Soundtrack Pro Mixdown playback in FCP

I am trying to export a mixdown sequence from soundtrack pro to final cut pro. The only sound should be the music, but when I open the sequence up once its been exported to fcp there are no audio tracks or sound of any kind. I know it must be something simple but right now I'm at a loss of what I'm doing wrong.

They are WAV files; that may be it. I thought maybe the folder structure was getting in the way, so I tried aliases of folders that directly contained files. That didn't work. But then I remembered that I had added them to iTunes a while ago (referenced, not sucked into the iTunes Library) so I could use iTunes to search them. I made a Smart Playlist so I could get to them quickly and then search. That Smart Playlist shows up in FCP X and the files play. So that may be a solution: reference any non-cooperating folders in iTunes and get to them that way. I really do appreciate your taking time to help.

  • Soundtrack pro round tripping to FCP

    Hello,
I've been using FCP for a while now but I'm new to soundtrack Pro and working my way through the Apple Pro Training Series: Sound Editing in Final Cut Studio and soundtrack Pro. Everything is going fine and i'm getting into it - even if a bit slowly!
However when I've tried to do the round-tripping back into FCp the file doesn't appear like it says it will after export. I've just done Lesson 3 in the book (with the same thing happening to me in lesson 2) where I have finished my edit in Soundtrack Pro and I go to export, the process bar comes up and then it takes me back to FCP and my OLD sequence but the NEW sequence doesn't appear. The book says the import XML dialog will appear but it doesn't .....
I can import it manually by going to where I have saved the exported file but surely the whole idea of this round-tripping is to do it for you so you don't have to search for it...
Does anyone have any ideas why this is? Is it just as simple as something is ticked or selected somewhere?
    Thanks

  • 5.1 monitoring in Soundtrack Pro -- Why Not?

I have Soundtrack Pro 2 and was looking forward to mixing and previewing surround audio. I purchased the Logitech z-5500 and found that it was impossible. After a exhausting web search, I found in an Apple doc:
"The built-in optical hardware output included with some Macs cannot be used for monitoring surround with Logic Pro and Soundtrack Pro, because it requires a surround encoded audio stream, such as that output by a DVD. Neither Logic Pro nor Soundtrack Pro can playback surround encoded audio; they output discrete audio streams that can be encoded later in the authoring process by an application such as Compressor."
Here's why I am confused: Both Compressor AND DVD Studio allow for monitoring of Soundtrack exported files (ac3 AND AIFF surround groups) in Pro Logic (not to be confused with Logic Pro) surround from the TOSLINK output.
MY QUESTION: Why can't Soundtrack Pro allow for similar monitoring? (I know I won't hear the rear channels discreetly, but the Pro Logic output works well enough to mix surround.) I know it would need some rendering, but it would be better than having to export mixes to DVD Studio every 10 minutes.

    Hi.
This is often been discussed. It is like Apple says.
For mixing Surround you need 6 discreet and uncompressed channels! The benefit is you hear the audio like it is in your timeline (uncompressed) and can make changes. The second problem with this is, there are no real time encoders for surround formats. So no audio application out there can create an dolby digital stream from your timeline in realtime. This must be done after the mixing process, at the time when your mix is finished and sounds right.
So if you want to mix in surround with totaly discreet channels then you need an audio interface with so many outputs as the format you mix for will have, for example 6 channels if it is dolby digital 5.1.

  • Audio sync problem: exporting from FCP to Pro tools or soundtrack pro

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Final Cut Pro sound export for mastering.....sync problem
    Hey,
I'm editing a 30 minute film and I have done most of the sound edit in FCP and Soundtrack pro and I want to now bring all the sound into pro tools to master the sound but every time i export sound into pro tools it seems to stretch by two or three seconds.
I have tried OMF, AIFF, XML, and Quicktime audio file sut to no avail!!!!
There are 50 tracks in the file so it is quiet large. It's not that there are handles of the file also as when I sync the file with the audio track with the video it syncs in one place but it is still out of sync in another.........It's as if the audio has been stretched!?!
If anyone has any advice it'd be much appreciated
    Keith

Try mixing down the audio first. Sequence/Render Only/Audio mixdown.
You could even try exporting the audio with the Export QT movie command using "current settings" and reimport that file, Add that mixed down file to a copy of the sequence. If it syncs in FCP I'd think it will sync on export too.

