  • SSH Not Connecting - Times Out

Hi everyone. I'm back on Arch after a few year hiatus.
I'm trying to SSH into my ARM based Arch linux install.
SSHing from the local network works fine. No problems.
When I try to SSH from outside the network, it doesn't connect and times out.
    I've created port.conf under /etc/systemd/system/sshd.socket.d/ which reads
    [Socket]
    # Disable default port
    ListenStream=
    # Set new port
    ListenStream=2222
I have systemd.socket service running as confirmed by systemctl
I have port forwarded port 2222 TCP\UDP on my modem to the computer's IP on the network.
    Running
    sudo tcpdump -lnn -i eth0 port 2222
reads a lot of information. Specifically, I've tracked down the IP address that I'm trying to connect from and it reads:
    21:53:37.234872 IP 172.56.16.239.25065 > 192.168.1.195.2222: Flags [S], seq 1661893998, win 65535, options [mss 1400,nop,wscale 4,nop,nop,TS val 25806051 ecr 0,sackOK,eol], length 0
Would anybody have an idea what the problem could be here?

    leberyo wrote:
    It's giving:
    23:22:41.322847 IP 192.168.1.195.2876 > 172.56.16.239.30117: Flags [S.], seq 2567835032, ack 1441387547, win 28960, options [mss 1460,sackOK,TS val 10693 ecr 27470940,nop,wscale 7], length 0
ok, that is the SYN-ACK, next must be the ACK from source 172.56.16.239
if your your outside IP-address has always 172.56.16.239, you can use
    tcpdump -i eth0 host 172.56.16.239
to have the full traffic for this IP-address
    The curious thing is that it responds from a different IP; 192.168.1.195. Is that normal? The server is actually on 192.168.1.193. That's the address I'm using to ssh;
    ssh -p **** *@192.168.1.193
To avoid confusion, I just changed the ssh port to 2876 which is why it's responding with that port instead of the original 2222 that I put in when I started this thread.
No that is NOT normal, there must be an address translation somewhere; maybe the routing device between your client (172.56.16.239) and your server; this could be the problem; that the address translation is not statefull; intended to mean your client gets answers (SYN-ACK) with server ip  192.168.1.195 as source, which it just drops. Then you would see in the server-tcpdump, only repeated SYN->SYN-ACKs
Could you also tcpdump on your client side ?
EDIT: Is there a reason for using sshd.socket and not sshd.service ? I've no experiences with this socket ... - maybe I'm wrong with my suggestions

  • Terminal SSH not connecting?

Forgive me if this isn't the best place for this question, but it's mostly Greek to me. I've been able to log into my remote server using the "ssh [email protected]" command from Terminal. Within moments I get the "password" prompt and all is well.
Recently, something is choking and I have no clue where to start looking. I type the ssh command and nothing happens for a minute or two, and then there's the message "Connection closed by nn.nnn.nnn.nnn" (the IP address). Blammo.
The verbose log follows. Any clues? Thanks to all in advance.

Tried that, it asked me to establish the authenticity of the host, I said yes, it added the domain to the list of known hosts - and then nothing again. Got the "connection closed by the host" message after a minute or two.
I tried something different, and sent "ssh [email protected]" (where 'othername' is a site owned by a friend) and it promptly asked for the password (which I don't know so I logged off Terminal). Is it possible the hangup is at my host? I can access all the features of my site normally - I just can't log in via ssh via either root or ftp.

  • Can not connect to a remote SSH server with my mac

Ok have tried 4 different applications, fetch , captain ftp, terminal, etc.
I am trying and connect to a friends ssh server to upload some file logs. I have the correct login/password, have tried both protocol 1 and 2. Port 22 is correct. I keep getting the error message

sshexchangeidentification: Connection closed by remote host - Ternminal
We have tested it using Telnet and other programs on a PC and all is well.
When i try and connect he receives the message
Refused connect from cpe-"ip address"(ip address)
    policy: HostKey/etc/ssh/sshhost_rsakey
Do i have a setting somewhere i am missing.

