Spotlight search cannot begin with "a"

If I type a search in the Spotlight field which begins with "a" (or is simply that single letter), the progress icon (rotating lines) never stops spinning, and the mds process eats up all available physical memory, as well as writing gigabytes worth of bogus data to disk as virtual memory.
Pressing "esc" to clear the text entered causes the mds process to return to normal.
For example, if I type "activity" (looking for activity monitor) into the Spotlight search field, the lines will spin indefinitely and mds will do what I describe above. *However, typing "bactivity" and then using arrow keys to delete the starting 'b', leaving "activity" in the search field, gives a NORMAL search where the rotating lines disappear and correct results are given, with no mds problems.*
Words starting with any letter other than 'a' return normal search results and do not cause mds to spiral out of control.
What on earth might be causing this? (I have rebuilt the Spotlight index twice already, to no avail.)

Glad to know I'm not the only one!
Now I am only having the 'a' problem intermittently.
I tried doing two things... (bad science, I know, as now I'm not sure which one actually helped).
1.) I changed the permissions of the Applications folder (/Applications). For some reason my account didn't have read+write permissions on that folder. I added myself as having read/write permissions. Check using cmd-i on the folder in finder, at the bottom -- "sharing and permissions".
2.) I reindexed my Applications folder by adding it to the Spotlight exclude list, then removing it from that list (and then rebooted).

    Hi,
    I suggest you take the code below which works in my environment to do the test again:
    ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext("http://sp/");
    List list = clientContext.Web.Lists.GetByTitle("List2");
    FieldCollection fields = list.Fields;
    clientContext.Load(fields);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();

    var fieldSchema = "<Field Type='Calculated' DisplayName='" + displayName + "' ResultType='Text'><Formula>" + formula + "</Formula></Field>";
    fields.AddFieldAsXml(fieldSchema, true, AddFieldOptions.DefaultValue);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();
    Feel free to reply if the issue still exists.

  • XmlException on ExecuteQuery - Name cannot begin with the ' ' character, hexadecimal value 0x20. Line 78, position 36.

    I'm getting XmlException when trying to call ExecuteQuery of the ClientContext.
    I'm getting this no matter what I'm trying to load and no matter what site I'm trying to connect to.
    This happens when connecting to Office365 site (tried multiple tenants and site collections).
    What's strange I'm getting this on one PC (Windows Server 2008 R2 without SharePoint installed), but not on another VM (Windows Server 2012 with SharePoint 2013 installed).
    This used to work on both in the past.
    Could it be that one of the windows updates broke it?
    Just for reference the test code is very simple and I'm calling it from a console app (same result on .NET 4.0, 4.5 and 4.5.1):
    static void ConnectTest(string username, string password, string url)
    SecureString securePassword = new SecureString();
    foreach (char c in password)
    securePassword.AppendChar(c);
    SharePointOnlineCredentials onlineCredentials = new SharePointOnlineCredentials(username, securePassword);
    using (ClientContext clientContext = new ClientContext(url))
    clientContext.Credentials = onlineCredentials;
    Web site = clientContext.Web;
    clientContext.Load(site);
    clientContext.ExecuteQuery();

    I faced with this exeption becouse of OpenDNS.
    You can try the following:
    1. Use another DNS server. (prefered solution)
    or
    2. Add the following in C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts:
    157.56.58.43 msoid.YourSharePointName.onmicrosoft.com
    (157.56.58.43 it's a one of msoid.onmicrosoft.com ips you can resolve it yourself)
    for example if you SharePoint online url is org1.sharepoint.com you should add in hosts:
    157.56.58.43 msoid.org1.onmicrosoft.com

    Hi MegaJuzwa,
    Based on your description, it seems that it is not the VS IDE usage issue, am I right? If so, I'm afriad that it is not the correct forum for this issue.

  • I installed a new bigger hard drive and now spotlight does not work with outlook to search for emails

    My old hard drive was full so I went to an apple authorized provider to install a new bigger hard drive. They also moved the data and applications from my old drive to the new one. They did not use time capsule because their way was faster. After the installation I did have to reenter the product code key for Office 2011 for the Mac. However, now I find that I cannot do email spotlight searches in Outlook. When I put in the search - it comes up with no results. This is true no matter what the search. Any ideas of how to point spotlight to look in the email folders so I can do searches again. This is a feature I use daily - so I am concerned that I have lost this feature. Also, I am noticing that alot of the settings did not carry over to the new hard drive. Any help is greatly appreciated!

