Starting a RAC db

DB version:10gR1
We have two instances (say mysid1 and mysid2) running in our RAC database.Due to a power failure we have to restart this database.But i got the following error when i tried to restart the instance
*$ sqlplus / as sysdba*
SQLPlus: Release 10.1.0.4.0 - Production on Tue Sep 2 05:37:56 2008*

ORA-29702: error occurred in Cluster Group Service operation
SQL>
After a bit of googling(peace be upon google), i came to know about srvctl. So, i am going to use that. But should i start some Cluster services , before i start using srvctl. I am new to RAC.

You need to use srvctl to start and stop your RAC instances.
for example,
srvctl start instance -d MYSID -i MYSID1
of course check CRS status first.

  • Asm, instance and service failing to start 10g rac redhat el5

    hi,
    i have been following a how to guide from oracle's website about implementing a 10g rac system using el5 (http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html), by the end of the installation and setup I had both the nodes up and running and all services were up and running. Then under the root account I rebooted one of the nodes. now when I check the status of the services I get this:
    [oracle@rac01 ~]$ crs_stat -t
    Name           Type           Target    State     Host

    ora.rac02.vip  application    ONLINE    ONLINE    rac02though I can start the asm instance manually by
    srvctl start asm -n rac01and it starts but the instance and service on the rebooted node still wont start. is there a log file which tells me what the error is when it tries to start the instance? what can I do to ensure that if a node is rebooted that all of the services get started correctly and the node automatically rejoins the cluster (i thought I had set all of this from the instructions of the guide I was following).
    Regards
    Martin.

    Check ASM resource:
    crs_stat -p "resource_name
    $ crs_stat | grep NAME\= | grep ASM1

    $ crs_stat -p ora.rac01.ASM1.asm

    DESCRIPTION=CRS application for ASM instance
    What do you see AUTO_START?
    if 1 = auto start:
    or check error ASM while start... at ASM_HOME/log/rac01/racg/*
    If AUTO_START=2
    Oracle Clusterware is configured to start the VIP, listener, instance, ASM, database services and other resources during system boot. Starting with 10.1.0.4, it is possible to modify some resources to have their profile parameter AUTO_START set to the value 2. This means that after node reboot, or when Oracle Clusterware is started, resources with AUTO_START=2 will need to be started manually via srvctl. Please work with Oracle Support if you need to modify this attribute.
    If AUTO_START=2 and need to change to 1:
    Example:
    $ crs_stat -p ora.rac01.ASM1.asm
    NAME=ora.rac01.ASM1.asm
    TYPE=application
    ACTIVE_PLACEMENT=0
    AUTO_START=2
    $ crs_stat -p ora.rac01.ASM1.asm > ORA_CRS_HOME/crs/public/ora.rac01.ASM1.asm
    $ crs_unregister ora.rac01.ASM1.asm
    $ crs_stat -p ora.rac01.ASM1.asm

    Use the 'srvctl config database -d ' command to check if the instance has been configured in the Oracle Cluster Registry; make sure that the GSDs are running on each node in the cluster.

  • Not able to start the RAC database service

    Hi Experts,
    I have created a RAC Database service . I have made two instances as preferred and no instance as available. When i am trying to start the service
    (srvctl start service -s newser -d newdb) , the command is hanging.
    Please help me out.
    Thanks and Regards.

    Hi Ivan,
    Grateful for the clue.
    We got the similar issue in the following 2 node RAC setting:

    crs_stop ora.rac1.LISTENER_rac1.lsnr
    crs_stop ora.rac2.LISTENER_rac2.lsnr
    OR
    srvctl stop listener -n rac1 -l ora.rac1.LISTENER_rac1.lsnr

    You should use the second option using srvctl.
    Because srvctl is meant for starting/stopping resources.
    Even using first command also you can achieve this and also using lsnrctl also. But I would prefer srvctl.

    Try reinstalling OS X. What version did you have installed? If it's Snow Leopard do this:
    Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    Do the following:
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
    Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
    If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
    Download and install the Combo Updater for the version you prefer from support.apple.com/downloads/.

  • Possible to start a rac database from another standard oracle kernel ?

    With oracle RAC 10g R2 :
    If all nodes of a ORACLE RAC platform go down, is it possible to restart the database (with existing datafiles) from another oracle standard kernel 10g R2 ?
    Thanks for help : )

    That is an interesting question.. it should be possible.. you will definitely need a copy of your init.ora file. As long as the database files (control files, archive logs and redo logs) are on shared storage you should be able to start the database. Off course you will not have all the clustering features. I think it would be safe to disable the cluster database mode by setting the parameter CLUSTER_DATABASE = 'FALSE'.
    hmmmm... what if you are using ASM? It could be bit more tricky in this case. Depending on the O/S and other ASM components for example ASMLib used. I think it should be possible.. never tried one though.
    You may need to turn off the CLUSTER_DATABASE parameter on ASM as well.
    You will need to create an ASM instance! and get the diskgroups mounted manually. if you plan to try.. do post your findings for the benefit of other readers..