1st, is the server behind a home router? Has port 22 been "Port Forwarded" from the internet side to the server's side of the router?
2nd, from a Terminal session use the command:
    ssh -v -v -v [email protected]
The -v -v -v triplets will give you a wealth of ssh connection information. If you read through this carefully you may find the root cause of your problems (assuming the 1st step above doesn't yield results).
Another thing to consider, is that ssh will not make a connection to an account that it does not consider to be reasonably secure. This means that the home directory of the account and specific key subdirectories must have proper ownership and permissions, or ssh will not connect. The specific ownership and permissions needed and the files and directories checked are spelled out in the ssh man page
    man ssh

  • Solaris 9 remote login (ssh) drops connection

    Hello All,
I wonder if you can help me...
Let me give you some set-up details before I ask you the question.
I have Ultra-60 at home with Solaris 9 and recommended patch cluster installed. The machine is connected to a Linksys WAG54G ADSL router/modem through RJ45 ethernet cable. The router also has windows XP machine connected through RJ45 ethernet cable. I also have another windows XP machine that connects to the router over wireless connection.
I have opened up required ports on the router/port forwarding so that I can access the services remotely. I was first using default ports for http and ssh, but have now changed them to different ports - to be a bit more secure.
I have created a domain name through dyndns.org.
I have ssh running on the solaris 9 machine and has all the remote commands (rlogin, rsh, telnet) commented out in the /etc/inetd.conf and hence are not running on the machine.
I have a UK ADSL servise provider called Pipex.
Now lets get to the problem:
The whole purpose of the above set-up is that I want to access sun machine from work. The whole set-up works perfectly well - for a little while and then something strange happens. At work, when I connect to the sun machine, everything works fine and when I leave the session idle for 15-20 minutes (could be less time), the connection drops and then I can not connect to the machine for good couple of hours. When I say connection drops, I do not mean that system displays a logout message or something - There is no response from the server - pressing of return key does not do anything and eventually I get a message on windows pop up that connection is disconnected. If I try to retry, the client tries for a while and then says that connection timed out. Same thing happens if I use the IP address I use the right IP address as someone at home checks the router to confirms the correct IP address. This eliminates problem with domain name.
I have tried everything and can not work out what is causing this problem - the machine has all the 9_recommended patches. To narrow the problem down, I set up apache server on the sun machine. Today, when the connection dropped, I tried to connecting to the apache server and it failed - 'page can not be displayed' message on the internet explorer. However, after couple of minutes, I managed to get to the website but still can not get login prompt through ssh client.
What does that mean? Does it mean that server is playing up, or is it the sshd or is there any time out option in solaris 9... the strange thing is that I can access the web page - though it was not accessible at start when connection to ssh dropped out.
Could it be the router? The linksys do not come with a rule based firewall... so there is nothing that states that disconnects after some inactivity. The port forwarding is working as I do get to login to the server and to the web server. It can not be changing the default port numbers as the problem was there when there were standard ports being used.
It is not the link at my office as my friend, in a different company gets the same problem on my machine connects to it and after some in-activity, the connection drops and then he can not login for a long time.
It can not be the ADSL link as people at home can use the internet without any problem and they can access the sun machine locally.
It can not be the windows machines connected to the router as problem is there when windows machines are switched off dont know if windows would cause this, but just wanted to eliminate anything that I could think of.
One strange think that I did see yesterday was that, when I managed to login the last command showed that I was logged in throughout the time the time when I could not logged in . The error message in the /var/adm/messages stated something like socket error and connection reset by peer or something can not give you exact message right now as I can not login to the machine. The time on the message was couple of couple of minutes before I managed to login again and that time was the same as the time showed in last command is my logout time.
Does anyone know what is causing all this problem? Any pointers or help will be appreciated. If there is any place else that you think I can get the answer, please kindly let me know.

    Thanks...
    A few new developments....
    - I opened 2 sessions to the server, left one with no activity and in the other session, I ran iostat 1... The session with no activity got dropped and iostat one carried on... When the session dropped, I managed to login straight away... so no delay of couple of hours. May be because iostat was still running?
    - I now have an ftp server running on windows and I can access it even when connection drops out... right now I have no access to sun... but ftp server is running fine.
    - I enable remote router access and I can access that as well...
    - I enabled telnet and I can not access the sun with telnet either.
So, its either solaris 9 or the router.
Tomorrow, I will connect an another sun machine and then see if connection to both is dropped or just one. If it is to both then it must be router as the way ssh, telnet work is different to the way ftp work - as someone told me this today... so if other sun machine is not accessable then its not sol9 but router. The other machine has Sol 2.5.1 running.
Some one said that it could be that router is running out of translation table entries - but with so few connections? Or it could be that when there is no activity, router thinks that connection should be dropped - there is no open in the router setup which states that... Or Solaris has some timeout feature?
    More later.
    Kind Regards
    Ahmerin

  • Applications think I'm not connected to internet, yet I am

I'm going crazy here. I have been using Mac OSX for a few years with no problems. Yesterday, after using the httpmail plugin for 2 years to read my hotmail in Mail app, it stopped working. Today, while I am connected to the internet via an ethernet connection and able to read the web and ssh without any problems, I cannot use either Speed Download or Software Update. Both apps think that I am not connected to the internet. Can anybody tell me how I can be online, yet some applications think that I am not?
    Thanks, Tricia

Turned out I had a web proxy box ticked in the Network/Proxies settings. Not sure how this happened, but unticking it solved all problems.