    I would recommend starting over and migrate using your Time Capsule backup however DO NOT do it wirelessly, connect using an Ethernet Connection. If you upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard then follow the instructions in this video, the kid is annoying but he knows what he's doing. Clean Install Of Snow Leopard video. Once you have installed and updated Snow Leopard then update using the 10.6.8 Update Combo, then log into the Mac App Store and re-install Lion and all it's updates. My guess this is an afternoons work.

    When I go to play a movie, I get prompted that the original file cannot be found.  When I do a search on spotlight it cannot be found, but it does appear in my purchases.  How do I re-download when it does not appear that it is allowed?

    Hello paddyrb154,
    Thank you for the details of the issue you are experiencing with your purchased movie in iTunes on your iMac.  It sounds like iTunes thinks the movie is on your computer, but it is not located in the iTunes Media folder.
    For an issue like this, I recommend deleting the movie from iTunes and downloading it from the iTunes Store again.  Use these steps to delete the movie:
    Mac or PC
    Launch iTunes.
    From the Library pop-up menu, choose Movies.
    Click Movies in the navigation bar.
    Click the movie you want to delete.
    Press the Delete key on your keyboard.
    In iTunes 11, the movie cover art will remain visible, but a cloud icon will appear on it to allow you to download the item again (in countries that support this).
    How to delete content you've downloaded from the iTunes Store, App Store, iBooks Store, or Mac App Store
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5772
    Once you have deleted the movie, you can click on the cloud icon to download the movie again.  If you do not see the cloud icon, use the steps in the section titled “Download previous purchases on Mac or PC ” in the following article to download the movie from your list of past purchases in the iTunes Store:
    Download past purchases

  • Searching work servers with Spotlight

    Having issues with Spotlight, it seems to be working fine locally but cannot retrieve the files and folders required from any servers that we have in our office, which is frustrating when looking for older files on our Archive etc...
    Is there a preference that I need to click on to allow this?
    Any help would be appreciated,
    Thanks.
    G5 Apple Mac   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    First of all, Tiger's Spotlight technology is not intended for Window servers. (See below)
    Spotlight Support for Network Homes
    "Perform a Spotlight search on network-based Home directories in addition to searching local hard drives."
    Leopard will expand to search on servers running Mac OS X Leopard Server. http://www.apple.com/macosx/leopard/spotlight.html
    "The Spotlight store retains information that the plug-ins extract in two separate indexes: one for metadata and the other for content. This provides important performance benefits, because Spotlight doesn’t waste time looking through its massive content index unless specifically requested. Each index is created on a per-volume basis, which means each disk or partition carries its own set of indexes for the information on that volume.
    Spotlight works with most locally mounted volumes that can be read and written to, including FireWire and USB/ flash drives. Some volumes, such as Windows-formatted drives, are not indexed automatically. You can change this easily by opening the Info window for the volume in the Finder." http://images.apple.com/macosx/pdf/MacOSXSpotlightTB.pdf
    For sure if you are searching network drives, use Command-f and make sure that the drive (volume) you are searching in is shared (connected) and selected. Keep in mind that the volume you are searching in may not be indexible, e.g., CDs, but can be searched using the (old) Find command.

  • Fix for SOLR searches beginning with wildcard?

