Speeds vary widely

I have a MacBook Pro, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV, etc. and I live in North VA.  What I have been noticing over the last two months is a wide variance in up and down load speeds on all of these devices.  Today over the last 2 hours I have seen 3.4/12.3, 7.6/16.4 and the last one 10 minutes ago 25.3/19.2???  I am paying for 25/25.
When I talked to the V CS and techs today, they could not get past whether I was hooked up directly or wifi.  I have seen this type of variance different times of days, days of the week, phases of the moon (I verified that I was the only person on my network).
As I tried to explain to V tech was that it seemed like a V problem be it router or server problem.  Has anyone else noticed this (this was happening prior to the storm)?  Could this be solved by getting a new Verizon router?

The reason we ask is because we can't gaurantee connection speeds over Wifi. Once the signal goes airborn, no one has control over it. If you are getting these slow speeds over a hardwired connection then we have the ability to assist. For wireless slowdowns the only advice would be to either relocate the router to a more central location or change the wireless frequency. Please let us know if you need assistance with a hardwired slowdown.

  • TC data bkup speeds vary by a hundred.  What's happening?

My TC backup data transfer rate is around 80KB/sec when TC handles all ethernet connections to the cable modem - so slow it never completes a backup.  But if I use use my DI-604 ethernet router, & simply hang the TC off of the router, then TC has data speeds of 8-9 MB/sec.  (In both cases, the TC was also set to "join a wireless network".)
I was wondering if anybody had any idea of why the data transfer to TC via DI-604 is around 100 times faster than it is when TC handles all the thernet connections?
    TIA

Here's more details on my setup.  :-)
current LAN setup:  Cable modem is connected to the WAN port on the DI-604 router, TC WAN port connected to ethernet port on DI-604, an ancient tray-loading iMac is connected to the router, and a Cat5 ethernet cable to the other end of the house.  At the far end of the cable is a D-Link DES 1105RE unmanaged ethernet switch, which splits the connection between the 2008 iMac & an old G3 tower.  The tower uses a USB-to-Ethernet converter - thanks to some FL lightning.

  • Step motor speed vary from -40%~+40%

a flexmotion-6c and a 7344 plugged in the same computer, now with the step output to drive the stepper motors, the 5th axis of flexmotion-6c and all the axises of 7344 have this problem!  In the max, i have appointed the speed, but the velocity shown in the max will change ceaselessly while the speed of the motor is really changing in such a big scope.
All the motors are open-loop. the firmware is 5.0. In comparation, another two 7344 are pluged in the second pc, all the axises work very well with all the same parameter settings, except the 6.0 firmware.
I have monitored the step output of the axes with a oscillograph.  The pulse of axis with problem have the variable frequency, while the right ones have the fixed frequency.
So, maybe where the problem is?
          Thanks!

  • Composite speeds vary by the computer that I use to generate it.

I have run into a unique issue when working in SOA suite in JDeveloper. I have built the exact same composite on two distinct machines. Both run Jdeveloper 11.1.1.5 with an out of the box build.
We have deployed all composites on the same development server.
    Results:
Box 1: averages the composite at 220 ms when deployed
Box 2: averages an identically built composite at 120 ms when deployed.
    Just for fun:
When I deploy the composite from Box 1 through Box 2 the speed is 120 ms still
When I deploy the composite from Box 2 through Box 1 the speed is 220 ms still
it has to be something different about the environment itself. Anyone have any ideas?

The composites deploy faster on Box2 (120ms) irrespective of where the composite was build (*Box 2: averages an identically built composite at 120 ms when deployed.* and When I deploy the composite from Box 1 through Box 2 the speed is 120 ms still) which seem to be logical if box2 has better network connectivity to your development server which you can configure by running a long run of ping test from both machines to dev server. Alternatively it is also possible that the box2 machine is faster (may be because of different CPU configs or because of difference in deployed applications etc)

  • Why do threaded applications speed vary at runtime?

I have 1 thread for a breakout game that i have created besides the main of that class that starts the thread. When I run the game, it sometimes seems to run slower or faster than other times. Why is this?

There are many different reasons this could happen such as
    - disk latency.
    - network latency
    - GC of objects.
    - the load on the machine.
It is highly unlikely to have anything to do with using more than one thread.

  • Wildly varying speed on a WRT610N

I have a WRT610N bridged through a ZyXEL P-2601HN provided by my ISP.
The Zyxel is new and after intallation, The internet speed of my WRT610N has started to vary a lot (mostly being untolerably low). Any idea what is going on here and what I can do to get it up to speed?