  • Files from soundtrack pro play really slow in FCP

I tired searching the threads and couldnt find an answer
I'm trying to lay down a music bed in FCP before i edit a sequence.
I went into SOundtrack pro and listened to it.. looping music bed 40.aiff
    sounds awesome.
go over to fcp.. click on import and i find the file amongst my libary and stuff
then i laid it into my sequence and the playback is really slow.
    i can;t figure it out.
    any help guys?

Sorry it took so long for you to find an answer, happens sometimes. Your bump can bring the wrath of the forum curmudgeons down upon your weenie little head but you got a good response to a post that got lost off the bottom of the page.
You're going to find digital video is full of weird little gotchas like this audio sampling rate thingy. Frame rates. And pixel aspect ratios. And color spaces. &c. I remember when video was just luminance.

  • From FCP timeline...send to soundtrack pro audio file project is greyed out

The send to multi track is not greyed out but that's not what I need.
The stereo audio file is 48KHz and I have 7 tracks of audio in the sequence all of which are stereo except the VO track.
If I use "open in editor" to open a stereo file from the timeline soundtrack only imports one channel.
I'm trying to run these stero audio clips through STP using the waveform editor to quickly analyze and fix the "clicks and pops" also adding a low cut off filter to some of the clips to help eliminate some wind noise.
Seems the only way I can get it to work is to export each clip as an aiff file and then import it to STP, edit non destructively, save as a .stap file and then reimport that .stap file back into FCP........
Any ideas why the "send to STP audio file project" is greyed out? perhaps I have forgotten a preference setting somewhere?
    All help appreciated.
    Thanks,

Hey, Dave. That can happen if you captured your files with two audio tracks instead of a single stereo track. The two channels will show up on two tracks, but they're not actually stereo in the quicktime file.
When you captured, did you click the "OO" button next to the audio channels to link them to stereo? You can look at the contents of the quicktime file with Quicktime Player and see if you've got one audio track with two channels assigned to "left" and "right". If you have some other configuration in the file, check out these old threads for workarounds, or recapture if that's an option.

  • Best program to monitor time spent on FCP, Motion, Soundtrack Pro?

I run a small company as a free lance doc-film maker and was wondering if anyone could recommend the best program for keeping track of time spent working on Final Cut Pro, Motion, and Soundtrack Pro projects for my clients.
I'd like a program that tracks how long I spend on each Final Cut Studio application, like that I can itemize my billing to clients...so many hours spent editing in FCP, doing effects in Motion, even internet research on Safari when looking for photographic/film archives.
Thanks very much in advance to anyone who can help me,
    - Nicholas

In general I'd say a spreadsheet or text document and your own diligence are close enough to get an idea, as charging for the time spent in software isn't going to make you a lot of money.

  • Fcp 7 - soundtrack pro 3.0.1

trying to get my separate audio tracks into stp for a mix.
    I've exported for soundtrack.
exported to aiff while locking out all the tracks I don't want at this time. I want two tracks @ a time and have dozens in some places.
How do I get my separate tracks into stp simply and efficiently? All I get @ this time is 'single' track that has all the audio mixed in together as if the project were finished.

    David,
I honesty think you will get a better / more accurate and helpful response ifyou post this in the Soundtrack Pro discussion area as opposed to FCP.

  • Export tracks from FCP X to Soundtrack Pro

Recording audio on a Canon 7D as guide track and also on a Zoom H4N (sometimes two sources: mic and wireless).  Syncing them is easy enough in Plural Eyes (I find that syncing them in FCP X is sometimes off a frame or two).
I want to edit the audio in Soundtrack Pro. I need to export all of the audio tracks (including the audio from the Canon in case I need some of it).  Using Share I can't seem to get anything but all the audio sources blended together.  How can I export all of the audio tracks separately but still in sync? I want to be able to work with all of the separate audio sources in Soundtrack Pro?

  • Sent FCP project to Soundtrack Pro but how do I get it back into FCP?

    Hi everyone,
I just sent to project from FCP to Soundtrack Pro and now I am wondering how do I send the Soundtrack project back to FCP with the audio adjustments?
I know this is possible I'm just having a barin ** moment today.
    Thanks

    this is your work flow...
1 ctrl click on audio> send to soundtrack pro audio file
2 in soundtrack pro make the neccessary adjustments (noise reduction by any chance?). apply filter
    3 save the soundtrack project...
when you save the soundtrack project, it automatically swaps the old audio file in FCP for the new 'sent' audio file... you don't have to 'export' from soundtrack to get the audio to FCP...
You won't actually notice the change in audio in FCP until you save the soundtrack project, and are working back in FCP.

