SPARC box

Hi,
I have a Sun V240 box with 2x1.5 Ghz , and 4x73 GB hard drives.
I am going to run there Oracle 9i Database Server Entreprise Edition and BEA WebLogic Server.
I need some advise about different issues before proceding with the installation of Solaris 9.
-Mirroring the disks. Do you recommend DiskSuite?
-File System, partitions, any special here?
Thanks in advance

Hi,
With Sol 9 and Oracle running on internal disks, I would presume this is going to be a test/dev system, otherwise I recommend going for a / a couple of external arrays on separate controllers.
However,
Sol 9 on c1t0d0 mirrored to c1t1d0 with something like the following layout:
c1t0d0s0 / 24GB (24576MB)
c1t0d0s1 swap 8GB (8192MB) or double the amount of memory.
c1t0d0s3 /var 8GB (8192MB) depends on how many logs you have 8GB is loads.
c1t0d0s4 /apps (remaining minus slice 7 space) Use this for applications but not database.
c1t0d0s7 /metadb (128MB) Use this for the metadb.
On build configure as /metadb then unmount and rmdir the /metadb directory, take the line out of /etc/vfstab for /metadb.
Install SUNWCXall if you require it, depends on what you are going to be doing with the system. Test it with different builds if you want.
# prtvtoc /dev/rdsk/c1t0d0s2 > /tmp/x
# fmthard -s /tmp/x /dev/rdsk/c1t1d0s2
This will replicate the disk layouts after install.
Then mirror c1t0d0 with c1t1d0 through DiskSuite / Solaris Volume Manager.
Now use c1t2d0 mirrored with c1t3d0 for the DataBase (73GB) /u01 or split it up into other filesystems as required.
When configuring these 2 disks through format, configure 128MB for metadbs just like on the first two disks.
So you should have metadbs on all four disks.
Set logging on the required filesystem as you see fit, best to do some testing on this for performance and recover times etc etc.

  • Needed help in Installing Solaris 10 on sparc box from windows remotely

    Hi All,
I have few Sun Ultra Sparc boxes. I m accessing them only through putty session(serail port) from my windows system.
Now there is a need for me to install Solaris 10 in the sparc box. But the sparc box doesn't have any DVD drive. I have an external DVD drive.
Can somebody help me out to install Solaris on the sparc box with the components I have.
    1) Windows system with putty
    2) External DVD drive
    3) Sun sparc box.
    Thanks for your help,
    T.R.Santhosh

If you run into a problem that causes the machine not to boot, you can't interact with it via putty. You'd need a physical connection, usually either the keyboard and screen or a serial connection. I would always plan to be able to do so during an upgrade.
If you have sufficient disk space, the easiest thing to do would be to copy over the DVD iso, then mount it up with lofi, and do a live upgrade.
Windows doesn't read rockridge format disks. I would worry that having the windows machine read the ISO filesystem and send the files over would cause name issues. That's why getting the full ISO and mounting it locally on the Sparc is best. Fortunately, it doesn't require a physical drive.

  • Running Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 on a SPARC box at the same time

I know that this is not possible, but still... need to clear it out from the experts...
Have a upgrade request of Solaris 8 to Solaris 10. However, Solaris 8 environment should not be disturbed. How can this be done without going for another SPARC box?
Can I have both Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 running concurrently on the same SPARC box?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Partition fails when entity manager and DBResourceMgr kept together on single CPU Sparc box

We have this situation where we create partitons with the DBResourceMgr (user-visible and session-dialogued)and its consumer EntityManager together in one partition, as recommended by Forte Design pattern for Database Resource Managers. This partition fails to startup on a Single CPU Sparc box whereas starts fine on a Double CPU Sparc box !! Any clue ?

The error you are getting is the one you get on the client when this process fails, right? You should be able to see the real problem in the log of the partition that you called (the one where DBMgrProxy lives in) - that should be on the server. The real clue is that very bizarre "This usually means the process at the other end of the wire failed. Please go look there and find out why." (:).