    All, I am having problems finding clear answers on if the above was corrected in ColdFusion 10.
    I can't get my head around the idea of SOLR not allowing search criteria to begin with a wildcard.  I've seen a solution for reverse wildcard searching, which is great as long as I specify criteria for which I know the ending letters.  For example, if I am looking for all entries ending in "ing", I could do a search on "*ing", using the reverse wildcard to find "gni*".  I have yet to see, or come up with, a solution for a SOLR search with wildcards in the start and end of the criteria.  For example, lets say I am looking for any word with "fus" in the middle, such as "confusing" or "perfusing" or "profusely".  I would want to do a search such as "*fus*".  From what I understand thus far, this cannot be done in SOLR?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    ColdFusion will support whatever Apache solr supports as it is the underlying engine we are using.
    And Solr does support it: http://lucene.apache.org/solr/api/org/apache/solr/analysis/ReversedWildcardFilterFactory.h tml
    I think this is an egregious hack, but still, it's the way they've chosen to support it.
    Solr technically disables support of leading wildcards by default in the traditional query parsers due to concerns about query performance since it tends to select a large percentage of indexed terms.
    Be that as it may, this should be my decision, as the maintainer of the index, not your decision to blanketly disallow it.  If it's available, then one can use it if one choses, or not use it for the reasons you cite.  If you blanketly disallow it, you're removing the ability for me to make that decision.
    It's also a bit of a backwards compat issue, innit?  Verity allowed leading wildcards.

  • I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it

    I accidentally quit my CC on my Macbook pro and now the cloud icon is grayed out and every time I hover over it with the mouse I get the spinning beach ball of death on the icon. I have no idea how to open it because when I use spotlight search to open it it gives me a message saying "Creative Cloud is not open anymore" help!

    Since you didn't include any pertinent info such as the Mac model and OS version you are running, here is some general information:
    Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup
    Depending on which OS yours came with originally - and which OS you are now running - you would either need your original install disks - you can call Apple for replacements by giving them your serial number. Or you may be able to reinstall the OS by using recovery (again, depends on which model/which OS).

  • Why is my spotlight search slow/unresponsive in IOS 7... specifically when I start the search with the letters "n" or "c".

    I have an iPhone 5 that must be just over a year old now. I don't remember exactly when this problem started, but I think it was right after updating to IOS 7. The problem is that with certain searches, such as "chrome" or "calender", the spotlight search will basically do nothing. It is somewhat random. Sometimes it will work imidiatly as I am typing it like it usually did. But other times, I will write out the whole word, press search, and still nothing will come up.
    As I was just testing it now, I came up with an interesting discovery. I tested every letter of the alphabet and while 24 of them immidiatly worked fine like usual, it was actually only searches that started with "n" or "c" that did not work. Perhaps the reason I noticed this so much is because some of the apps I use all the time are Chrome, Calender, Notes, Contacts, Calculator, Clock, Camera (wow- just realized how many apps started with "c"!).
    While in spotlight, if I type in C or N and then delete it and try to type another letter that would work normally, it does not work. So if I type in N and then delete it and type in A, A will not come up with results like it would if I just started with A. But if I close and reopend spotlight search and then type in A, it works fine.
    When spotlight search is unresponsive if I wait for about a min sometimes results will actually come up, other times it will sort of crash (it will just randomly close before any results came up).
    I could go on and on with the little details concerning this problem but I do not know what info would/would not be useful to you guys. I have tried restoring my phone from a backup and nothing changed. I am updated to the most recent version. My phone has never been jailbroken and otherwise is in perfect shape.
    Thanks for reading,
    Matt

    I've seen this happen before, and generally turning off Documents and Data in Settings > iCloud will fix it.
    If that doesn't work, try the following.
    1. Restart the phone and check it out.
    2. Reset the phone (hold the home button and the lock button until you see an Apple Logo and then let them go).
    3. Go into Settings > General > Reset > Reset all Settings and test it out again
    4. If none of the above work, try creating either an iTunes backup or an iCloud backup and restore the device as new using iTunes. Here's an article to help with that: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4137

  • Hi - When I go into Contacts and type a letter in the search bar to get to last names that begin with that letter I get a list of random names that don't correlate to the letter. My settings are fine.  Help ?

    Hi. When I go into my contacts and type a letter in the saerch bar to get to a list of last names that begin with that letter I get a list of random names that don't begin or end with the letter.  My Settings appear fine.  Any insights would be greatly appreciated.  Cheers Bill

    The search bar is not designed to take you to names beginning with the letter you put in. If you want to do that, use the letters down the side. In the search bar, the device will return results for all contacts that have that have that letter in them. If you type a couple of letters of the name, you'll find what you want faster. Once you get used to how it works, it's quite efficient.
    Best of luck.