This looks like FTPS which is not supported on the ASA. You can workaround it by trying to connect using Active mode from the outside instead of PSV.

  • Server Admin not connecting to Leopard Server when accessing via VPN

    Hi everyone,
Recently, as the title suggests, Server Admin (or Server Preferences, for that matter) would not connect to my remote server via VPN. I'm quite sure that the server is working nicely, as the users (both of them lovely young ladies with considerable charms, which makes on-site support quite interesting, if distracting) didn't call me to complain, and I can login via SSH with no problems.
The server is a Mac Mini, connected to an Airport Extreme (gigabit N), which in turn connects to our ADSL modem, if that helps any.
Now, I did tinker around a bit with the settings before this happened, so I think it's probably my fault (well, I started my "career" of administering this server a week ago, what do you expect), so I suppose I may have inadvertently limited access to a service required for Server Admin and Server Preferences to function.
If anyone could tell me which services are absolutely necessary for Server Admin to function, or at least where to start looking, I'd be immensely grateful. I didn't yet go on site to try and wrestle the whole thing from there, as the travel costs are non-trivial, so I'd rather do it remotely, if at all possible.

This is exactly the difficulty I am having with a 10.5.4 Intel xserve. I have established a VPN connection that connects me to my business LAN, and I know it has carried out the connection because there are a number of things I can access properly that are not available on the public internet. For instance, my LOM ports are restricted to my business LAN, and when I connect to the server via VPN I can access teh LOM ports and using server monitor. However, when I try to use Server Admin, nothing works. It won't connect. I too am confused. All traffic to the xserve is allowed via the business LAN. I thought all traffic was supposed to be routed to the VPN server when connected via a VPN. If this is the case, shouldn't Server Admin work? When I go on site and connect my computer directly to the business LAN, I have no difficulty using Server Admin.

Until this morning, Safari worked pretty much ok. Now, when I launch it, I get the "you are not connected to the internet" page. Firefox and email work fine and network diagnostics verifies a proper connection. I can't even get to "software update."

I have the same problem; if I leave the computer on long enough (usually asleep overnight), when I wake it up, Safari will present the "You are not connected to the Internet" message for any page, and Mail will display the exclamation-point-in-a-triangle for all accounts that says it's offline. Yes, Software Update also complains of a "network problem."
Meanwhile, Firefox or SSH sessions via Terminal will work fine, and both network diagnostics and System Preferences claim that the machine is, indeed, connected just fine with an IP lease and everything. This is over a wired Ethernet connection, and, yes, I've tried swapping the cable between the Mac Pro's two jacks.
I'm a long-time Mac user. I've fixed disk permissions; I've flushed Safari's cache; I've done everything described here. Rebooting always fixes the problem -- but it then recurs when the machine has sat or slept for long enough.
Since Safari and Mail are both affected, while Firefox and shell connections are not, it seems fairly clear it must be a bug in some part of the OS relating to both those Internet products. It doesn't cripple the machine, but it's definitely inconvenient, which is not what I expect from Apple products.

  • Switcher found "You are not connected to the Internet" message confusing

While demonstrating to my brother - a long-time Windows user - that an iMac solved all the problems with Windows XP that he is constantly complaining about to me, he saw Safari's "You are not connected to the Internet" message when the web server for the page didn't respond very quickly. (There wasn't any network problem, or anything wrong with Safari. MacOS or the iMac.) Clicking the 'Reload current page' button brought the web page up. He was angry, saying that the iMac was clearly connected to the Internet as he'd seen me plug in the network cable! He's using this as one of his reasons that "PCs are superior to Macs"!
While I think this is probably a bit of "I don't want to admit that I've been wrong" coming from him (his Windows system has been riddled with malware several times, despite him having kept up to date with Windows updates, using the Windows firewall, a broadband router with firewall, and having tried several anti-virus suites!), I must admit that he has a (limited!) point.
Couldn't the developers cause Safari to display the message "The web page you have requested is not immediately available, still trying - please wait." instead and then, if the web page cannot be displayed after (say) three minutes, and some kind of autromatic diagnostics show that the system still has a network connection, the message "That web page is apparently not available." Only if behind-the-scenes diagnostics show that the Mac has lost its network connection should one ever see the "You are not connected to the Internet" message, in my opinion.
    MacBook 1 etc   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

  • Transactions report "Could not connect to daemon"

Currently evaluationg ZLM 66, and am running into a problem with
transactions. All appropriate modules are installed on client, and rcd is
running correctly (as far as I can tell). Client activated to my ZLM server
just fine, so I know communication from the client to the server is okay.
After my first couple of test transactions to this client failed with the
error "could not connect to daemon", I thought maybe there were some
firewall issues. Completely disabled firewall on the client, and same
results. The ZLM server can ping, ssh, etc to the client, so I know general
    network connectivity is good.
ZLM indicates it communicated with the client in between some of my failed
transactions, which makes again makes me think it's not a network
    connectivity issue.
Has anyone else seen this problem?