  • How to configure an X86 Solaris 10 laptop as Jumpstarter for SPARC T1000?

I believe that I have taken due diligence WRT using search and Google to research the topic. There is a little voice that says "hopefully you haven't and the answer is right there in front of you".
That being said, I did find an article for [configuring an X86 box to jumpstart another X86 box|http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/features/articles/jumpstart_x86_x64.jsp]. As many of you well know the T1000 is lacking a keyboard and monitor port so I'm forced to jumpstart the server. I received conflicting information whether I can jumpstart a T1000 (SPARC) box with an X86. My intuition says that this can be done, but may need modifications to the process in the hyperlink.
Before trekking forward, {color:#0000ff}+I'd like to hear from you if you have jumpstarted a SPARC box with an X86 box.+{color} Ideally there would be a [link to a wiki, (much like this broken link I found on Google).|http://www.ignorantinc.com/www/ignorantwiki/index.php/Solaris_Wiki:Procedures/jumpstart] *+{color:#0000ff}Any procedures or lessons learned would be greatly appreciated{color}+*. Thank you for taking the time to this posting.

There should not be a reason it doesn't work the support is there for both sparc and x86 support.
What steps have you taken and what part is not working ?
The basic high level steps for a network boot are just
    to create the image
    cd /os_image/Solaris_xx/Tools
    ./setup_install_server /somepath
    set the client up
    cd /somepath/Solaris_xx/Tools
    ./add_install_client client sun4v
    on the client
ok  boot netAnyway just need some more details around where you are seeing the problem, what you have done etc.

  • CF9 w/ Solaris 10 (Sparc, 64-bit): Problems with mod_jrun22.so

    Hi
We're running a Solaris (Sparc) box and installed Apache 2.2.16 and ColdFusion9 on our system. When starting ColdFusion the first time, the shell script "apache_connector.sh" installs the mod_jrun22.so (must be the successor of mod_coldfusion.so) and adds the required section in the httpd.conf file just fine. (well, after fixing the script... ^^)
The problem arises when starting Apache next time:
httpd: Syntax error on line 414 of /usr/local/httpd-2.2.16/conf/httpd.conf:
    Cannot load /opt/coldfusion9/runtime/lib/wsconfig/1/mod_jrun22.so into server:
ld.so.1: httpd: fatal: libgcc_s.so.1: open failed: No such file or directory
Apparently, this module was compiled with gcc, which we didn't install on our Sun system.
Does anyone know whether there's a module available which doesn't depend on gcc libraries under Solaris?
So far we've compiled everything with Suns compiler Sun Studio 12.0. The reason behind this is that we're using CFX-tags and our shared library uses  C/C++ and embedded SQL for Oracle 11g (yes, we're old school ^^). And since Oracle 11g officially only supports Sun Studio 12.0 when using embedded SQL, we're trying to compile everything with this compiler.
Sure we could install gcc (or at least a runtime-component containing libgcc_s.so.1), but I'm wondering now whether we'll run into problems later when using our C++ library which was compiled with Sun Studio 12.0.
Could anyone shed some light on this?
    Thanks!
    Daniel

We have our EBS 12.0.6 on Sun Solaris SPARC 64 bit. There are few hp printer (hp laserjet p2015dn) configured with our application and they are working fine.
Now we have to add one more printer but ( hp laserjet p2015dn) is not available now.
So please suggest the hp laserjet printer available for Solaris 10 Sparc 64 bit.You already have the same type of printer configured and it is working properly, so I would say it is supported.
What is the difference between the two printers configuration?
Can you print from the OS to the new printer?
What do you mean by "not available now"?
    Thanks,
    Hussein

  • Recommended file descriptors for Sparc Solaris

I'm moving an app from Linux to Sparc Solaris and the app keeps dying with a
    message of:
    java.net.SocketException: Too many open files.
How many open files should weblogic have on a process level and on a system
wide level? The sparc box has a standard SunOs 5.6 I.E. Solaris.

make it 1024, solaris' max, will save hassles. 'plimit' and 'ulimit' are the commands used to configure fd.

