Special effects... Chroma key  blue/green screen

Hello, im new to Final Cut, My friend is giving me his Final Cut Express HD 3.0 package and Im wondering if I'll be able to use a green screen/blue screen effect with this software, and if not, which software could you recomend.
Thanks in Advance.

Sorry Edirol if you took umbrage - my comments were intended as a light hearted quip.
As a peace offering, take a look at this old thread where I and others have made a number of suggestions to help new "chromakeyers" - not the least being how to do it on the cheap!

  • When keying a green screen shot, the image being keyed goes a little out of focus when the effect is applied. How do you keep it sharp?

When keying a green screen shot, the primary image goes slightly out of focus when the effect is placed.  What am I doing wrong??

Make a letterbox in Photoshop -two black stripes and a hole in the middle, place it on a higher video track.

  • If you haven't already, why not give "blue/green screen" a try?

Legacy FCP and FCE could always do blue (or green) screen but FCP X makes it a real doddle to get a good key.
For my test I simply used a very cheap blue bedsheet fastened to a wall and without more ado filmed myself babbling for a couple of minutes.
The resulting clip was imported into FCP X and the Keying Filter was added.
There are numerous adjustments you can make, but none of these was necessary as the result was automatically OK.
Here are frame grabs showing the original bedsheet and the final result with a street scene superimposed.
You can click the images to enlarge and examine the edges which look pretty clean........... especially considering the the lack of time and expense incurred!
Obviously anybody can achieve the above results with no effort, so take a look at this short video from Vimeo showing how some of the special effects in "The Great Gatsby" were achieved.
For a visual feast I suggest downloading it and playing on an HD TV.

Now hasn't that pro clip inspired you to try blue/green screen  ...........  or maybe it's completely demoralised you?

it is really impressive, how the automatics 'know' what is you, what is not.
now, add aside you a trackermarker, and you can create pans, camera movement etc .....

  • Blue/green screen garbage matte

can I generate a garbage matte to crop images out of my chroma blue/green screen in fcp 3?
    powerbook g4, fcp 3, laCie 120g hd, laCie d2 dvd +- rw   Mac OS X (10.3.2)

i've a huge green screen to light.
my subject takes up 10% of the screen.<
then you're not doing this properly. Shoot your person close and scale them to fit your shot, don't shoot them wide.
<div class="jive-quote">rather than light the entire screen i'd like to light around the subject (I will then see equipment/light stands, heads etc, in frame)< </div>
You're not making much sense here.
i'd like to generate a chroma key green matte over the objects i'd like to not see, (crop them out w/a green image) then key my backgd. image over the original & garbage matte image. < </div>
Oh. Now I see. You don't want to change the color of the matte in the chromakeyer. You want a green matte slug to place over the video so you can chromakey it out.
That's not how you do this stuff. Chromakeying is not rocket science but it's far more complicated than we c an explain in these little posties. You have a fundamental misunderstanding of the whole thing and, unfortunately, this isn't a film school. Unless someone has the time to walk you through chromakeying as a technique, this is where you come to find out how to use FCP. There are hundreds of informational chromakey articles all over the Internet on the topic. Start with google or your local library.

  • Blue/Green Screen And Multiple Cameras?

Next week a number of us are demonstrating Blue/Green Screen filming and editing to members of our video club who are not familiar with the technique.
Originally the person who thought up the idea intended to have 3 groups of people filming a 2 minute script on a "station platform" a la "Brief Encounter".
So far, so good, but then the creator of the idea suggested we should shoot each scene with 2 or 3 cameras to make it look more professional.
I don't like complications when the aim is to demonstrate a technique, but somebody has suggested there will be a further drawback.
When we cut from one camera to another during editing, the angle of the "actors" will alter but the background will not!
This will create the equivalent of a jump-cut.
Has anyone done such a shoot, experienced this problem or found a (reasonably simple) solution?
My idea of a solution is to have one camera in a fixed position! But, then, I am lazy.

    Hi Ian
You know me and my speculations (what You got without enough Know-How)
But I would try to first apply Green-screen effect to one Camera angle
at a time. Then I can get another background for Camera two etc.
Then save these as QT full quality .mov (or rather back to Camera and new tape
feel much safer this way) and re-import then and now prepare
for multi angle cutting. (By putting one Camera on each track. Minimizing size
to 25% and locate each to one separate corner)
Now playback and I will in Canvas see all Cameras in each corner and can by using
transparicy adjuts which one to be seen.
Then as a last action - upscale all to 100%
    Done
But as You see this is me just speculating. I fell for FC-Pro and the MultiCam
    function here. It's fantastic.

  • How to use blue/green screen?!

    HI
I'm a new user to FCE so i maybe sound like a noob, but how do you use the methods of blue/green screen thing. !?
    thx

"I understand from Wolsky's book that you really can't deal with HD green screen in Final Cut Express 3.5."
Really? I said that? There is one particular problem with HD material in FCE in that that AIC color space is 4:2:0. There is no color smoothing filter for this. I believe Graeme Nattress has one for this. There is a color smoothing filter for DV NTSC standard definition, which is 4:1:1. DV PAL has the same problem BTW, as it's also 4:2:0.
Aside from that the chromakeyer works decently with well shot material. For a really high quality key you should look to third party software.
There is no difference between 3.5 and 4 in this regard.

  • Blue Green Screen Filter

    Hello
I applied the blue green screen filter to my clip. I obviously did not have the subjects feet lit up enough and Im having trouble getting rid of the green around that area. Is their another filter that would help with that?
    Thank you.

    As Telly said:
The Spill Suppression filter can be useful for excessive spill on the interior area of the matte. as the Enhance slider only works on spill around the edges.
Just make sure it lies below the Chroma Keyer and above any Color Corrector you may have.

