Sql 2008 r2 cluster side by side with sql 2012 cluster on Windows 2008 R2

We have a SQL 2008R2 active/passive SQL cluster running on Windows 2008 R2 cluster.
I would like to add a SQL 2012 clustered instance to the same Winows 2008 R2 cluster.
Are there any issues involved having a SQL 2008 R2 clustered instance running side by side with a SQL 2012 instance in same Windows 2008 R2 cluster?
Are there any pitfalls/"gotchas" to watch for with SQL 2012 cluster install?

Hello,
Two instances, one SQL Server 2008 and the other SQL Server 2012, side-by-side, is fully supported.
I would like to recommend you to assign a different port (not port 1433) to the non-default instance
to avoid an IP address conflict between both instances.

    i would install a DPM Agent on all SQL Cluster Nodes an Backup the SQL Databases.
    Additionally for Desaster Recovery, i would protect the VM, if your Disk space ist not enought for this, just Backup Systemstate of the CluserNodes

  • Upgrade of Integation Services (Windows 2012 R2) on Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG fails

    Here is the scenario:
    Legacy Host: Windows 2008 R2
    Guest VM: Windows 2008 R2 with Exchange 2013 SP1 DAG cluster.
    After importing the VM (2008 R2 and Exchange 2013 DAG) into a 2012 R2 host (Cluster).  (copy VM files to new 2012 R2host) Everything works fine.
    Then upgrading "Installation Services" (for Windows 2012 R2 host) on the imported VM runs fine with no errors to the "Restart" prompt. VM than shows: "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn
    of your computer." Hangs there for about 20 minutes until is says "shutting down". Hangs there for 20 minutes until power off. Restart to normal start; "Preparing to configure Windows. Do not turnoff your computer." proceeds slowly
    to "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." hangs there again indefinite. Sometime hangs at shutdown cycle and "Configuring Windows updates 32% complete. Do not turn of your computer." indefinitely.
    I moved 20 other machines from a 2008 R2 host to new Windows 2012 R2 hosts all of these machines install the 2012 R2 Integration services just fine on the 2008 R2 VM. Just the 2008 R2 VMs clustered (DAG) and Exchange 2013 SP1 do not take the Integration
    Services upgrade.
    Any advise from Microsoft? I know I could decommission the DAG and Exchange machines and install Integration services on the native box before Exchange and DAG and that would sure work, but I'd rather avoid that amount of work for a simple integration layer
    upgrade.

    Could you try use the following method to fix this issue first?
    1. Run the System Update Readiness Tool, then check if there is any error in the Checksur.log and checksur.persist.log.
     1. Please run the System Update Readiness Tool on this affected server. Please download this tool from the following Microsoft article:

    2. The System Update Readiness Tool creates the log files that captures any issues that the tool found or fixed. The log files are located at the following location:

    3. Please paste the checksur.log here for analysis.
    If there is no error found, please try the following step.

    2. Use Fix it tool to reset the Windows Update components.
     1. Open the following link.

     2. Select Windows 8.1, Windows 8 and Windows 7 in the product selection box.

    Note: We can reset the Windows Updates manually by following the steps in the KB above.

     1. Open the command promote with Administrators.
     2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
         sfc /scannow

  • Apache not working  with FMS 4.5 on Windows 2008

    FMS 4.5.1 Windows 2008 SP2 (64bit).
    I've searched everywhere for a possible solution to this, so my apologies if this has been asked before and my thanks for any potential help that anyone can offer to help resolve this.
    We are deploying Adobe Flash Media Server 4.5.1 on a new server but Apache does not work (does not serve html files or stream Quicktime H.264 files).
          Assorted Problems & Error messages:
    1.  The webroot/index.html page loads locally, but the HLS/HDS streams result in a 2032 error.
    2. The webroot/index.html page does not load from  external locations:
         http://63.116.232.5/index.html (does not load externally).
         http://63.116.232.6/index.html (our old server, FMS 4.0 and Windows 2003). Everything on this server works, the 2 major differences being that it is running FMS 4.x on Windows 2003.
    Some RTMP streaming works externally and internally (f4v files):

    FMS does not stream Quicktime H.264 files even though f4v files work.