  • Arch linux for SPARC, is there still any activity?

    Hello all,
I just got my hands on some sparc servers and I'd love to put arch linux on there.
I found a wiki-page about SPARCH, but the last real edit is over 2 years ago, and the repository is down.
Is anyone still interested in this / working on this?
    Ward

    Ok, so Dave replied.
It's been a while since he worked with the SPARC version, and can't find the files anymore.
However, he does have some very useful basic information regarding what the basic problems with the porting process were, the framework he used (Cross-LFS; http://trac.cross-lfs.org/) and so on. Dave also mentioned, it was far faster to do the compiling on his x86 desktop than the actual SPARC box.
I'm highly motivated in getting something done about porting Arch to SPARC. Haven't done anything quite like this before, but that's not a problem. Lack of time might be though, which is why I'm hereby announcing I'm looking for volunteers to participate in a group effort to get the porting moving along and fully available to the public as soon as possible.
What I can offer is this:
    - Server space from a fast x86_64 Sun Blade (running Arch) to host repositories and possibly do some compiling as well; 1 gbit uplink
    - A Sun Fire V240 with 2 CPUs (1.5 GHz if I remember right) and 4 GB RAM for compiling / testing
    - A plan, lots of ideas, an open mind and skills in areas such as design & co-operation
I would love to get involved in the actual porting myself as well, but as things look at the moment, I will only have the chance to do so occasionally and for short periods of time.
I can and very much wish to participate in designing the whole process though, and the first couple of people I feel the project needs would be designers / project leaders as well. Someone(s) with previous experience in porting any OS to any new architecture would be useful to say the least.
I'm also seriously thinking about kind of combining OpenBSD and / or DragonFly BSD with some parts of Arch. Can't really say which would be the dominating "gene" but Pacman and the rolling release approach are one of the key points of the whole thing. I used OpenBSD for years and loved it for its security and stability, but keeping it up to date and clean (no old libraries around etc.) means you will have to re-install it once a year. I got so tired of that I could simply not go on, and after lots of research ended up with Arch - which I love, apart from the fact that some things keep changing so radically that it's easy to drop out of the smooth upgrade track and get your otherwise super-stable server messed up.
So, this secondary plan of mine has to do with taking the best parts of OpenBSD, DragonFly and Arch, and putting it all together in a way that provides a super-stable, secure and KISS distribution heavily targeted at the server scene, possibly being available as 64-bit only. If it's based on Linux kernel then it will have things such as GRSecurity installed and on by default. Server software packages designed to be chrooted (or at least providing a chrooted version) whenever possible, and so on. Clear, unified way of how the system is configured and how the init works - this is where I'm thinking about the Arch way again. I am leaning towards using the OpenBSD kernel but importing lots of stuff from Arch / Linux.
If anyone's interested in either of these little projects, please pm or e-mail me at jyri (ät) archlinux (punkt) fi

  • Advantages and disadvantages NIS in Sparc & i386 (Intel based machine)

    Hi Sun Experts
I have a query can any one tell me the advantages and disadvantages of Nis setting up in Sparc box and i386 .
    My query's are ........
    1. If i set up NIS in i386 box what is the advantage and disadvantage.
    2. if i set up NIS in sparc what is the advantage
    Thanks in advance

The SPARC/x86 question doesn't really seem relevant here, NIS should work the same whether you run it on a SPARC or X86 box.
The disadvantages of NIS are, as always that its insecure, insecure and about to be EOL.
The advantages are that its easy, easy to maintain, fairly reliable if maintained correctly, stable and works across most platforms and operating systems
    .7/M.