Does the internet speed vary from the modem as well? Does the speed vary for both wired and wireless?  Try to do the following combination of settings:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Gateway setup page.
    # Lower the MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) from 1500 to 1400 or less (usually found on your routers main/ basic setup page). Here is the link for determining and setting up the correct MTU size: http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=fbf8e8564632422eaa8ea80bf9dcba64_386.xml&pid=80&re...
    Then check the connectivity status.
Second, let me know the current firmware version on the router?

  • Wifi speed and the new Apple TV concerns

One of the great things about my classic ATV is that I can start downloading a movie before dinner, and know that my viewing experience later won't be subject to variances in the wifi speed. In my experience, wifi speed and reliability can vary widely - and my worst nightmare is a video that stutters or freezes.
I new the new box has the faster modern chip, but I'm concerned Apple has no control over what might be the weak link: the wifi connection.
Is it time to make a run on a couple of classic boxes? Are they still in stock anywhere?

The problem is that all services are bundled with your Apple ID ([email protected]):
Your iCloud account (Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Reminders, Notes, Backups, etc.),
also iTunes & App Store purchases (Music, Movies, TV Shows, etc.),
    and the iTunes Match services.
(I guess that all your devices - yours and your wife's are connected to one iTunes library, right?)
If you want that your wife gets her own iCloud account for Mail, Contacts, Calendars, etc. but gets also access to your media then you have two set up two things on her device:
iCloud (Settings > iCloud) with her account (e.g. [email protected])
    and
iTunes & App Stores (Settings > iTunes & App Stores) with your account (e.g. [email protected]).
In this case she gets access to your library and could use the same iTunes Match account.

  • My IPhone 3G reception fixed, a new problem - AT&T *real* data speeds

I've read quite a few topics on this forum regarding the poor IPhone 3G reception, and unfortunately 99% of them are emotions, making it very laborious to distill useful info out of them.
Therefore I'd like to post my personal experience so far with IPhone 3g, listing more facts, than emotions. *I hope this will help some of you, and also hope that others will follow a more structured approach to reporting IPhone 3g problems*.
    *IPhone 3G Model MB046LL, 2.0.1 firmware*
I got my IPhone 3g black 16gb version in NJ on August 2nd, model MB046LL. I work in IT, and I was overall very impressed with all of its features. However, the device had 2 major problems - 3g reception was highly unstable, and the actual 3g data speeds were far lower than advertised, 200kb on average for download and 30kb on average for upload.
I called AT&T, they said I was in the zone with "the best 3g coverage". I went to an AT&T store, and had my SIM card swapped from #3022 to a newer one, #4022. Swapping the SIM card drastically improved both 3g reception and the data speeds.
Unfortunately, I noticed that my IPhone 3g was picking up not as many bars of 3g as other Iphone 3g sitting next to me. The actual dbm numbers for 3g were also smaller. I would continue having dropped calls. I also noticed that my battery would fully recharge very fast (within 1.3 hours), and would fully discharge much faster than it was advertised. The GPS was acting weird, and the voice quality would sometimes be horrible even with 5 bars of 3g. There were more anomalies with that phone, e.g. download speed of 20-30kb with 5 bars of 3g, among other things. I would diligently take screenshots of every anomaly I saw, and store them on the phone. Restoring the phone to its factory state did not help.
After some time, I concluded there was still something wrong my IPhone, scheduled a Genius Bar appointment, and had it replaced with a brand new IPhone 3g. Having numerous screenshots of different problems minimized the explanations to a minimum.
    *IPhone 3G Model MB048LL, 2.0.1 firmware*
I had a chance to compare the new model with the previous one I had - the build felt a bit different. The screen on this new model has a slightly better contrast, too (compared default factory settings).
*The new model, however, has GREAT 3g reception*. Where with the previous model I had 2-3 bars of 3g, I now have 5 bars. The dbm numbers are also somewhat improved. I had a couple of small issues with apps, etc., but I figured them out - found which apps were crashing the system, and deleted them, cleaned up the old backups and the crash diagnostic crash reports from the previous model, etc. Finally all other problems I was having with the previous model are now gone, too, except the quirkiness of the GPS, but I suspect it's the new firmware, and not much I can do about it. I have yet to see a dropped call on this new model.
However this new model identified a new problem, something that I'd suspected for some time: it appears that the problems people are having could indeed be the combination of IPhone hardware/software and AT&T network.
I noticed the data speeds vary significantly throughout the day, even when you sit at the same desk. I noticed the speed drops significantly approximately during lunch time to ~90-300kb for download, would be ok during the day (~200-350kb for download), and would be AWESOME after 10pm - ~0.9 - 1.4Mbs.
One can make a conclusion here that AT&T simply does not have enough network capacity to handle the peak data load, when many people connect on the network. It could be that IPhone's software does not manage very well under such conditions, but I'd would place more blame on AT&T in this case, considering how exceptionally well IPhone performs during other times.
I'd like to point out that although both Apple and AT&T reps were genuinely trying to be helpful, I could clearly see that not one person I talked to on both sides did not have a clear solution how to resolve the problems I was having. Basically, I had to figure out what the problem could be, and use the resources available to try to solve it - be that replacing the phone, restoring from backups, monitoring the crash logs for problematic apps, etc.