  • Can't we start a RAC instance without local pfile ?

    DB version : 11.1.0.7.0
    OS : Solaris 10 SPARC
    --Info about the cluster
    2 Node RAC
    Both instances using spfile stored in ASM Diskgroup
    Passwordless SSH configuration is not working currently (i gather ssh is not mandatory after installation)
    We have 7 RAC DBs running in our 11.1 CRS.
    After a reboot of our 2 Node RAC servers, in Node2, 4 instances didn't come up.
    None of these down instances have a local pfile. The ones that are up in Node2 have it.
    So, When i manually tried to bring up the ones that are down
    $ sqlplus / as sysdba
    SQL*Plus: Release 11.1.0.7.0 - Production on Fri Mar 2 21:28:22 2012
    Copyright (c) 1982, 2008, Oracle.  All rights reserved.
    Connected to an idle instance.
    SQL> startup

    LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/u01/app/oracle/product/11.1/db_1/dbs/initorcl2.ora'
    SQL> exit
    Disconnected-- Tried directly with spfile (No such option in oracle, but still tried ! )
    SQL> startup spfile='+ORCL_DATA01/ORCL/spfileorcl.ora'
    SP2-0714: invalid combination of STARTUP options-- Tried from Node1
    -- This might have failed because ssh is not working currently. Not sure
    $ srvctl start instance -d orcl -i orcl2
    PRKP-1001 : Error starting instance orcl2 on node manhclust199
    CRS-0215: Could not start resource 'ora.orcl.orcl2.inst'.
    $ srvctl start database -d orcl
    PRKP-1001 : Error starting instance orcl2 on node manhclust199
    CRS-0215: Could not start resource 'ora.orcl.orcl2.inst'.Finally I had to create a local pfile on node2 for each instances in OH/dbs
    The content of each local pfile is like
    $ cat initorcl2.ora
    spfile='+ORCL_DATA01/orcl/spfileorcl.ora'Now the startup worked without any issue for all 4 instances
    SQL> startup
    ORACLE instance started.
    Total System Global Area 2137886720 bytes
    Fixed Size                  2155464 bytes
    Variable Size            1593838648 bytes
    Database Buffers          536870912 bytes
    Redo Buffers                5021696 bytes
    Database mounted.
    Database opened.So, local pfile is mandatory for all RAC instances ?

    Hi,
    My question is whether this instance specific local pfile must be there in OH/dbs directory ?YES
    Didn't get a clear answer yet.
    It seems that it is mandatory. And this is most probably the reason these instances didn't come up after the reboot of this node.Startup Sequence:
    Startup of Cluster:
    Using "srvctl" to start your database/instance:
    Srvctl read the OCR and check the parameter SPFILE from your database registration:
    If parameter SPFILE in OCR have a value the srvctl will use this value to start your database instance.
    If parameter SPFILE in OCR don't have a value (i.e null) Oracle will try find the file SPFILE<ORACLE_SID>.ora on $ORACLE_HOME/dbs
    If the file SPFILE<ORACLE_SID>.ora does not exists, Oracle will try use the file init<ORACLE_SID>.ora
    If init<ORACLE_SID>.ora does not exist... the startup will fail.
    From ORACLE_HOME of your database execute command above to get value of Spfile parameter on OCR:
    srvctl config database -d <DB_NAME> |grep SpfileStartup manually from SHELL using SQLPLUS:
    Using SQLPLUS to start a database Oracle always first use SPFILE<ORACLE_SID>.ora stored on $ORACLE_HOME/dbs/ if this file does not exist he will try use INIT<ORACLE_SID>.ora to start Database Instance.
    If your spfile is stored on ASM you must create a INITFILE pointing to SPFILE stored on ASM.
    e.g From instance 1
    cat /oracle/oracle/product/11.2.0/db_1/dbs/initorcl1.ora
    SPFILE='+DATA/ORCL/spfileorcl.ora'Regards,

  • Who has started the RAC db

    Hi,
    I just have installed a RAC database (Oracle 11g) with two OEL servers using NFS. After the installation, I didn't configure the dbstart.
    Reboot the machines. The RAC database is also started !!! Who did it? OCR?