  • Minimal compile & link files for sun sparc?

    hi.
i have been developing an oci dir path project using redhat linux 7.3 (2.4.x.) & gcc 2.96. (see http://sourceforge.net/projects/odpd/) i am using a dev copy of ora9i release 9.2.0.1.0 installed on the linux dev machine. i would like to compile the project on a sun sparc box using sun's C++ compiler 5.3.
so, i would like to get my hands on solaris versions of headers & libraries for #include & linking. i don't see any need to actually run the app against an installed version of ora9i under solaris; i just want to compile & link. further, i don't have root# access on target machine, so ora9i install isn't really an option.
    the target machine:
    $ uname -a
    $ SunOS nydev-app2 5.7 Generic_106541-23 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-4
    on the linux dev machine:
    $ ls -laF $ORACLE_HOME/lib/libclntsh*
    lrwxrwxrwx 1 oracle 16 Aug 31 2002 /u01/app/oracle/product/9.0.1/lib/libclntsh.so -> libclntsh.so.9.0*
    -rwxr-xr-x 1 oracle 9.8M Aug 31 2002 /u01/app/oracle/product/9.0.1/lib/libclntsh.so.9.0*
if anyone can help me get relevant files for compile & link, please contact me: asdrury at sourceforge dot net.

Go to http//otn.oracle.com. On the downloads menu select Oracle Instant Client.
From the 'Instant Client Downloads' page you should be able to find IC packages to download for available platforms, e.g. Solaris SPARC 64-bit. (Latest version is 11.2.0.3.)

  • REP-3000: An internal error occured starting Oracle Toolkit Solaris 10 SPARC

    I am running WL 10.3.6.0 with Forms/Reports 11.1.2.1.0 on a Solaris SPARC 10 64-bit box, specifically a T4.
Brand new install of Solaris 10 with only Forms/Reports installed as the user "oracle".
When I run rwbuilder.sh I get the dreaded REP-3000 error.  I currently have an SR opened with Oracle but its taking forever and I've scoured the net for many different fixes which do not work.  Forms Builder does work fine however.
Some things I have checked and/or changes I have made:
DISPLAY - set properly.  I use ReflectionsX to get to my server, I can run xclock also, I've even tried xhost+.
I've tried running rwbuilder.sh direct at the console to make sure its not a ReflectionsX issue, same error.
    NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P1
I've done an ldd on "rwbuilder" to make sure the binary's dependencies were met, all fulfilled with no problems.
    Updated reports.sh:
    REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO
    DISPLAY=(updated with my direct IP:0.0)
    Relinked reports builder.
At this point I'm stumped.  Anyone actually have Reports Builder working on a Solaris 10 SPARC box or am I poineering this?  LOL

    REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO is correct on AIX
    Take a look at http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/B14048_02/pbr_rfap.htm#sthref3930
To revert to the dependency on DISPLAY and use screen fonts (old font look up algorithm):
    * Set REPORTS_DEFAULT_DISPLAY=NO
    * Remove the screenprinter.ppd entry in the uiscreenprint.txt file.
    * Set the DISPLAY variable to the active X-Windows display surface.

  • SPARC-10 Boot Failure-HELP!

We routinely use ufsdump/ufsrestore to pre-configure systems before field deployment. Suddenly, disks built this way won't boot! Errors are:
    short read 0x2000 characters read
    disk read error
    <above repeated 2 - 6 times>
    boot: can't find /misc/krtld
    boot: error loading interpreter [misc/krtld]
    Elf read error
    boot failed
    enter filename [platform/SUNW, Sparcstation-10......]
This has occured with multiple target disks, using multiple source tapes.
System boots fine from cdrom and disks created previously
    Brief disk build procedure:
partition and mount root slice (c0t3d0s0)
    ufsrestore xvf /dev/rmt/0n
    cd /mnt/usr/platform/sun4m/lib/fs/ufs
    /mnt/usr/sbin/installboot bootblk /dev/rdsk/c0t3d0s0
I only have one Sparc box to try, I am going to try a different tape drive...but I'm stuck!