    Apache does not serve Quicktime/H.264 files: I made sure that Apache had all of the correct mime types specified.
        Error messages and attempted solutions:
    Apache's erro_log file:
           a. httpd.exe: Could not determine the server's fully qualified domain name, using 127.0.0.1 for ServerName
    2. FMS master.log file
          a. FMSHttpd -k start returned 1:

    1a:  Edited httpd.conf file to include ServerName 63.116.232.5
    1b: The presence of this error message also indicates that Apache httpd was unable to obtain a fully-qualified hostname by doing a reverse lookup on your server's IP address.
    In order for the server to accept external connections a reverse DNS lookup needs to be created. I created a reverse DNS lookup and  edited the /etc/hosts file to include the IPaddress, Fully Qualified Domain Name (FQDN), shortname.
    This is the format suggested by the article:
    127.0.0.1       localhost.localdomain   localhost       foo.example.com
    Running the nbtstat -a 63.116.232.5 command on the machine results in the following:
    WIN-8AIHI2J0524<00>  UNIQUE      Registered
    THS-LIBRARY-VOD<00>  GROUP       Registered
    THS-LIBRARY-VOD<1C>  GROUP       Registered
    WIN-8AIHI2J0524<20>  UNIQUE      Registered

    I edited the /etc/hosts to the following (with versions using the local host ip 127.0.0.1 and the external ip address, IPv4 is being used):

    I've also read Adobe's port configuration articles and  changed the ports that Apache and FMS use as specified in the conf/fms.ini file, but nothing has worked so far. I restored everything to the original settings until I can find out exactly how to fix this.

    I changed the files back as you suggested (the failure was occuring with the default settings) and our admin assured me yesterday that the ports that I inquired about were open. I'll ask him again.
    The telenet command for both ports 80 and 1935 result in Connect failed for me. I'll check Windows Firewall (turned off)  and McAfee to see if there is anything there blocking ports.
    Confirm that external connections are blocked: 63.116.232.5/index.html (does not open outside of localhost). No problem accessing with our old server (63.116.232.6/index.html).
    I ran this command in nmap and here are the results (11 ports closed): nmap 63.116.232.5 -Pn80

  • Issue with installing password sync on Windows 2008

    I have installed pwd sync 64 bit on Windows 2008. Configured it in direct mode (no jms). But when I change the password of a user it is not syncing with the IdM. We have the 32 bit pwd sync working fine on Win 2003. Is there any special steps for installing, configuring 64 bit pwd sync on Win 2008. Thanks. Jack

    Given the error "failed to crack URL" I believe you're hitting an issue we have documented as bug # 21999. Here's the jist of it and a possible way around it.
    ==========
    When installing password sync on a Windows 2008 system, if you are not
    logged in as 'Administrator', the installer and the configure applications
    may be subject to Windows File And Registry Virtualization (FARV). This may
    cause the registry entries for password sync to be written to the user portion
    of the registry, rather than the system portion. Subsequently, password sync
    will fail with the message "failed to crack URL".
    To work around FARV, either run the MSI installer from a privileged cmd.exe
    prompt, or run the configure.exe application using the "Run As Administrator"
    functionality (right-click on the configure.exe application, select "Run As
    Administrator").

    I have my .sql extension files in mac associated with SQL Developer, but when I open the file SQL Developer does not start; nothing happens.
    I checked all the associations and it seems correct.

    I can provide solution if you can tell me the registry value(HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\sqlwb.sql.9.0\Shell\Open\Command). I believe there is an extra %1 which is causing this.

    Just seeing if anyone has come across the same issue with their WIn 8.1 clients not prompting for 2FA once configured with DirectAccess 2012 R2?
    I have created the 2x OTP certificates, enabled OTP via PowerShell and set up the RADIUS server but whatever happens the Win 8.1 client does not get prompted for 2FA - They connect seamlessly?
    I have also configured the DAProbeUser on the RADIUS server

    I hate to be the annoying guy but take a look at this KB article:

    and - for a fact, doesn't include in Windows 8.1\2012 R2 as this bug still exists in those operating systems.
    another annoying fact - No other update was released for these version yet.
    this example approves that not every hotfix \ updates that was released for 8\2012 before 8.1\2012 R2, is already included in 8.1\2012 R2
    and allow me to add another fact.
    when you configure DirectAccess via the remote access wizard it creates a WMI query called
    DirectAccess - Laptop Only WMI Filter.
    after you create it in Windows Server 2012 R2 - look at the WMI Query and you'll see that by default it doesn't apply to version 6.3! the version for Windows 8.1.
    if you want to add the support for Windows 8.1 you have to modify manually the query which is of course, not supported by Microsoft.
    That is just another symptom that makes me wonder if Microsoft did ANY change or update to DirectAccess 2012 R2

    We have a Windows 2008 domain, and now we need to configure IE 10 options, so we have to import the Windows 8 / 2012 ADMX files. Can we just do the following:
    1. Download

    2. Unzip it and copy the .admx files to c:\Windows\Sysvol\<domain>\policies and create a directory called policydefinitions
    3. Then just re-open Group Policy Management ?

