Split track audio glitch

Hello all,
Just switched from FCP7 to PP 2014. A lot of my video work deals with split track delivery and post. In FCP 7 I would bring in a Pro Res file and have the left track on audio track 1 and right track on audio track 2.
In Premiere 2014, I learned how to replicate this. The problem is that when I pan track 1 all the way to the left I get major distortion on my second track. When I pan the second track (right Channel) to the right the distortion continues. We have two edit suites and I was able to replicate this on both systems.
I thought it was a Pro Res issue, but turns out that I was able to replicate this using PP's own color bar generator. I also experimented with other sequence settings like 29.97 vs. 59.94.
Here's how to do it:
1. In PP go File>New>Bars and Tone. Hit Ok to create this file.
2. In the Project bin, right click on the Bars and Tone and select Modify>Audio Channels...
3. Set number of audio tracks to "2" and Channel format to "Mono".
4. drop into a timeline and pan track one to the left. You should hear distortion on the right or 2nd audio track. Pan the 2nd track to the right and its the same.
The odd thing is that if I pan everything to 99%  either way, all is good on both tracks.
I called Adobe and was told that they would look into this as they could not replicate this. I was told I would get a call back in 15 min. 3 hours later I am here sending this out to the community.
This is something that needs to be fixed if I am to use PP at all. Anyone else able to replicate? I am open to any ideas as I have gone through all the settings that I know of. Also, I tried turning off OpenCL with the same results.
Additional issue I found is audio level jumping up when another track comes in. I have a stereo track of music play on track 1. A little into the song I place another audio mono track on audio track 2. I pan the Stereo track to the left and Mono track to the right. When I hit play, the music is at say -12db. Once the playhead hits the mono track, the stereo track jumps up in level even though the mono track is panned to that side.
Thanks,
Jeremy

i'm experiencing the same issue since today.
very loud (nearly ear damaging) glitches on crossfades on audio channel. doesn't matter if mp3, aif, or wav.
plus one channel of stereo sometimes randomly gets louder on transitions for a short time.
is still there in export. no matter if directly from premiere or via media encoder. (export as prores 422 with uncompressed audio). disabled native ppro import in AME, didn't help
cleared all media caches and preview files, didn't help.
not using preview files for export.
read alot about this bug being in older version here on the forums, but it is still there in CC 2014 v8.0.1

  • Split Track Audio Output Problem

I'm trying to make a split track audio output as one requirement of the deliverables list on my current job. Dialog goes left, music right.
But even though I set up my sequence as two track mono, and have pre-panned the tracks all the way to the left (A1) and right (A2), I seem unable to make a quicktime that will play them as discrete tracks.
Inside Premiere, they play back properly -- A1 is coming out of the left speaker, A2 out of the right. No bleed or overlap.
I'm exporting them as quicktime, 2 mono tracks, ProRes 422. But when I play back the resulting quicktime -- voila, the tracks have been re-mixed together without my consent!
I've tried Media Encoder, with the same results.
FYI, In the "Channel Layout" section I've tried clicking both "mono" and "discrete" without any improvement. I feel like the problem might be that I'm choosing "Stereo" from the "Channels" popup, but there is no option for two channels that are not in stereo. It goes from mono to stereo to 3.
Any suggestions would be most welcome. Especially if they arrive soon!  : )

  • Split track audio in Premiere CS5

    Greetings all,
I'm getting acclimated to working in Premiere CS5 after years of editing on Avid Media Composer and Symphony.  There are of course similarities and differences, some of which I can figure my way through and others where I'll need to ask for help.  Here's one.
Suppose I have a piece of video that was shot split-track.  On channel 1 we have the lavaliere mic worn by an interview subject.  On channel 2 we have the on-camera mic so while searching I can hear the interviewer's questions which aren't so audible in the interviewee's mic.  In the final edit I wish to discard channel 2 and center-pan channel 1.  On an Avid the audio channels are on separate tracks on the timeline - you can literally remove the channel 1 or channel 2 audio clip and then use a pan tool to take the remaining audio clip and pan it as desired (typically center-pan is what you want with an interviewee but in fact you have infinite choices between full-left and full-right).
How do we approach this issue in Premiere?  I'm sure this has been addressed before but after a lot of searching I guess I don't know the correct search terms to find it.
Thanks in advance for any insight.
    Peter