I would constructively suggest that you edit your post pretty quickly if you want to avoid a highly deserved, verbal battering from every unemotional, highly rational and intelligent poster on this forum who might take offence to your demeaning attitude. I think to assume that because people who have posted on here have posted at all because they are emotional basket-cases, or in some way out of control of their emotions merely because they have aired their disappointment/disgust/anger with their sub-functioning iPhones is pretty insulting and undeserved. Whatever YOU have written here, or have experienced elsewhere, still only has the value of 1 (ONE). It is a poll of 1. It is an opinion of 1. No more valid than that, no more authority than that.

  • Ofcom wants to ban misleading broadband speed ads

Ofcom is seeking to stop internet service providers from advertising unrealistic broadband speeds.
Currently most ISPs advertise services as 'up to' a certain speed - for instance, 20Mbps (megabits per second).
But Ofcom's latest research finds that very few consumers actually get these headline speeds.
Ofcom's latest research into broadband speeds found that just 14% of customers on 'up to' 20Mbps services received speeds of over 12Mbps, while 58% averaged speeds of 6Mbps or less.
Cable and fibre services fared better, with 92% of V***** M**** customers on an 'up to' 50Mbps service averaging 45.6Mbps.
BT's Fibre-to-the-Cabinet technology, which is currently available to 15% of UK homes, has an average of 31.8Mbps on the 40Mbps service.
BT is not impressed with Ofcom's idea.
"We have real concerns with their approach. Broadband speeds vary from line to line and so it is meaningless to use one speed for advertising. That is why we use the term 'up to'," said John Petter, managing director of BT Retail.
He said he thought such a policy "would encourage digital exclusion rather than tackle it".
"Enforcing typical speed ranges is also dangerous as it could encourage more ISPs to cherry pick customers who will increase their average, leaving customers in rural and suburban areas under-served," he said.
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12611315
    -+-No longer a forum member-+-

I feel 'Up to' is acceptable, 'Maximum product speed' (with the usual caveats about line length, quality, etc) would be better when advertised alongside a minimum product speed guarantee, say 2Mb/s.
Far more pernicious are 'Unlimited' claims (which Ofcom/ASA are also investigating) - any service which is advertised as 'Unlimited' and has ARTIFICIAL constraints placed upon it is not unlimited!
Blaming users for actually using the product they have purchased and restricting 'heavy' users is disingenuous!  IF a package is described as unlimited then the available bandwidth should be shared equally between those users contending it rather than the more common 'you've exceeded your permitted bandwidth of this unlimited product... we're restricting you to speed X during peak times.'
Such restrictions are not for the benefit of the other customers... if memory serves, residential bandwidth is contended 50:1 (or thereabouts)... if the ISP has insufficient bandwidth to accomodate a serviceable connection to each of those users simultaneously that is the ISP's problem but which would they prefer to, potentially, lose?  A few 'heavy' users or fifty customers for having the audacity to expect some minimum level of service?

  • WRT150N Slow Win 7 Download Speed

My new Windows 7 desktop and laptop both have slow download speed over wireless, about 1mbps, hard wired they both run about 10mbps.  Upload they go 3mbps.  My 2 yr old Vista laptop can consistently get 10mbps wireless download.
I took the windows 7 laptop to Best Buy and they were able to run 7 mbps download.
I have played with all my Wireless Router settings based on searches I have performed here without success.  I'm guessing the WRT150N can't support something going on with Windows 7.
Anybody have a solution for this?
    Thanks