Sparc 10 architecture ( sun4m) does not know how handle a root filesystem equal to or greater than 2 gig. Older OBP versions it is less than 1 gig. You may have to experiment with the size of your root slice. Other filesystems can be larger than 2 gig, jut not the one you are booting from. This is a limitation in the OBP. This is assuming that you have added larger SCSI disks.

  • Cannot connect to my box via XDMCP etc...

    I already have a Solaris 10 10/08 Sparc Sunblade 150 working great!!!
I just built a brand new system AMD64 x86 box and it seems to work great as well but the one thing I cannot get working like on the Sunblade is a remote desktop session (XDMCP?)... After reading many posts on this I have enabled XDMCP which seems to do nothing, Opened up network services via the netservice command I think it's called and still nothing, seems to not work.... Since the install seems to be identical to the SPARC
install I did... what do I need to do in X86 Solaris 10 to get it to work the same as the SPARC box???
    Thanks,
    Scott

I am also not able to connect to my cheapo AMD Solaris 10/8 machine. The local console gdm login works fine and I can ssh into the machine. I did choose the "secure" option when I installed and have followed the advice I found on several postings in this particular forum. I ran gdmsetup to see if XDMCP was enabled and it was.
I am trying to use vncviewer from realvnc.com to connect. Here's what I see:
main: unable to connect to host: Connection refused (111)
If I go "netstat -an |grep 177" on the Solaris box I see:
    *.177 Idle
    *.177 Idle
I am curious as to whether the pf service might be an issue since it is enabled. The ipfilter service is not enabled.

  • Disk size in Solaris 10

I have some confusion about disk subsystem in Solaris, i am trying to clarify from this forum.
I have recently installed Solaris 10 in one SPARC box. After i installed, the format gives the bellow output.
    0 root wm 19491 - 29648 4.88GB (10158/0/0) 10239264
    1 swap wu 0 - 4062 1.95GB (4063/0/0) 4095504
    2 backup wm 0 - 29648 14.25GB (29649/0/0) 29886192
From the above output, is the size of my disk is 14 GB ?, or the size of my disk is 14+2+5=21 GB ?
I am trying to learn ZFS, so i want another partition in this disk so that i create ZFS on that partition.
I have gone to single user mode by using CD. I assumed that, from the above "format" command output, i thought i have 21GB of disk size and 14GB of free space. So i created another partition with 14GB. Now the format command gives bellow output.
    0 root wm 19491 - 29648 4.88GB (10158/0/0) 10239264
    1 swap wu 0 - 4062 1.95GB (4063/0/0) 4095504
    2 backup wm 0 - 29648 14.25GB (29649/0/0) 29886192
    3 reserved wm 0 - 29127 14.00GB (29128/0/0) 29361024
When i am creating ZFS, it given me a warning that the the partition i have specified is spanned into root partition (first partition), and it mentioned to use "-f" option.
    With "-f", it created successfully.
If i assume now that the size of my disk is 14GB only then,
    (1) how come two partitions are pointing to the same area in the disk ?
    (2) How come two different filesystems are pointing to the same area ?
Please anyone clarify my doubts. Thank you.

Assuming a standard labeled disk it is standrad practice to have section/slice 2 being 'whole disk' for purposes of 'backup'. That would tend to indicate you have a 14GB disk. A prtvtoc /dev/dsk/c?t?d?s2 (change the ?s to the right values) will give a little more on the disk geometry.
In the display from format column 4 is the start cylinder of the partition and column 5 is the end cylinder. From the first set out output it looks like cyclinders 4063 to 19490 are not allocated
In the second set you have created a new slice (section 3) that overlaps both sections 0 and 1 - which is generally considered to be bad!