    Thanks Colin (and Jim).
It's amazing how wedded one becomes to a particular way of working, and how unusual it feels (after nearly 20 years) to start using a different platform.
For anyone who has NOT used Avid (the Meridian and pre-Meridian versions, anyway): imported materials are literally split up into components and stored/handled separately; thus, video ends up in a video file and each audio track ends up in a separate mono .wav or .aiff file, so when they're brought into a sequence they are quite literally individual and totally independent tracks.  One major disadvantage of that generation of Avid is that materials need to be imported and reprocessed into Avid media; they don't come in natively.  Newer generations of Avid (I believe) have improved this.
Premiere's handling of native clips, where stereo audio is just that instead of individual and independent tracks, is an alien concept that takes getting used to.  Modifying the clip to treat audio channels as "mono" is exactly what I was looking for.  The "fill left" and "fill right" effects, while they would work, seem a little bit more limiting.
Thanks, incidentally, for not saying "RTFM."  I have the download of CS5 and there ISN'T a FM nor can I find pdf FMs as an additional download anywhere.  So I'm stuck with tutorials (none of which seem to cover this) and the help files (which don't cover this unless you already know the name of the function).  My oh my do I miss software suites with complete read-'em-in-the-tub printed manuals!
    Thanks again,
    Pete

  • Split Track Audio

Ever need to provide the client (networks most often) with a split track master of your show...with Stereo mix on Ch1 and Ch2, and Music and Effects on Ch 3 and Ch 4? Well, here is how you do that:
    http://proapptips.com/tips/article.php?story=20060721234257115
This really only works if you have a capture card. This will not work over firewire.
    Shane

Ah...thanks Jerry. I forgot about that. Never tried it because of the yuckiness. If you care to share how to do that (iffin you know) I will add that to the tip.
You know, I got my monitor...but the HD/SDI card wasnt' installed, and it required that the motherboard be replaced with the one supplied. So I took it to Sony and they installed it for free. Woo! But then I bring it home and connect it to my Decklink HD, and can only get an SD signal out of the card. So I move the card to the other slot and turn on the monitor and...and...nothing. No power. So, back to the shop it goes.
Man I have bad luck with equiment.

  • How do I create a split track audio recording (2 outputs)?

I am trying to create a two-output track for use with IEM and house sound (right channel with some instrument tracks to house; left channel with click & choral voices to IEM only). I don't know how to assign the output to L or R in Express. I've seen some online answers in Pro, but they don't work the same.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't want to have to think about instrument numbers when I'm creating music.
"Create with next" requires you to:
    1) Highlight the last used instrument (highest by number)
    2) Have another (n+1) instrument ready to go in your Environment
If you fail at step #1, you'll get a duplicate, and if you fail at #2, you'll get some other type of track entirely (maybe a bus, a master fader, etc.)
Maybe I'm old-fashioned or something, but when I want a fresh track, I just want a fresh track... I don't want to have to think about existing track numbers, or the state of the Environment That's why I use "Create" and "Create Multiple," and I haven't found much use for "Create with next."
But, hey, really, I'm glad it works for someone!