I had same prob.  Found this and it worked for me.  the only thing I changed were the transmission rate speeds under the advanced setting.  Mine only had 130 Mbps for the wirless N setting not 162 mbps, but it worked for me.  I hope it works for you.  I have been messing with this prob for weeks now.  Such a relief!!
Finally I have some success to write about.
After a few months of fiddling with settings and being very frustrated, I think I finally have hit upon something that appears to be working....for me, at least.
Yesterday, I talked with Linksys Support via LiveChat. They recommended that for the WRT150N router---on the Advanced Wireless Settings Tab, that I change the DTIM to 3, and the RTS Threshold and Fragementation settings to 2304.......and also change (RTS and Frag) them on the wireless card (WPC300N).
So, I did that and didn't notice any real improvement. My wireless reception--while the card says 'Excellent'--had speeds varying from 1Mbps to 216Mpbs...seemingly at random intervals.....no rhyme or reason.
Then I came across an obscure thread in some forum while Googling this topic. It recommended that you change your 'N Transmission Rate' to 162Mbps. Mine had been on AUTO, as was the regular 'Transmission Rate' for the "G" laptops on my network.
So I promptly changed both of those settings from AUTO to 54Mbps and 162Mbps respectively......and BINGO.....since I have done that, my speed from the card hasn't dropped lower than 108Mbps. It stays around 243Mbps and often will stay at 270Mbps when I am streaming something.
Don't know how long this will last, but its been the best 12 hours since I purchased the WRT150N and the WPC300N.
Hope this helps anyone else out there!
    Sincerely,
    Stan

  • Speed/connection/customer service

    Hi everyone,
I was thrilled to move to BT Infinity 2 unlimited but soon caught up with various problem including online  speed and vision speed. I have contacted help line but got no where. They were so un helpful and even did not bother to solved my problem. I  have filled form online for help twice but nobody got back to me. I have never experienced so bad customer service like BT. They even demanded £80 or £100 to re install my hub. What a joke. I wish I have never move to BT from Orange. Any way, I looked carefully and found that my infinity has not been set up correctly to start with and my speed varied through out the day and even struggle to get up to 31 mb . Since I am near to exchange I have been told to expect 80 mb. I felt betrayed and I am paying BT full subs for poor service. I have turned up to forum for help believing BT are only interested of my subscription.

  • Are we going to get a speed boost in the Spring?

According to PC Pro ( http://www.pcpro.co.uk/news/broadband/372577/bt-to-offer-300mbits-sec-fibre-on-demand ) we are going to be offered: "BT is set to boost the maximum download speed of FTTC lines from 40Mbits/sec to 80Mbits/sec this spring".  Can anyone verify this data?

    Spenty wrote:
Be very surprised if they charge extra, hardly anyone will pay extra if it's £5+ more a month. So they'd only make more from new customers.
Who can tell till there is an announcement, but this was spotted on ISpreview:
In addition Plusnet has also been taking part in BT's trial of 80Mbps (20Mbps uploads) FTTC (Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) technology, which will soon be made available to almost 40% of the UK. It's understood that PlusNet's technical trial has been running for two weeks and will be opened up to existing customers "from early February".
Dave Tomlinson, Plusnet's Product Team, said:
"We have so far seen maximum sync speeds of 80Mbps down and 20Mbps up with speedtest results coming in at a maximum of around 76Mbps. As with other DSL technologies the up to 80Mbps speeds are distance dependant, although it is distance between property and cabinet that counts rather than property and exchange. As such we have seen sync speeds vary from the mid 50s all the way up to the full 80Mbps, with a mean speed of about 68Mbps."
Those taking part in PlusNet's January FTTC trial will receive the faster service for no additional charge until 30th April. This suggests that Plusnet might be planning to offer a separate 80Mbps service at extra cost.
So it looks like part of the BT empire might be looking at charging a premium for it.

  • Speed issues result to HORRIBLE technician experience.