Most likely the rcd deamon on the client server is not running.
I had a simmilar issue- basically I had to restart rcd about seven times
while updating one of my boxes.
/etc/init.d/rcd start solved (well, sort of) my problem. Not very
helpfull unless you are manually updating and constantly whatching the
    action.

  • Drop DB control, error: Could not connect to SYS, ORA-12541

    Hi All,
I am new to Oracle. I am struggling to solve this problem for 2 days, but still couldn't get it done. I post my problem here and wish every guru in this forum to offer some help. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
I have Oracle 10.2.0.3.0 installed on GNU/Linux. There are several instances there. The database, listener, sql/plus all work fine. Yesterday, I installed 10g database control on server. The information showed that dbconsole created successfuly. However, I use the produced url (http:// xxx(hostname):1158/em)in my local machine (Win XP) to connect the databse, and the webpage opened. The information showed that EM couldn't be connected to database, and the status of Listener is unavailable, the inforamtion for agent connect.. is: ORA-12541: TNS:no listener (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach).
I googled lots of posts both in this forum and internet and tried to make some changes, but the things get worse. It still didn't work. Even i failed to drop the DB control with the command of emca -config dbcontrol db -repos recreate. the error log information in cfgtoollogs/emca is:
Could not connect to SYS/(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=svv.X.XXX.net)(PORT=1521)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=ORCL3))): ORA-12541: TNS:no listener (DBD ERROR: OCIServerAttach).
I understand it's the problem related to listener, but i have no idea how to verify it. I put the tns.ora and listener.ora here.
    tnsnames.ora:
    xxxxx
    ORCL3 =
    (DESCRIPTION =
    (ADDRESS_LIST =
    (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = 10.3.149.210)(PORT = 1521))
    (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = ORCL3)
    listener.ora
    LISTENER =
    (ADDRESS_LIST=
         (ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=tcp)(HOST=10.3.149.210)(PORT=1521)))
    SID_LIST_LISTENER=
    (SID_DESC=
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME=ORCL2)
    (SID_NAME=ORCL2)
    (ORACLE_HOME=/opt/app/oracle/product/10.2)
    (SID_DESC=
    (GLOBAL_DBNAME=ORCL3)
    (SID_NAME=ORCL3)
    (ORACLE_HOME=/opt/app/oracle/product/10.2)
The above is the problem description, any suggestion and help are greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Kind regards,
    Ian

I use the "emca -config dbcontrol db" to config the DB control, but failed. The following is the log information:

  • Lauch_msg() socket is not connected

I installed Lion Server in my Macmini early 2009 and after a while of use when I boot the system it stays stuck at the gray boot screen.
If I boot verbose the system last message is lauch_msg() socket is not connected and it remains at it.
That's the second time this happens. At first time I reinstalled the system using the recover partition and it worked till I rebooted it.
Is there a solution to this problem ? Is it a known problem of Lion Server ? I would like to found a different solution than reinstall the system again.
    Regards,
    Anderson

I am having the same issue on a 2009 Unibody MacBook.  Attempts to boot 10.7 Lion Server hang after
    net.inet6.ip6.fw.enable: 1 -> 0
BootCacheControl: Unable to open /var/db/BootCache.playlist: 2 No such file or directory

This is the second time I've reinstalled.  These are normal App Store clean installs on newly formatted hard drives with no additional software or drivers running.
I have another partition that has 10.7 Lion without Server on the same hard drive in the same computer and it without problems.  I appreciate any feedback.

  • HT3964 socket is not connected

My Macbook pro would not boot,
the Launch Msg says (Socket is not Connected).
Pls anyone, do help out with steps to get it back on track.
    thanks...

Wild guess. Is there an ssh-agent running under the username you are logging into?
I know that in Leopard when you interactively login, you get an ssh-agent created and most likely a socket is used to communicate with it.
So I'm wondering launchd (which I think starts up the sshd) is having problems creating an ssh-agent for the login session.
Again, this is a wild guess.