  • SQL Server Compact 3.5 Merge Replication With SQL Server 2012 - Causing IIS App Pool to Crash

    Hi, I may be the only person in the world doing this but I wanted to give this information to anyone else who may follow this path in the future, and hopefully avoid a headache, or at least a paid support call to Microsoft.
    My original scenario was we had a SQL Server 2008 Server using Merge Replication through and IIS (web server) to several Windows Mobile 6 devices.  This has worked fairly well for a few years.
    Recently we upgraded our SQL server to version 2012 SP 1.  After moving the database over to the new server, and re-setting the merge replication stuff, we couldn't get merge replication to work on the Windows Mobile 6 handheld devices.  The replication
    would appear to start, and then we would get a message saying that the device could not get to the web site.  The message on the handheld device was this:
    "The IIS service is not available."
    After doing some more research, we found that the start of the replication process was causing the Thread Pool that was running the SQLCESA35.dll to crash.  
    The SQLCESALOG.txt file had this information:
    Date Time == SQLCESA Version ==> 3.5.8088.0
    Date Time Hr=80004005 ERR:Couldn't find existing RSCB 1
    After 2 days of trying to figure out the issue on our own, we gave in and called for paid Microsoft support.  They eventually found a known issue where a cumulative update was able to fix the problem.
    We installed the update on the IIS server and everything ran smoothly again.

  • How to Create a SQL Agent Job For A SSIS Package with Sql Server Authentication

    Hi ALl,
    I have a SSIS package which basically has a data flow task in which i pull the data from one server and copy it into another server and my source server is the one where i dont have windows authentication and i have to only use a sql server authentication
    . This package runs fine if i click the server connection properties type the password and save it.
    Now, my task is to set up a sql agent job which basically uses a proxy account and takes this package from the file system and runs it.But when i try to run this package, its failing with an error saying 
    "Login Failed For rpt5user" where rpt5user is the username for my sql server authentication of the source connection.
    Can someone please help me with any suggestions on how to do this?
    I have heard that we can achieve it by using xml config file which i have never used and i am trying to google around but for no luck.
    So, If someone can please throw any suggestions or ideas on this it would be great.

  • MMC problem with IDS CS3 on x64 Windows 2008 Server

    Hi,
    I have installed IDS CS3 5.0.3 on Windows Server 2008 x64. It works fine on the command line and the service starts up OK. However, when I go to MMC and try to add the plug-in to configure my instances, the IDS plug-in is not in the list.
    This is not a problem on a 32-bit installation. Therefore I assume it is something to do with 32/64 bit versions of MMC. (I had a similar issue with ODBC configuration, there are two configuration apps installed (32 and 64bit), one has a shortcut in the admin tools and I need the other one)
    Can anyone shed any light on this or had the same problem?
    And I can't go to CS4 yet.

    At a command prompt, try:
    cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3 Server
    regsvr32 InDesignServerMMC64.dll
    (substituting correct install path, if that isn't right)
    Note 'InDesignServerMMC64.dll', not 'InDesignServerMMC.dll' - MMC requires an x64 compiled snap-in when run on an x64 OS.
    That should bring up a dialog saying regsvr32 succeeded.You may need to have opened the console window as administrator for that to succeed on 2008 Server.
    Then re-launch mmc.exe & it should appear.

    I'm having some trouble finding some concrete information from Microsoft regarding the deployment of applications to RDS servers using SCCM 2012 R2. There seems to be a lot of conjecture, old information and old wives tales floating around and I was hoping
    I could get some information confirmed!
    1. MSI installs automatically switch to install mode on RDS servers? 
    I've seen this mentioned a few times. I've also seen it mentioned that it is only true when running the MSI from the console session manually (i.e clicking the MSI file) not running as SYSTEM as SCCM would usually do. Can someone confirm if they do this
    themselves or not?
    2. Users still logged in when deploying applications? 
    Is it possible to deploy an application while users are still logged in? Is this only related to going into 'install' mode and taking the chance that a user will do something that will cause issues? Or is it known to cause issues?
    I guess those are the main ones, I'm experienced in SCCM but not with deploying to RDS servers, I cant seem to find any straight answers!