I have been having issues with my speeds (mainly my upload speeds) since Friday 06-19-2015.
Since the issue started my download speeds vary a small amount but nothing big.  My upload however....HUGE problem.
I am subscribed to the Blast 50 package which I was told would be 50Mbps down and 10Mbps up.
The techs I spoke with even confirmed for me that those speeds are guarenteed.
Before, I could test to servers all around the mid south with consistent good results.  Take note they were not all comcast servers.  They still did fine.
Now those same servers give me terrible upload results.
I understand that there are variables. However to drop from a consistent 12.9Mbps upload speed to a 1.5-2Mbps using the same servers as before is a problem.
I had some friends and my father (all comcast subscribers in the same area as me) do the same tests to the same servers and their outcome was great, no issues at all.  Just like mine was in the past.
I have tried talking to tech support who of course refreshed the signals and had me go over numerous tests again and again.
At first they didn't seem to want to help.  They seemed more concerned with selling me upgrades rather than fixing my issues.
Then they had me of course test to the closest server to me (same city I am in) and ignoring results from any of the other servers I tried to bring up.
Noting that even the server that's here is not giving me the same results as I would get before, but because they are over/at the expected 50Mbps down all is considered fine.
I finally got them to see results from another comcast server in my state that wasn't giving me the "passing" results (but it used to).
It wasn't until I started to really push that and the big issue wasn't my download speeds so much but my upload speeds (upload speeds are crucial for me) they started to get a little more involved.
Finally after some more tests they tell me that they do see an issue and they were going to escalate my problem.
Sunday 06-21-2015 I get a call from another tech who said they were from the comcast advanced technical support office who wanted to do tests (the same ones I did before) and
of course refresh the signals.  He also told me that he saw an issue.  Told me to wait 24 hours and test the speeds again.  The waiting 24 hour message to me just seemed like an out.
However the following day they did call me back to see if the issues were resolved.  They weren't.  So they scheduled a tech to visit Thursday 06-25-2015 between 8am-12pm.
Now the fun part begins.  I take the morning off Thursday 06-25-2015 which isn't easy for me to do.  I get no call ahead of time from the tech who comes out.
The tech just shows up and NEVER introduced himself to us, just walked right in.
He had an attitude from the very beginning.  Even told me it was "pointless to be here and a waste of time".  He didn't even bother listening to my problems or anything.
Telling me because my results were "passing" to the comcast server in my city I don't need to test to any of the others and the results are irrelevant.
He ran one test to check the carriers and that was it.  After his test my download speeds were not capped off at the set limit for Blast 50 internet anymore.
I am getting higher download speeds now (I'll explain this a little later).
While he was here I tried explaining to him that I noticed the cable for my house running up to the pole at the street has pulled loose and is just hanging off the pole.
Since to me it looks like it is close to the tap I wondered if it may have stressed the connection at the tap. So I asked him if he could just double check.
He tells me "it doesn't matter" and that "it wont affect anything". He never once acted like he wanted to do his job.  He was very unprofessional and overall rude the ENTIRE time he was here (which wasn't very long less than 10min).
He didn't want to bother actually checking to find any issues he just wanted to leave.  I mean as he said from the moment he stepped foot in my house, to him it was "a waste of his time".
It was also a waste of mine.  It was extremely infuriating and unacceptable.
Later Thursday evening I talked to another comcast tech that's out of state.  He looked over everything he could and told me that some how my modem config was pushed to the high tier speeds.
So right off the bat I should be getting at least 105Mbps down ... not the 88Mbps that's showing up.  That was a big red flag to him.  He also told me my upload speeds should be A LOT better.  Yet another red flag.
He then ran the health of my modem and told me the problem he saw was on the Upstream Rx Power.  Two errors there.  One red and one orange. That I definitely have an issue.  He asked me to check and make sure the cable was screwed in tightly from the wall to the modem (it is).
Also asked me if there were any splitters (there is not any that I'm aware of).  The line I have is dedicated solely to my main computer and that is it.  No other devices share the line.
After checking that stuff off he explains to me that it's beyond my control. That now I need another tech who cares to come out to check everything.  He felt that it could be a bad fitting, bad tap, or even a bad drop.
He also advised that the cable be checked to see if it is the correct size since my property is around an acre and a half to the house.
He said for sure something is wrong and he was very sorry for the previous techs attitude.
There is an issue for sure.  I can feel it, see it and it's a problem for me.  It's not the way it was before.
I pay for a service and expect good results.  What I have been getting since Friday 06-19-2015 is not what I pay for.
I am getting really tired of all the issues that comcast has created for me.
From a whole month of ordeals just to get it installed, cutting my phone line when they were burying the cable, the non-stop dancing on the phone, and now this.
It's getting very old and I haven't even had it a year yet.  I wonder sometimes if its even worth it.
I would like to get this issue resolved. Also if a tech needs to come out, I refuse to have the tech that showed up 06-25-2015 to come back to my property.

    Thanks for the tips.

  • GPRS/Edge/3G connection speed?

    Hi,
i was using my "vodafone mobile" internet for few weeks now and all that time i was thinking: why it's so slow? Ok, I realize that speed depends on signal strength and things, but signal quality is 110% here and I get only 4.4kBps (only GPRS available). I know that GPRS should give me something around 10kBps. I've found some information on google about this, people use setserial to set port speed, but then i try it i get an error:
    # setserial /dev/ttyUSB0 spd_warp
Cannot get serial info: Invalid argument
    Why is this happening?
    I'm running a custom kernel (2.6.21.1)
    Thanks for your answers.
    Cheers,
    PsD

The speeds gotten from mobile connections can very a lot over time.
One of the factors you have no influence on is the amount of users that are trying to use the same connection.
I've seen download speeds ranging from .5 kbytes to 7 kbytes on gprs, while connection speed was 57600 baud.
Yes, I know these and understand that speed vary a lot. But I'm worried about maximum speed that I get - 4.2-4.4kBps.