    All the database and instance information (including Listeners, ASM) are stored in the OCR. These are started as part by CRS as an application resource.
    You can also manuallys start them using crs_start or SRVCTL utility and stop them using CRS_STOP or SRVCTL utility.
    Hope this answers your question

  • Not able to start one rac database

    We had a 4 node RAC(11.2) environment in RH Linux.
    it was running fine. By mistake we change the owner of the mount point where oracle clusterware and database installed on first node.
    chown -R oracle:oinstall /u01
    chmod -R 775 /u01
    Due to this all services went down.
    Later we change the owner, as it is on node2 and restart the services and server.
    Now all the services are working fine. But oracle database is not coming up.
    It is not able to read the spfile from ASM.
    It is giving the error:

    Please suggest, as i Think it is permissions issues. some file have permissions as rwsr-s--x in other nodes.

    Hi;
    You have related permisson on your path? You have permisson error.
    By the way i suggest move your thread to Forum Home » Grid Computing » Real Application Clusters which you could get more quick response

  • Problem in start RAC

    We have Oracle 11.2 on Redhat Linux 5.2. It is a 3 node RAC. I want to restart a instance. I did it as in single instance: as sysdba, shutdown immediate and then startup
    SQL> startup
    ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter REMOTE_LISTENER
    ORA-00132: syntax error or unresolved network name 'cchORdb-rac:1521'Ther is a parameter
    *.remote_listener='cchORdb-rac:1521'
    I commited out the parameter and getORA-29760: instance_number parameter not specifiedI then triied to use srvctlsrvctl start database -d cchprd
    PRCR-1079 : Failed to start resource ora.cchprd.db
    ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter %s
    CRS-2674: Start of 'ora.cchprd.db' on 'cchordb2' failed

    ORA-00119: invalid specification for system parameter %s
    CRS-2674: Start of 'ora.cchprd.db' on 'cchordb3' failedPlease help.

    Hello,
    As per the error i feel that values gives for "REMOTE_LISTENER" is wrong. check for the values.
    usually it will be like below.
    NAME TYPE VALUE
    remote_listener string (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HO
    ST = HOST_NAME)(PORT = 1521))
    If there is any mistake edit your pfile as this and start your RAC database. it should start.

  • Where are Oracle files in RAC on Linux

    I took over a 2 nodes 11g RAC on Linux recently. The company hired a contract installed RAC late 2008 and did not left any document. Thus I do not know ORACLE_SID, ORACLE_HOME. I looked into oratab, it exists but is empty. oraenv exist but not help. I tried to start the RAC but could not find find Oracle binaries. I tried to look at listener configuration, but could not find listener.ora file. There are directories like /u02/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1, but it is empty.
    I did some thorough search using cmmands like below but find nothing useful.
    find / |grep listener
    find / |grep .ora
    ls -Rl |grep <admin, init ...>
    These files should be on the shared disk. Would shared diskmount under / in Linux? whould above commands apply to shared drive? Why I cannot find Oracle installed files.
    Appreciate any opineans and sugegstion

    about /etc/oratab file. if you have create database by "dbca" you should find something.
    By the way check about oracle processes on your sever.
    $ ps -ef |grep oracle | grep smonYou should find processes about Oracle Instance.
    Or check init*ora files at /u02/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/
    $ ls /u02/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/*
    *** PLease make you you have one ORACLE_HOME, not 2 ORACLE_HOME(for ASM and RDBMS)
    about ORACLE_SID
    example:
    $ ps -ef |grep oracle | grep smon
    oracle 27935 1 0 Jan13 ? 00:00:43 asm_smon_+ASM1
    oracle 16161 1 0 Jun04 ? 00:23:02 ora_smon_DB1that mean... ORACLE_SID=DB1 for rdbms and use asm
    OK... It' time to learn about your RAC and may help you about ORACLE Database
    Example:
    - find about CRS_HOME find crsctl in path bin
    $ find /u02 -name crsctl -type f
    /u02/app/oracle/crs/bin/crsctl
    I assume: CRS_HOME = /u02/app/oracle/crs
    OR find (root user)
    # grep ORA_CRS_HOME\= /etc/init.d/init.crsd
    ORA_CRS_HOME=/u02/app/oracle/crsAfter that check Cluster running ???
    # /u02/app/oracle/crs/bin/crsctl check crs
    CSS appears healthy
    CRS appears healthy
    EVM appears healthyIf not start it (root)
    #/u02/app/oracle/crs/bin/crsctl start crsAfter that check about resources're register in CRS
    $ /u02/app/oracle/crs/bin/crs_stat
    $ /u02/app/oracle/crs/bin/crs_stat -tOr get information every resources:
    $ export PATH=$PATH:/u02/app/oracle/crs/bin