  • 10.5.5 Client Getting No Results with Spotlight Search

    Hi -
    My company is slow to change. We are just now getting some Leopard workstations in our enterprise. The thing my users noticed right away was that under 10.5.5, they are unable to get any results from Spotlight searches on our Tiger Xserves over AFP. The Tiger workstation users can get search results from share points but not Leopard ones.
    The Xserves all have 10.4.9 Server installed. The XServes and workstations are all bound to AD with SSO turned on. I limited the servers 10.4.9 Server because with 10.4.11 Server I get AD issues. 10.4.9 is stable for us.
    I am forced to use Leopard as the new MacPros demand it
    My question - What should I do so the Leopard workstations (10.5.5) can get real Spotlight results from my share points?
    I have looked at the other Apple Support Boards and I don't get understand what they are talking about.
    Thanks in advance.

    I am an IT manager in a similar situation. However, I have shelled out the thousands to upgrade everything to the latest OS with my xserve running 10.5.5, and users running 10.5.5 or 10.5.6. Spotlight is totally useless. I have talked to tech "supportless" several times - no help. I have installed and reinstalled 10.5 on the server, reformatted drives, copied and deleted hundreds of gigs of data, done all kinds of terminal commands that were supposed to fix it, but it still just doesn't work. I wish Apple would stop coming out with new stuff for a while and fix this basic computer function. For now I use "Better Search". Better Search is Freeware from http://www.fornextsoft.com. Its ok - at least it finds stuff, but it is still not 100% accurate sometimes.

  • Problems with Spotlight searching of shared volumes

    According to: http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/300.html#spotlight, I should be able to "...search any connected Mac with Personal File Sharing enabled or a file server that’s sharing its files."
    It doesn't specify what "file server", so I presume it means Spotlight should be able to search any mounted shared volume (assuming, of course, that indexing has been enabled).
    I have a NAS device that I want to be able to search with Spotlight. According to mdutil, the volume is enabled for indexing, but I don't see any results when I search under "Shared" in Finder via Cmd+F. (I checked, and there's no .Spotlight folders on the volume.)
    From what I recall, under Tiger you could manually specify a network volume to index, but if you dismounted the volume, you'd have to re-enable indexing on next mount. This worked for other file systems (such as Fat32 & NTFS), as well as for HFS+ drives.
    According to mdutil in Leopard, the volume is still enabled for indexing even across dismounts. The NAS drive is not HFS+ formatted, but uses XFS.
    I've tried deleting the index, to no avail.
    Has anyone successfully used Spotlight to search mounted volumes on volumes not shared via another Mac?
    Am I missing something?

    You have not missed anything.... Leopard promises but does NOT deliver.
    I use an AFP server with Bonjour enabled. And NO NO NO Spotlight search is possible on this network volume...
    This is outrageous and FALSE information....
    Oh and - that Leopard is Sporting 300 new features is false info too.... Not even the "What is New in Leopard" says anything about 300 features.. But it sounds great doesn't it....

  • Read Document in FileUtilities  cannot search a file with french character in the file name

    Hi,
    I am trying to search a file with french character in the file name like 'captures écran.doc' in my unix server directory, and Write the file somewhere, say in a list of documents or, write on file system to another directory.
    I am using to Read Document in FileUtilities of Foundation, but it cannot read the file due to french character in its name. Although it can find any other file name without these french characters.
    Tried renaming but that also cannot find the file with french character name.
    Please provide any idea to solve it using LC operation.
    Regards,
    Rohan Raj.

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for the post, but I have already found a solution to it a month ago. Sorry for not posting the solution.
    You just have to set the '-Djava.property.file.encoding=ISO8859-1' into JVM argument of your server startup, and bounce the server back to pick the new JVM arg set. And now the service Read Document in FileUtilities of Foundation will read all french characters.
    ISO8859-1refers to "Latin alphabet no. 1," consisting of 191 characters from the Latin script. This character-encoding scheme is used throughout The Americas,Western Europe, Oceania, and much of Africa. It is also commonly used in most standard romanizations of East-Asian languages.
    regards,
    Rohan Raj.
