps to troubleshoot the audio on your MacBook Pro. There is no red light, so the port is likely fine. Headphones work, so clearly your sound card is fine.
    1. Ensure an incorrect version of OS X is not installed. If one is, then reinstall or erase/install after backing up your data.
    2. Remove any external audio devices from USB, firewire, etc.
    3. Open Sys Prefs > Sound > Output
If Internal Speakers is listed, select it and test again.
If Digital Out is listed, confirm again that all external audio devices and cables have been removed.
If mute is selected, unselect it.
If the volume slider is low, raise the volume.
If the above simply doesn't fix it, the issue may be a corrupted plist. Apple Support might be able to help troubleshoot the issue further, per the last step of TS1574.
I hope it gets resolved for you. Good luck.

the return button on my macbook is not working, any suggestions?

By the way, if you are still interested, I found a solution. It's a bit crazy, but basically I have insulated the parts of the keyboard connector corresponding to the power button using some thin tape and then used a very thin wire going from the logicboard (where the test pads for startup are located) to my eject key, this way the original power button does not respond anymore and the eject key can be used as the power button, just like in the new Airs