  • Split track Export Issue

    Hello,
    Computer: Mac OS 10.95 -  I-Mac Processor 3.4 GHz Intel Core I7, 32GB 1333 MHz DDR3, AMD Radeon HD 6970M 2048 MB
This is extremely frustrating since creating Split Track Audio files in both Final Cut and AVID are pretty much straight forward.  However, Adobe Premiere's workflow has quite a few additional and somewhat unclear steps that in my personal opinion I think there should be an update where (similar to final cut) you ASSIGN each Audio Track in the Sequence Timeline along with a simple change preferences "8 tracks audio" etc... instead of the loop around workflow you have to go through.  Lately I've been seeing numerous errors and bugs and glitches and flaws in the Adobe Premiere system (along with the creative cloud where there's a new glitch when your purchased software becomes a 'free trial')  but that's a different story.   Moving on....
I have created a Split Track Audio Workflow and it appears to be inefficient due to the final export.
Here are the Steps I have:
    1. Create a NEW Sequence and set it for the BELOW settings:
On the TRACKS tab - In New Sequence dialog window, choose 'Custom' then go to 'Tracks' tab. Master should be set “Multichannel”, and Number of Channels “4”. (or 8 if that's what you want).
Once The sequence is made and the previous sequence is copied to the new timeline that has the split tracks.  Open up Audio Mixer to select the tracks:
Once Everything has been checked off it's time for the FINAL EXPORT.
Here's where the ISSUE takes place:
    1. On Different COMPUTERS using the SAME EXACT Up to date Version of Adobe Premiere the Export Options in the Audio Settings Change.
    See Attached Images:
Problematic Version - Notice no "Audio Layer Track" Option:
Preferred Export Setting with "Audio Layer Track" Option:
What is causing this?  And what would be the appropriate option to troubleshoot this to make these steps as simple as possible?  Is there a step I am missing?
    Thank You.

Ronin Edits I completely agree with you!  I mean I remember Adobe Premiere back in 2001 and I am impressed with their improvements over the years including the whole creative cloud feature etc...  I've always preferred Adobe Photoshop as their "top of the line" but all of the other programs have a lot of work to do.
I mean for instance what you said up there is not a simple solution for the everyday person who is in a rush and cannot think of extra workarounds in order to have a final master.  With this day in age everything is happening now at the speed of light that no one has time to do things the traditional way.  Times are definitely changing so I'm doing my best to pick up the pace and find a standardized (semi-fair) solution.
For Example Final Cut Pro > This is perhaps the easiest/best option to select individual tracks for Split tracks or/and Surround Sound Audio.  Don't get me wrong there's been several bugs with this program/system but FCP 7 has been one of the best (aside from AVID).  FCP X not so sure about.
I truly agree that Adobe is only trying to beat their competitors and launching how it is despite the bugs and flaws that they still haven't fully developed and figured out.
I've tried the cleaner tool and every time it has been used it's always been unsuccessful for me and the other members in the studio that I work in.
Adobe Premiere has numerous amounts of bugs including the "Media Pending" issue when it comes to reading and "supporting" (quotes there for a reason) .mts workflows.
There's also the mysterious "Get Trial version" bug where a complete uninstall/reinstall has to happen.
Unfortunately with this day in age there's not much time for these flaws to happen.
Thanks for your feedback since it looks like there's no exact conclusion/reason why this is happening, I will do an uninstall/reinstall on a few computers and check out the export settings and choose the "4 channels or more" of audio along with export as mono tracks in order for each Audio track to be exported on at their own channel.
The option (that's apparently removed) for "Single Tracks" was a great feature that should have not been removed....ever.

  • Split track movies

    Howdy,
already posted this over at LogicPro Help, apologies if I'm boring anyone.
I work in tv composing, and frequently get sent split track movies (temp music on one side, everything else on the other).
My current monitors (old Genelec 1029s) have a handy power stitch on the front, so I can switch off the temp side, and listen to my cue (in mono) in situ. But my new monitors (KH120s) have the power switch at the back.
So I was wondering, how do people deal with their split track qts? I know I can extract audio, but that seems too time consuming, as I start a new project for every cue, and its a nightmare lining up the audio every time. And I don't want the movie audio coming through the main outs.
Am I missing something really easy?
I guess I could pull a cable out of the duet each time, but that doesn't seem very elegant...
    Thanks in advance