  • Can I save ALL effects on a Soundtrack Pro clip at once, for reuse w/ FCP?

i am using soundtrack pro with fcp for the first time. i have several different clips which need the same group of effects (the same sound-tweaking) placed on each separate clip so that that the overall sound of this one scene (composed of many clips) remains the same once its treated. how can i do this? is there a way to save ALL of the effects on a given soundtrack clip and then apply these instantly to the rest of the same scene's clips? in other words, can i avoid having to add many (6, for example) separate custom setting to each separate video clip within a particular scene?
    thanks,
    marc

    jim,
i fiddled with the scripting function for a few hours, following the instructions within soundtrack's "help" files. i was able to save a script, but once i'm in fcp, i control click on a given file, click "send to...script" then highlight my saved script. always, a dialog box comes up asking if i really want to continue, as it will "destroy" the file. sure enough it does destroy the file, turning the audio into a bunch of very high pitch bleep sounds. so i'm confounded, and, frankly, stupified.
doug, i'm also stupified with lift and stamp. i can get the sound "palette" opened, but the "save as preset" button is grayed out, making the feature impossible to use.
perhaps i should place these new problems on a new post but i thought i'd reply here first for what it's worth. i thank you both for your inputs. in theory, either one of these options would be ideal, but i've spent about 3 hours and can't get either to work properly....

  • Soundtrack Pro back to FCP some clips lose volume

I'm having issues exporting a final mix from Soundtrack Pro.
I didn't have this issue with the last version on my PowerMac.
I send everything to STP from FCP, mix it, export it, and bring it back into FCP and one file (dialogue track) is not included.
I go back to Soundtrack pro, it won't play there either until I re-open the application or move the file to another track, but still, when I do that and re-export, the same thing happens.
Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
Also (and maybe related?), when I open this file as an audio file it comes up with what looks like a 5.1 surround setup.
I couldn't find anything in preferences that would allow me to open it as a simple stereo file.
    That would be cool.
    Thanks again for any help/advice.
    Best,
    Terry

    Thanks for the reply.
Everything is being sent to submix 1,2 and the master mix seems cool. I actually don't have surround issues (I don't think). It's just that the .mov files have 4 tracks of audio (HVX200) and four tracks always come up when I open the audio files in the audio editor. For some reason my mind went right to surround issues (all my faders are set to stereo pan).
The issue I'm having feels pretty strange...one group of tracks (all from the same source .mov file although it's always a different .mov file with each project I try) always fails to export (both in master mix and individual tracks). I don't get any error message, I just can't hear that track. All the volume levels, envelopes, etc...are fine in STP.
When I return to Soundtrack Pro, I can no longer play (hear) those tracks, but if I open one of these tracks that has an issue in the audio editor or manipulate it (switch to surround and then back to stereo, etc...) I can hear it play once again in Soundtrack Pro, but, once I try to export it to FCP the same thing again.
This happens with EVERY project I try, one file at least.
I'm in the middle of a feature film and It's madness.
Any help would be great and very much appreciated.
    Best,
    Terry

  • Exporting from FCP to Soundtrack Pro looses files!!!

I'm working on a project shot on an f900 HD camera with the tapes downconverted to HD-DVCPro to quicktimes. I sb-clipped the QT and I re-synced the audio with the .wav tracks recorded on set. My sequence is set up for a .wav project. I've exported a sequence from FCP by using both Send to Soundtrack Pro and exporting to Soundtrack pro. In both cases I received an error and when I went back to FCP some of my clips were gone. They weren't in the trash or in the Capture folder> I did a search for the file names and they had vanished, or had been renamed. Anyone had this problem before? Should I dump the STP then re-install it? I'll look at Apple support page. Is there a problem between the .wav and aiff? Can Soundtrack Pro bring in .wav or is it only aiff?

  • Soundtrack Pro & FCP....

Ok been working on trying to solve this issue all day and I have come up with nothing.
Does anyone know simply how to "Send a Multitrack" file from Soundtrack Pro back to FCP without having to export the mixed clip.
I know if it was 1 audio clip I could use the send audio file but that is not the case, yet I do wish multitrack would work the same way.
Can anyone who has worked with heavy multitracks explain how they sync the audio to the video afterwards. Once you send from FCP to Soundtrack the audio file loses 1.1 frames, and is causing me nightmares.

I've seen a couple of tutorials and they say if you send to STP via the "send track to FCP audiotrack file" then everything you do in STP will be present in FCP. But I did it as a multitrack send to STP. Why it's not the same thing is beyond me?
So at the moment I have a perfectly edited audio track in FCP that I cannot get to sync up. Talk about frustrating.