    I've never had large enough RDS environment to use SCCM for app push, but from my experience in managing 2012/R2 RDS and local installs, I never bother with switching to install mode anymore and it works fine.  Now if you're skeptical, you can
    easily build this into a script that runs as a pre-req to your .MSI as part of the software package in SCCM so it's not a big deal.
    As for installing apps while users are logged in, shouldn't be a problem if you're installing a new app., if however you're updating an existing application or uninstalling it, then it may be best to drain that RDS host first of all user sessions then do
    the work just to be safe.  this also helps avoid reboots.

  • ISCSI boot with Intel NICs added to windows 2008 r2 routing table causes non iscsi traffic to attempt default routes on iscsi networks

    I have a server with Intel 82576 Gigabit Dual Port Nics.  I have configured them to use iSCSI boot the primary looks to 10.0.0.1/24 and the secondary looks to 10.0.1.1/24.  The target is configured correctly.  Everything boots as expected.
     I have added the MPIO feature and configured MPIO for the iscsi initiator as per: http://blogs.technet.com/b/migreene/archive/2009/08/29/3277914.aspx.
     My issue is that the iSCSI networks show up in the routing table like so:
    I did not configure a default route in the Intel setup utility:
    I tried to explicitly remove the 0.0.0.0 entry and leave blank, with no change.  As you can see with the above routing table traffic attempts to travel over these routes:

    A ping to the outside world first attempts on 10.0.0.x/24 network, then on 10.0.1.x/24 network and then finally on the network the traffic should go over.  I don't want my iSCSI traffic to ever show up with a default route.  How do I get rid of it?
    route delete 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 "on-link" results in: The route deletion failed: The parameter is incorrect.

    route delete 0.0.0.0 deletes all default routes, then I have to add back in the "valid default route" of 192.168.100.6.
    I would like to not have to do a route delete though.

    So I've sort of given up on fixing the gateway assignment in the route for iSCSI boot.  I configured a DHCP server to give out the information required by iSCSI boot and configured the network cards to use DHCP for their configuration.  I insured
    that my DHCP server gave out no default gateway entry.  However, I still got the undesired routes in the routing table.  This makes me assume that there isn't a "fix" for it, only the workaround.
    Here is the script I run on each iSCSI Boot initiator (you would obviously change the ip number to suit your environment):

    Then I added a task in “task scheduler” of "administrative tools"  that ran as the user “system” “when the computer starts” that runs this script.

  • Downgrade Windows 2012 Server to Windows 2008 Server

    I can see this topic covered but the pervious answers are not solving my problem.
    A client purchased Server 2012 standard OEM from us (distributor), he want to downgrade to Server 2008 STD.
    They called the MS Activation Center and received the answer that for OEM the downgrade is not available. We called the Activation Center and we received the same answer.

    What's your question?  It appears the Activation Center provided the answer but you did not like it?
    As an OEM, you should be aware that OEM licenses have some built-in restrictions.  For detailed answers to questions you have, you should talk with your Microsoft representative.

  • Windows 2012 Activation from Windows 2008 R2 KMS server

    Hello,
    We have 2 KMS servers in our Domain. One has server has KMS key for Windows 2012 KMS installed and other not.
    I have joined first windows 2012 server to domain and its been 3 hours the server is still not activated from KMS server.
    When client contacts KMS server for Windows 2012 licnese, if key is not installed on first KMS server, will it automatically contact second one? Do I need to change sonmething?
    One more question:
    Is it possible to have Windows 2012 key installed on the same KMS server, which is already acting as KMS sertver for Windows 2008R2? and Windows 2003 R2? or wil this cause any issues?

    Hello,
    Once a KMS host is activated, it will publish it's record to DNS.  KMS clients attempting to activate will query DNS to get a KMS host, if there is more than one, they will use the first one they get.  The DNS server should be rotating which records
    it hands out.
    If they activate, they will cache that record and attempt to use it when they renew, if they fail to renew or activate, they will query DNS for the KMS host again.
    Since this is a new KMS host it will need at least 5 KMS clients to contact it meet the count needs for Server.
    What version of Windows is the other KMS host machine is it Windows Server 2008, Windows Server 2008 R2 or is it Windows Server 2003 R2?