To mute the speaker in OSX, use the Audio Midi Setup app. There you can mute the left or right channel separately.
However, I wonder why you are not extracting the audio from the video. This is basic scoring workflow.
You do it only once when you start a show and each new cue is just a "save as" copy of the previous cue (project) so the video/audio track is already in place.
Once in Logic, You click-hold on the output icon (the double circle) and you can just select the left or right channel. I usually create two audio tracks with same copy of the split track audio file and have one selected to play only the left channel (dialog) and the other one to play the right channel (temp). Now they are technically two independent mono track (that you can pan left to right)
This gives you complete mixing controls (if you have an external controller) for this tracks: solo, mute, eq, etc. Sometimes the production track has problems that you can fix (with automation) so it doesn't bother you when scoring with the dialog.
Screener. Don't you have to make screeners, little quicktime files of you cues to send to the director/producer for approval? Having the dialog on a track in your project, you can quickly make a decent mix, even for your own show reel.
Routing. Usually I have the dialog and temp tracks routed directly to a different channel on my audio interface, so it doesn't go through my master bus. This way they don't show up on the bounce and don't mess up my meters that I monitor constantly. Just for the export video procedure, I route them to the master bus.
    Hope that helps

  • Playing split track as mono

I am a choir director and I use my ipod daily for classroom use. I have a lot of performance CD's that are split track (voices on one side, instruments on the other). Is there any way to change the settings on my ipod to play just one side of the split track? I am only using a single speaker, so unplugging one speaker, will not solve my problem. I have looked under the EQ settings and could not find a balance anywhere.

  • Whenever I Split and Audio Track, it stops playing

    Ok,
Been using imovie 11 for a few weeks. For the first couple weeks, i had no problem splitting an audio track into many pieces to adjust the volume on each piece.  Now, regardless of the project, whenever i split an audio track, neither part will play.  When i hit command-Z to put it back together, it plays with no problem, then if i try to resplit it, no volume.
I tried a new project, very simple --  1 video clip, dragged the audo track to a point in the video and as long as i dont split it it works.
I do not have beat-sync on.
    any help is appreciated!
    thank you

  • Audio Glitch When Exporting Movie Files in iMovie

I've split ambient audio from my footage and restriped a music track over. When I playback within iMovie, it's fine. But when I export the movie out, the are still remnants of the original audio in the playback. How do I get rid of this glitch?

Is it possible that you are running iMovie 09 (which is Version 8.0.6)?
There is a glitch in iMovie 09 where if you use sped changes (fast motion and slow motion) and choose custom percentages like 38%, 59%, 133%, it will cause unpredictable audio artifacts when you share.
THe solution is to change all your speed changes to one of the presets, like 25%, 50%, 100%, 150%, 200%, 400%, etc. These are the tick marks on the slider.

  • How can I display & split the audio & video from the same digitized clip?

I digitized a scene into iMovie that I edited on a professional system which I don't have access to anymore. The whole scene is 1 clip. Now I see a few tweaks that I want to make, so I was hoping to do them in iMovie.
I want to "pull up" the audio in one section - meaning I want to take cut about 20 frames of audio from the end of a shot, and then move all the other audio up to fill the hole. To compensate for the missing 20 frames, I'll cut video off the head of the next shot. Some call this prelapping. Some call it an L-cut. Some call it asymmetrical trimming. Either way, I can't figure out how to do it in iMovie.
My clip appears in the timeline as one track - a single track that contains the video and 2 audio tracks. How can I display the audio that's tied to the video on its own track? Then I think I could split audio & video wherever I wanted and trim things up - but I can't figure out how to do it.
Am I asking too much of this software?
BTW, I never see the option to "Split audio clip at playhead". I'm not displaying clip volume or waveforms. Choosing to display waveforms doesn't show me anything. Maybe iMovie thinks I'd only want to see waveforms of audio that isn't tied to my video-and-audio clips?
Thanks in advance for any help...