  • How do I get blue/green screen option & split screen?

How do I get blue/green screen option & split screen?  On iMovie, these options were presented to me, whenever I dragged a clip over another clip already in timeline.  Where do I find these choices in Final Cut X ?  Also, on iMovie, to resume project production, I would then hit the "done" button -- Where do I find a button to finalize changes?  Also , where do I find the option of "precision editor" ?   Thanks

Green screen is done with the Keyer effect.
There is no Done except for transformations in the viewer.
Double click an edit point to open the Precision Editor.

  • How do i use my own image with keying (or green screen)

how do i use my own image witrh keying (or green screen)

Put your sky clip on a layer below the clip you want to key. One or the other will be a connected clip. Apply  the Keying filter to foreground clip (the one with the green screen). The green will be seen as transparent and the sky will show through as the BG. Adjust as necessary in the Inspector.
    Good luck.

  • Blue/green screen

does FCP have the chroma key feature and blue screen capabilities? WHat is the best mac program for that...? What's the most affordable one?

the built in keyer in FCP is alright, I wouldnt say the best though. there are many third party plugins that will do a better job. if you are shooting in DV, I recommend DV Matte Pro from DV Garage
    http://www.dvgarage.com/prod/prod.php?prod=dvmattefcp
Keylight is the best keyer I've used and it comes bundled with After Effects and Shake, although I'd wait for Adobe to release CS3 before buying After Effects, especially if you on an Intel Mac.

  • Exporting keyed out green screen footage

I've keyed out the green screen from my footage of someone standing. I now wish to export it and send to someone else to do all the graphics behind the person.
I've tried exporting as a quicktime but when they recieve the footage they can't put any background SFX in.
    Help anyone?

to export your keying you will have to make sure that your export includes the corrcet alpha channel.
look in your wireframe/ image drop down menu above the clip viewer and select alpha
you will see that by keying out you are removing the alpha (white elements) from the area you dont want to keep ( ie. the blue screen) you will need to provide your fx guys with this info.
try exporting your seq as a quicktime whih supports alpha info (like animation) and choose millions + in the colors to include the alpha.
or you can provide the alpha info seperately on a qt of the same clip duration - copy the clip ad use the extract filer to copy the alpha ino to the RGB channels and provided your FX guys with both the normal clip and the B+W clip - if they know what hey are doing they can put these clips back together in their FX package to just keep the non-bluescreen areas of the clip.
    oes that make sense

  • How to key a green screen separately from motion background

Using FCP7.  I have an animated background running throughout the sequence (it's on Video Track 1).
When I place a greeenscreen interview on top of that (on Video Track 3) and a solid color background for the key behind that (on Video Track 2), the solid color background covers up the animation.
How do I key the interview and maintain the animated background?
Please tell me I don't have to build it as separate sequences.

It is not clear from your post what you are trying to do.
    Screen shots would help.
If you want the area that is green on track 3 to reveal the animation, why are you  putting a solid background on V2?
If the animation has transparency, and is also supposed to be over the the solid color background, then the order for the tracks should be:
V3 - Video with green screen with keyed applied
    V2- Animation
    V1- Color Background

  • Strange Results keying out Green Screen Using Keylight

    Hi,
I'm keying out a green screen using keylight. When I look at the view "Status" in keylight I notice a strange result that I can't seem to resolve. Inside the solid area of the matte (the actor) his pants and shoes area are filled with tiny light green dots. They seem to be causing distortion on my final render.
No matter what adjustments I make to the matte I can't seem to get rid of these. I've attached a few small GIFs to show the issue.
Is there anyway to remove these dots so they are "solid" within the matte or a way to color correct them inside the solid area of the matte in the final result?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards,

That's what the Despot options in the Screen Matte section are for. Alternative options include Minimax, Simple Chocker or third-party plug-ins like Re:Fill from RevisionFX. Also make good use of the various rollback options to control your Alpha levels.

  • Chroma Key Issue - Green Shadows? (pics included)

    Good Evening!
I am finishing up a project in FCP X 10.1. For this project we had to conduct interviews of people, so we employed the use of a green screen while filming so that we could put in our desired back drop during the editing phase.
Everything is working wonderfully, except for a few issues. Several of the people in this video are wearing the same yellow shirt. Without corrections of any kind, this is how people in the bright yellow shirt appear.
After making adjustments with the fill holes, edge distance, and spill level, the yellow t-shirts appear the correct color. However, a green sort of glow appears around the faces and features of our interviewees who are wearing the yellow shirt. (see picture below) How can we get rid of this?
Did I not use the right tools for color adjustment (see settings I used):
This problem clearly correlates to the yellow shirt, as you can see in the second picture the interviewee in the blue shirt is fine.

Try dragging the spill level up a bit. That should help.

  • Blue/green screen - superimpose HELP

Okay, I'm new to this. I need to film two people, a devil and an angel, and superimpose them on another clip on someone's shoulders. Do I have to shoot in front of a special screen? Do I use After Effects and if so how do I do it? How do I extract them? Can any one help me with this? How involved is this? Thanks!

    lighting is critical on
    both subject and background.
Amen! If the lighting is uneven you'll have difficulty creating the key. You've asked a complicated question so start reading the manual and then you'll have a bunch more to ask.
For your sake don't jump into this without some basic knowledge or you're likely to have a mess on your hands.
I once had an employer put a subject in front of a piece of green posterboard and successfully key that video so yes it can be done. You'll have a little more trouble since your shot will probably be head to toe so that the angel can "stand" on someone's shoulder.
If you have the budget, rent a little time from your local television station and use their "weather wall." Make sure they have a head to toe wall, not all station do.
    Good luck.