    Jordon,
"Am I asking too much of this software?"
    No, you're not.
You first want to select your clip(s) and choose Advanced>Extract Audio.
This will copy the audio from the video clip and place it on one of the two separate audio tracks while lowering the audio level to zero in the original video track.
You can now edit and move the audio independently of the video.
With the audio clip selected, you'll find you now have access to Edit>Split Selected Audio Clip at Playhead.

  • Will Soundtrack Pro allow me to master multi-track audio CD?

Please help! I have been looking for the past 4 days for a multi-track audio editing software that will allow me to burn multiple tracks to a CD. Here's what I'm trying to do: I have a 45 minute message and I want to fade a song in at the beginning, and another song fading out at the end. Then I want to place markers every 10 minutes, split into separate tracks, and burn the whole thing to CD from within that software (possibly I can fudge on this last one by exporting each individual track to iTunes, then making a playlist, but if Soundtrack Pro or some other program can do it all, then that is what I prefer!)
I tried Audacity, and it was close to what I wanted, but when I exported into iTunes the last 20 seconds of every song dropped audio! I have also tried the following and these are the errors/difficulties I encountered:
    • Amadeus II : No multi-track mixing capability
    • Cacophony: kept crashing, multiple error messages
    • Jasmine: unique tape-style interface, but again, no multi-track export
    • Sound Studio 3: good interface, easy marking, but no sound after export
    • Snd Sampler: only one sound can be open at a time
    • Deck LE: wouldn't even open one of my audio files!
So now my attention is on Soundtrack Pro and Logic Pro. Both of these seem like they will have what I need, but I'm going to have to fork over a pretty penny. Which is better and will either do multi-track mixing to CD?
Thank you so much to anyone who will read through my whole ordeal and help me out with their musical expertise and sound audio advice!
    Sincerely,
    Paul

    Hello,
I thank you both for the help you've given, and I have obtained STP and really enjoy using it, but I am still disappointed that it will not allow me to master multiple tracks. For instance in Audacity, there is the export multiple command that splits one long song up according to the markers that you placed and then exports them as several different files. In STP, this same process is amazingly difficult, you have to take the razor tool, cut each section, drag it down to another track, then put a stop song marker after the cut section, then select each track and "export selected". (Do you know of an easier way?) Now for a $1200 dollar program that is just a little bit ridiculous, why cannot Apple just have a command to export by markers? Where can I go to request this feature be implemented?
Here's an example of what I am looking for, with features such as Redbook CD mastering (but this software is too buggy)

  • Audio Glitches on Timeline, but not when played in QT?

I had a client send me his project on a harddrive.
They exported a .mov file from FCP and it has no audio glitches when played with Quicktime.
But if i drag that file to a timeline and watch it through my DSR-25 to a NTSC monitor, it has audio glitches in certain spots.
Always at that spot though and if i watch the file in Quicktime, it plays fine.
All audio was exported originally out of FCP using Quicktime Movie with 48khz, 16 bit stereo so nothing needed to be rendered.
Seems like it has something to do with it going over via firewire through my DSR-25.
Has anyone else had this problem.
I can't make a Master DVCam tape for this master because of these audio glitches.
    Thanks for any help,
    Brian

I read a post about a user having this same sort of issue.
He said when he turns off his video layer, in my case just V1, the audio played fine.
    Same with mine.
So it seems to be an issue with the video track playing with the audio track.
If i export it and bring it back in, will it just create that same audio glitch?
Guess i will have to try.
Anyone have this issue or similiar?
    Thanks,
    Brian

  • Audio Glitch in Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 Timeline (not a clip problem - it's the timeline space)

I have an audio glitch that appears to be tied to a space in my timeline and not to a certain audio clip.  If I drag or move the audio clip further up or down the timeline it plays fine.  If I move a different audio file into this area, the audio drops out in the same area, even with volumes set where they need to be.  There are absolutely no keyframes set in this area and I want to be clear about that.   However, this issue did come up only the software froze on me as I was loading my project.  I believe my best bet is to delete delete my media cach and media cache files so that clips are reconformed... unless someone has additional input or has experienced similar issue with the sound.
As a note, I also reinstalled Quicktime.  I am working with AVI files/aac auio codec.

No. You will not find any Master Track Keyframes. These will be on the Audio Track, and will be attached to the Track, regardless of what Clip you have there. Here is a look at Track Keyframes, not to be confused with Clip Keyframes from PrPro 2.0:
Hope that this helps and good luck,

  • Serious audio glitch problem in 9.1.1 - please help!

Got a problem with audio glitching that is driving me insane - hopefully someone can help (please! :_))
I'm on Logic 9.1.1 on a recent MacPro using 10.5.8, 12Gb memory. I've created an arrangement in Logic with two multi timbral / multi-output instruments (Kontakt and Stylus RMX - both up to date versions) with aux outputs for all of the instruments channels; 16 in the case of Kontakt, 8 in the case of RMX.
I'll work with this setup and after a while I find that whenever I play and then press stop, a tiny portion of audio will repeat rapidly, over and over again in the 'master' left output channel at +6.0dB - it also shows up on all the instrument auxes at a much lower level. It's as if Aphex Twin has invaded my Mac... Weirdly, this problem crops up even if I'm not outputting anything from the multi-instruments - it's enough that say, an EXS instrument, plays something, I'll press stop, and then the glitch signal will appear in all the level meters of the multi instruments and master output, but not on the EXS level meter. If I press play again, the glitch disappears and audio playback is perfect - it only happens when stop is pressed. And no sign of it if there's a silent part in the arrangement with no tracks playing anything.
If I have any instances of reverb on bus channels, that audio will will also feed into the left channel of those busses, even when there are no channel strips sending to them. Weird as ****, and driving me up the wall with frustration.
I've omitted it being down to my audio interface (Metric Halo 2882) as the problem persists if I switch to the Mac internal I/O.
I'm trying to work through this at the mo as I've got a deadline for 2pm this afternoon - but I'm worried I might not make it due to throwing my feckin computer out the window. Please help - thanks!

If your deadline wasn't looming, I'd say buss everything to a stereo track and record this stuff. It sounds great, you could use it in another project later...
But to your problem: The only quick solution I can think of for you to try is to create a brand new fresh project and use the selective track import feature to bring your tracks into the new project. Don't start from an old template (that you may still be using since Logic 8 or something) because this could indeed be the root of the problem. Build a new template from Logic 9.1.1, then make a new project from that and import all your tracks. If it's your project that's corrupted somehow, this could be the trick to solve it, and it won't take too long to try, so it's worth a shot.
I'm not sure of this, but something is telling me I've seen this problem before, and if so it was on Leopard (not Snow Leopard) on a MacPro in the studio. Have never had it on my personal MBP (which was only ever Tiger and then Snow Leopard - I skipped Leopard on purpose because the studio machines seemed so very dicey). Also, I don't use RMX on my own machine but in the studio, yes. Same deal for multiple output instruments, I rarely do that either. On that point, another thing you could try is to forget about multiple outs for now, and just work with stereo instances. Yes I realize this will mess up your entire painstakingly built-up mix.. but if this is causing the flakiness you may have no choice but to go back to stereo instances, finish your writing, then do the whole mute/solo thing to bounce your individual parts to audio and proceed from there. In this scenario, selective track import will be a timesaver too because once you've done all the bouncing, you can just create a new project and import all of your channel strips and so on, to then re-assign the individually bounced tracks to the assignments you had before. Will be quicker to recreate your mix than having to do it from scratch. Or you might not even need to do this step because if eliminating the multi-out instruments makes the prob go away, then you can just recreate your assignments within the same project using the bounced audio tracks.
    Get to it.
Once you've delivered.. I'd open that project again and record all of that lovely Aphex Twin messiness for later use.
